Abstract The PALANQUIN experiment was a 4.3 kiloton nuclear explosion detonated at a depth of 280 feet (85.3 m) in layered trachytic volcanic rocks at the Nevada Test Site. The resulting apparent crater had an unusual conical shape and dimensions of 119.1 feet (36.3 m) radius, and 78.8 feet (24.0 m) depth. The volcanic history of Santo Antão, NW Cape Verde Islands,includes the eruption of basanite–phonolite series magmasbetween 7·5 and 0·3 Ma and (melilite) nephelinite–phonoliteseries magmas from 0·7 to 0·1 Ma. The most primitivevolcanic rocks are olivine ± clinopyroxene-phyric, whereasthe more evolved rocks have phenocrysts of clinopyroxene ±Fe–Tioxide ± kaersutite ± haüyne ± titanite± sanidine; plagioclase occurs in some intermediate rocks.The analysed samples span a range of 19–0·03% MgO;the most primitive have 37–46% SiO2, 2·5–7%TiO2 and are enriched 50–200 x primitive mantle in highlyincompatible elements; the basanitic series is less enrichedthan the nephelinitic series. Geochemical trends in each seriescan be modelled by fractional crystallization of phenocrystassemblages from basanitic and nephelinitic parental magmas.There is little evidence for mineral–melt disequilibrium,and thus magma mixing is not of major importance in controllingbulk-rock compositions. Mantle melting processes are modelledusing fractionation-corrected magma compositions; the modelssuggest 1–4% partial melting of a heterogeneous mantleperidotite source at depths of 90–125 km. Incompatibleelement enrichment among the most primitive magma types is typicalof HIMU OIB. The Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic compositions of theSanto Antão volcanic sequence and geochemical characterchange systematically with time. The older volcanic rocks (7·5–2Ma) vary between two main mantle source components, one of whichis a young HIMU type with 206Pb/204Pb = 19·88, 7/4 =–5, 8/4 0, 87Sr/86Sr = 0·7033 and 143Nd/144Nd= 0·51288, whereas the other has somewhat less radiogenicSr and Pb and more radiogenic Nd. The intermediate age volcanicrocks (2–0·3 Ma) show a change of sources to two-componentmixing between a carbonatite-related young HIMU-type source(206Pb/204Pb = 19·93, 7/4 = –5, 8/4 = –38,87Sr/86Sr = 0·70304) and a DM-like source. A more incompatibleelement-enriched component with 7/4 > 0 (old HIMU type) isprominent in the young volcanic rocks (0·3–0·1Ma). The EM1 component that is important in the southern CapeVerde Islands appears to have played no role in the petrogenesisof the Santo Antão magmas. The primary magmas are arguedto be derived by partial melting in the Cape Verde mantle plume;temporal changes in composition are suggested to reflect layeringin the plume conduit. Mineral composition and quantitative thermobarometric studies indicate that the Teslin-Taylor Mountain and Nisutlin terranes within the Teslin suture zone (TSZ), Yukon, record widespread high-P/T metamorphic conditions consistent with subduction zone dynamothermal metamorphism. The highest P–T conditions (575–750° C and 9–17 kbar) are preserved in tectonites formed during normal dip-slip ductile shear. Dextral strike-slip tectonites record lower P–T conditions (400–550° C and 5–8 kbar), and tectonites which show reverse shear have peak temperatures of c. 420° C and a minimum peak pressure of 3 kbar. Dynamothermal metamorphism took place in a west-dipping B-type subduction zone outboard of western North America in Permo-Triassic time. TSZ tectonites were underplated against the hangingwall plate of the subduction zone. Following subduction of the ocean basin which separated North America from the hangingwall plate, TSZ tectonites were overthrust eastward as a coherent structural package as a result of A-type subduction of Cassiar strata in early Jurassic time. (Par)autochthonous Cassiar tectonites, which comprised the leading edge of the western North American margin, record prograde moderate-P, high-T metamorphism (550–750° C and 7–13 kbar) synchronous with top-to-the-east ductile shear. Metamorphism occurred as a result of subduction of the North American margin into the TSZ subduction zone in early Jurassic time. Following metamorphism Cassiar tectonites cooled slowly from 500 to 300° C during the period middle Jurassic to middle Cretaceous. TSZ and Cassiar tectonites were deformed during changing P–T conditions. Data from each of these tectonite packages indicate that grain-scale strain partitioning may have allowed local recrystallization of individual minerals by the addition of mechanical energy. The composition of the new grains reflects the P–T conditions under which that particular grain was deformed.  相似文献

We present elemental and isotopic (Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf–Os–He)data on primitive alkalic lavas from the Prinsen af Wales Bjerge,East Greenland. Stratigraphical, compositional and 40Ar–39Ardata indicate that this inland alkalic activity was contemporaneouswith the upper parts of the main tholeiitic plateau basaltsand also post-dated them. The alkalic rocks show a marked crustalinfluence, indicating establishment of new magmatic plumbingsystems distinct from the long-lived coastal systems that fedthe relatively uncontaminated plateau basalts. Oxide–sulphide–Fe–Mg–silicate and titanite–ilmenite textures as well as their mineral compositions have been studied in felsic and intermediate orthogneisses across an amphibolite (north) to granulite facies (south) traverse of lower Archean crust, Tamil Nadu, south India. Titanite is limited to the amphibolite facies terrane where it rims ilmenite or occurs as independent grains. Pyrite is widespread throughout the traverse increasing in abundance with increasing metamorphic grade. Pyrrhotite is confined to the high‐grade granulites. Ilmenite is widespread throughout the traverse increasing in abundance with increasing metamorphic grade and occurring primarily as hemo‐ilmenite in the high‐grade granulite facies rocks. Magnetite is widespread throughout the traverse and is commonly associated with ilmenite. It decreases in abundance with increasing metamorphic grade. In the granulite facies zone, reaction rims of magnetite + quartz occur along Fe–Mg silicate grain boundaries. Magnetite also commonly rims or is associated with pyrite. Both types of reaction rims represent an oxidation effect resulting from the partial subsolidus reduction of the hematite component in ilmenite to magnetite. This is confirmed by the presence of composite three oxide grains consisting of hematite, magnetite and ilmenite. Magnetite and magnetite–pyrite micro‐veins along silicate grain boundaries formed over a wide range of post‐peak metamorphic temperatures and pressures ranging from high‐grade SO2 to low‐grade H2S‐dominated conditions. Oxygen fugacities estimated from the orthopyroxene–magnetite–quartz, orthopyroxene–hematite–quartz, and magnetite–hematite buffers average 2.5 log units above QFM. It is proposed that the trends in mineral assemblages, textures and composition are the result of an external, infiltrating concentrated brine containing an oxidizing component such as CaSO4 during high‐grade metamorphism later acted upon by prograde and retrograde mineral reactions that do not involve an externally derived fluid phase.  相似文献

At Kap Herschell, in the outer fjord zone of central northeast Greenland, exposed sections in a Late Pleistocene ice-cored moraine revealed four major stratigraphic units deposited during the complex Kap Herschell Stade . All contain fragmented and redeposited marine shells that most likely belong to an Eemian or Early Weichselian marine episode. The oldest unit consists of buried ground ice with folded and sheared debris bands. Isotopic analyses show that the slope of the regression line for δ2H vs. δ18O of the ice is about 8.5. which suggests correlation with the Global Meteoric Water Line (GMWL). Data strongly suggest that the ground ice at Kap Herschell is a remnant of a Late Pleistocene glacier. It was probably generated at low altitudes (< 1000 m) in the inner fjord region or in the nunatak zone. The ground ice is unconformably overlain by all younger stratigraphic units, the oldest of which is a diamicton probably deposited as ablation till from the ice. A complex unit composed of mainly glaciolacustrine deposits and subordinate beds of fluvial and deltaic origin overlies the till and ground ice. Luminescence dating of the lacustrine sediments indicates maximum ages younger than 43 ka BP, suggesting deposition during isotope stages 3 or 2. The glaciolacustrine deposits suffered strongly from glaciotectonic deformation, caused by renewed glacier advance through the fjord. It reached the inner shelf and led to deposition of a discordant till at Kap Herschell, most probably during the Late Weichselian.  相似文献

NOAA-AVHRR satellite data have been used for a multi-year analysis of the seasonal variation of snow cover on the peninsula of Jameson Land located from 70°30'N to 72°N on the eastern coast of Greenland. Monitoring programmes for muskoxen and geese populations in Jameson Land wert started in the early 1980s to assess the impact of oil exploration in the area. This study was conducted to provide snow cover data to the wildlife monitoring programmes because snow cover is an important factor which can affect the numbers and distribution of muskoxen and other wildlife in the area.
Snow cover mapping is based on the geometric correction and radiometric calibration of each satellite scene before the visual bands are corrected for the terrain-effects and high solar zenith angle by using a simple radiation model. The atmospheric effect on the thermal infrared bands is corrected by using the "split-window" method. An automatic filtering routine with empirically determined thresholds is used to determine cloud-and haze-covered areas before the snow cover is computed from a linear expression using albedos of bare ground and full snow cover. By combining the satellite information with ground measurements and a digital terrain model, both the spatial distribution of snow cover and the total snow cover depletion can be obtained.
The method makes it possible to analyse the variation in regional and seasonal snow cover in wildlife habitats. The variation in snow cover depletion has been analysed in five subareas in the muskox area, and the results indicate that the snow cover pattern is an important factor which influences muskox calf crop and regional distribution of the muskox population. The method has proved useful for monitoring the duration of snow cover, and its application ought to facilitate the future study of wildlife habitats in extensive alpine and arctic areas.  相似文献

The zonation pattern of rocky shores on north-west Spitsbergen is described. Intertidal communities on protected sites have features remarkably similar to temperate areas. Black lichens dominate the littoral fringe, fucoids and gastropods the eulittoral zone, whereas upper sublittoral zone is occupied by kelp. The paper contributes to the open field/common field discussion in historical-geographical circles, in as much as it analyzes an infield/outfield system from the northwestern part of Jutland, Denmark. The 1688 field book for the village of Tødsø on the island of Mors testifies the use of a strip-cultivated but non-compulsory land-use in the infield. At the same time most of the outfield was composed of turfwalled crofts, grazed and occasionally cropped in severalty by the 15 full farmers, and this was non-assessed land.  相似文献

Distinct, clay‐rich beds are common in fjord‐marine deposits in Trondheimsfjorden near the outlet of the Nidelva River. Their characteristic light‐grey colour makes the beds easily distinguishable from the surrounding brownish, bioturbated, muddy fjord sediments. The clay‐rich beds commonly display a clear stratification in clay, silt and very fine sand. The beds are interpreted as originating primarily from large quick‐clay landslides upstream along the Nidelva River. Such events resulted in a sudden increase in the supply of fines to the fjord from disintegrating landslide debris and heavily loaded effluent plumes, possibly favouring hyperpycnal flow. Typical beds can be divided into a clay‐rich lower section, reflecting an initial surge with high concentrations of suspended mud, and a sandier upper section reflecting pulses of higher energy. This development can be explained, for example, by a lowering in the supply of mud, an increasing activity of deltaic sediment gravity flows due to a higher availability of sandy sediments in the landslide‐affected river, and by flooding and/or breaching of landslide dams. The typical, stratified beds are interpreted as the result of one quick‐clay landslide, whereas exceptionally thick, less organized, stratified beds are possibly the result of several large and/or complex landslides. Radiocarbon dating of mollusc shells has helped to establish a chronology for major terrestrial landslides in the area. The frequency of landslides increases towards the end of the Holocene. This is explained by a progressively deeper incision of rivers during glacioisostatic rebound, possibly combined with a change to a wetter climate. The marine core record displays deformation structures and hiati representing submarine mass‐wasting events, and supports the evidence that the clay‐rich beds are weak layers in the fjord‐marine stratigraphy. The inherent weakness of these layers may be explained by their composition, immature texture, loose fabric and contrasting permeabilities in the deposits. Slide‐prone layers similar to the clay‐rich beds described here may be found in other comparable fjord‐marginal settings and are considered to be of importance for geohazard assessments.  相似文献
