In Part I (Storch and Xu 1990) the principal oscillation pattern (POP) analysis of 200 mb equatorial velocity potential leads to the definition of a bivariate (POP-) index of the tropical 30- to 60-day oscillation. Using the POP prediction scheme this index is predictable for a few days in advance. In Part 11, the prediction of the equatorial velocity potential field, made by the POP method and made by two GCMs, is investigated. The POP index forecast can incorporate skillful forecasts of the equatorial velocity potential () field. Its ensemble correlation skill score passes the 0.50 level at 7 days, whereas persistence passes after 3 days. If there is a strong 30- to 60-day oscillation signal in the initial state, useful forecasts of more than 20 days are sometimes possible; if the initial signal is weak, the POP forecast fails. Also, the forecast skill of two GCMs is considered. The NCAR T31 GCM appears to be quite skillful in predicting the equatorial -field, and in particular the 30- to 60-day oscillation. Its skill, however, is less than that of the POP scheme. The CNRM T42 GCM seems not to be able to predict the regular development associated with the tropical 30- to 60-day oscillation. The power of the POP index in explaining the equatorial x-field is a measure of the strength and dominance of the 30- to 60-day oscillation. This measure at day 0 is an a priori indicator of the NCAR T31 GCM's skill in predicting the equatorial velocity potential field.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation  相似文献

Summary. ?Ca-tourmaline has been synthesized hydrothermally in the presence of Ca(OH)2 and CaCl2-bearing solutions of different concentration at T = 300–700 °C at a constant fluid pressure of 200 MPa in the system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-B2O3-H2O-HCl. Synthesis of tourmaline was possible at 400 °C, but only above 500 °C considerable amounts of tourmaline formed. Electron microprobe analysis and X-ray powder data indicate that the synthetic tourmalines are essentially solid solutions between oxy-uvite, CaMg3- Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3O, and oxy-Mg-foitite, □(MgAl2)Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3O. The amount of Ca ranges from 0.36 to 0.88 Ca pfu and increases with synthesis temperature as well as with bulk Ca-concentration in the starting mixture. No hydroxy-uvite, CaMg3(MgAl5)(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH), could be synthesized. All tourmalines have < 3 Mg and > 6 Al pfu. The Al/(Al + Mg)-ratio decreases from 0.80 to 0.70 with increasing Ca content. Al is coupled with Mg and Ca via the substitutions Al2□Mg−2Ca−1 and AlMg−1H−1. No single phase tourmaline could be synthesized. Anorthite ( + quartz in most runs) has been found coexisting with tourmaline. Other phases are chlorite, tremolite, enstatite or cordierite. Between solid and fluid, Ca is strongly fractionated into tourmaline ( + anorthite). The concentration ratio D = Ca(fluid)/Ca(tur) increases from 0.20 at 500 °C up to 0.31 at 700 °C. For the assemblage turmaline + anorthite + quartz + chlorite or tremolite or cordierite, the relationship between Ca content in tourmaline and in fluid with temperature can be described by the equation (whereby T = temperature in °C, Ca(tur) = amount of Ca on the X-site in tourmaline, Ca( fluid) = concentration of Ca2+ in the fluid in mol/l). The investigations may serve as a first guideline to evaluate the possibility to use tourmaline as an indicator for the fluid composition.
Zusammenfassung. ?Synthese von Ca-Turmelin im System CaO-MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -B 2 O 3 -H 2 O-HCl Im System CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-B2O3-H2O-HCl wurde Ca-Turmalin hydrothermal aus Ca(OH)2 and CaCl2-haltigen L?sungen bei T = 300–700 °C und einem konstanten Fluiddruck von 200 MPa synthetisiert. Die Synthese von Turmalin war m?glich ab 400 °C, aber nur oberhalb von 500 °C bildeten sich deutliche Mengen an Turmalin. Elektronenstrahl-Mikrosondenanalysen und R?ntgenpulveraufnahmen zeigen, da? Mischkristalle der Reihe Oxy-Uvit, CaMg3Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3O, und Oxy-Mg-Foitit, □(MgAl2)Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3O gebildet wurden. Der Anteil an Ca variiert zwischen 0.36 und 0.88 Ca pfu und nimmt mit zunehmender Synthesetemperatur und zunehmender Ca-Konzentration im System zu. Hydroxy-Uvit, CaMg3(MgAl5) (Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH), konnte nicht synthetisiert werden. Alle Turmaline haben < 3 Mg und > 6 Al pfu. Dabei nimmt das Al/(Al + Mg)- Verh?ltnis mit zunehmendem Ca-Gehalt von 0.80 auf 0.70 ab. Al ist gekoppelt mit Mg und Ca über die Substitutionen Al2□Mg−2Ca−1 und AlMg−1H−1. Einphasiger Turmalin konnte nicht synthetisiert werden. Anorthit (+ Quarz in den meisten F?llen) koexistiert mit Turmalin. Andere Phasen sind Chlorit, Tremolit, Enstatit oder Cordierit. Ca zeigt eine deutliche Fraktionierung in den Festk?rpern Turmalin (+ Anorthit). Das Konzentrationsverh?ltnis D = Ca(fluid)/Ca(tur) nimmt von 0.20 bei 500 °C auf 0.31 bei 700 °C zu. Für die Paragenese Turmalin + Anorthit + Quarz mit Chlorit oder Tremolit oder Cordierit gilt folgende Beziehung zwischen Ca-Gehalt in Turmalin und Fluid und der Temperatur: (wobei T = Temperatur in °C, Ca(tur) = Anteil an Ca auf der X-Position in Turmalin, Ca(fluid) = Konzentration von Ca2+ im Fluid in mol/l). Die Untersuchungen dienen zur ersten Absch?tzung, ob Turmalin als Fluidindikator petrologisch nutzbar ist.

In orogens worldwide and throughout geologic time, large volumes of deep continental crust have been exhumed in domal structures. Extension-driven ascent of bodies of deep, hot crust is a very efficient mechanism for rapid heat and mass transfer from deep to shallow crustal levels and is therefore an important mechanism in the evolution of continents. The dominant rock type in exhumed domes is quartzofeldspathic gneiss (typically migmatitic) that does not record its former high-pressure (HP) conditions in its equilibrium mineral assemblage; rather, it records the conditions of emplacement and cooling in the mid/shallow crust. Mafic rocks included in gneiss may, however, contain a fragmentary record of a HP history, and are evidence that their host rocks were also deeply sourced. An excellent example of exhumed deep crust that retains a partial HP record is in the Montagne Noire dome, French Massif Central, which contains well-preserved eclogite (garnet+omphacite+rutile+quartz) in migmatite in two locations: one in the dome core and the other at the dome margin. Both eclogites record P ~ 1.5 ± 0.2 GPa at T  ~  700 ± 20°C, but differ from each other in whole-rock and mineral composition, deformation features (shape and crystallographic preferred orientation, CPO), extent of record of prograde metamorphism in garnet and zircon, and degree of preservation of inherited zircon. Rim ages of zircon in both eclogites overlap with the oldest crystallization ages of host gneiss at c. 310 Ma, interpreted based on zircon rare earth element abundance in eclogite zircon as the age of HP metamorphism. Dome-margin eclogite zircon retains a widespread record of protolith age (c. 470–450 Ma, the same as host gneiss protolith age), whereas dome-core eclogite zircon has more scarce preservation of inherited zircon. Possible explanations for differences in the two eclogites relate to differences in the protolith mafic magma composition and history and/or the duration of metamorphic heating and extent of interaction with aqueous fluid, affecting zircon crystallization. Differences in HP deformation fabrics may relate to the position of the eclogite facies rocks relative to zones of transpression and transtension at an early stage of dome development. Regardless of differences, both eclogites experienced HP metamorphism and deformation in the deep crust at c. 310 Ma and were exhumed by lithospheric extension—with their host migmatite—near the end of the Variscan orogeny. The deep crust in this region was rapidly exhumed from ~50 to <10 km, where it equilibrated under low-P/high-T conditions, leaving a sparse but compelling record of the deep origin of most of the crust now exposed in the dome.  相似文献

We present facsimiles of some of the scientifically and historically most relevant papers published in Astronomische Nachrichten/Astronomical Notes (AN) between 1821 and 1938. Almost all of these papers were written and printed in German and it is sometimes not completely straightforward to find these original works and then to cite the historically correct version, e.g. in case of a series of articles or editorial letters. It was common during the early years that many contributions were made in form of letters to the editor. We present a summary for these original works with an English translation of their titles. Among the highlights are the originals of the discovery of stellar parallaxes by FriedrichWilhelm Bessel, the discovery of the solar cycle by Heinrich Schwabe, the discovery of the planet Neptune by Johann Gottfried Galle, the first ever measured stellar radial velocity by Hermann Vogel, the discovery of radio emission from the Sun by Wilsing and Scheiner, the first ever conducted photoelectric photometry of stars by Paul Guthnick and up to the pioneering work by Karl Schwarzschild, Ejnar Hertzsprung, Erwin Finlay Freundlich and others. As a particular gimmick we present the still world record holding shortest paper ever published; by Johannes Hartmann in AN 226, 63 (1926) on Nova Pictoris. During the 2007 and 2008 solar minimum period, STEREO, Wind, and ACE observed numerous Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) over spatial separations that began with all the spacecraft close to Earth, through STEREO separation angles of ~?80 degrees in the fall of 2008. Over 35 CIR events were of sufficient intensity to allow measurement of He and heavy ion spectra using the IMPACT/SIT, EPACT/STEP and ACE/ULEIS instruments on STEREO, Wind, and ACE, respectively. In addition to differences between the spacecraft expected on the basis of simple corotation, we observed several events where there were markedly different time-intensity profiles from one spacecraft to the next. By comparing the energetic particle intensities and spectral shapes along with solar wind speed we examine the extent to which these differences are due to temporal evolution of the CIR or due to variations in connection to a relatively stable interaction region. Comparing CIRs in the 1996?–?1997 solar minimum period vs. 2007?–?2008, we find that the 2007?–?2008 period had many more CIRs, reflecting the presence of more high-speed solar wind streams, whereas 1997 had almost no CIR activity.

In the present study, the stable isotopes δ18O and δ2H were used for assessment of the water balance in a heterogeneously structured catchment area in the Lusatian Lignite Mining District, in particular, for estimation of the annual groundwater inflow and outflow (IGW and OGW) of Mining Lake Plessa 117. The application of stable isotopes was possible since the water exchange in the catchment area had reached steady‐state conditions after the abandonment of mining activities in 1968 and the filling of the voids and aquifers by re‐rising groundwater in the years thereafter. Diverging slopes of the Evaporation Line and the Global Meteoric Water Line manifested as evaporation from the lake catchment area. The calculated isotope water balance was compared with the commonly used surface water balance, which is unable to differentiate between IGW and OGW, and with a local groundwater model. The groundwater model calculated an IGW of about 811 000 m3 yr?1 and an OGW close to zero, whereas the isotope water balance showed fluxes of about 914 000 and 140 000 m3 yr?1, respectively. Considering the contribution of the groundwater inflow to the total annual input into the lake (ΔIT) and the mean residence time (τ), where the groundwater model and the isotope water balance calculated 42 and 47% for ΔIT and 4·3 and 3·9 years for τ, respectively, it was shown that both water balance calculation methods led to comparable results despite the differences in IGW and OGW. To elucidate the problem regarding the genesis of granites and migmatites, the influence of a) anorthite component, b) mafic components, and c) composition of the fluid phase on the crystallization of, granitic melts has been experimentally studied. As starting material, an obsidian with an average granitic composition has been selected and mixtures of this obsidian with anorthite or biotite have been made. H2O or diluted solutions of NH3, HF or HCl have been used as a fluid phase. The experiments were conducted under 2000 bars gas pressure and under isochemical conditions. At the outset of each experiment obsidian and the mixtures have been melted under 2000 bars pressure and then the temperature has been brought down stepwise, in order, to study the sequence and temperature of crystallization directly from the melt. The results of these experiments are plotted on a series of quartz-orthoclase-albite (Q-Ab-Or) melt diagrams, so that a better comparison with the different granitic systems and with the simple Q-Ab-Or-H20 system ofTuttle andBowen, (1958) can be achieved. The melt or crystallization diagrams of these complex granitic systems under study, represent projections of the Q-Ab-Or-An (An= anorthite) tetrahedron on to the base Q-Ab-Or. In all these triangular diagrams, there are three regions of crystallization: quartz, plagioclase and alkalifelspar. These three regions of crystallization are separated from each other by three cotectic lines; which meet at a point: the eutectic point. The sequence of crystallization of the leucocratic minerals; observed in the different granitic systems investigated experimentally here, can be understood with the help of such diagrams easily. From these experiments the following petrogenetically interesting results have been obtained:

    The order of crystallization of granitic melts is to a great extent influenced: by the normative proportion of the Ab/An components and the composition of the fluid phase. (It is not the variation in the An content directly but the variation in the relative proportions of Ab/An, that causes a change in the order of crystallization.) In general, with decreasing Ab/An proportion in a rock or a melt, the amount of albite component in the.eutectic melt decrease,. while at the same time- the amount of quartz and orthoclase components increase. When the Ab/An proportion of a rock is more than 3.5, then the corresponding eutectic melt is of granitic composition; and when the proportion is lesser than 3.5 the eutectic melt is quartz and orthoclase rich and has aplitic composition. Calc-alkaligranites and alkaligranites have an average Ab/An proportion of 4.7 and 10.5, respectively.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Oolithische Strukturen in Pyriten des Ventersdorp-Contact-Reefs im Witwatersrand Gebiet, die bisher als radial pyrites beschrieben wurden, zeigen eine starke Ähnlichkeit zu Eisenoolithen der Pretoria Serie des Transvaal Systems. Letztere wurden bereits als primäre Strukturen gedeutet, an deren Bildung Algen wahrscheinlich wesentlich beteiligt waren. Die Verfasser sind der Ansicht, daß sowohl der authigene Kohlenstoff im Ventersdorp- und Witwatersrand System als auch die oolithischen Strukturen in Pyriten des Ventersdorp-Contact-Reefs wahrscheinlich Überbleibsel von primitiven Organismen darstellen, die vor rund 2750×106 Jahren im Sedimentationsbecken des Witwatersrand Systems existierten.
Oölitic textures present in pyrites of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef at Venterspost Gold Mine, South Africa, which have previously been described as radial pyrites strongly resemble iron oöliths of the Pretoria Series of the Transvaal System. The latter have been considered to be primary textures; a causative connection was believed to have existed between primitive organic life and the formation of these oöliths and related textures. It is suggested that both the authigenic carbonaceous material present in the Ventersdorp- and Witwatersrand Systems and the oölitic textures shown by the pyrite in the Ventersdorp Contact Reef probably represent relicts of an early form of life which existed in the sedimentary basin of the Witwatersrand System some 2,750 × 106 years ago.

Résumé Les textures oolitiques dans les pyrites du Ventersdorp-Contact-Reef dans la région du Witwatersrand, étant dénommées jusqu'ici «radial pyrites», nous montre une affinité très forte avec oolites ferriques de la série Prétoria du système Transvaal. On a déjà interprété les derniers comme textures primaires; probablement alginite. Suivant l'opinion des auteurs, non seulement le carbone authigène dans le système Ventersdorp et Witwatersrand mais encore les textures oolitiques dans les pyrites du Ventersdorp-Contact-Reef sont probablement des restes des organismes primitifs, ayant existés dans le bassin sédimentaire du système Witwatersrand il y a 2750×106 années.

In order to determine whether charge transfer during the collision of ice crystals with riming graupel pellets in thunderstorms may be due to the removal of charged growths on the graupel surface, experiments were performed in which an air jet removed forst or pieces of rime from ice surfaces. The results showed that a frost covered or rimed surface charged positively if it was growing by vapour diffusion and negatively if it was evaporating when the air jet fragmented the surface. Other work has shown that similar results are obtained when ice crystals or ice spheres interact with growing or evaporating ice surfaces and so it appears that the charge transfer process is associated with the removal of charged surface features. These results are of relevance to our understanding of the processes of thunderstorm electrification.  相似文献
