Mars surface characteristics at and near the Viking Chryse and Tritonis Lacus landing areas were determined by radio scatter using the new 12.6 cm radar at the Arecibo Observatory during 1975–1976. Interpretation of each power spectrum suggests rms surface tilts of 4° at the final A1WNW (47.9°W, 22.5°N) site, 5° near the original A1 site, and 6° between the two. At the back-up site (A2) surface roughness estimates were about 4°. Striking changes in surface texture have been found near the eastern bases of Tharsis Montes and Albor Tholus, each volcanic feature marking the western boundary of very smooth surface units. The roughness sensed at 1 to 100 m scales by radar appears to be relatively independent of the surface units defined at large scale lengths by photogeologists. Radar properties thus provide an additional means by which planetary surfaces may be characterized.  相似文献

Neighborhood quality is an important attribute of housing yet its value is rarely known to researchers. We argue that changes in nearby foreclosures reveal changes in neighborhood quality. Thus estimates of the hedonic price of nearby foreclosures provide a glimpse of values that people hold for local neighborhood quality. The empirical models include controls for both spatial dependence in housing prices and in the errors. The estimates indicate that nearby foreclosures produce externalities that are capitalized into home prices—an additional foreclosure within 250 feet of a sale negatively impacts selling price by approximately $1,666, ceteris paribus.  相似文献

We report optical and near-infrared spectroscopy, and optical spectropolarimetry, of the peculiar variable V838 Mon during the multiple outburst phase in early 2002. The spectral evolution is exceptional. Our earliest spectra (2002 January) are noteworthy for their strong absorption lines of barium and strontium in the optical, and bands of CO and circumstellar H2O in the near-infrared. All but the CO weaken or are absent in later spectra. The behaviour of the CO band during this phase is extraordinary: initially in absorption, it was observed two months later in optically thick emission. The excitation of the CO is probably the result of the propagation of a shock wave at the third maximum. The two spectropolarimetric epochs were taken 6 and 27 d after the second outburst on 2002 February 8. The polarization at both times was measured to be   pV ≈ 2.7  per cent. Nearly all of the measured polarization is believed to be due to interstellar dust, a conclusion that is consistent with previous studies. At both epochs, however, a weak and variable intrinsic component is thought to be present. Between January and March of 2002 the luminosity of V838 Mon increased by a factor of 15 and the apparent diameter increased fourfold.  相似文献

Bistatic radar observations of Mars' north polar region during 1977–1978 showed surface rms slope σβ ranging from 1 to 6°; these values apply to horizontal scales of 1–100 m. Values of roughness tend to decrease with increasing latitude (especially over 65–80°N), but there are many exceptions. The smoothest surfaces (σβ≤1°) appear to be inclusions within generally rougher (σβ~3°) terrain, rather than broad expanses of very smooth material. The permanent north polar cap is relatively uniform with 2.5?σβ?3.0°. Considerable structure has been found in echo spectra, indicating a heterogeneous and perhaps anisotropic scattering surface. Echo spectra obtained from the same region, but several months apart (1°<LS<62°), show no significant differences in inferred roughness. Estimates of reflectivity and dielectric constant are systematically low in the polar region. This may indicate that surface material north of 65°N is less dense than that near the equator, but more study of these data is needed. Estimates of surface roughness and dielectric constant in the equatorial region are consistent with results from Earth-based measurements to the accuracy of our analysis.  相似文献

Slope probability densities were derived from the power spectra of radar echoes from Mars using integral inversion. The inverse problem is ill-posed; that is, small changes in the data can lead to large changes in the solution. We describe a method of stabilizing the inversion, which was necessary for echoes with signal-to-noise power spectral densities on the order of unity, and for those with broad spectral distributions. The resulting slope probabilities usually consisted of a component due to quasi-specular reflection which decreased rapidly with tilt, plus a broad, slowly decreasing, “diffuse” component due to scattering from (1) surface scales small compared with a radar wavelength, or (2) larger features with high slopes. In the absence of more complete polarization measurements, we are unable to In the absence of more complete polarization measurements, we are unable to distinguish between these possibilities. Root mean square tilts have been determined separately for the two cases. For case (1), values of rms tilt associated with surface features responsible for the quasi-specular echo are normally less than 3°; for case (2), values greater than 8° are common. The NASA/Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) climatemodel is forced with globally observed sea-surfacetemperatures (SST) in five simulations, 1969–1991,with individual runs beginning from altered initialatmospheric conditions. The interannual variability ofmodeled anomalies of the Southern Oscillation Index,mid-tropospheric temperatures, 850 mb zonal winds andOutgoing Longwave Radiation over the tropical PacificOcean, which has the largest SST anomaly forcing, arestrongly correlated with observed trends which reflectENSO cycles. The model's rainfall variability overthree agriculturally intensive regions, two tropicaland one mid-latitude, is investigated in order toevaluate the potential usefulness of GCM predictionsfor agricultural planning. The correct sign ofZimbabwe seasonal precipitation anomalies was hindcastwithin a useful range of consensus only for selectseasons corresponding to extreme ENSO events for whichanomalous circulation patterns were ratherrealistically simulated. The correlation betweenhindcasts of Nordeste monthly precipitation andobservations increases with time smoothing, reaching0.64 for 5-month running means. Consensus betweenindividual runs is directly proportional to theabsolute value of Niño3 SST so that during ElNiño and La Niña years most simulations agreeon the sign of predicted Nordeste rainfall anomalies.We show that during selected seasons the uppertropospheric divergent circulation and near surfacemeridional displacements of the ITCZ are realisticallyrepresented by the ensemble mean of the simulations.This realistic simulation of both the synopticmechanisms and the resulting precipitation changesincreases confidence in the GCM's potential forseasonal climate prediction.  相似文献

A three-dimensional coupled analysis of the interaction of a floating buoy and its mooring is studied. External loads include hydrodynamic forces, tether tensions, wind loads and system weight and buoyancy. Nonlinearities include large rotational and translational motions and non-conservative fluid loads. The mooring problem is formulated as a nonlinear two-point-boundary-value-problem. At each instant in time, the mooring problem is solved by direct integration using a successive iterative algorithm to satisfy boundary conditions. Buoy kinetic and kinematic equations are derived assuming large angles represented by Euler parameters. Coupling between the buoy and the mooring is enforced by matching the velocities of the tether and buoy at the attachment point. A predictor-corrector coupling algorithm is used with multiple sizes of time steps used to provide stability for the separate mooring and buoy models. Numerical results are compared to experimental responses of three types of buoys (sphere, spar and disc) subject to both regular and irregular waves.  相似文献

Recently, evapotranspiration has been hypothesized to promote the secondary formation of calcium carbonate year‐round on tree islands in the Everglades by influencing groundwater ions concentrations. However, the role of recharge and evapotranspiration as drivers of shallow groundwater ion accumulation has not been investigated. The goal of this study is to develop a hydrologic model that predicts the chloride concentrations of shallow tree island groundwater and to determine the influence of overlying biomass and underlying geologic material on these concentrations. Groundwater and surface water levels and chloride concentrations were monitored on eight constructed tree islands at the Loxahatchee Impoundment Landscape Assessment (LILA) from 2007 to 2010. The tree islands at LILA were constructed predominately of peat, or of peat and limestone, and were planted with saplings of native tree species in 2006 and 2007. The model predicted low shallow groundwater chloride concentrations when inputs of regional groundwater and evapotranspiration‐to‐recharge rates were elevated, while low evapotranspiration‐to‐recharge rates resulted in a substantial increase of the chloride concentrations of the shallow groundwater. Modeling results indicated that evapotranspiration typically exceeded recharge on the older tree islands and those with a limestone lithology, which resulted in greater inputs of regional groundwater. A sensitivity analysis indicated the shallow groundwater chloride concentrations were most sensitive to alterations in specific yield during the wet season and hydraulic conductivity in the dry season. In conclusion, the inputs of rainfall, underlying hydrologic properties of tree islands sediments and forest structure may explain the variation in ion concentration seen across Everglades tree islands.
