The proto-Philippine Sea Plate(pPSP)has been proposed by several authors to account for the origin of the Mesozoic supra-subduction ophiolites along the Philippine archipelago. In this paper,a comprehensive review of the ophiolites in the eastern portion of the Philippines is undertaken.Available data on the geology, ages and geochemical signatures of the oceanic lithospheric fragments in Luzon(Isabela,Lagonoy in Camarines Norte, and Rapu-Rapu island),Central Philippines(Samar,Tacloban,Malitbog and Southeast Bohol),and eastern Mindanao(Dinagat and Pujada)are presented.Characteristics of the Halmahera Ophiolite to the south of the Philippines are also reviewed for comparison.Nearly all of the crust-mantle sequences preserved along the eastern Philippines share Early to Late Cretaceous ages. The geochemical signatures of mantle and crustal sections reflect both mid-oceanic ridge and suprasubduction signatures.Although paleomagnetic information is currently limited to the Samar Ophiolite, results indicate a near-equatorial Mesozoic supra-subduction zone origin. In general, correlation of the crust-mantle sequences along the eastern edge of the Philippines reveal that they likely are fragments of the Mesozoic pPSP.  相似文献

Watershed management efforts in agriculturally dominated landscapes of North America face nearly two centuries of laws and policies that encouraged habitat destruction. Although streams and wetlands in these landscapes are actively being restored using designs that incorporate science and engineering, watershed drainage laws can constrain action or impact passively restored or naturalized habitat. In general, drainage laws require removal of any riparian vegetation or wood deemed to obstruct flow in streams regulated as drains. We use a case study from Indiana (USA) to introduce the shortcomings of drainage laws for allowing large wood, which is an important habitat feature, to remain in stream ecosystems. Removals of large wood from monitored stream reaches in a regulated drain were associated with subsequent declines in fish biomass. Such legal activities represent an important environmental management problem that exists under drainage laws which apply to streams over a widespread geographic region of North America. Recent litigation in Wisconsin (USA) suggests that if state legislatures fail to update these antiquated laws, the courts may act in favour of science-based management of drains. The statutes and regulations that govern agricultural drainage warrant careful consideration if streams within drainage districts are to be managed to improve ecological function. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Five temperate seagrasses (Amphibolis antartica, Halophila ovalis, Posidonia australis, Posidonia sinuosa and Zostera nigricaulis) were surveyed along the south-west coast of Western Australia. These morphological different seagrasses grow in contrasting sediments with large variations in sedimentary organic matter, carbonate and iron contents. We tested if sulfur composition in the plants responded to sulfur dynamics in the sediments and if plant morphology affected the sulfur composition of the plants. The sediments were characterized by low sulfate reduction rates (<9 mmol m?2day?1), low concentrations of dissolved sulfides in the pore waters (<74 μM) and low burial of sulfides (total reducible sulfur <0.8 mol m?2) in the sediments. However, all seagrasses showed high intrusion in the below-ground parts with up to 84 % of the sulfur derived from sedimentary sulfides. There were no direct links between sulfur in the plants and sulfur dynamics in the sediments, probably due to low iron contents in the sediments limiting the buffering capacity of the sediments and exposing the plants to sulfides despite low rates of production and low pools of sulfides. The intrusion was linked between plant compartments (roots, rhizomes and leaves) for the two small species (H. ovalis and Z. nigricaulis), whereas the intrusion into the leaves was limited for the larger species (P. australis and P. sinuosa) and for A. antarctica, where extensive rhizomes and roots and the long stem for A. antarctica separate the leaves from the sediment compartment. Elevated intrusion was observed at two study locations, where natural deposition of organic matter or nutrient enrichment may be contributing factors to enhanced sulfide pressure.  相似文献
