This paper evaluates the quality of the ensemble hydrological reforecasts obtained using the 18-year ensemble meteorological reforecast dataset available from the Canadian Centre for Meteorological and Environmental Prediction (CCMEP). This study focuses on four large watersheds in the province of Quebec. A distribution-based scaling (DBS) post-processing method is used to correct the 18-year ensemble precipitation reforecasts. An Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) assimilation technique is also assessed to improve the initial conditions of the hydrologic model. There is a slight improvement in performance and reliability after applying the DBS approach to precipitation reforecasts, but this technique induces a reduction in the spread. The impact of the integration of the post-processed precipitation into the hydrologic model is also quite marginal. However, the addition of an EnKF provides better ensemble hydrological reforecasts with high performance, reliability, and skill, especially in the first reforecast horizons. The best results are, however, generally obtained when using DBS and an EnKF together. Combining DBS and an EnKF, hydrological forecasts for the next two weeks are obtained using the CCMEP reforecast and also the second generation Global Ensemble Forecast System (GEFS v2) reforecast, which is considered a reference. Forecasts of comparable skill and spread are obtained, with CCMEP-based forecasts showing better spread during the first week, and GEFS v2–based reforecasts showing better skill and spread during the second week. Finally, it is shown that the two meteorological reforecast products assessed in this study have similar economic value for hydrological forecasting applications based on the cost–loss model.  相似文献

We report silicon isotopic determinations for USGS rock reference materials BHVO-1 and BHVO-2 using a Nu Plasma multi-collector (MC)-ICP-MS, upgraded with a new adjustable entrance slit, to obtain medium resolution, as well as a stronger primary pump and newly designed sampler and skimmer cones ("B" cones). These settings, combined with the use of collector slits, allowed a resolution to be reached that was sufficient to overcome the 14N16O and 14N2 interferences overlying the 30Si and the 28Si peaks, respectively, in an earlier set-up. This enabled accurate measurement of both δ30Si and δ29Si. The δ value is expressed in per mil variation relative to the NBS 28 quartz reference material. Based on data acquired from numerous sessions spread over a period of six months, we propose a recommended average δ30Si of −0.33 ± 0.05‰ and −0.29 ± 0.11‰ (2se) for BHVO-1 and BHVO-2, respectively. Our BHVO grand mean silicon isotope composition (δ30Si =−0.31 ± 0.06‰) is significantly more negative than the only published value for BHVO-2, but is in very good agreement with the recently established average value of ocean island basalts (OIB), confirming the conclusion that the OIB reservoir has a distinct isotopic composition from the solar reservoir as sampled by chondrites.  相似文献

Since July 2002, tertiary treated wastewater has been artificially recharged through two infiltration ponds in the dunes of the Belgian western coastal plain. This has formed a lens of artificially recharged water in the dunes’ fresh water lens. Recharged water is recovered by extraction wells located around the ponds. Hydraulic aspects of the artificial recharge and extraction are described using field observations such as geophysical borehole loggings and a tracer test. Borehole logs indicate recharged water up to 20 m below surface, whereas the tracer test gives field data about the residence times of the recharged water. Furthermore, a detailed solute transport model was made of the area surrounding the ponds. Groundwater flow, capture zone, residence times and volume of recharged water in the aquifer are calculated. This shows that the residence time varies between 30 days and 5 years due to the complex flow pattern. The extracted water is a mix of waters with different residence times and natural groundwater, assuring a relatively stable water quality of the extracted water.  相似文献

The influence of wave-associated parameters controlling turbulent \(\hbox {CO}_2\) fluxes through the air–sea interface is investigated in a coastal region. A full year of high-quality data of direct estimates of air–sea \(\hbox {CO}_2\) fluxes based on eddy-covariance measurements is presented. The study area located in Todos Santos Bay, Baja California, Mexico, is a net sink of \(\hbox {CO}_2\) with a mean flux of \(-1.3\, \upmu \hbox {mol m}^{-2}\hbox {s}^{-1}\) (\(-41.6\hbox { mol m}^{-2}\hbox {yr}^{-1}\)). The results of a quantile-regression analysis computed between the \(\hbox {CO}_2\) flux and, (1) wind speed, (2) significant wave height, (3) wave steepness, and (4) water temperature, suggest that the significant wave height is the most correlated parameter with the magnitude of the flux but the behaviour of the relation varies along the probability distribution function, with the slopes of the regression lines presenting both positive and negative values. These results imply that the presence of surface waves in coastal areas is the key factor that promotes the increase of the flux from and into the ocean. Further analysis suggests that the local characteristics of the aqueous and atmospheric layers might determine the direction of the flux.  相似文献

Lake margin sedimentary systems have been the subject of only limited study. The cyclic Middle Devonian lacustrine succession of Northern Scotland contains repeated developments of shore zone sandstones and thus provides an ideal location for the study of these units. The cycles comprise deep lake, shallow lake, playa and shore zone facies. Detailed field observations are presented alongside ground penetrating radar data which has aided large‐scale and three‐dimensional characterization of the shore zone sand bodies. Loading and discrete channel forms are recognized in thin‐bedded sandstones within the lower portion of the lake shore zone successions. Up‐section, the sandstone beds appear to become amalgamated, forming subtle low angle accretionary bar complexes. Where imaged on the radar profiles, the repeated development of shoreward migrating features succeeded by more shallow angled lakeward accreting surfaces is recognized; these are ascribed to washover and swash–backwash processes, respectively. The orientation of these features is similar to palaeocurrent measurements from oscillation ripples, suggesting an alignment of the shore zone bars perpendicular to the prevailing wind direction. Further loaded sandstone beds and sand‐filled shallow channel features overlie the bar forms. The context of the shore zone facies allows the controls on its formation to be examined. The shore zone sandstones overlie playa facies which contain abundant desiccation horizons, reflecting the most arid phase in the climatically controlled lacustrine cycle. As climatic conditions ameliorated, the rejuvenation of fluvial systems resulted in the transport of sand out into the basin. Initial deposition was limited to intermittent events where sediment was laid down on a water‐saturated substrate. High resolution fluctuations in lake level resulted in periodic short‐lived reworking events along the lake margins which produced amalgamated sands, forming low relief bars. Shore zone reworking is likely to have occurred over a wide  area as the lake margin migrated back and forth, and gradually transgressed.  相似文献

Stream water chemistry is routinely measured over time at fixed and sparse sites, which provides a coarse image of spatial variability. Here, we measured nitrate, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and several chemical proxies for water flowpaths, catchment residence time and biogeochemical transformations, every 50–100 m along 13 km of streams in six agricultural headwater catchments (1.1–3.5km2). The objective was to examine controls on longitudinal nitrate profiles at a high spatial resolution during four seasons: rewetting of the catchments in autumn, winter high-flow, spring recession and summer low-flow. Our results showed monotonic trends in longitudinal profiles for nitrate and DOC, which were opposite for the two solutes. Spatial trends in water-chemistry profiles persisted across seasons, which suggests time-invariant controls on the spatial variations in concentrations. Four catchments exhibited decreasing nitrate and increasing DOC from upstream to downstream, while two catchments exhibited increasing nitrate and decreasing DOC. These smooth gradients did not reflect a longitudinal land-use gradient, but rather an increase in the proportion of groundwater inflows when moving downstream, as suggested by the chemical proxies and punctual discharge measurements. Water chemistry also changed abruptly at confluences, at a farm point source and at a localized groundwater inflow zone.  相似文献
