The BATHYMAY marine survey was carried out in January 2004 around the French volcanic island of Mayotte, onboard the research vessel Marion Dufresne 2. Multibeam bathymetry revealed for the first time the morphology of the whole outer slope. Preliminary interpretations show broad canyons that deeply incise the slope, numerous volcanoes and huge landslides. Large submarine plateaus are also highlighted, bounded by steep cliffs and active normal faults. A model for Mayotte is suggested, in which eruptive activity, sometimes influenced by normal faulting, was concentrated along a N140° regional line (the Comoros archipelago axis), with landslide activity concentrated on the northeastern and southwestern flanks of this line. Coregionalization analysis has been presented as a method of multi-scale analysis for multivariate spatial data. Despite an
increasing use of this method in environmental and earth sciences, the uncertainty associated with the estimation of parameters
in coregionalization analysis (e.g., sills and functions of sills) is potentially high and has not yet been characterized.
This article aims to discuss the theory underlying coregionalization analysis and assess the robustness and limits of the
method. A theoretical framework is developed to calculate the ergodic and fluctuation variance-covariance matrices of least-squares
estimators of sills in the linear model of coregionalization. To adjust for the positive semidefiniteness constraint on estimated
coregionalization matrices, a confidence interval estimation procedure for sills and functions of sills is presented. Thereafter,
the relative importance of uncertainty measures (bias and variance) for sills and structural coefficients of correlation and
determination is assessed under different scenarios to identify factors controlling their uncertainty. Our results show that
the sampling grid density, the choice of the least-squares estimator of sills, the positive semidefiniteness constraint, the
presence of scale dependence in the correlations, and the number and range of variogram models, all affect the level of uncertainty,
sometimes through multiple interactions. The asymptotic properties of variogram model parameter estimators in a bounded sampling
domain impose a theoretical limit to their accuracy and precision. Because of this limit, the uncertainty was found to be
high for several scenarios, especially with three variogram models, and was often more dependent on the ratio of variogram
range to domain extent than on the sampling grid density. In practice, in the coregionalization analysis of a real dataset,
the circular requirement for sill estimates in the calculation of uncertainty measures makes the quantification of uncertainty
very problematic, if not impossible. The use of coregionalization analysis must be made with due knowledge of the uncertainty

Fractures or cracks in rocks and soils are thin planar features of high resistivity, embedded in a more conductive bulk volume. In soils, several processes, particularly swelling and shrinkage of clays, result in cracks and can regenerate macroporosity. Their detection and the assessment of their evolution necessitate the use of non-invasive techniques. Although cracks have a major influence on the electrical resistivity of bulk material their complete geometrical characterisation achieved through the use of electrical resistivity measurements remains difficult due to the lack of appropriate inversion models. An inversion model based on the method of moments (MoM) has been developed, and is presented here. Direct simulations demonstrate the model's ability to reconstruct real experimental data. The influence of various object parameters on the model's accuracy was tested, showing that the model is sensitive to all the geometric characteristics of a crack. The inversion of both simulated and experimental data has demonstrated the model's ability to calculate the initial position, width and depth of several different cracks. 相似文献

Ephemeral ponds (EPs) are seasonally flooded isolated wetlands that provide a variety of hydroecological benefits, including the provision of breeding habitat for several amphibian and invertebrate species. However, the lack of their explicit representation in hydrological models limits a comprehensive understanding of their interaction with surrounding landscapes and their vulnerability in the context of human interventions and climate change. The purpose of this research was to improve the isolated wetland module of the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to better represent EP hydrology. The changes include (1) representation of groundwater and hypodermic flow as the only inflows from the pond drainage surface, due to the intermittent and negligible presence of inflow from surface runoff in forested ponds, (2) revision of how evapotranspiration within EPs is represented and (3) implementation of distinct volume-area-depth relationships for ponds based on their geometrical shape. The accuracy of these improvements was assessed against that of a previous isolated wetland formulation in replicating water depth observations of 10 EPs of a portion of the Kenauk forest (68 km2) in the Canadian Shield of the Outaouais region (Québec, Canada). The comparison results show that the revised SWAT model presented here significantly improves the distinct filling and drying water cycle of EPs (average root mean square error of 0.1 m of the revised model vs. 0.23 m for the original model). Besides, the new module allowed to identify that hypodermic flow, evapotranspiration and seepage to the underlying soil are the main EP source and sinks. The new module also allowed to explicitly quantify the differences in filling/drying pattern of the EPs of the Kenauk forest and unlike the original model structure, the new module was able to closely replicate the interannual variation of spring and annual hydroperiod duration. 相似文献

Inferred temperatures from chironomids preserved in the varved sediment of Lake Silvaplana in the Eastern Swiss Alps were
compared with instrumental data obtained from a meteorological station in Sils-Maria, on the shore of Lake Silvaplana, for
the time interval 1850–2001. At near-annual resolution, the general patterns of chironomid-inferred temperature changes followed
the meteorological record over the last ∼150 years (r
Pearson = 0.65, P = 0.01) and 87% of the inferences had deviations from the instrumental data below the root-mean-square error of prediction
(RMSEP). When the inferences were compared with a 2-year running mean in the meteorological data, 94% of the inferences had
differences with the instrumental data below the RMSEP, indicating that more than half of the inaccurate inferences may have
been due to errors in varve counting. Larger deviations from the instrumental data were also obtained from samples with low
percentages of fossil taxa represented in the training set used for temperature reconstruction and/or assemblages with poor
fit to temperature. Changes in total phosphorus (TP, as inferred by diatoms) and/or greater precipitation were possible factors
affecting the accuracy of the temperature reconstruction. Although these factors might affect the quantitative estimates,
obtaining >80% accurate temperature inferences suggests that chironomid analysis is a reliable tool for reconstructing mean
July air temperature quantitatively over the last ∼150 years in Lake Silvaplana. 相似文献

Many efforts have been done in the modelling of Plinian columns. However, until now, the inverse problem of the reconstruction of a Plinian event from observed data has been only roughly tackled. This paper discusses the efficient variational data assimilation (VDA) that manages the optimization iterate sequence by means of gradient computations. Theoretical developments of VDA are presented for both the Woods equations and a generic system allowing for the modelling of the Navier–Stokes equations. Two- and three-dimensional unsteady Plinian models being based on the latters, VDA could be clearly performed on their differentiable subset of equations. 相似文献

The spatial variability of seagrass meadows in Arcachon Bay, was studied between 1988 and 2008 using a combination of mapping techniques based on aerial photographs for intertidal dwarf-grass (Zostera noltii) beds and acoustic sonar for permanently submerged eelgrass (Zostera marina) populations. The results show a severe decline over the period for both species, as well as an acceleration of the decline since 2005 for Z. noltii. The total surface regression over the studied period is estimated to be 22.8 km2 for Z. noltii and 2.7 km2 for Z. marina, which represent declines of 33 and 74% respectively. 相似文献

This study focuses on the development of an approach to document the hydrological characteristics of peatlands and understand their potential influence on runoff processes and groundwater flow dynamics. Spatial calculations were performed using geographic information systems data in order to evaluate the distribution of peatlands according to (a) neighbouring hydrogeological units and (b) their position within the hydrographic network. The data obtained from these calculations were plotted in a multiple trilinear diagram (two ternary plots projected into a diamond‐shaped diagram) that illustrates the position of a given peatland within the hydrogeological environment. The data allow for the segregation of peatlands according to groups sharing similarities as well as the identification of peatlands that are most likely to have similar hydrological functions. The approach was tested in a 19,549 km2 region of the southern portion of the Barlow‐Ojibway Clay Belt (in Abitibi‐Témiscamingue, Canada) and lead to a conceptual model representing the hydrological interactions between peatlands, aquifers, and surface waters. This approach allows for a geographic information systems‐based differentiation of headwater peatland complexes that are likely to interact with aquifers and to supply continuous baseflow to small streams from lowland peatland complexes of the clay plain that are isolated from surrounding aquifers but that can act as storage reservoirs within the hydrographic network. The typology is further used to discuss land management strategies aimed at preserving peatland hydrodiversity within the study region. The proposed approach relies on widely applicable hydrogeological and hydrographic criteria and provides a tool that could be used for assessing peatland hydrodiversity in other regions of the planet. 相似文献
