We report the identification of a possible optical counterpart to the super-Eddington X-ray source NGC 5204 X-1. New Chandra data show that the X-ray source is point-like, with a luminosity of 5.2×1039 erg s−1 (0.5–8 keV) . It displays medium- and long-term X-ray variability in observations spanning a period of 20 yr. The accurate Chandra position allows us to identify a blue optical continuum source ( m v =19.7) at the position of NGC 5204 X-1, using newly obtained optical data from the INTEGRAL instrument on the William Herschel Telescope. The X-ray and optical source properties are consistent with the scenario in which we are observing the beamed X-ray emission of a high-mass X-ray binary in NGC 5204, composed of an O star with either a black hole or neutron star companion.  相似文献

We present simultaneous X-ray and optical B - and V -band light curves of the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 3783 spanning 2 years. The flux in all bands is highly variable and the fluctuations are significantly correlated. As shown before by Stirpe et al. the optical bands vary simultaneously, with a delay of less than 1.5 d but both B and V bands lag the X-ray fluctuations by 3–9 d. This delay points at optical variability produced by X-ray reprocessing and the value of the lag places the reprocessor close to the broad-line region. A power spectrum analysis of the light curve, however, shows that the X-ray variability has a power-law shape bending to a steeper slope at a time-scale of ∼2.9 d while the variability amplitude in the optical bands continues to grow towards the longest time-scale covered, ∼300 d. We show that the power spectra together with the small value of the time delay are inconsistent with a picture where all the optical variability is produced by X-ray reprocessing, though the small amplitude, rapid optical fluctuations might be produced in this way. We detect larger variability amplitudes on long time-scales in the optical bands than in the X-rays. This behaviour adds to similar results recently obtained for at least three other active galactic nuclei and indicates a separate source of long-term optical variability, possibly accretion rate or thermal fluctuations, in the optically emitting accretion disc.  相似文献

Optical emission studies have been performed on the laser ablation of Titanium metallic targets. The high intensity radiation of a pulsed N2 laser (337.1 nm; 8 J/cm2) was focused onto the target to generate a short living (150 ns) plasma cloud that expands away from the surface into vacuum at high velocities. Time resolved measurements were taken as a function of the distance from the studied surface with a spatial rsolution of 20 µm, by collecting the emitted light in a direction perpendicular to the plasma expansion axis. A simple diffusion model with a source term is proposed to demonstrate the interaction of the laser beam with the plasma plume, as derived from analysis of the space-time behavior of several UV and visible atomic transitions.  相似文献

We discuss ROSAT HRI X-ray observations of 33 very nearby galaxies, sensitive to X-ray sources down to a luminosity of approximately 1038 erg s−1. The galaxies are selected from a complete, volume-limited sample of 46 galaxies with     for which we have extensive multiwavelength data. For an almost complete subsample with     (29/31 objects) we have HRI images. Contour maps and source lists are presented within the central region of each galaxy, together with nuclear upper limits where no nuclear source was detected. Nuclear X-ray sources are found to be very common, occurring in ∼35 per cent of the sample. Nuclear X-ray luminosity is statistically connected to host galaxy luminosity – there is not a tight correlation, but the probability of a nuclear source being detected increases strongly with galaxy luminosity, and the distribution of nuclear luminosities seems to show an upper envelope that is roughly proportional to galaxy luminosity. While these sources do seem to be a genuinely nuclear phenomenon rather than nuclear examples of the general X-ray source population, it is far from obvious that they are miniature Seyfert nuclei. The more luminous nuclei are very often spatially extended, and H  ii region nuclei are detected just as often as LINERs. Finally, we also note the presence of fairly common superluminous X-ray sources in the off-nuclear population – out of 29 galaxies we find nine sources with a luminosity greater than 1039 erg s−1. These show no particular preference for more luminous galaxies. One is already known to be a multiple SNR system, but most have no obvious optical counterpart and their nature remains a mystery.  相似文献

The coupling between tectonic factors and climate processes is a key element in understanding landscape evolution. However, few studies address this issue in the context of unglaciated tropical areas in passive continental margins. Thus, this research aimed to understand the origins and evolution of the geomorphological landscape in the eastern sector of Northeast Brazil along the Late Quaternary, between the Last Interstadial (Marine Isotopic State 3) and the Upper Holocene. The morphostratigraphic approach, coupled with sedimentological analyses and optically stimulated luminescence dating of sediments, showed that the depositional record stored in the landscape ranges from at least 60 000 years BP until the Upper Holocene. Depositional intervals suggest that there were moments of climatic instability followed by moments of relative geomorphological quiescence. Such active moments coincide chronologically with Heinrich and Dansgaard-Oeschger events, which are likely linked to changes in paleo-pluviosity that might respond to the dismantling of elluvial covers and colluvial deposition in the area. Likewise, reworking of hillslope materials led to increased deposition in the fluvial realm. In addition, such deposits might have been affected by the neotectonic complexity of the area, responsible for the creation of non-concatenated accommodation spaces, indicating a dynamics of uplifting and subsidence of blocks typical of passive margin taphrogenic environments. Therefore, the formative processes that led to the Late Quaternary deposition of sediments in a platform margin context reflect a coupling between tectonic and climatic factors. The former, driven by precipitation variability on a regional scale, triggered fluvial and high-energy hillslope processes that resulted in ubiquitous valley floor and piedmont aggradation, whereas the latter led to the dismantling of local base levels, transforming depositional units into new denudational landforms subject to the current climate dynamics. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A deep epithermal vein system hosted in Late Proterozoic to Cambrian granodiorite has been identified in the Sierra Norte de Córdoba, the easternmost range of the Sierras Pampeanas Orientales of Argentina. The vein swarm extends over an area of 3 km2 parallel to a mylonitic belt and formed in fractured granodiorite. Thicknesses of veins are less than 0.5 m and their visible strike length is less than 100 m. Veins are either barren or weakly mineralized in base-metal sulfides. Most veins have mineral associations dominated by calcite and quartz with lesser amounts of chlorite, sericite, pyrite, and minor illite. In other less exposed albite-rich, adularia-bearing veins, chalcopyrite, bornite, galena, sphalerite, chalcocite and covellite may occur. The widespread occurrence of bladed calcite without any petrographic or microthermometric evidence of boiling implies that this particular habit of calcite may also develop under sub-near boiling fluid conditions. Thermometric calculations based on fluid inclusion data, chlorite composition and oxygen isotopes in the quartz–calcite pair, constrain the formation of the system between 300 and 350 °C, at pressures between 42 and 64 MPa (1.5–2.3 km). Stable isotope data suggest that W/R interaction might have been the most probable mechanism of alteration, involving the participation of meteoric fluids; nevertheless, the metallic signature of some weakly mineralized veins as well as intermediate fluid inclusion salinities favor a magmatic input and a mixed origin for the fluids. Textures and mineral associations, as well as the absence of evidence of boiling in fluid inclusions, all suggest that the silica–carbonate vein system formed deeper than typically shallow Au and Ag-bearing boiling solutions. A 485 (±25) Ma lamprophyre dike crosscuts some of these veins locally producing metasomatic reactions and skarn formation, which constrains the age of the hydrothermal system to the Cambrian-Early Ordovician time span.  相似文献

Offshore oil and gas drilling often involves the use of fluids containing barium and traces of other heavy metals. These may affect the environment, but information on their toxicity to benthic biota remains scant. Here, we present results of a 10-day bioassay with the marine nematode Rhabditis (Pellioditis) marina at different loads of barium (0-10 ,000 ppm nominal concentrations) and cadmium (0-12 ppm) in the range of concentrations reported from drilling-impacted sediments. Barium did not affect the fitness and population development of R. (P.) marina at concentrations up to 300 ppm, but did cause a decrease in population abundance and an increase in development time from concentrations of 400-2000 ppm onwards. Increased mortality occurred at 4800 ppm Ba. For cadmium, LOEC and EC?? values for total population abundance were 2.95 and 8.82 ppm, respectively. Cd concentrations as low as 2.40 to 2.68 caused a decrease in the abundance of adult nematodes, indicating that assays covering more generations would likely demonstrate yet more pronounced population-level effects. Our results indicate that oil and gas drilling activities may potentially have important implications for the meiobenthos through the toxicity of barium and associated metals like cadmium.  相似文献

We present a detailed analysis of high-resolution Chandra observations of the merger system NGC 3256, the most infrared-luminous galaxy in the nearby universe. The X-ray data show that several discrete sources embedded in complex diffuse emission contribute ≳20 per cent of the total emission     in the  0.5–10 keV  energy range). The compact sources are hard and extremely bright and their emission is probably dominated by accretion-driven processes. Both galaxy nuclei are detected with  LX∼3–10×1040 erg s−1  . No evidence is found for the presence of an active nucleus in the southern nucleus, contrary to previous speculation. Once the discrete sources are removed, the diffuse component has a soft spectrum that can be modelled by the superposition of three thermal plasma components with temperatures   kT =0.6  , 0.9 and 3.9 keV. Alternatively, the latter component can be described as a power law with index  Γ∼3  . Some evidence is found for a radial gradient of the amount of absorption and temperature of the diffuse component. We compare the X-ray emission with optical, H α and NICMOS images of NGC 3256 and find a good correlation between the inferred optical/near-infrared and X-ray extinctions. Although inverse Compton scattering could be important in explaining the hard X-rays seen in the compact sources associated with the nuclei, the observed diffuse emission is probably of thermal origin. The observed X-ray characteristics support a scenario in which the powerful X-ray emission is driven solely by the current episode of star formation.  相似文献
