Pennsylvanian strata of the Hazard coalfield, Eastern Kentucky, contain fluvial, upper-delta plain facies characterized by thick localized coals, bay-fill shales, levee silt- and sandstones, and channel-fill sands and gravels. Although the deltaic nature of these sediments has long been established, mining and exploration activities in the district require a thorough understanding of small areas within the delta environment. Coal quantity and quality trends in the Hazard #7 seam, the major producer in the area, have been examined in detail.The #7 coal accumulated in a peat swamp restricted laterally by a major fluvial channel. Three types of non-coal parting are recognized. Thin, tabular, fine-grained partings resulted from periods of increased terrigenous influx into the swamp. Lenticular crevasse-splay deposits locally split the coal. Wedge-shaped, fine- to coarse-grained partings, of probable levee origin, are found along the channel margin. Post-swamp deposits consist of thick bay-fill shales, thin shales, silt- and sandstones deposited on floodplains, and channel-fill sandstones and gravels.The modeling technique discussed provides guidance for mine development and regional exploration by prediction of coal seam quantity and quality trends from local geologic features. The thickest #7 coal is split by thin tabular partings and is overlain by thick shale sequences. Coal overlain by silt and sandstone is thinner and unsplit, and typically of higher heat value. Regional seam thinning due to channel scour is recognized. Factors which control the configuration of the coal seam include position within the peat swamp, proximity to the fluvial channel, swamp burial processes, and paleochannel sinuosity.  相似文献

A suite of Australian shales, greywackes and subgreywackes ranging in age from Proterozoic to Triassic were analyzed for the rare earth elements (REE) in order to detect any secular changes in rare earth distribution. These post-Archean sediments show remarkably similar relative rare earth patterns. They are characterized by negative Eu anomalies of almost constant magnitude (average Eu/Eu* = 0.67 ± 0.05) relative to chondrites and nearly constant ratios of light to heavy rare earths (average ∑LREE/∑HREE = 9.7 ± 1.8).

The REE abundances are generally higher in the younger sediments which may suggest that the absolute abundances of the rare earths in clastic sediments have gradually increased with time. Since no secular change in relative rare earth distribution was detected in the post-Archean sediments, a uniform process of crustal growth and evolution seems to have operated over the past 1500 million years at least.

Australites show rare earth distributions very similar to that of the average clastic sediment. This suggests that the tektite parent material originated in the upper crust.  相似文献

Analytical data for Sr, Rb, Cs, Ba, Pb, rare earth elements, Y, Th, U, Zr, Hf, Sn, Nb, Mo, Ni, Co, V, Cr, Sc, Cu and major elements are reported for eocene volcanic rocks cropping out in the Kastamonu area, Pontic chain of Northern Turkey. SiO2% versus K2O% relationship shows that the analyzed samples belong to two major groups: the basaltic andesitic and the andesitic ones. High-K basaltic andesites and low-K andesites occur too. Although emplaced on continental type basement (the North Anatolian Crystalline Swell), the Pontic eocene volcanics show elemental abundances closely comparable with typical island arc calc-alkaline suites, e.g. low SiO2% range, low to moderate K2O% and large cations (Cs, Rb, Sr, Ba, Pb) contents and REE patterns with fractionated light and almost flat heavy REE patterns. REE and highly charged cations (Th, U, Hf, Sn, Zr) are slightly higher than typical calc-alkaline values. Ferromagnesian elements show variable values. Within the basaltic andesite group the increase of K%, large cations, REE, La/Yb ratio and high valency cations and the decrease of ferromagnesian element abundances with increasing SiO2% content indicate that the rock types making up this group developed by crystalliquid fractionation of olivine and clinopyroxene from a basic parent magma. Trace element concentration suggest that the andesite group was not derived by crystal-liquid fractionation processes from the basaltic andesites, but could represent a distinct group of rocks derived from a different parent magma.  相似文献

Deep and surface magnetic measurements, gravity and subbottom seismic profiling data have been gathered across a part of the northwest Atlantic smooth-rough magnetic border. These data indicate that the transition involves only a change in the magnetic field, without associated gravity or subbottom topographic signature. Model studies suggest that a change in basement magnetization from 0.010 emu/cm3 to 0.005 emu/cm3 could account for the magnetic field change across the boundary from the rough to the smooth sectors. Various theories previously proposed to explain this magnetic boundary are discussed with respect to these newer data; reduction of basement magnetization by weathering of the proto-Atlantic Ocean floor as described by Drake et al. (1968) is the preferred explanation.  相似文献

A new family of unconditionally stable one-step methods for the direct integration of the equations of structural dynamics is introduced and is shown to possess improved algorithmic damping properties which can be continuously controlled. We propose that the europium excess in Precambrian sedimentary rocks, relative to those of younger age is derived from volcanic rocks of ancient island arcs, which were the source materials for the sediments. Precambrian sedimentary rocks and present-day volcanic rocks of island arcs have similar REE patterns, total REE abundances and excess Eu, relative to the North American shale composite. The present upper crustal REE pattern, as exemplified by that of sediments, is depleted in Eu, relative to chondrites. This depletion is considered to be a consequence of development of a grandioritic upper crust by partial melting in the lower crust, which selectively retains europium.  相似文献
