Interactions between physical and biological processes in intertidal sediments have been the focus of studies in the framework of the ECOFLAT project. Process studies were focused on the Molenplaat, a 1.5 km2 intertidal flat in the Westerschelde estuary, The Netherlands. Distinct spatial patterns in the biological community on the flat were found and related to patterns in bottom shear stress as derived from a hydrodynamic model. Based on these survey results five stations were selected with contrasting sediment composition and benthic communities.Long-term net sedimentation of mainly sand was deduced from radionuclide profiles. Sedimentation of mud on the surface of part of the intertidal flat was shown to be a seasonally cyclic process, with a magnitude sufficient to significantly affect the mud balance of the estuary. Measurements of erodability as a function of tidal current showed a biological control on this variable. Benthic microalgae stabilise the sediment surface, whereas the benthic macrofauna has a destabilising effect.Food web studies show that the contrasting biological communities (microbenthos, meiobenthos, macrobenthos) at muddy and sandy sites have substantial differences in the quantitative aspects of their food web. Turnover of microalgae is much lower at muddy than at sandy sites, and this is mostly related to a lower grazing pressure. It is hypothesised that high mud content decreases the availability of benthic microalgae to grazers.We demonstrate a positive feedback between benthic microalgae and mud sedimentation which may lead to the existence of different stable states. This may explain the existence of relatively sharp boundaries and strong community contrasts in the presence of weak and smooth environmental gradients. 相似文献

Solid bodies of upper-mantle peridotite, emplaced in the Betic-Rifchains of SW Spain and North Morocco, show a variety of structuresdeveloped under different metamorphic conditions. These structuresand related metamorphism reflect tectonic processes in the WestMediterranean mantle during orogeny in the Betic-Rif realm.The largest of the peridotites, the Ronda massif, has preservedthree structural domains which are spatially associated withmetamorphic domains previously defined by Obata (Journal ofPetrology, 21,533572, 1980). These structural domainsinclude: (1) porphyroclastic spinel peridotites (spinel tectonites)and mylonitic garnet-spinel peridotites (garnet-spinel mylonites),developed during progressive strain localization at ambientconditions changing from the Arigite subfacies to garnet peridotitefacies; (2) seemingly undeformed granular peridotites, developedduring a phase of extensive recrystallization affecting thespinel tectonites and garnet-spinel mylonites at Seiland subfaciesconditions, and separated from the spinel tectonites by a well-preservedrecrystallization front which forms a marked structural, metamorphicand possibly geochemical boundary probably unique to orogenicperidotites; (3) porphyroclastic plagioclase peridotites (plagioclasetectonites) developed at the expense of the granular peridotitesduring progressive shear localization allied to ductile emplacementof the Ronda massif into the crust. Our structural and microstructural data from the Ronda massifallow us to assess the relative ages of the different metamorphicfacies seen in the West Mediterranean peridotites. In orderof decreasing relative age, these are: Arigite-subfacies, garnetperidotite facies, Seiland subfacies and plagioclase peridotitefacies. In addition, the associated microstructures providesome insight into the microphysical conditions controlling thedevelopment of the different structures and, as a result, thestructural and chemical heterogeneity of the West Mediterraneanperidotites. A unique, five-year long data set of ferry-mounted ADCP measurements in the Marsdiep inlet, the Netherlands, obtained between 1998 and 2003, is presented. A least-squares harmonic analysis was applied to the water transport, (depth-averaged) currents, and water level to study the contribution of the tides. With 144 tidal constituents, maximally 98% of the variance in the water transport and streamwise currents is explained by the tides, whereas for the stream-normal currents this is maximally 50%. The most important constituent is the semi-diurnal M2 constituent, which is modulated by the second-largest S2 constituent (about 27% of M2). Compound and overtides, such as 2MS2, 2MN2, M4, and M6, are important in the inlet. Due to interaction of M2 with its quarter-diurnal overtide M4, the tidal asymmetry in the southern two thirds of the inlet is flood dominant. The amplitudes of all non-astronomic constituents are largest during spring tides, strongly distorting the water level and velocity curves. The M2 water transport is 40° ahead in phase compared to the M2 water level, reflecting the progressive character of the tidal wave in the inlet. The currents are strongly rectilinear and they are sheared vertically and horizontally, with the highest currents at the surface above the deepest part of the inlet. During spring tides, near-surface currents can be as large as 1.8 m s− 1. Due to the relative importance of inertia compared to friction, the M2 currents near the centre (surface) lag maximal 20° (3°) in phase with the currents near the sides (bottom). An examination of the effect of assumptions in the interpretation of the Venera wind data is made as a rebuttal to the suggestion by A.T. Young that the 140 m/sec Venera 8 horizontal wind at 45 km may be either spurious or anomalous. The Venera measurements of wind speed along with the Mariner measurements of a lower region of strong turbulence are evidence for a wide band of variable high-speed retrograde horizontal winds which girdle Venus at the equator. In the prevalent interpretation of the Mariner 10 uv photographs, the region of the top of the visible cloud is characterized by variable high-speed retrograde horizontal winds which orbit Venus with an average period of 4 Earth days, and by many features indicating vertical convection. This interpretation, together with the possibility of atmospheric corotation due to frictional coupling, suggests that the Venera-Mariner band of winds at 45 km extends well beyond the top of the visible cloud, and that the upper region of strong turbulence detected by the Mariners may result in part from vertical convection currents carried along by high-speed horizontal winds. In an alternate interpretation of the Mariner 10 uv photographs Young suggests that the predominant motions may be traveling wavelike disturbances with a 4-day period rather than bulk motion of the atmosphere. For this case the upper region of strong turbulence is interpreted as due mostly to vertical wind shear resulting from a rapid decrease in wind speed within a relatively short distance above the Venera-Mariner band of high-speed winds. 相似文献

A combined study of radar profiles and thin section analysis supported by modelling of synthetic radar traces reveals that ground-penetrating radar (GPR) reflections generated in diagenetically altered sandstones cannot always be interpreted unequivocally. This is illustrated in the Luxembourg Sandstone Formation, which has been altered diagenetically by selective carbonate cementation and fracturing. Cemented lenses and concretions developed along the bedding planes, especially at places with high primary carbonate content. Cementation resulted in the alternation of cemented carbonate-rich sandy layers (thickness 30–50 cm and variable length) and uncemented carbonate-poor sandstone layers. The ability of GPR to detect the geometry of these lenses and vertical fractures with centimetre apertures has been tested at several antenna frequencies (100, 200, 250 and 500 MHz). Relative dielectric permittivity calculations were carried out to assess variations of this electric property within the cemented and uncemented layers as a function of porosity, calcite and water content in the pores. Two-dimensional full waveform modelling was also carried out to study the effect of conductivity in the sandstones and the effect of interlayer clay seams. At the penetration depth of the radar (7 m with 250 MHz), cemented lenses and concretions could only be detected with GPR when the porosity contrast was sufficiently high, which is not always the case. This conclusion is supported by the modelling. The data also proved the ability of radar to detect large open vertical fractures along which sandstones are weathered. The study has implications for investigations which will use GPR to detect three-dimensional distribution of diagenetic pore filling precipitates as well as secondary porosity development along fractures. 相似文献
