We report the results of a detailed study of dissolved Sr isotopes in the Solimões and Beni‐Madeira Rivers of the Amazon basin. This study developed data collected over 8 years indicating large spatial and temporal variations in dissolved Sr isotopes among the rivers of the Amazon basin. The large 87Sr/86Sr variations were found to be correlated with the geology of the source areas of the suspended sediments. The Beni‐Madeira River displays a high average 87Sr/86Sr ratio and large 87Sr/86Sr fluctuations during the hydrological cycle. This large average value and fluctuations were related to the presence of Precambrian rocks and Ordovician sediments in the source area of the suspended sediment of the river. In contrast, the Solimões River displays a narrow range of Sr isotope ratio variations and an average value close to 0.709. This river drains mostly Phanerozoic rocks of northern Peru and Ecuador that are characterized by low Sr isotope ratios. The isotopic fluctuations in the Beni‐Madeira River were observed to propagate downstream at least as far as Óbidos. This signal is characterized by an inverse relationship between the concentration of elemental Sr and its isotopic ratios. We further demonstrate that the Sr isotopic composition and content in the Beni‐Madeira River is controlled by suspended sediments derived from the Andes. Despite draining areas underlain by Precambrian rocks and having high 87Sr/86Sr ratios, such rivers as the Negro and Tapajós play a minor role in the total Sr budget of the Amazon basin. The behavior and dynamics of arsenic at Ilha do Mel, Guaraque?aba, and Paranaguá, located in the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex, Brazil, were investigated in this work. Samples were collected in March, September, and December of 2005. With respect to arsenic behavior, the total concentrations were higher for Paranaguá (22.5?±?2.5?μg?L?1) on average, followed by the samples of Guaraque?aba (14.4?±?3.2?μg?L?1) and Ilha do Mel (8.7?±?1.1?μg?L?1). The concentrations found in this work were consistently greater when compared to other estuaries. The results can be attributed to geological factors. Nevertheless, it was also possible to realize that higher concentrations were found in Paranaguá, the more impacted environment. These results represent a strong indication that human activities in the area contribute to the enrichment of the estuary with this metalloid. Arsenic was mainly present in the dissolved phase, which corresponded to more than 70% of the total concentration. This behavior can represent a greater residence time of this metalloid in the water column. The marine phytoplankton presence was decisive in dictating the distribution of As in the waters of Paranaguá estuary. Organic species, which are considered the less toxic, were found in higher concentrations in the eutrophic areas such as Guaraque?aba and Paranaguá. This was a typical behavior during the summer probably due to higher biological activity.  相似文献

The evaluation of potential environmental impacts from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon is a subject that requires investigation, especially related to emission sources from highway roads with high traffic. In this paper, the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was investigated in the surface sediments from a subtropical lake, located in the south of Brazil and away from urban areas. The results showed that all sediments presented such compounds in significant concentration, ranging from 9.50 to 29.88???g/g. The highest total concentration was found in those sites close to the highway (bridges) and the deepest area of the lake. Moreover, a high concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons of high molecular weight, such as benzo(a)anthracene and dibenzo(a,h)anthracene was found. It was laso found that high concentrations might be related to asphalt and coal tar pavement used in the highway construction close to the lake. In addition, the potential capacity of sediment toxicity was compared with values of the interim sediment quality guidelines values. The results indicate that most of the sediment presents concentrations of hydrocarbons above these limits. Only fluoranthene and chrysene were found in concentrations below the guideline values. The concentrations of most of the polycyclic hydrocarbons are higher than the quality guidelines. However, the main concern is associated with the presence of benzo(a)anthracene whose concentration is 416 times higher than the limit establisehed by guidelines. The same observation can be done to traces of benzo(a)pyrene and dibenz(a,h)anthracene, with concentration values of 13 and 1,993 times higher.  相似文献

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) use has been restricted or forbidden in Argentina since 1998 and technical endosulfan is the last currently used OCPs on the soybean-wheat production. As they persist in soil for several years after application, OCPs constitute a source of environmental pollution. This work aims to assess OCPs contamination of groundwater (Gw) and streamwater (Sw) in the Quequén Grande River watershed from south Argentinean Pampas in relation to the hydrogeological characteristics. OCPs were analyzed in Sw, Gw, surface bottom sediments, soils and borehole cutting sediments (Cs) by gas chromatograph-electron capture detector. Pesticide distribution in Cs was dependent on the characteristic of the non-saturated zone. Leached pesticides over 3 m in Cs showed the pattern: HCHs = endosulfan > chlordanes > DDTs, and from 3 to 6 m heptachlor was the main group as a consequence of the past use of this compound in the area, mainly on potato crops. Endosulfan reaches Gw during application season as well as during flooding events while a retard effect was observed for Sw. Levels of α- and β-isomers were in certain cases above national (7 ng L−1) and international (3 ng L−1) limits for aquatic biota protection. As the endosulfan sulfate metabolite was present in Gw and Sw and due to its high toxicity, it should be considered in the establishment of water quality criteria for human and environmental protection.  相似文献

The effect of crab beds and bioturbation activity of the SW Atlantic intertidal crab Chasmagnathus granulata on the organochlorine pesticide (OCP) concentrations in Bahía Blanca estuary, Argentina were studied. Total OCP concentration was significantly lower inside than outside the crab burrows. Nevertheless, the concentrations from outside the crab beds were lower than from outside crab burrows, which indicated that crab beds act as sinks of sediment-bound OCP due to the bioturbation activities of the crabs. The same distribution patterns were found in all sediments as well as in crabs, being cyclodienes>HCHs>DDTs, although large amounts of metabolites rather than the respective parental were found in the organism showing the capacity of C. granulata for metabolising parental compounds. These more water-soluble compounds are excreted by the faeces and finally removed by tidal flushing to the sea. Our results suggest that crabs when present play a role in the distribution of sediment-bound OCP and the crab beds are modifiers of the dynamic of organic pollutants in estuarine areas.  相似文献

A long-term flood record from the Buffels River, the largest ephemeral river of NW South Africa (9250 km2), was reconstructed based on interpretation of palaeoflood, documentary and instrumental rainfall data. Palaeoflood data were obtained at three study reaches, with preserved sedimentary evidence indicating at least 25 large floods during the last 700 yr. Geochronological control for the palaeoflood record was provided by radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating. Annual resolution was obtained since the 19th century using the overlapping documentary and instrumental records. Large floods coincided in the past within three main hydroclimatic settings: (1) periods of regular large flood occurrence (1 large flood/~30 yr) under wetter and cooler prevailing climatic conditions (AD 1600–1800), (2) decreasing occurrence of large floods (1 large flood/~100 yr) during warmer conditions (e.g., AD 1425–1600 and after 1925), and (3) periods of high frequency of large floods (~ 4–5 large floods in 20–30 yr) coinciding with wetter conditions of decadal duration, namely at AD 1390–1425, 1800–1825 and 1915–1925. These decadal-scale periods of the highest flood frequency seem to correspond in time with changes in atmospheric circulation patterns, as inferred when comparing their onset and distribution with temperature proxies in southern Africa.  相似文献

Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) are non-breeding winter visitors to the Brazilian coast. In 2008 and 2010, plastic items and other marine debris were found in the stomachs and intestines of 15% of 175 dead penguins collected in the Lagos Region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. One bird had its stomach perforated by a plastic straw, which may have caused its death. There are few records of penguins ingesting plastic litter, but previous studies have found similar levels of debris ingestion among Magellanic penguins stranded on the Brazilian coast (35.8% of 397 birds). The high incidence of marine debris in this species in Brazil may result at least in part from the predominance of juveniles reaching these waters, as juvenile penguins may have a broader diet than adults. It is unclear to what extent plastic ingestion affects the mortality rate in this species and whether the incidence in stranded birds reflects that in the entire population. The present study addresses the increasing impact of plastic debris on marine life.  相似文献

Oceanographic climatology is normally estimated by dividing the world’s oceans into geographical boxes of fixed shape and size, where each box is represented by a climatological salinity and temperature profile. The climatological profile is typically an average of historical measurements from that region. Since an arbitrarily chosen box may contain different types of water masses both in space and time, an averaged profile may be a statistically improbable or even non-physical representation. This paper proposes a new approach that employs empirical orthogonal functions in combination with a clustering technique to divide the world’s oceans into climatological regions. Each region is represented by a cluster that is determined by minimising the variance of the state variables within each cluster. All profiles contained in a cluster are statistically similar to each other and statistically different from profiles in other clusters. Each cluster is then represented by mean temperature and salinity profiles and a mean position. Methods for estimating climatological profiles from the cluster information are examined, and their performances are compared to a conventional method of estimating climatology. The comparisons show that the new methods outperform conventional methods and are particularly effective in areas where oceanographic fronts are present.  相似文献
