A new method for automated detection of polar coronal holes is presented. This method, called perimeter tracing, uses a series of 171, 195, and 304 Å full disk images from the Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) on SOHO over solar cycle 23 to measure the perimeter of polar coronal holes as they appear on the limbs. Perimeter tracing minimizes line-of-sight obscurations caused by the emitting plasma of the various wavelengths by taking measurements at the solar limb. Perimeter tracing also allows for the polar rotation period to emerge organically from the data as 33 days. We have called this the Harvey rotation rate and count Harvey rotations starting 4 January 1900. From the measured perimeter, we are then able to fit a curve to the data and derive an area within the line of best fit. We observe the area of the northern polar hole area in 1996, at the beginning of solar cycle 23, to be about 4.2% of the total solar surface area and about 3.6% in 2007. The area of the southern polar hole is observed to be about 4.0% in 1996 and about 3.4% in 2007. Thus, both the north and south polar hole areas are no more than 15% smaller now than they were at the beginning of cycle 23. This compares to the polar magnetic field measured to be about 40% less now than it was a cycle ago.  相似文献

The Io flux tube (IFT), along which Io interacts with the Jovian magnetosphere, is the place of plasma acceleration processes resulting in auroral like emissions, in UV, IR and Radio emissions in the decameter range. At Earth, the study of the acceleration processes is mainly made by in situ measurements. Acceleration processes at Jupiter were first deduced from the observation of a particular kind of decameter radio emissions from the IFT: the short (S-)bursts. These radio bursts present a negative drift in the time-frequency domain, which is related to the motion of the energetic electrons which produce them. The measure of their drift thus permits the kinetic energy of the electrons to be obtained, as well as its variations along the IFT which have been interpreted as electric potential jumps. Using an enhanced S-burst detection and drift measurement method, more than 1 h of quasi-continuous decametric emissions recorded at the Kharkov UTR-2 radiotelescope have been analyzed. We observe the evolution of the electron kinetic energy with the longitude of Io with a resolution of , and detect the presence of acceleration structures with characteristics being consistent with electric potential jumps of few hundred volts, and moving along the IFT in the upward direction (toward Io) at the local sound velocity.  相似文献

Calculations are performed of the vertical distribution of water vapor and condensate in an adiabatic atmosphere on Mars taking into account turbulent diffusion and terminal velocity. The distributions are found to be substantially different when terminal velocity is included. The eddy-diffusion coefficient in the troposphere cannot be much greater than 105 cm2sec?1 if optical depths are to be kept low enough to be consistent with observations. Processes in the boundary layer are also discussed. We conclude that virtually all the water vapor is to be found in the lowest 6–10 km and that the lowest 2km should have a greate r concentration than the rest of that layer. Some observational tests of these ideas and conclusion can be performed by the Viking missions to Mars.  相似文献

Crustal formation and evolution processes are of critical importance in the geochemical and thermal evolution of planets. As an aid to understanding these processes on Venus, we develop a general paradigm for: (1) the derivation of primary magmas, and (2) the range of possible conditions for remelting of crustal materials and the evolution of the products of remelting. We use as a basis for this paradigm the present knowledge of the bulk and surface composition, thermal structure, and surface geological and geochemical processes. For the range of conditions of derivation of primary magmas and crustal remelting, a wide range of magma types is possible, and no magma type can be arbitrarily excluded from consideration on Venus. We conclude that magmatic and volcanic activity on Venus, in its broadest sense, could be very similar to that on the Earth, although eruption styles are expected to vary due to environmental conditions (Head and Wilson, 1986). Major differences in magmatic and volcanic activity are likely to occur in two environments on Venus: (1) those analogous to terrestrial island arcs, where due to the absence of water, melts should be SiO2-undersaturated, and the more fluid melt products may produce widespread deposits of SiO2-poor ferrobasalts rather than more viscous SiO2-rich magmas and composite volcanoes, and (2) those in plains regions influenced by mantle plumes and hot spots, where highly picritic melts may periodically flood vast regions of the surface.'Geology and Tectonics of Venus', special issue edited by Alexander T. The effects of the addition of Al2O3 on the large stable two liquid field in the SiO2-TiO2-CaO-MgO-FeO system were experimentally determined. The increase of Al2O3 content in the starting composition results in the decrease of critical temperature, phase separation and liquidus temperature of the two liquid field until it is rendered completely metastable. The shrinkage of the two liquid field indicates that Al2O3 is acting in the role of a network former and homogenizes the structure of the two melts. In this alkali-free system Al+3 utilizes the divalent cations, Ca+2 and Mg+2, for local charge balance with a preference for Ca+2 over Mg+2. Thus, AlO4 tetrahedra combine with SiO4 tetrahedra to form an aluminosilicate framework which polymerizes the SiO2-poor melt and makes it structurally more similar to the SiO2-rich melt. However, Ca+2 and Mg+2 are not as efficient in a charge balancing capacity as the monovalent K+ and Na+ cations. The lack of alkalis in this system limits the stability of AlO4 tetrahedra in the highly polymerized SiO2-rich melt and results in the preference of Al2O3 for the SiO2-poor melt. The partitioning systematics of Ti are virtually identical to those of Al. It is concluded that Ti occurs in tetrahedral coordination as a network forming species in both the high — and low — SiO immiscible melts.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Die Kristallstruktur des Stranskiits wurde mit neuen Meßdaten, die an einer aus Tsumeb stammenden Probe gewonnen worden waren, bis zuR=0,034 für 1239 unabhängige beobachtete Reflexe verfeinert. Von der verfeinerten Struktur wurde die Ladungsbilanz aufgestellt und besonders im Hinblick auf die Ladungsdeformation des Cu2+ diskutiert. Eine Mikrosondenanalyse derselben Probe ergab, daß die tatsächliche Zusammensetzung der angegebenen Formel entspricht.
Charge balance of a refined crystal structure of stranskiite, Zn2Cu (AsO4)2
Summary The crystal structure of stranskiite was refined with new intensity data obtained from a specimen from Tsumeb toR=0.034 for 1234 observed independent reflections. The charge balance was calculated and discussed particularly with respect of the charge deformation of Cu2+. An electron probe microanalysis gave the result that the actual composition of the specimen corresponds to the given formula.

Cave sediments from Stump Cross Cave in northern England contain Pleistocene mammal remains. Uranium-series dating of calcium carbonate deposits closely associated with the fossiliferous horizons has established an absolute age of 83,000 ± 6000 yr B.P. for a faunal assemblage largely comprised of wolverines (Gulo gulo). This date lies firmly within the younger portion of oxygen-isotope stage 5. The occurrence of wolverines in the vicinity of Stump Cross Cave at ca. 83,000 yr B.P. indicates a significant climatic deterioration from ca. 120,000 yr B.P., when an Ipswichian interglacial fauna with hippopotamus was present in this part of northern England.  相似文献
