Optimization of sub-band coding method for seismic data compression   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Seismic data volumes, which require huge transmission capacities and massive storage media, continue to increase rapidly due to acquisition of 3D and 4D multiple streamer surveys, multicomponent data sets, reprocessing of prestack seismic data, calculation of post‐stack seismic data attributes, etc. We consider lossy compression as an important tool for efficient handling of large seismic data sets. We present a 2D lossy seismic data compression algorithm, based on sub‐band coding, and we focus on adaptation and optimization of the method for common‐offset gathers. The sub‐band coding algorithm consists of five stages: first, a preprocessing phase using an automatic gain control to decrease the non‐stationary behaviour of seismic data; second, a decorrelation stage using a uniform analysis filter bank to concentrate the energy of seismic data into a minimum number of sub‐bands; third, an iterative classification algorithm, based on an estimation of variances of blocks of sub‐band samples, to classify the sub‐band samples into a fixed number of classes with approximately the same statistics; fourth, a quantization step using a uniform scalar quantizer, which gives an approximation of the sub‐band samples to allow for high compression ratios; and fifth, an entropy coding stage using a fixed number of arithmetic encoders matched to the corresponding statistics of the classified and quantized sub‐band samples to achieve compression. Decompression basically performs the opposite operations in reverse order. We compare the proposed algorithm with three other seismic data compression algorithms. The high performance of our optimized sub‐band coding method is supported by objective and subjective results.  相似文献

A detailed set of reactions treating the gas and aqueous phase chemistry of the most important iodine species in the marine boundary layer (MBL) has been added to a box model which describes Br and Cl chemistry in the MBL. While Br and Cl originate from seasalt, the I compounds are largely derived photochemically from several biogenic alkyl iodides, in particular CH2I2, CH2ClI, C2H5I, C3H7I, or CH3I which are released from the sea. Their photodissociation produces some inorganic iodine gases which can rapidly react in the gas and aqueous phase with other halogen compounds. Scavenging of the iodine species HI, HOI, INO2, and IONO2 by aerosol particles is not a permanent sink as assumed in previous modeling studies. Aqueous-phase chemical reactions can produce the compounds IBr, ICl, and I2, which will be released back into the gas phase due to their low solubility. Our study, although highly theoretical, suggests that almost all particulate iodine is in the chemical form of IO-3. Other aqueous-phase species are only temporary reservoirs and can be re-activated to yield gas phase iodine. Assuming release rates of the organic iodine compounds which yield atmospheric concentrations similar to some measurements, we calculate significant concentrations of reactive halogen gases. The addition of iodine chemistry to our reaction scheme has the effect of accelerating photochemical Br and Cl release from the seasalt. This causes an enhancement in ozone destruction rates in the MBL over that arising from the well established reactions O(1D) + H2O 2OH, HO2 + O3 OH + 2O2, and OH + O3 HO2 + O2. The given reaction scheme accounts for the formation of particulate iodine which is preferably accumulated in the smaller sulfate aerosol particles.  相似文献

The present paper aims to reconstruct the Lower Tagus Valley flooding history for the last ca. 6500 a, to explore the suitability of pollen‐based local vegetation development in supporting the reconstruction of flooding history, and to explain fluvial activity changes in terms of allogenic (climate, human impact) and autogenic (system intrinsic) processes. The flooding history has been determined by cored sedimentary records located ~18 km apart in distal, low‐energy backswamps on both sides of the Tagus channel. In these low‐energy backswamps, fine‐grained sediment layers deposited from suspended load of overbank flood water reflect periods with multiple overbank floods. By means of a multi‐proxy approach (sedimentology, magnetic susceptibility, grain size, loss‐on‐ignition, carbonate content and pollen), sedimentary and environmental changes were identified. At both sites, synchronous lithological intervals accumulated, suggesting a common origin for the changes in fluvial activity since ca. 6500 cal. a BP. Based on lithological changes, three phases of high fluvial activity (6500–5500, 4900–3500 and 1000–0 cal. a BP) and two phases of low fluvial activity (5500–4900 and 3500–1000 cal. a BP) were identified. Two periods with dominant allogenic controls on fluvial activity in the Lower Tagus Valley were identified: relative sea level (6500–5500 cal. a BP) and human impact (1000–0 cal. a BP). During the intermediate period, changes in fluvial activity may have been caused by climate (5500–1000 cal. BP), but unambiguous correlations are difficult to make. This is due to the way allogenic controls are translated through the fluvial system, the geomorphological differences between upstream and downstream studies and autogenic processes. The comparison of local vegetation development and flooding phases as reconstructed using sedimentology shows a limited added value of using local palynology as a proxy for fluvial activity. Carleton University and Sander Geophysics are developing an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) for aeromagnetic surveying. As an early indication of the expected performance of the unmanned aircraft system, a simulated unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) was built. The simulated unmanned aircraft system is a T‐shaped structure configured as a horizontal gradiometer with two cesium magnetometers spaced 4.67 m apart, which is the same sensor geometry as planned for the unmanned aircraft system. The simulated unmanned aircraft system is flown suspended beneath a helicopter. An 8.5 km2 area in the Central Metasedimentary Belt of the Grenville Province, near Plevna, Ontario, Canada, was surveyed with the simulated unmanned aircraft system suspended 50 m above ground. The survey site was chosen on the basis of its complex geological structure. The total magnetic intensity (TMI) data recorded were compared to that obtained during a conventional fixed‐wing survey and a ground survey. Transverse magneto‐gradiometric data were also recorded by the simulated unmanned aircraft system. The simulated unmanned aircraft system total magnetic intensity data have a higher resolution than the conventional fixed‐wing data and were found to have a similar resolution to that of the ground survey data. The advantages of surveying with the simulated unmanned aircraft system were: (1) the acquisition of a detailed data set free of gaps in coverage at a low altitude above the terrain and (2) substantial saving of time and effort. In the survey site, the 4.67 m simulated unmanned aircraft system gradiometer measured the transverse magnetic gradient reliably up to an altitude of 150 m above ground.  相似文献

The presence of a wellbore skin layer, formed during the drilling process, is a major impediment for the energy‐efficient use of water wells. Many models exist that predict its potential impacts on well hydraulics, but so far its relevant hydraulic parameters were only estimates or, at best, model results. Here, we present data on the typology, thickness, composition, and hydraulic properties obtained from the sampling of excavated dewatering wells in lignite surface mines and from inclined core drilling into the annulus of an abandoned water well. Despite the limited number of samples, several types of skin were identified. Both surface cake filtration and particle straining in the aquifer occur. The presence of microcracks may be a determining feature for the hydraulic conductivity of skin layers. In the case of the well‐developed water supply well, no skin layer was detected. The observed types and properties of wellbore skin samples can be used to test the many mathematical skin models.  相似文献

The middle Miocene Valdearenas–Muduex section in the internally-drained, continental Madrid Basin (central Spain) is dated bio-magnetostratigraphically between 15.2 Ma and 11.5 Ma. The section contains two formation-scale, sedimentary sequences, that both consist of a siliciclastic lower part and a calcareous upper part. Siliciclastic sedimentation took place in distal floodplain and fluvial environments, while limestones resulted from carbonate precipitation in calcic soil profiles and in ephemeral lacustrine water bodies. Spectral analysis of the L* colour time series points to the influence of the ~ 405-kyr and 0.97-Myr eccentricity cycles, while the bases of the two calcareous intervals correlate to successive minima of the 2.4-Myr eccentricity cycle. The 405-kyr cycle lags maximum eccentricity, whereas the 0.97 and 2.4-Myr cycles lag minimum eccentricity, each by approximately a quarter of a cycle. No obliquity forcing is detected. The observed orbital configuration of 2.4-Myr minima at the base of limestone-dominated intervals is similar to a previously documented Late Miocene shift in the Teruel Basin of northeast Spain. Our results indicate that long-period eccentricity climate forcing may well be a significant player on long, tectonic time scales in continental basin fill.  相似文献

A two-dimensional two-phase flow framework for fluid–sediment flow simulation in the surf and swash zones was described. Propagation, breaking, uprush and backwash of waves on sloping beaches were studied numerically with an emphasis on fluid hydrodynamics and sediment transport characteristics. The model includes interactive fluid–solid forces and intergranular stresses in the moving sediment layer. In the Euler–Euler approach adopted, two phases were defined using the Navier–Stokes equations with interphase coupling for momentum conservation. The k–εkε closure model and volume of fluid approach were used to describe the turbulence and tracking of the free surface, respectively. Numerical simulations explored incident wave conditions, specifically spilling and plunging breakers, on both dissipative and intermediate beaches. It was found that the spatial variation of sediment concentration in the swash zone is asymmetric, while the temporal behavior is characterized by maximum sediment concentrations at the start and end of the swash cycle. The numerical results also indicated that the maximum turbulent kinetic energy and sediment flux occurs near the wave-breaking point. These predictions are in general agreement with previous observations, while the model describes the fluid and sediment phase characteristics in much more detail than existing measurements. With direct quantifications of velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, sediment concentration and flux, the model provides a useful approach to improve mechanistic understanding of hydrodynamic and sediment transport in the nearshore zone.  相似文献

Recent studies have shed new light on humidity conditions in the polar atmospheric boundary layer, and cast doubt on the reliability of humidity measurements above the frost point humidity. These issues are addressed herein by considering the processes that affect humidity and its measurement in cold climate conditions and by analyzing observations from two sites, at which the relative humidity is frequently above 100% at sub-freezing temperatures, as shown by repeatedly observed in-cloud icing events. Humidity measurements were made at these two sites by the commonly used Vaisala HMP35 probe and HMP233 capacitance probes respectively and simultaneously by the same manufacturer’s HMP243 probe that determines the frost point by a heated capacitance sensor. The results confirm that the relative humidity is frequently well above the frost point, both due to radiative cooling and to the advection of moist air, and that the conventional humidity measurements are unable to detect these events. Furthermore, after such events, the iced sensors show too high a humidity. The false values occur due to ice growth on the probe and cannot be corrected by any algorithm. Our results indicate that these problems, inherent to conventional humidity measurements in cold and humid environments, are avoided by the use of HMP243, which has a heated humidity probe.  相似文献

Prompt location of areas exposed to high erosion is of the utmost importance for soil and water conservation planning. Erosion models can be useful tools to locate sources of sediment and areas of deposition within a catchment, but the reliability of model predictions of spatial patterns of erosion at catchment scale has seldom been validated against observations. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of a simple empirical model (Morgan, Morgan and Finney model, MMF) in predicting spatial patterns of erosion at two small catchments in the East African Highlands: Kwalei (Tanzania) and Gikuuri (Kenya). Erosion maps predicted by the MMF model were compared with erosion maps obtained by direct survey. In Kwalei, erosion features were especially frequent in fields of annual crops. In Gikuuri, slope was the critical erosion factor, with estimated erosion rates >10 kg m?2 a?1 on slopes >18 per cent. Predicted erosion rates were mainly transport‐limited and ranged from <0·01 to 13·50 kg m?2 a?1 in Kwalei and 9·29 kg m?2 a?1 in Gikuuri. The performance of the MMF model in predicting the spatial patterns of erosion was acceptable in Kwalei, but poor in Gikuuri. However, by excluding the elements at the valley bottoms in Gikuuri Catchment, the performance of the model improved dramatically. The spatial pattern of erosion predicted by the MMF model was driven by the accumulation of surface runoff, which did not consider the possibility of re‐infiltration along the slope. As a result, the MMF erosion patterns predicted by the model increased invariably from the ridges to the valley bottoms, hampering the model suitability for locating areas subjected to high and very high erosion. It is concluded that the model predictions could be substantially improved by introducing a more realistic hydrological component for the prediction of surface runoff along the hill‐slope.
