Riverine freshwater plumes are the major transport mechanism for nutrients, sediments and pollutants into the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) lagoon and connect the land with the receiving coastal and marine waters. Knowledge of the variability of the freshwater extent into the GBR lagoon is relevant for marine park management to develop strategies for improving ecosystem health and risk assessments. In this study, freshwater extent has been estimated for the entire GBR lagoon area from daily satellite observations of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) between 2002 and 2010. To enable a reliable mapping of freshwater plumes we applied a physics-based coastal ocean colour algorithm, that simultaneously retrieves chlorophyll-a, non-algal particulate matter and coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM), from which we used CDOM as a surrogate for salinity (S) for mapping the freshwater extent. 相似文献

A method of geochronology based on the chemical racemization of amino acids has been developed within the last few years. The various amino acids that make up the proteins of all living organisms consist virtually entirely of thel-enantiomer. After death, thel-enantiomer for each amino acid is slowly racemized over geological time and eventually forms an equilibrium mixture consisting of equal amounts of thed- andl-enantiometer. The increase in D/L ratio can be used to obtain a measure of the time that has elapsed since the organism died. The range of applicability of this method is the Pleistocene and may eventually be useful throughout the Pliocene in some cases. This paper presents a review of the literature on these applications as well as several suggested areas for future research.Unlike radionuclide decay rates, chemical reaction rates are sensitive to changes in such common environmental parameters as temperature, pH, solvent-medium, etc. For this reason, kinetic studies have been conducted at elevated temperatures in various “fossil-types” in order to simulate the changes that occur over long periods of time at the low temperatures found on the surface of the earth. Such studies, while of somewhat limited value for precise extrapolation, do nevertheless provide valuable information on which to base the theoretical concepts necessary for a complete understanding of the geochemical implications of the racemization reaction.Skeletal remains form the most suitable fossils for chronological study. Proteinaceous material is found embedded within the carbonate exoskeletons of invertebrates and the phosphatic endoskeletons of vertebrates. Most of the geochemical racemization studies have been conducted on foraminiferal shells and on bones. However, some work has also been reported on shells of other invertebrates, marine and lacustrine clays, and a few abiogenic concretions.Since the racemization reaction is temperature dependent, it has been used as a paleothermometer to estimate the average temperature to which bones and shells of independently known age have been exposed since their deposition. These average temperatures as a function of time have then been converted into estimates of the magnitude of the Holocene postglacial/Wisconsin glacial temperature change on land. They have also been used to obtain estimates of the “time-averaged” thermal gradient in deep-sea sediments using foraminifera isolated from the sediments. 相似文献

Since the mid-1990s, the aim of keeping climate change within 2?°C has become firmly entrenched in policy discourses. In the past few years, the likelihood of achieving it has been increasingly called into question. The debate around what to do with a target that seems less and less achievable is, however, only just beginning. As the UN commences a two-year review of the 2?°C target, this article moves beyond the somewhat binary debates about whether or not it should or will be met, in order to analyse more fully some of the alternative options that have been identified but not fully explored in the existing literature. For the first time, uncertainties, risks, and opportunities associated with four such options are identified and synthesized from the literature. The analysis finds that the significant risks and uncertainties associated with some options may encourage decision makers to recommit to the 2?°C target as the least unattractive course of action. 相似文献

Krill (crustaceans of the family Euphausiacea) comprise an important prey field for vast array of fish, birds, and marine mammals in the California Current and other large marine ecosystems globally. In this study, we test the hypothesis that mesoscale spatial organization of krill is related to oceanographic conditions associated with coastal upwelling. To test this, we compiled a climatology of krill distributions based on hydroacoustic surveys off California in May–June each year between 2000 and 2009 (missing 2007). Approximately 53,000 km of ocean habitat was sampled, resulting in a comprehensive geo-spatial data set from the Southern California Bight to Cape Mendocino. We determined the location and characteristics of eight definite and two probable krill “hotspots” of abundance. Directional-dependence analysis revealed that krill hotspots were oriented in a northwest–southeast (135°) direction, corresponding to the anisotropy of the 200–2000 m isobath. Krill hotspots were disassociated (inversely correlated) with three upwelling centers, Point Arena, Point Sur, and Point Conception, suggesting that krill may avoid locations of strong offshore transport or aggregate downstream from these locations. While current fisheries management considers the entire coast out to the 2000 m isobath critical habitat for krill in this ecosystem, we establish here smaller scale structuring of this critical mid-trophic level prey resource. Identifying mesoscale krill hotspots and their oceanographic determinants is significant as these smaller ecosystem divisions may warrant protection to ensure key ecosystem functions (i.e., trophic transfer) and resilience. Furthermore, delineating and quantifying krill hotspots may be important for conservation of krill-predators in this system. 相似文献

Photosystem II (PSII) herbicides are used in large quantities on agricultural lands adjoining the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Routine monitoring at 14 sites in inshore waters of the GBR using passive sampling techniques detected diuron (32-94% of sampling periods) at maximum concentrations of 1.7-430ng L(-1) in the relatively pristine Cape York Region to the Mackay Whitsunday Region, respectively. A PSII herbicide equivalent (PSII-HEq) index developed as an indicator for reporting was dominated by diuron (average contribution 89%) and typically increased during the wet season. The maximum PSII-HEq indicates the potential for photosynthetic inhibition of diatoms, seagrass and coral-symbionts. PSII herbicides were significantly positively correlated with remotely sensed coloured dissolved organic matter, a proxy for freshwater extent. Combining these methods provides for the first time the potential to cost-effectively monitor improvements in water quality entering the GBR with respect to exposure to PSII herbicides. 相似文献

Water and gas samples were collected from (1) nine shallow groundwater aquifers overlying Marcellus Shale in north‐central West Virginia before active shale gas drilling, (2) wells producing gas from Upper Devonian sands and Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale in southwestern Pennsylvania, (3) coal‐mine water discharges in southwestern Pennsylvania, and (4) streams in southwestern Pennsylvania and north‐central West Virginia. Our preliminary results demonstrate that the oxygen and hydrogen isotope composition of water, carbon isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon, and carbon and hydrogen isotope compositions of methane in Upper Devonian sands and Marcellus Shale are very different compared with shallow groundwater aquifers, coal‐mine waters, and stream waters of the region. Therefore, spatiotemporal stable isotope monitoring of the different sources of water before, during, and after hydraulic fracturing can be used to identify migrations of fluids and gas from deep formations that are coincident with shale gas drilling. 相似文献

Measurements of formaldehyde (HCHO) were made at the Cape Verde Atmospheric Observatory between November 2006 and June 2007 using the Long-Path Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (LP-DOAS) technique. Observations show that typical HCHO mixing ratios ranged between 350 and 550 pptv (with typical 2-σ uncertainties of ~110 pptv), with several events of high HCHO, the maximum being 1,885?±?149 pptv. The observations indicate a lack of strong seasonal or diurnal variations, within the uncertainty of the measurements. A box model is employed to test whether the observations can be explained using known hydrocarbon photochemistry; the model replicates well the typical diurnal profile and monthly mean values. The model results indicate that on average 20% of HO2 production and 10% of OH destruction can be attributed to the mean HCHO levels, suggesting that even at these low average mixing ratios HCHO plays an important role in determining the HOx (HO2+OH) balance of the remote marine boundary layer. 相似文献
