This study discusses the reproducibility of a numerical model for simulating the morphodynamics involved in the transport of large pieces of wood in a braided river, considering the root wad effect and jam formation. The developed numerical model can simulate the behaviour of large pieces of wood using a two-dimensional depth-averaged Eulerian flow model that calculates the water flow and bed morphology. A Lagrange-type wood transport model is used herein, and the applicability of the combined model is discussed through a comparison with obtained experimental results. From the simulation results, we calculate the total braiding index and estimate the deposition patterns of wood pieces for comparison with the experimental results. We then analyse the bed morphology responses and wood deposition patterns in terms of the root wad effect and input supply. Moreover, we discuss the advantages and limitations of the proposed model to predict the large wood dynamics considering the bed morphology. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

In order to confirm the results of the authors’ previous work, which found that the existence of disturbances smaller than
meso-scale eddies is important in large-scale mixing process between the Oyashio and Kuroshio waters in the intermediate layer,
the results of an eddy-resolving model experiment are analyzed and compared with those of an eddy-permitting model. The intermediate
salinity minimum given in the initial condition weakens as integration advances in the eddy-permitting model, while it recovers
rapidly and is maintained thereafter in the eddy-resolving model, initialized from the unrealistic salinity distribution of
the former. Filament-like fine structures in temperature and salinity develop actively in the latter, which are much smaller
in horizontal width than meso-scale eddies, suggesting the importance of such disturbances in the large-scale mixing. The
mixing ratio of the Oyashio water defined by the original Oyashio and Kuroshio waters shows that its value is generally higher
in the intermediate lower sub-layer than in the intermediate upper sub-layer in the Mixed Water Region, and the salinity minimum
exists between layers with low and high values of the mixing ratio with its strong vertical gradient. The eddy transports
of the Oyashio and Kuroshio waters in an isopycnal layer are divided into four components, usual isopycnal mixing of temperature
and salinity being dominant, followed by the component associated with the thickness flux. The southward eddy transport of
the Oyashio water and the northward eddy transport of the Kuroshio water are not symmetric to each other because the thickness-flux-associated

The annual transport of anthropogenic carbon (Canth) to the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) from the Western Subarctic Gyre (WSG) has been re-estimated by using newly
estimated Oyashio transport and Canth concentration, the latter calculated by the recently-established “ΔC*” method with some modifications. Estimated annual Canth transport through the nearshore Oyashio west of 146°E was 0.020 ± 0.010 GtC y−1, closely approximating the previous estimation based on a 1-D model calibrated with the CFC vertical distribution. The present
study, however, found that an additional 0.025 ± 0.010 GtC y−1 of Canth was transported into NPIW in the region east of 146°E. Total Canth transport, 0.045 GtC y−1, contributes about 35% of annual Canth accumulation of the whole temperate North Pacific.

The hydrographic structure and variability in the Kuroshio-Oyashio Transition Area of the northwestern Pacific are briefly
reviewed, focusing on the circulation, frontal structure and water-mass formation from surface to intermediate depths. This
area is a key to understanding climate and ecosystem variations because signals can be detected earlier than major climate
regime shifts and also because species replacement among small pelagic fishes could be related to environmental changes in
this area. We need further studies of the effect of North Pacific Intermediate Water on surface currents and frontal structures
and also studies on the formation and variability of water-masses in surface mixed layer.

Two-dimensional asymmetric merger of two like-signed vorticity monopoles with different sizes and vorticities is examined by combining simplified analytical models and contour dynamics experiments. The model results can capture the key dynamics and hence allow the prediction of the critical merger distance in a number of the situations. The models ignore deformation of one of the two vortices, replacing it with a point vortex, and employ a corotating frame of reference with a rotation rate estimated by point vortices. Thus, the two vortex problem becomes two separate problems of a single vortex in a background shear flow. Vortex merger is found to happen when the vortex cannot resist the background shear flow. Vortex merger and merging processes depend on the centroid distance d, the circulation ratio, (qi and ri are the vorticity and radius, respectively) and initial conditions. In the lowest order, the background flow is approximated by a uniform shear field, and the behavior of an elliptical vortex can be described by the Kida (1981) equation supplemented with one describing the time evolution of the centroid distance. This model reveals that merger takes place because the natural rotation of an elliptical vortex is overcome by the background uniform shear flow; the ellipse inversely rotates and is drawn out by the background straining field. The vortex deformation in a background flow field induces an inward flow at the position of the other vortex; as a result, the centroid distance decreases and two vortices merge. The critical merger distance from this model agrees quite well with the results from contour dynamics experiments for two vortices. Inclusion of higher order non-uniform shear in the background flow extends the critical merger distance, which gives almost perfect estimates for the experiment. In the non-uniform shear flow, partial merger occurs, where the vortex sheds off a filament, but the remaining part of the vortex resumes its natural rotation. 相似文献

An analysis is presented of snapshot data (eastward and northward velocity components: u and v; tracer such as potential temperature: τ) from an eddy-resolving (Rgrid: 1/12°) ocean model experiment, in order to explore a method for improving eddy-permitting
model performance. Horizontal 3 × 3 R-grid averages give the eddy-permitting grid (P-grid: 1/4°) variables: 〈u〉, 〈v〉, and 〈τ〉, where 〈〉 denotes the spatial P-grid scale average. The difference between the horizontal tracer flux across the boundary
face of a P-grid and that across the corresponding faces of R-grids is estimated as F2E. It is found that the correlations among the gradients of u, v, and τ give a good approximation F2C to the estimated flux F2E. The approximated flux is a function of these gradients and the grid size. A method is presented for implementing the F2C for density to an eddying ocean model as an additional advection. Practical experiments were conducted with a realistic configuration.
It is shown that the zonal mean isotherms in the Kuroshio extension region are more flattened in the run using the proposed
method than in another run using the conventional horizontal biharmonic operator, suggesting that the additional flux correction
leads to an enhancement of sub-basin scale mixing. 相似文献

A systematic design procedure and an algorithm are devised for variable gain feedback (VGF) control of buildings with active mass damper (AMD) systems. The limit of the stroke length of the auxiliary mass, which is considered to be one of the most important physical constraints for application of AMD systems to actual structures, is studied. A set of variable feedback gains is designed as a function of a single variable that indicates a trade-off between the reduction of the building response and the amplitude of the auxiliary mass stroke, and this variable is on-line controlled to keep the amplitude of the auxiliary mass stroke constant, and within its limits. A design method of static output feedback controller for modal control of buildings with non-classical damping is also presented. Next, an efficient control method for hybrid structural control is developed, with combined use of the VGF control and the static output feedback control. It is shown through numerical examples that the proposed control method effectively adapts the control performance according to the variation in the intensity level of the external excitations in such a manner that the amplitude of the auxiliary mass stroke is kept within its limits and the control power is restrained as well. Monthly averaged total volume transport of the Indonesian throughflow (ITF) estimated by 14 global ocean data assimilation (ODA) products that are decade to multi-decade long are compared among themselves and with observations from the INSTANT Program (2004–2006). The main goals of the comparisons are to examine the consistency and evaluate the skill of different ODA products in simulating ITF transport. The ensemble averaged, time-mean value of ODA estimates is 13.6 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3/s) for the common 1993–2001 period and 13.9 Sv for the 2004–2006 INSTANT Program period. These values are close to the 15-Sv estimate derived from INSTANT observations. All but one ODA time-mean estimate fall within the range of uncertainty of the INSTANT estimate. In terms of temporal variability, the scatter among different ODA estimates averaged over time is 1.7 Sv, which is substantially smaller than the magnitude of the temporal variability simulated by the ODA systems. Therefore, the overall “signal-to-noise” ratio for the ensemble estimates is larger than one. The best consistency among the products occurs on seasonal-to-interannual time scales, with generally stronger (weaker) ITF during boreal summer (winter) and during La Nina (El Nino) events. The scatter among different products for seasonal-to-interannual time scales is approximately 1 Sv. Despite the good consistency, systematic difference is found between most ODA products and the INSTANT observations. All but the highest-resolution (18 km) ODA product show a dominant annual cycle while the INSTANT estimate and the 18-km product exhibit a strong semi-annual signal. The coarse resolution is an important factor that limits the level of agreement between ODA and INSTANT estimates. Decadal signals with periods of 10–15 years are seen. The most conspicuous and consistent decadal change is a relatively sharp increase in ITF transport during 1993–2000 associated with the strengthening tropical Pacific trade wind. Most products do not show a weakening ITF after the mid-1970s’ associated with the weakened Pacific trade wind. The scatter of ODA estimates is smaller after than before 1980, reflecting the impact of the enhanced observations after the 1980s. To assess the representativeness of using the average over a three-year period (e.g., the span of the INSTANT Program) to describe longer-term mean, we investigate the temporal variations of the three-year low-pass ODA estimates. The average variation is about 3.6 Sv, which is largely due to the increase of ITF transport from 1993 to 2000. However, the three-year average during the 2004–2006 INSTANT Program period is within 0.5 Sv of the long-term mean for the past few decades. 相似文献

A conspicuous coronal dome formation around a prominence was photographed during the eclipse of 15 February 1961 with the 120-cm reflector of the Haute Provence Observatory with an excellent image definition. A detailed isophotic map of the dome formation was constructed after estimating a calibration curve. The bright dome is interpreted as an aggregate of free electrons trapped in a gigantic bundle of magnetic lines of force. The free electrons are concentrated in the central part and the degree of concentration seems to be the least at the top of dome and to increase with decreasing height. The bright dome surrounds a dark one. The minimum extension of the dark dome formation along the line of sight is estimated.
