Coma Structures in Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3, Components B and C,Between January and May 2006

The Jupiter family comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 has been widely observed since 1995 after a nucleus break-up event produced
at least five components labeled 73P-A to E. During the 2006 appearance, two of them (B and C) showed very strong coma activity.
Our R-filter imaging of 73P-B & C from 21 January to 25 May 2006 revealed the presence of fan-like structures in the comae
of both components and evidence for further fragmentation events in component B. As of early April 2006, component C showed
two jets emanating from the nucleus, with one continuously visible. Through a simulation of the orbital geometry we infer
that the rotation axis of 73P-C has an inclination of 20° to the orbital plane and a longitude of 45° at perihelion. The coma
activity of component B was highly variable, displaying signatures of at least 3 fragmentation events. The coma was characterized
by the continuous presence of a jet roughly in sunward direction, starting from the beginning of May. The first fragmentation
event of component B may have happened between April 16 and April 26, leading to the presence of at least 6 fragments detected
in images of May 2. The second one happened on or shortly before May 8, the third one between May 18 and 24. For the rotation
axis of 73P-B we infer an inclination of 5°–15° to the orbital plane and a longitude of 20°–30° at perihelion. 相似文献

Chalk and other porous rocks are known to behave differently when saturated with different pore fluids. The behavior of these rocks varies with different pore fluids and additional deformation occurs when the pore fluid composition changes. In this article, we review the evidence that behavior in porous rocks is pore‐fluid‐dependent, present a constitutive model for pore‐fluid‐dependent porous rocks, and present a compilation of previously published data to develop quantitative relationships between various pore fluids and mechanical behavior. The model proposed here is based on a state parameter approach for weathering and has similarities to models previously proposed for weathering‐sensitive rocks in that the values for parameters that characterize material behavior vary as a function of weathering. Comparisons with published experimental data indicate that the model is capable of reproducing observed behavior of chalk under a variety of loading conditions and changes in pore fluid composition. This paper deals with seismic analysis of plan‐asymmetric r/c frame multi‐storey buildings. Non‐linear numerical analyses are carried out by using a lumped plasticity model for beams and a multi‐spring model for columns, the latter one introduced to account for axial force–biaxial bending moment interaction. A comparison between numerical analyses and experimental test results is reported in order to calibrate the numerical model, showing that the adopted model is very suitable. In order to study the effects of the earthquake orthogonal component, the seismic response of the modelled structure under uni‐directional excitation is compared to the one under bi‐directional excitation. Such comparison shows that the maximum base shear and the top displacement are not very sensitive to the presence of the orthogonal component, which, conversely, leads to large increase in the column plastic excursions. The Breccia Museo is one of the most debated volcanic formations of the Campi Flegrei volcanic district. The deposit, made
up of six distinctive stratigraphic units, has been interpreted by some as the proximal facies of the major caldera-forming
Campanian Ignimbrite eruption, and by others as the product of several, more recent, independent and localized events. New
geochemical and chemostratigraphical data and Ar–Ar age determinations for several units of the Breccia Museo deposits (~39 ka),
correlate well with the Campanian Ignimbrite-forming eruption. The chemical zoning of the Breccia Museo deposits is interpreted
here to be a consequence of a three-stage event that tapped a vertically zoned trachytic magma chamber.

Gravity changes are presented from a series of field microgravity surveys conducted at Mt Etna between August 1994 and November 1996, a period including the 1995–1996 explosive summit activity. Data were collected along a microgravity network of 69 stations at a monthly to annual sampling rate, depending on each subarray of the network.
Results show that seasonal changes in water level within the volcano may induce gravity changes of up to 20 μgal on Etna's southern slope, and indicate that significant magma movement occurred within and below Etna's edifice between 1994 and 1996. In particular, between September 1994 and October 1995, a mass increase of 2 × 101 0 kg occurred 2000 m beneath the summit craters. Between October 1995 and July 1996 this mass was lost, while another 2 × 101 0 kg was injected at about 1000 m a.s.l. into the 1989 fracture system. From the gravity data alone, it is not possible to distinguish whether the first shallow intrusion (1994–1995) was then injected laterally into the 1989 fracture, or summit activity was fed by the first shallow intrusion, while new magma entered the 1989 fracture system.
While magma was being redistributed within the volcanic edifice, measurements along an E–W-trending profile on the southern slope of the volcano detected some 1.5 × 101 1 kg of magma accumulating 2–3 km below sea level between October 1995 and November 1996. 相似文献

Composition of chromiferous spinel included in olivines of Mg-rich basalts and gabbros of the Deccan Traps (Gujarat and Western Ghats) are reported here. They vary from Al-rich compositions [Al2O3 = 53wt.%; Cr#, 100Cr/(Cr + Al) = 12] to Cr-rich compositions [Cr2O3 = 51wt.%; Cr# = 84], and from Cr-Al rich compositions towards Cr-rich Ti-magnetite (TiO2 up to 23 wt.%, ulvöspinel up to 67mol.%). The Mg# [100Mg/(Mg + Fe2+)] of spinel decreases from 81 to nearly zero. The highest Cr# has been found in the Bushe Fm., Thakurvadi Fm., and some high-Ti basalts of the Pavagadh section, whereas some of the low-Ti basalts of Saurashtra have Al-rich compositions typical of spinels found in mid-ocean ridge basalts. The chemical composition of the Deccan Trap spinels is completely different compared to that observed in mantle spinel suites, with very few exceptions. The decreasing Al and increasing Fe and Ti of spinel seems to be mainly the result of decrease of Mg in the locally coexisting melts and favourable cationic substitutions in the lattice. There is barely any evidence of general relationships between the composition of the Deccan spinels and inferred mantle sources of the host magmas. Pyroxene inclusions in spinels may witness a high-pressure stage of crystallization, but the possibility of non-equilibrium crystallization, or even magma mixing, cannot be ruled out. Overall, the compositional ranges of chromiferous spinel in the Deccan Traps closely match those observed in the other Large Igneous Provinces having mafic/ultramafic intrusions and mafic magma compositions (e.g., Siberian Traps, Karoo, Emeishan). 相似文献

Permeability–porosity relationships for sediments from the northern Barbados, Costa Rica, Nankai, and Peru subduction zones were examined based on sediment type, grain size distribution, and general mechanical and chemical compaction history. Greater correlation was observed between permeability and porosity in siliciclastic sediments, diatom oozes, and nannofossil chalks than in nannofossil oozes. For siliciclastic sediments, grouping of sediments by percentage of clay-sized material yields relationships that are generally consistent with results from other marine settings and suggests decreasing permeability as percentage of clay-sized material increases. Correction of measured porosities for smectite content improved the correlation of permeability–porosity relationships for siliciclastic sediments and diatom oozes. The relationship between permeability and porosity for diatom oozes is very similar to the relationship in siliciclastic sediments, and permeabilities of both sediment types are related to the amount of clay-size particles. In contrast, nannofossil oozes have higher permeability values by 1.5 orders of magnitude than siliciclastic sediments of the same porosity and show poor correlation between permeability and porosity. More indurated calcareous sediments, nannofossil chalks, overlap siliciclastic permeabilities at the lower end of their measured permeability range, suggesting similar consolidation patterns at depth. Thus, the lack of correlation between permeability and porosity for nannofossil oozes is likely related to variations in mechanical and chemical compaction at shallow depths. This study provides the foundation for a much-needed global database with fundamental properties that relate to permeability in marine settings. Further progress in delineating controls on permeability requires additional carefully documented permeability measurements on well-characterized samples. 相似文献

This paper discusses the potentials of very high-resolution (VHR) stereo imagery for automatic generation of digital surface models (DSM) and 3D information extraction on large metropolitan cities. Stereo images acquired by GeoEye-1 on Dakar (Senegal) and Guatemala City (Guatemala) and by WorldView-2 on Panama City (Panama), Constitucion (Chile), Kabul (Afghanistan), Teheran (Iran), Kathmandu (Nepal), and San Salvador (El Salvador) were processed following a rigorous photogrammetric approach. The work focuses on evaluating the quality of the DSMs in relation to the image and terrain characteristics. The size of the datasets, the variety of case studies, and the complexity of the scenarios allow to critically analyze the potentials of VHR stereo imagery for 3D landscape modeling for natural hazards assessment. 相似文献
