On August 19–20, 1969, the heavy rainfall associated with hurricane Camille triggered numerous debris avalanches in the Blue Ridge Province of central Virginia. Most slope movements occurred in Nelson County in an area that is predominantly underlain by Precambrian granites, gneisses, and schists. This study was undertaken to determine which geotechnical properties of soil and rock were important in promoting debris avalanche activity in central Virginia.

Twenty-one first-order drainage basins in Nelson County were randomly selected and classified as unstable based on their values of horizontal curvature and average gradient as measured on topographic maps. Slope orientation, total soil thickness, and soil horizon thicknesses were measured in the field. Soils from the study basins were tested for geotechnical properties including natural water content, grain-size distribution, Atterberg limits,in situ dry density, and shear strength. These geomorphic and geotechnical properties were subsequently analyzed to ascertain what significant differences existed at the 99% confidence level between three failure classes of unstable basins. Where rock outcrops were present, information regarding discontinuity type, orientation, spacing, continuity, roughness, waviness, aperture, and water quantity was obtained. Values of hand sample hardness were also procured. The role of these bedrock characteristics in determining unstable basin failure class was statistically analyzed at the 95% confidence level.

In general, the results indicate that basins classified as geomorphically unstable are particularly susceptible to debris avalanche activity if they contain coarse-grained soils with low values of plasticity index and moisture content. Geotechnical properties are also found to be significantly different when analyzed with respect to the underlying bedrock unit, which helps explain why basins underlain by certain bedrock units failed more often than basins underlain by other bedrock units. Differences in topography, due to the nature of the underlying bedrock unit, also explain the frequency of debris avalanche occurrences in a given bedrock unit. Characteristics of bedrock discontinuities do not appear to have influenced drainage basin failure.  相似文献

An atmospheric general circulation model, the NCAR CCM, has been used to investigate the possible effects that reduced Gulf of Mexico sea surface temperatures (SST) could have on regional and hemispheric climates. 18O records and terrestrial evidence indicate at least two major glacial meltwater discharges into the Gulf of Mexico subsequent to the last glacial maximum. It is probable that these discharges reduced Gulf of Mexico SST. We have conducted three numerical experiments, with imposed gulf-wide SST coolings of 3°C, 6°C, and 12°C, and find in all three experiments significant reductions in the North Atlantic storm-track intensity, along with a strong decrease in transient eddy water vapor transport out of the Gulf of Mexico. Surface pressures are higher over the North Atlantic, indicating a reduction of the climatological Icelandic low. The region is generally cooler and drier, with a reduction in precipitation that agrees well with evidence from Greenland ice cores. Other statistically significant changes occur across the Northern Hemisphere, but vary between the three experiments. In particular, warmer, wetter conditions are found over Europe for both the 6°C and 12°C SST reductions, but cooler conditions are found for the 3°C reduction. This indicates a dependence, in both the sign and magnitude of the model response, on the magnitude of the imposed SST anomaly. The results suggest that the present-day North Atlantic storm track is dependent on warm Gulf of Mexico SST for much of its intensity. They also suggest that meltwater-induced coolings may help account, in part, for some of the climatic oscillations that occurred during the last glacial/interglacial transition.  相似文献

We described seasonal fish-assemblages in an estuarine marsh fringing Matagorda Bay, Gulf of Mexico. Habitat zones were identified by patterns of fish species abundance and indicator species optima along gradients in salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), and depth in our samples. Indicators of the lower brackish zone (lower lake and tidal bayou closest to the bay) were gulf menhaden (Brevoortia patronus), bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli), silver perch (Bairdiella chrysoura), and spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) at salinity >15‰, DO 7–10 mg l−1, and depth <0.5 m. Indicators of the upper brackish zone (lake and fringing salt marsh) were pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides) and spot (Leiostomus xanthurus) at salinity 10–20‰, DO >10 mg l−1, and depth <0.5 m. In the freshwater wetland zone (diked wetland, ephemeral pool, and perennial scour pool), indicators were sheepshed minnow (Cyprinod on variegatus), rainwater killifish (Lucania parva), mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), and sailfin molly (Poecilia latipinna) at salinity <5‰, DO <5 mg l−1, and depth ≥1 m. In the freshwater channelized zone (slough and irrigation canal), indicators were three sunfish species (Lepomis), white crappie (Pomoxis annularis), and gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) at salinity <5‰, DO <5 mg l−1, and depth >1.5 m. In brackish zones, seasonal variation in species diversity among sites was positively correlated with temperature, but assemblage structure also was influenced by depth and DO. In the freshwater zones, seasonal variation in species diversity among sites was positively correlated with depth, DO, and salinity, but assemblage structure was weakly associated with temperature. Species diversity and assemblage structure were strongly affected by the connectivity between freshwater wetland and brackish zones. Uncommon species in diked wetlands, such as tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) and fat sleeper (Dormitator maculatus), indicated movement of fishes from the brackish zone as the water level rose during natural flooding and scheduled (July) releases from the diked wetland. From September to July, diversity in the freshwater wetland zone decreased as receding waters left small isolated pools, and fish movement became blocked by a water-control structure. Subsequently, diversity was reduced to a few species with opportunistic life histories and tolerance to anoxic conditions that developed as flooded vegetation decayed.  相似文献

Three ferromanganese nodules handpicked from the tops of 2500 cm2 area box cores taken from the north equatorial Pacific have been analysed for their U-Th series nuclides.230Thexc concentrations in the surface 1–2 mm of the top side of the nodules indicate growth rates of 1.8–4.6 mm/106 yr. In two of the nodules a significant discontinuity in the230Thexc depth profile has been observed at ~0.3 m.y. ago, suggesting that the nodule growth has been episodic. The concentration profiles of231Paexc (measured via227Th) yield growth rates similar to the230Thexc data. The bottom sides of the nodules display exponential decrease of230Thexc/232Th activity ratio with depth, yielding growth rates of 1.5–3.3 mm/106 yr.The230Thexc and231Paexc concentrations in the outermost layer of the bottom face are significantly lower than in the outermost layer of the top face. Comparison of the extrapolated230Thexc/232Th and230Thexc/231Paexc activity ratios for the top and bottom surfaces yields an “age” of (5?15) × 104 yr for the bottom relative to the top. This “age” most probably represents the time elapsed since the nodules have attained the present orientation.The210Pb concentration in the surface ~0.1 mm of the top side is in large excess over its parent226Ra. Elsewhere in the nodule, up to ~1 mm depth in both top and bottom sides,210Pb is deficient relative to226Ra, probably due to222Rn loss. The absence of210Pbexc below the outermost layer of the top face rules out the possibility of a sampling artifact as the cause of the observed exponentially decreasing230Thexc and231Paexc concentration profiles. The flux of210Pbexc to the nodules ranges between 0.31 and 0.58 dpm/cm2 yr. The exhalation rate of222Rn, estimated from the226Ra-210Pb disequilibrium is ~570 dpm/cm2 yr from the top side and >2000 dpm/cm2 yr from the bottom side.226Ra is deficient in the top side relative to230Th up to ~0.5–1 mm and is in large excess throughout the bottom. The data indicate a net gain of226Ra into the nodule, corresponding to a flux of (24?46) × 10?3 dpm/cm2 yr. On a total area basis the gain of226Ra into the nodules is <20% of the226Ra escaping from the sediments. A similar gain of228Ra into the bottom side of the nodules is reflected by the high228Th/232Th activity ratios observed in the outermost layer in contact with sediments.  相似文献

The flux of226Ra from bottom sediments has been determined from patterns of226Ra/230Th disequilibrium in ten deep-sea cores from the world oceans. Values range from ? 0.0015 dpm/cm2 yr (in the Atlantic) to 0.21 dpm/cm2 yr (in the north equatorial Pacific). The flux is poorly related to sediment type, but is inversely correlated in a non-linear fashion with sediment accumulation rate. There is a direct relationship between the production rate of226Ra near the sediment-water interface (i.e. the integrated230Th activity in the biologically mixed zone) and the226Ra flux. The226Ra concentration in near-bottom water follows the geographic variation in the226Ra flux. The high flux from north equatorial Pacific sediments especially is reflected in the high bottom water226Ra concentrations in that area. The data suggest that both rate of circulation and the magnitude of the radium flux influence the near-bottom226Ra concentration.  相似文献

Conclusions This study concludes that a relatively small part of the Third World's increasing populations may be absorbed in their frontiers. Throuh the 49 locations are scattered throughout that world three characteristics are emphasized: 1) these are the principal regions where studies of population absorption potential should be initiated before any new settling is undertaken, 2) the frontiers are not as convenient to areas of world population pressure as is desirable, and 3) what are mapped as areas may turn out to be a series of spots requiring considerable detailed planning at local levels.Overall there is reason for some encouragement. Frontiering could be executed now with degrees of success if proper respect is paid the complexity of the task and to previous experience. It is suggested that a contemporary planner of new settling is wiser to elect areas where the process may build on an existing minimal geographic base of settlers and transportation so as to start relatively quickly and be at least partly commercial. Frontiers these days are unlikely to take as long to develop as they did 25 or 50 years ago. Nor should they. Moreover, the drive to raise world standards of living is calling for a new order of economies and one corollary is apparent: frontiers for subsistence living have minimal value now and in the future and should be short-lived, if existent at all. But, most important, the frontiers provide the possibility of meeting a part of a burgeoning problem in a way that is familiar to the people and that could be efficient.  相似文献

Residual waste is expected to be left in 177 underground storage tanks after closure at the US Department of Energy’s Hanford Site in Washington State, USA. In the long term, the residual wastes may represent a potential source of contamination to the subsurface environment. Residual materials that cannot be completely removed during the tank closure process are being studied to identify and characterize the solid phases and estimate the release of contaminants from these solids to water that might enter the closed tanks in the future. As of the end of 2009, residual waste from five tanks has been evaluated. Residual wastes from adjacent tanks C-202 and C-203 have high U concentrations of 24 and 59 wt.%, respectively, while residual wastes from nearby tanks C-103 and C-106 have low U concentrations of 0.4 and 0.03 wt.%, respectively. Aluminum concentrations are high (8.2–29.1 wt.%) in some tanks (C-103, C-106, and S-112) and relatively low (<1.5 wt.%) in other tanks (C-202 and C-203). Gibbsite is a common mineral in tanks with high Al concentrations, while non-crystalline U–Na–C–O–P ± H phases are common in the U-rich residual wastes from tanks C-202 and C-203. Iron oxides/hydroxides have been identified in all residual waste samples studied to date. Contaminant release from the residual wastes was studied by conducting batch leach tests using distilled deionized water, a Ca(OH)2-saturated solution, or a CaCO3-saturated water. Uranium release concentrations are highly dependent on waste and leachant compositions with dissolved U concentrations one or two orders of magnitude higher in the tests with high U residual wastes, and also higher when leached with the CaCO3-saturated solution than with the Ca(OH)2-saturated solution. Technetium leachability is not as strongly dependent on the concentration of Tc in the waste, and it appears to be slightly more leachable by the Ca(OH)2-saturated solution than by the CaCO3-saturated solution. In general, Tc is much less leachable (<10 wt.% of the available mass in the waste) than previously predicted. This may be due to the coprecipitation of trace concentrations of Tc in relatively insoluble phases such as Fe oxide/hydroxide solids.  相似文献
