We use modern and novel techniques to study the problems associated with detection and analysis of multitudinous seismic events, which form the background for isolated great earthquakes. This new approach involves multivariate analysis of low and large magnitude events recorded in space over a couple of centuries in time. We propose here the deployment of the clustering scheme both for extracting small local structures and large-scale trends in synthetic data obtained from four numerically simulated models with: uniform properties (U), a Parkfield-type asperity (A), fractal brittle properties (F), and multi-size-heterogeneity fault zone (M). The mutual nearest neighbor (mnn) clustering scheme allows for extraction of multi-resolutional seismic anomalies in both the spatio-temporal and multi-dimensional feature space. We demonstrate that the large earthquakes are correlated with a certain pathway of smaller events. Visualization of the anomalies by using a recently introduced visualization package Amira reveals clearly the spatio-temporal relationships between clusters of small, medium and large earthquakes, indicating significant stress relaxation across the entire fault region. We demonstrate that this mnn scheme can extract distinct clusters of the smallest events, which precede and follow a singularly large magnitude earthquake. These clusters form larger spatio-temporal structures comprising a series of large earthquakes. The link between the large and medium magnitude events is not so clearly understood. Short-ranged correlations are dominated by strong spatio-temporal anomalies, thus reflecting the global seismic properties of the entire fault zone.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article if you access the article at . Analysis of a group of seismic events which took place in central Italy and have been recorded at the l’Aquila Observatory
reveals proportionality between the maximum seismic signal (the displacement velocity) and the maximum amplitudes of rotational
components. To compare the seismic events in the aspect of energy emitted as rotational motions, the rotation indices are
used; these indices help us also to differentiate between the results obtained for different frequency spectra.
In the adopted higher frequency range, 2.6–43 Hz, the relation between maximum displacement velocities and the rotation indices
is roughly reciprocal, while for the lower frequencies, 0.3–3 Hz, there is no clear relationship.
The share of rotation motions in the whole seismic energy emitted from the source varies during the seismic event. Research

We discuss the long-run distributions of several characteristics for the apparent waves in a Gaussian sea. Three types of one-dimensional wave records are considered: 1) the seaway in time at a fixed position; 2) the instantaneous profile along a horizontal line; 3) the encountered seaway. Exact integral forms of the joint long run distributions are derived for the apparent periods, lengths, and heights. Results of numerical approximations of these distributions are presented in examples. For the computations we considered, as the input spectra, empirical estimates of the frequency spectra as well as JONSWAP type spectra. Effective algorithms are discussed and utilized in the form of a comprehensive computer package of numerical routines. 相似文献

Ontology‐based information publishing, retrieval, reuse, and integration have become popular research topics to address the challenges involved in exchanging data between heterogeneous sources. However, in most cases ontologies are still developed in a centralized top‐down manner by a few knowledge engineers. Consequently, the role that developers play in conceptualizing a domain such as the geosciences is disproportional compared with the role of domain experts and especially potential end‐users. These and other drawbacks have stimulated the creation of new methodologies focusing around collaboration. Based on a review of existing approaches, this article presents a two‐step methodology and implementation to foster collaborative ontology engineering in the geosciences. Our approach consists of the development of a minimalistic core ontology acting as a catalyst and the creation of a virtual collaborative development cycle. Both methodology and prototypical implementation have been tested in the context of the EU‐funded ForeStClim project which addresses environmental protection with respect to forests and climate change. 相似文献

We aim to numerically study evolution of Alfv′en waves that accompany short-lasting swirl events in a solar magnetic flux-tube that can be a simple model of a magnetic pore or a sunspot. With the use of the FLASH code we numerically solve three-dimensional ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations to simulate twists which are implemented at the top of the photosphere in magnetic field lines of the flux-tube. Our numerical results exhibit swirl events and Alfv′en waves with associated clockwise and counterclockwise rotation of magnetic lines, with the largest values of vorticity at the bottom of the chromosphere, and a certain amount of energy flux. 相似文献

Lithofacies analysis of two transgressive sequences within the Kapp Starostin Formation (Upper Permian, West Spitsbergen), indicates considerable differences in seawater chemistry between their depositional environments. The onshore part of the sequence represented in the Vøringen and Svenskeegga Members is largely calcareous, with allochthonous and corroded siliceous materials. In contrast, in the equivalent sequence within the Hovtinden Member, silica is ubiquitous whereas carbonate materials include mainly corroded bioclasts. These differences are consistent with predictions of the oceanographic model of ‘overfed’ and ‘hungry’ oceans proposed previously on the basis of carbon and oxygen stable isotope analysis. 相似文献

Mixed integer–real least squares (MIRLS) estimation still has two open scientific problems, i.e., the validation of results and computational efficiency for a large number of satellites. This paper presents and discusses a non-conventional approach to MIRLS estimation, which belongs to the ambiguity function method (AFM) class. Because the solution is searched for in the constant three-dimensional coordinate domain instead of the n-dimensional ambiguity domain, the computational efficiency does not depend as much on the number of satellites as it does in conventional MIRLS estimation. Simple numerical pretests have shown that the reliability and precision of results from the presented approach and the conventional MIRLS estimation are exactly the same. Hence, the presented approach, contrary to AFM, may be treated as MIRLS estimation. Furthermore, the presented approach is a few hundred times faster than AFM and may be considered in (near) real-time GNSS positioning. In light of the above, the new field of research on MIRLS estimation may be opened. 相似文献

Samples of Toarcian argillite were collected both next to and far from a CEM II cement paste and a CEM II concrete, within the specific context of a 15-a old borehole located in the Tournemire Experimental Platform (Aveyron, France). The objectives were evaluation of the mineralogical and geochemical changes of the claystone at the contact with the cementitious materials and determination of the spatial extent of the interactions. The approach includes the examination of the mineralogical (XRD, SEM, TEM), chemical (major, trace, rare earth elements) and isotopic (Sr, C, O) compositions of argillite whole-rocks and of various soluble phases, at two scales: in the rock matrix (P1 scale) and along micro-cracks (P2 scale). The two study scales outline nearly similar mineralogical modifications, shown by the presence of Ca silicate hydrates (C–S–H) and newly-formed CaCO3 within 10–15 mm of the cement paste and concrete. Chemical data from whole-rock argillites indicate few changes in a slightly thicker zone (18–20 mm), mainly consisting of an increase in the CaO wt.%, and a decrease in Sr contents. The other elementary contents remained quite constant except for MgO, which suggests redistribution with precipitation of a Mg-rich mineral phase at 20 mm from cement paste/concrete interface. Acetic acid leachates had more pronounced variations, including a decrease of the total elementary content in the same ‘geochemical disturbed zone’ (GDZ), together with a significant increase of the Sr isotopic ratios. A combination of Sr and C/O isotopic patterns was used to distinguish the behavior of secondary cementitious phases in the clay-rich rock: (i) calcite dissolution and re-precipitation is supported by C/O isotopic data and (ii) C–S–H neoformation is evidenced by the 87Sr/86Sr ratios; this tool also contributes to determine the origin of the fluids. The proportion of newly-formed C–S–H in the matrix and in the micro-cracks of the argillite is modeled. 相似文献

This paper presents the results of the studies of aerosol optical properties measured using lidars and sun photometers. We describe two case studies of the combined measurements made in two coastal zones in Crete in 2006 and in Rozewie on the Baltic Sea in 2009. The combination of lidar and sun photometer measurements provides comprehensive information on both the total aerosol optical thickness in the entire atmosphere as well as the vertical structure of aerosol optical properties. Combination of such information with air mass back-trajectories and data collected at stations located on the route of air masses provides complete picture of the aerosol variations in the study area both vertically and horizontally. We show that such combined studies are especially important in the coastal areas where depending on air mass advection directions and altitudes the influence of fine or coarse mode (in this case possibly sea-salt) particles on the vertical structure of aerosol optical properties is an important issue to consider. 相似文献
