During June and July 2003 the Sources and Origins of Atmospheric Cloud Droplets experiment (SOACED) was carried out on a mountain-top site in central Sweden. The main objective of the experiment was to characterise the microphysical and chemical properties of cloud droplet residuals and interstitial aerosol particles in continental clouds and to understand the processes controlling cloud properties at this location.Interstitial and residual aerosol size distributions, cloud liquid water content and species- and size-resolved aerosol mass concentrations are the main variables employed to address questions pertaining to the cloud droplet number concentration and scavenging efficiency during a stratocumulus cloud event observed on July 28, 2003. In this cloud event, about 56% of the aerosol mass was associated with organic species, whilst SO4 accounted for 23% and NH4 for 14%. NO3 and Cl made up about 7% of the total mass.The partitioning of the aerosol particles between cloud droplets and interstitial air has been studied in terms of their microphysical properties. The scavenging efficiency, defined as the fraction of particles activated into cloud elements compared to the total amount of particles, was investigated as a function of size. The scavenging efficiency curves displayed different shapes during the cloud event, from an S-shaped curve, with low scavenging efficiency in the Aitken mode and larger scavenging efficiency in the accumulation mode, to more unusual shapes where Aitken-mode particles were either solely activated or activated in addition to accumulation-mode particles.This study suggests that alterations of the aerosol chemical composition occurred during the measurement period, changing the hygroscopic nature of the CCN and decreasing their activation diameter. It is also hypothesized that entrainment of drier air aloft may have introduced inhomogeneities in the supersaturation field and modified the S-shaped scavenging curves.  相似文献

For the establishment of the EC Water Framework Directive in Germany the physico‐chemical reference conditions of surface waters in Germany had to be determined. The results of the statistical analysis of 3500 data sets of 31 surface water catchment types show that water body types can be aggregated to bogs and bog riverside meadows, saliniferous type, carbonatic‐dolomitic type, sandy‐clayey type, silicatic type, and metallogenic type. The data base allows an assessment of the plausibility of the surface water quality classification and quality targets of the LAWA (Länderarbeitsgemeinschaft Wasser). The investigated reference status of the natural surface waters for the considered elements in the suspended particulate matter, except in metallogenic landscapes, corresponds to the water quality class I of the LAWA. The reference conditions of cadmium and mercury in the total water phase are significantly higher than the quality targets of the LAWA. The evaluated reference data of the other physico‐chemical parameters in the total water phase show, that assessable physico‐chemical parameters refer to a quality class of I, mainly and quality class II, locally. Mainly, the data reached the quality targets of the LAWA. In spite of the hard evaluation criteria to separate reference sites a special enrichment of nitrate and cadmium was found in many German surface water reference catchment types.  相似文献

We have determined the major and trace element compositions of 176 individual microtektites/spherules from the Australasian, Ivory Coast, and North American microtektite and clinopyroxene-bearing (cpx) spherule layers. Trace element contents for up to 30 trace elements were determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), and major element compositions were determined using energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis in combination with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). In addition, petrographic data were obtained for the cpx spherules using the SEM and EDX. This is the first trace element study of individual Australasian microtektites, and the data revealed the presence of a previously unrecognized group of Australasian microtektites with high contents of Ni (up to 471 ppm). In previous studies the high-Mg (HMg) Australasian microtektites were thought to be related to the HMg Australasian tektites, but our trace element data suggest that the high-Ni (HNi) Australasian microtektites, rather than the high-Mg microtektites, are related to the high-Mg Australasian tektites. We find that Cenozoic microtektites/spherules from a given layer can be distinguished from microtektites/spherules from other layers as a group, but it is not always possible to determine which layer an individual microtektite/spherule came from based only on trace element compositions. The cpx spherules and most of the microtektites have Cr, Co, and Ni contents that are higher than the average contents of these elements in the upper continental crust, suggesting the presence of a meteoritic component. The highest Cr, Co, and Ni contents are found in the cpx spherules (and low-Si cpx-related microtektites). Unetched to slightly etched cpx spherules have Ni/Cr and Ni/Co ratios that generally lie along mixing curves between the average upper continental crust and chondrites. The best fit appears to be with an LL chondrite. The moderately to heavily etched cpx spherules have values that lie off the mixing curves in a direction that suggests Ni loss, probably as a result of solution of a Ni-rich phase (olivine?). The Ni-rich Australasian microtektites also have Ni values that lie close to mixing curves between the average upper continental crust and chondrites. However, both the cpx spherules and HNi Australasian microtektites appear to have Ir (and to a lesser extent Au) contents that are much too low to have Ni/Ir ratios similar to chondritic values. We have no explanation for the low-Ir and -Au contents except to speculate that they may be the result of a complex fractionation process. The Ivory Coast and North American microtektites do not have high enough siderophile element contents to reach any firm conclusions regarding the presence of, or nature of, a meteoritic component in them. Trace element compositions are consistent with derivation of the Cenozoic microtektite/spherule layers from upper continental crust. The normal Australasian microtektites appear to have been derived from a graywacke or lithic arenite with a range in clay and quartz content. The source rock for the high-Mg Australasian microtektites is not known, but the HMg microtektites do not appear to be normal Australasian microtektites that were simply contaminated by meteorites or ultramafic rocks. The average Ivory Coast microtektite composition can be matched with a mixture of target rocks at the Bosumtwi crater. The average composition of the North American microtektites suggests an arkosic source rock, but with graywacke and quartz-rich end members. However, we could not match the composition of the North American microtektites with lithologies in impact breccias recovered from the Chesapeake Bay impact structure that is believed to be the source crater. Likewise, we could not match the composition of the cpx spherules with mixtures of basement rocks and overlying sedimentary deposits (for which compositional data are available) at the Popigai impact crater that may be the source crater for the cpx spherules. This may be because the cpx spherules were derived, in large part, from clastic surface rocks (sandstones and shales) for which no compositional data are available.  相似文献

The effect of intensive grazing and browsing of domestic stock and wildlife on the number of species and abundance of vegetation was investigated in the Hoanib River catchment, north-western Namibia. The seasonal abundance of ground cover, bare earth, canopy cover, annual grass, perennial grass and annual forbs were measured in each of the focus-study areas. In three of the focus areas where the ranges of both domestic stock and wildlife were restricted either by fencing or water availability, impact on the vegetation was greatest. The final focus area was a more ‘open range’ system that allowed for the free movement of wildlife. Under these conditions the species abundance and availability of browsing and grazing was greater than the other focus areas during both the wet and dry seasons. However, very little difference in abundance and availability of vegetation was observed between focus areas in both seasons regardless of landuse. There is generally a low abundance of perennial grasses and browse species affording the ecosystem little resistance and resilience to disturbance caused by grazing and drought.  相似文献

We consider star models consisting of spin 0 particles interacting only gravitationally, e.g. Higgs-particles as possible dark matter objects. The particle gas of finite temperature is treated according to the Bose-Einstein-statistics in its non- relativistic limit; then the use of Newtonian gravity is sufficient too. The limits of these restrictions are estimated. The local temperature is determined with the use of energy conservation. The mass-radius relation of the objects and their further behaviours as Bose-Einstein-condensation in the outer regions are calculated. We find strong similarities with the features of white dwarfs and neutron stars. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
