The pressure of the reaction albite=jadeite and quartz was measured at 600° C by workers in six geophysical laboratories for the purpose of comparing pressure calibration procedures for the solid-pressure piston-cylinder apparatus. All groups used the same starting mix of crystalline reactant and products and all obtained hydrothermal reversals of the equilibrium. Solid pressure media used included talc, NaCl, boron nitride, pyrophyllite, pyrex glass and crushable ceramic. Various means of calibration were used, including internal standardization by transitions in indicator substances and the piston-in, piston-out bracketing method.There was agreement among all groups—the average preferred value of 16.3 kilobars at 600° C is enclosed by all of the error brackets assigned by the various investigators. This average preferred value is lower by nearly two kilobars than the often-quoted extrapolation of Birch and LeComte's data (1960). It will be important for both petrology and high-pressure technology to test this result in a very high gas pressure apparatus.  相似文献

Aragonite, the dense form of CaCO3, grew hydrothermally at 100–300° C and dry at 300–400° C at very low pressures from calcite strained by grinding. Nearly complete inversion to aragonite occurred in some runs with Ca-Mg chloride solutions at 0–2.4 kb and 100–200° C on strained calcite having a (10¯14) reflection with a half-width of 0.48° 2 Cu K. A little aragonite grew dry at one atm. from the ground calcite at 300–400° C in a few hrs. Simultaneous shear during recrystallization of calcite in a rotating squeezer resulted in significant aragonite at 300–400° C several kb. below the stability field. No inversion occurred in any ground calcite when previously annealed in CO2 at 500° C for a few hrs. Thermochemical data show that at least 200 cal/mole of strain energy can be produced in calcite by mild deformation. This much stored energy would lower the pressure requirements of aragonite, relative to the strained calcite by more than 3 kb, and our observation that aragonite growth was faster than strain recovery of calcite indicates that aragonite can grow in nature at reduced pressures from strained calcite.Some experiments were also carried out on highly magnesian calcites with the thought that aragonite might also form at the expense of this metastable material. No aragonite was produced, but the possibility that this mechanism could be operative in nature cannot be discounted.The microtexture of aragonitic deformed marbles from NW Washington (prehnite-pumpellyite facies rocks, courtesy of J. A. Vance) as well as electron probe microanalysis of these rocks indicates that aragonite selectively replaced highly strained calcite. The calcite-aragonite transition is thus a questionable indicator of high-pressure in certain metamorphic rocks.  相似文献

The enthalpies of solution of petrologically important phases in the system MgO-Al2O3-SiO 2 were measured in a melt of composition 2PbO · B2O3 at 970 ± 2K. The substances investigated included synthetic and natural (meteoritic) enstatite (MgSiO3), synthetic aluminous enstatite (MgSiO30.9Al2O30.1), synthetic and natural cordierite (Mg2Al4Si5O18), synthetic and natural sapphirine (approx. 7MgO·9Al2O3 · 3SiO2), synthetic spinel (MgAl2O4), natural sillimanite (Al2SiO5), synthetic forsterite (Mg2SiO4), synthetic pyrope (Mg3Al2Si3O12), natural quartz (SiO2), synthetic periclase (MgO) and corundum (Al2O3). Improvement in standardization of the calorimeter solvent made possible greater precision in this study than obtainable in former work in this laboratory on some of the same substances.The enthalpies of formation of enstatite, synthetic cordierite, forsterite and spinel are in reasonable agreement with values previously determined by solution calorimetry. The enthalpy of formation of enstatite is about 0.7 kcal less negative than the value for clinoenstatite resulting from the HF calorimetry of Torgesen and Sahama (J. Amer. Chem. Soc.70. 2156–2160, 1948), and is in accord with predictions based on analysis of published pyroxene equilibrium work. Aluminous enstatite with 10 wt.% Al2O3 shows an enthalpy of solution markedly lower than pure MgSiO3: the measurements lead to an estimate of the enthalpy of formation at 970 K for MgAl2SiO6 (Mg-Tschermak) orthopyroxene of + 9.4 ± 1.5 kcal/mole from MgSiO3 and Al2O3.Comparison of the enthalpies of formation of synthetic cordierite and anhydrous natural low-iron cordierite shows that they are energetically quite similar and that the synthetic cordierite is not likely to have large amounts of (Al, Si) tetrahedral disorder. Comparison of the enthalpies of formation of synthetic sapphirine and natural low-iron sapphirine shows, on the other hand, that the former is not a good stability model for the latter. The lower enthalpy of formation of the high-temperature synthetic sample is undoubtedly a consequence of cation disordering.The enthalpy of formation of natural sillimanite is considerably less negative than given by the tables of Robie andWaldbaum (U.S. Geol. Surv. Bull.1259 1968).The measured enthalpy of formation of synthetic pyrope is consistent with that deduced from published equilibrium diagrams in conjunction with the present measured enthalpy of formation of aluminous enstatite. Calculation of the entropy of synthetic pyrope from the present data yields surprisingly high values and suggests that synthetic pyrope is not a good stability model for natural pyrope-rich garnets. Hence, considerable doubt exists about the direct quantitative application of experimental diagrams involving pyropic garnet to discussions of the garnet stability field in the Earth's outer regions.  相似文献

An experimental determination of the reaction MgCO3 + MgSiO3 = Mg2SiO4 + CO2 between 20 and 40 kbars and in the range 1000–1500°C yields an average pressure effect on the equilibrium of 44 bars/°C. This result shows that the assemblage forsterite and carbon dioxide is not stable under most pressure and temperature conditions expected in the upper mantle. Hypotheses requiring the presence of free CO2 in the low-velocity zone, CO2 as a drive mechanism for kimberlite emplacement, or action of a free CO2 phase in ultramafic rocks may need considerable revision.  相似文献

The stability field of the end-member scapolite meionite was determined in piston-cylinder apparatus. Meionite has very high thermal stability at high pressures, exceeding 1500° C at 20 kbar. Below 6 kbar and 1270 ° C scapolite breakdown is subsolidus, to an-orthite + gehlenite + wollastonite + CO2, with a slope of 20 bars/degree. An extrapolation of existing thermodynamic data for CO2 permits calculation of ΔG F o =-2384.5 kcal/mol for meionite at 1270 ° C, very close to the value for 3 anorthite + calcite. Above 1270 ° C, scapolite begins to melt to An+Geh+Liq+CO2, and as pressure increases the melting curve steepens, the Geh and An being progressively replaced by Liq+corundum with Al in 6-coordination. At pressures >25kbar dp/dt becomes negative, corundum is the only crystalline product, and CO2 bubbles disappear from the quenched glass, indicating a solubility of CO2 under these conditions of about 5 wt. percent in the liquid. The subsolidus breakdown of meionite at high pressures to grossularite + kyanite + quartz + calcite nearly coincides with the upper pressure limits of anorthite. Thus scapolite is essentially limited to crustal rocks. In view of its great thermal stability, meionite can play a role as a primary mineral in deep-seated basic or intermediate magmatic processes. It is also likely that CO2 coming from the earth's interior will be captured by reaction with plagioclase and clinopyroxene. Scapolite has been noted in basic granulite inclusions from basaltic pipes in three continents. It seems probable that scapolite acts as a major storage site for CO2 in the deep crust.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Periodisch gescharte Sandkörper auf den Sandwattflächen (große Rippeln und- hier besonders - Sandwellen) geben durch ihre im Luftbild erkennbare Asymmetrie Indizien für den Sandtransport. Diese Sandwellen sind, im Gegensatz zu Groß- und Riesenrippeln, aus einer Kreuzschichtung aufgebaut, die durch wandernde Kleinrippeln entstanden ist. Dadurch entsteht auch die Asymmetrie der Großformen. Die aus der Luftbildanalyse resultierende Richtungsverteilung stimmt mit einer Stromvektorenkarte (Göhren), die von normalen Tideverhältnissen abgeleitet ist, gut überein.Die Gesamtheit der auftretenden Strömungen spiegelt sich in der Schichtung nicht wider, sondern es dominiert diejenige Strömung, die am häufigsten mit einer relativ großen Geschwindigkeit eintritt. Extreme Bedingungen haben so geringere Chancen, im Sediment dokumentiert zu werden.
The asymmetric character of periodic sedimentary sand bodies found on tidal flats (largescale ripples and here particularly sand waves) can be mapped on aerial photographs to give an indication of sand transport directions. These sand waves, in contrast to largescale and giant ripples, exhibit cross-lamination which formed from migrating smallscale ripples. The asymmetry of the large form is established through the migration of the smallscale ripples. The vector distributions obtained from aerial photograph analyses show good agreement with a map of current vectors (Göhren) based on normal tidal conditions.Not every current is reflected in the sediment; dominant are the frequently occurring currents having a moderately high velocity. Extreme conditions (which are infrequent) have a smaller chance to be recorded in the sediment.

Résumé Dans la zone intertidale, on trouve des mégarides et d'autres crêtes sableuses, groupées periodiquement, qui sont appelées ici «Sandwellen» (vagues de sable). L'asymmetrie de ces formes, bien reconnaissable sur les photographies aériennes, donne des indications sur le mouvement du sable. Les vagues de sable montrent, au contraire des mégarides ordinaires, une stratification croisée de rides à l'intérieur. La migration de ces rides cause l'asymmetrie. La distribution des directions concorde avec une carte des vecteurs de courants (Göhren) dérivée des conditions ordinaires de marée.La totalité des courants présents dans la zone intertidale n'est pas réflétée dans la stratification, mais ce sont les courants, qui ont lieu le plus fréquemment avec des vélocités relativement fortes qui dominent. Les conditions extrêmes n'ont pas une grande chance d'être fossilisées.

A high-temperature solution calorimetric method suitable for thermochemical studies of anhydrous minerals containing Fe2+ ions has been developed. The method is based on an oxide melt solvent with 52 wt% LiBO2 and 48 wt% NaBO2 maintained at a temperature of 750°C. In a first application of this method the enthalpies of solution of synthetic almandine, fayalite, a mixture of fayalite plus quartz on FeSiO3 composition, and natural quartz were measured. For the reaction:
the enthalpy change at 1023 K is ?3.82 ± 0.87 kcal, based on fayalite, quartz, corundum and almandine, and ?5.96 ± 0.90 kcal based on the fayalite plus quartz mixture, corundum, and almandine. These values lead to standard molar enthalpies of formation of almandine from the oxides at 1023 K of ?14.10 ± 1.22 kcal and ?16.24 ± 1.74 kcal, respectively. The measured enthalpy of formation of almandine is less negative by several kilocalories than values derived from analysis of the phase equilibrium work of Hsu (1968), but in closer agreement with the phase equilibrium study of O'Neill and Wood (1979) and similar to the phase equilibrium deduction of Froese (1973).The agreement of the present almandine enthalpy of formation with O'Neill and Wood (1979) and Froese (1973) suggests that almandine entropies at 298 K to be obtained from their studies, in the range 79–81 cal/K, are more nearly correct than the several estimates based on oxide sum and volume-entropy systematics, most of which are much lower.  相似文献

In the past decade, there has been significant investment in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies that provide information to both en‐route and pre‐trip travelers. However, there is no definitive evidence that en‐route travelers actually use the information and alter their travel patterns. Previous research employed surveys that relied on motorists' written or spoken responses to questions involving travel information and hypothetical roadway scenarios. This research examines travel behavior on freeways equipped with ITS technologies in Connecticut using collected real‐time traffic count data from the diversionary roadways. Results find that more travel is occurring on the diversionary routes during periods of variable message sign (VMS) messages than during equivalent periods having no messages, indicating a motorist travel response to these messages.  相似文献

Geographic research on food quality, while considering many of the ways in which quality is socially constructed, has largely focused on the place-based aspects of the raw materials of food production. Here, we use French convention theory to look at a highly processed food in order to show how place associations in the social construction of food quality extend to manufacturing. For chocolate, quality is based on material characteristics whose relative importance in determining quality depends on the country in which different stages of economic innovation took place. Struggles over the definition of quality chocolate, as exemplified by the “European Chocolate War,” show how quality issues are connected to geographies of manufacturing and innovation.  相似文献

Projections of changes in climate extremes are critical to assessing the potential impacts of climate change on human and natural systems. Modeling advances now provide the opportunity of utilizing global general circulation models (GCMs) for projections of extreme temperature and precipitation indicators. We analyze historical and future simulations of ten such indicators as derived from an ensemble of 9 GCMs contributing to the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-AR4), under a range of emissions scenarios. Our focus is on the consensus from the GCM ensemble, in terms of direction and significance of the changes, at the global average and geographical scale. The climate extremes described by the ten indices range from heat-wave frequency to frost-day occurrence, from dry-spell length to heavy rainfall amounts. Historical trends generally agree with previous observational studies, providing a basic sense of reliability for the GCM simulations. Individual model projections for the 21st century across the three scenarios examined are in agreement in showing greater temperature extremes consistent with a warmer climate. For any specific temperature index, minor differences appear in the spatial distribution of the changes across models and across scenarios, while substantial differences appear in the relative magnitude of the trends under different emissions rates. Depictions of a wetter world and greater precipitation intensity emerge unequivocally in the global averages of most of the precipitation indices. However, consensus and significance are less strong when regional patterns are considered. This analysis provides a first overview of projected changes in climate extremes from the IPCC-AR4 model ensemble, and has significant implications with regard to climate projections for impact assessments.
