The Dolní Věstonice–Pavlov–Milovice area (Czech Republic) on the slopes of the Pavlov Hills provides an opportunity for correlating the geomorphology of the Dyje River valley with Gravettian settlement patterns. Although the sites vary in size and complexity, they create a regular chain of strategic locations at elevations between 200 m and 240 m asl. In 2009, a road collapsed into deserted cellars inside the village of Milovice and revealed a complex of archaeological layers deep within loess, at an elevation of only 175 m asl. This paper presents an analysis of this atypical archaeological site location and compares the results with the other sites. We argue that this location allowed direct contact with mammoth herds concentrated on the floodplain, while the aquatic environment offered possibilities for gathering plants and fishing. This site represents a new aspect of organized settlement, hunting strategies, and short‐distance human movements during the Gravettian within this area. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

The Santa Lucia Shear Zone (SLSZ, Corsica) is a granulite-facies Permian shear zone that developed after the emplacement of
a deep-seated gabbroic intrusion. New structural data shows that the SLSZ results from the juxtaposition of three spatially
distinct mylonite belts, which are the product of the interaction between magmatism, metamorphism and shearing over a temperature
range from ~800 to ~400°C. During the earlier high-grade deformation stage, which was accompanied by decompression from ~7
to ~5 kb at ~800°C, the SLSZ has accommodated high finite strain on a shear zone ≥1 km wide. Strain became increasingly localized
as temperature decreased, but rather than reactivating pre-existing shear zones as commonly expected, younger mylonites expanded
into previously unsheared rock, extending the total width of the shear zone. The zonation of different fabrics across the
SLSZ suggests that pre-existing compositional and grain size heterogeneities in the starting material played a key role in

We measured fluxes of NH4+ and NO3− and δ15N of NH4+, sediment, and porewater NH4+ from incubated sediment cores along a nitrate gradient and in different seasons from Childs River, MA. NH4+ flux was low at the downstream site with the lowest concentration of organic matter (high salinity) but otherwise did not
differ along the estuary. The δ15N of regenerated NH4+ ranged from +6.1‰ to +15.3‰ but did not vary significantly with season or salinity; the mean for the entire estuary was +10.4 ± 0.5‰.
Based on differences between the δ15N of regenerated NH4+ and sediment, and expected isotopic fractionation due to remineralization, we concluded that nitrification occurred after
remineralization of NH4+. Differences between the δ15N of regenerated NH4+ and the δ15N of porewater NH4+ provided further evidence of nitrification. We estimated that 11% to 48% of remineralized NH4+ underwent coupled nitrification–denitrification before release into the water column. In spite of losses to denitrification,
NH4+ flux released 1.4 mol N m−2 year−1 to the water column and could provide 42% of phytoplankton nitrogen requirements. 相似文献

Featuring 3 000-km-long large and hot orogen, the Mantiqueira Province provides a rare opportunity to study the process of gravitational collapse at mid to deep crustal levels. Distinct but contemporary (~500 Ma) post-collisional intrusions show structures and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) fabrics related to their emplacements, recording different flow patterns. In southern deep-seated intrusions, ellipsoidal-shaped roots with gabbroic-to-hybrid cores surrounded by granitic rocks show concentric patterns of AMS fabrics that cut across the NE-trending regional foliation. In contrast, northern intrusions, exposed as the upper sections of batholith-size bodies of coarse-grained granite emplaced at the shallow to mid-crust, show general NS-trending magnetic fabrics roughly parallel to strike of the orogen and the regional foliation of host rocks. These contrasting magnetic patterns from shallow to deeper crust suggest vertical magma migration from the overthickened orogenic core to be emplaced across its thinner stretched flanks during the gravitational collapse of the orogenic edifice. 相似文献
