The main subject of this article is to comment on the issue of storminess trends derived from the twentieth century reanalysis (20CR) and from observations in the North Atlantic region written about in Wang et al. (Clim Dyn 40(11–12):2775–2800, 2012). The statement that the 20CR estimates would be consistent with storminess derived from pressure-based proxies does not hold for the time prior to 1950.  相似文献

Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) provides means to remove natural organic matter (NOM) from surface waters. Recent studies have explored the degree of NOM removal in groundwater. In this study, we further elaborate the NOM removal at a lakeside natural bank infiltration site that functions as a surrogate for MAR. Our objective was to quantify the carbon budget in the aquifer based on concentration measurements of dissolved (in)organic carbon, and the molecular changes in NOM using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). According to the carbon budget, only 25% of the dissolved carbon entering the aquifer was organic, and it predominantly originated from lake water. Of the inorganic majority, on average 40% was produced in the vadose zone above the groundwater table, 31% in the lake bank, 22% in the aquifer as a result of degrading organic matter of lake water, and 7% in the lake. Seasonal concentration variations suggested that the lake bank was the main carbon source in the summer, increasing the carbon concentration of infiltrating lake water, that is, 3.0 mg/L to 7.9 mg/L. FT-ICR MS results showed 4960 to 5330 individual compounds in lake and groundwater. NOM removal in the aquifer was selective: the relative abundance of oxygen-containing species decreased from 75 to 31%, while the relative abundance of sulfur-containing species increased from 15 to 57%. The average molecular weights of both species remained unchanged. The study highlighted the role of lake bank processes and sulfur-containing species in groundwater quality.  相似文献

The behaviour of trace amounts of arsenate coprecipitated with ferrihydrite, lepidocrocite and goethite was studied during reductive dissolution and phase transformation of the iron oxides using [55Fe]- and [73As]-labelled iron oxides. The As/Fe molar ratio ranged from 0 to 0.005 for ferrihydrite and lepidocrocite and from 0 to 0.001 for goethite. For ferrihydrite and lepidocrocite, all the arsenate remained associated with the surface, whereas for goethite only 30% of the arsenate was desorbable. The rate of reductive dissolution in 10 mM ascorbic acid was unaffected by the presence of arsenate for any of the iron oxides and the arsenate was not reduced to arsenite by ascorbic acid. During reductive dissolution of the iron oxides, arsenate was released incongruently with Fe2+ for all the iron oxides. For ferrihydrite and goethite, the arsenate remained adsorbed to the surface and was not released until the surface area became too small to adsorb all the arsenate. In contrast, arsenate preferentially desorbs from the surface of lepidocrocite. During Fe2+ catalysed transformation of ferrihydrite and lepidocrocite, arsenate became bound more strongly to the product phases. X-ray diffractograms showed that ferrihydrite was transformed into lepidocrocite, goethite and magnetite whereas lepidocrocite either remained untransformed or was transformed into magnetite. The rate of recrystallization of ferrihydrite was not affected by the presence of arsenate. The results presented here imply that during reductive dissolution of iron oxides in natural sediments there will be no simple correlation between the release of arsenate and Fe2+. Recrystallization of the more reactive iron oxides into more crystalline phases, induced by the appearance of Fe2+ in anoxic aquifers, may be an important trapping mechanism for arsenic.  相似文献

Subsidence analyses from the Betic Cordillera, southeast Spain   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Fifty‐four Mesozoic–Cenozoic stratigraphic sections from the Betic Cordillera of southeast Spain have been analysed in order to estimate the timing and amount of lithospheric stretching that occurred at the western end of the Tethyan Ocean since the Hercynian Orogeny. The standard backstripping technique has been used in order to calculate the water‐loaded subsidence of basement for each section. Water‐loaded subsidence curves were then inverted in order to determine the variation of lithospheric strain rate as a function of time, which yields estimates of timing, magnitude and intensity of stretching. Rifting commenced during the Late Permian/Early Triassic times and continued intermittently throughout the Mesozoic in response to the opening of the Tethyan Ocean to the east and the opening of the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Two major events in the Permo‐Triassic/Early Jurassic and the Late Jurassic/Early Cretaceous can be clearly identified. Stretching factors are generally small (1.1–1.25) probably because the Betic Cordillera was located at the westernmost end of the Tethys. Peak strain rates of ~10?15 s?1 were obtained for Mesozoic rift events and these values are in broad agreement with those obtained throughout the Tethyan Realm. We have also analysed the Neogene extensional event, which played an important role in forming the existing Mediterranean Sea. A combination of well‐log information and calibrated seismic reflection data was modelled. Peak strain rates in these younger basins are almost one order of magnitude faster than those estimated for the Mesozoic basins. These higher values appear to be typical of back‐arc extensional basins elsewhere. To the west and north of the Betic Cordillera, the Guadalquivir foreland basin developed as extension took place further east. Backstripped sections from this basin clearly record the northward migration of foreland basin subsidence through time.  相似文献

We have studied the effect of light acclimation on photosynthetic responses and growth during Cu2+ exposure (0–0.84 μM) in the brown seaweed Fucus serratus. Measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters showed that Cu2+ exposure amplified ETR, reduced the chlorophyll content at the cellular level and that there was no effect of light adaptation on the Cu2+ resistance of the algae. In contrast to the inhibitory effects of Cu2+ on chlorophyll fluorescence, O2 evolution and the total content of chlorophyll and carotenoid of the algae was unaffected by Cu2+. We conclude that photoinhibition and perhaps pigment degradation in the meristoderm was compensated for by cells deeper in the thallus with the result that the overall photosynthetic fitness of the algae was maintained. The pronounced inhibitory effects of Cu2+ on algae growth was not a consequence of photoinhibition and could be attributed to direct inhibitory effects on the growth process.  相似文献
