We have investigated the carbonates in the impact melts and in a monolithic clast of highly shocked Coconino sandstone of Meteor Crater, AZ to evaluate whether melting or devolatilization is the dominant response of carbonates during high‐speed meteorite impact. Both melt‐ and clast‐carbonates are calcites that have identical crystal habits and that contain anomalously high SiO2 and Al2O3. Also, both calcite occurrences lack any meteoritic contamination, such as Fe or Ni, which is otherwise abundantly observed in all other impact melts and their crystallization products at Meteor Crater. The carbon and oxygen isotope systematics for both calcite deposits suggest a low temperature environment (<100 °C) for their precipitation from an aqueous solution, consistent with caliche. We furthermore subjected bulk melt beads to thermogravimetric analysis and monitored the evolving volatiles with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. CO2 yields were <5 wt%, with typical values in the 2 wt% range; also total CO2 loss is positively correlated with H2O loss, an indication that most of these volatiles derive from the secondary calcite. Also, transparent glasses, considered the most pristine impact melts, yield 100 wt% element totals by EMPA, suggesting complete loss of CO2. The target dolomite decomposed into MgO, CaO, and CO2; the CO2 escaped and the CaO and MgO combined with SiO2 from coexisting quartz and FeO from the impactor to produce the dominant impact melt at Meteor Crater. Although confined to Meteor Crater, these findings are in stark contrast to Osinski et al. (2008) who proposed that melting of carbonates, rather than devolatilization, is the dominant process during hypervelocity impact into carbonate‐bearing targets, including Meteor Crater.  相似文献

Covariance localisation is used in many implementations of the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) but has been shown by Lorenc and by Kepert to significantly degrade the main balances in the atmosphere and ocean. Kepert recently introduced an improved form of localisation that reduced or eliminated this problem. This paper presents an extension to that approach, in which the background state is decomposed into balanced and unbalanced parts as part of the localisation. This new balance-aware localisation is shown to be a slight improvement on the earlier work of Kepert and a substantial improvement on the standard Schur-product localisation. Balance-aware localisation also enables the use of some sets of alternative analysis variables that do not work well with conventional localisation in the EnKF. It is shown using identical-twin experiments with a global spectral shallow-water model and no separate initialisation step that analysis to geopotential, streamfunction and velocity potential is slightly more accurate than is analysis to geopotential and the wind components. Analysis to unbalanced (instead of total) geopotential, streamfunction and velocity potential leads to slightly less accurate but significantly better balanced analyses than the other choices of analysis variables. If nonlinear normal modes initialisation is incorporated in the analysis cycling, then the conventional localisation becomes the most accurate method. However, initialisation may be undesirable or unavailable, and the comparison of system performance without localisation is useful since it helps improve understanding of the balance issues in EnKF-based assimilation systems.  相似文献

Inter-station Green's functions estimated from ambient noise studies have been widely used to investigate crustal structure. However, most studies are restricted to continental areas and use fundamental-mode surface waves only. In this study, we recover inter-station surface (Scholte-Rayleigh) wave empirical Green's function (EGFs) of both the fundamental- and the first-higher mode using one year of continuous seismic noise records on the vertical component from 28 ocean bottom seismographs deployed in the Quebrada/Discovery/Gofar transform faults region on the East Pacific Rise. The average phase-velocity dispersion of the fundamental mode (period band 2–30 s) and the first-higher mode (period band 3–7 s) from all EGFs are used to invert for the 1-D average, shear-velocity structure in the crust and uppermost mantle using a model-space search algorithm. The preferred shear-velocity models reveal low velocities (4.29 km/s) between Moho and 25 km depth below sea-surface, suggesting the absence of a fast uppermost mantle lid in this young (0–2 Myr) oceanic region. An even more pronounced low-velocity zone, with shear velocities ~3.85 km/s, appears at a depth between 25–40 km below sea-surface. Along with previous results, our study indicates that the shear velocity in the uppermost oceanic mantle increases with increasing seafloor age, consistent with age-related lithospheric cooling.  相似文献

We study the gravitational lensing effects of spiral galaxies by taking a model of the Milky Way and computing its lensing properties. The model is composed of a spherical Hernquist bulge, a Miyamoto–Nagai disc and an isothermal halo. As a strong lens, a spiral galaxy like the Milky Way can give rise to four different imaging geometries. They are (i) three images on one side of the galaxy centre ('disc triplets'), (ii) three images with one close to the centre ('core triplets'), (iii) five images and (iv) seven images. Neglecting magnification bias, we show that the core triplets, disc triplets and fivefold imaging are roughly equally likely. Even though our models contain edge-on discs, their image multiplicities are not dominated by disc triplets. The halo is included for completeness, but it has a small effect on the caustic structure, the time delays and brightnesses of the images.
The Milky Way model has a maximum disc (i.e. the halo is not dynamically important in the inner parts). Strong lensing by nearly edge-on disc galaxies breaks the degeneracy between the relative contributions of the disc and halo to the overall rotation curve. If a spiral galaxy has a submaximum disc, then the astroid caustic shrinks dramatically in size, whilst the radial caustic shrinks more modestly. This causes changes in the relative likelihood of the image geometries, specifically (i) core triplets are now ∼9/2 times more likely than disc triplets, (ii) the cross-section for threefold imaging is reduced by a factor of ∼2/3, whilst (iii) the cross-section for fivefold imaging is reduced by ∼1/2. Although multiple imaging is less likely (the cross-sections are smaller), the average total magnification is greater. The time delays are smaller, as the total projected lensing mass is reduced.  相似文献

We present the results of a survey, the deepest to date, for H  i emission at 21 cm and OH emission at 18 cm (lines at 1612, 1665, 1667 and 1720 MHz) in the direction towards the Galactic globular clusters M15, M2, NGC 6934, NGC 7006 and Pal 13. The aim is to measure the amount of hydrogen in the intracluster medium, and to find OH masers in the circumstellar envelopes of globular cluster red giants. We present a tentative detection of  0.3 M  of neutral hydrogen in M15 and possible detections of neutral hydrogen in M2 and Pal 13. We derive upper limits to the neutral hydrogen content of NGC 6934 and 7006. No OH emission is detected. We also present deep H  i data of the northern tip of the Magellanic Stream behind Pal 13.  相似文献

Abstract— In this paper, we provide an overview of meteors with high beginning height. During the recent Leonid meteor storms, as well as within the regular double station video observations of other meteor showers, we recorded 164 meteors with a beginning height above 130 km. We found that beginning heights between 130 and 150 km are quite usual, especially for the Leonid meteor shower. Conversely, meteors with beginning heights above 160 km are very rare even among Leonids. From the meteor light curves, we are able to distinguish two different processes that govern radiation of the meteors at different altitudes. Light curves vary greatly above 130 km and exhibit sudden changes in meteor brightness. Sputtering from the meteoroid surface is the dominating process during this phase of the meteor luminous trajectory. Around 130 km, the process switches to ablation and the light curves become similar to the light curves of standard meteors. The sputtering model was successfully applied to explain the difference in the beginning heights of high‐altitude Leonid and Perseid meteors. We show also that this process in connection with high altitude fragmentation could explain the anomalously high beginning heights of several relatively faint meteors.  相似文献

We re-assess the question of a systematic time delay between the formation of the progenitor and its explosion in a Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) using the Hubble Higher- z Supernova Search sample. While a previous analysis indicated a significant time delay, with a most likely value of 3.4 Gyr, effectively ruling out all previously proposed progenitor models, our analysis shows that the time-delay estimate is dominated by systematic errors, in particular due to uncertainties in the star formation history (SFH). We find that none of the popular progenitor models under consideration can be ruled out with any significant degree of confidence. The inferred time delay is mainly determined by the peak in the assumed SFH. We show that, even with a much larger supernova sample, the time-delay distribution cannot be reliably reconstructed without better constraints on the SFH.  相似文献
