A telemetrically controlled system was developed to add nutrients automatically to experimental patch reefs in a remote marine environment. The experiment, called ENCORE, was done in the lagoon of One Tree Island, a remote research station at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. Nutrient dispensing units (NDUs), moored adjacent to patch reefs in the lagoon, were telemetrically linked to a base station on the island. The base station, about 3 km away from the furthest NDU, consisted of a dedicated computer, controller and radio transmitter, which relayed coded signals to a radio receiver mounted on each NDU. This activated a solenoid valve to discharge a measured quantity of concentrated nutrient solution from a measuring chamber using compressed air from a SCUBA tank. The solution was discharged through 4-8 PVC outlets into the basins of the patch reefs to allow thorough mixing. The base station interrogated each NDU to find out if the operation had been successful and stored the information on disk to provide a daily log of operations. Nutrient samples taken within the patch reefs demonstrated that calculated initial mean concentrations of 2 micrograms-at PO4-P l-1 and 10 micrograms-at NH4-N l-1 were achieved. The system we have developed can be used in many situations where regular perturbations need to be introduced to aquatic ecosystems. It uses state-of-the-art technology, yet all components are commercially readily available and relatively inexpensive. Goat Paddock in northern Western Australia is a ~5 km-diameter impact crater of Eocene age excavated in gently dipping Proterozoic sandstones. Roughly radial gorges formed by post-impact erosion provide cross-sectional views of the wall and rim zone. The predominant structural theme is one of synclinal rim folding with broad zones in which bedrock strata were deformed by impact to steep, vertical and overturned attitudes. Impact breccia is found craterward of deformed bedrock, on top of it, and downdropped into fault troughs roughly concentric to the crater. The bedrock?–?breccia contact is sharp in some places and gradational in others. In at least one section, the entire mass of upturned bedrock and breccia was displaced radially over essentially undisturbed bedrock, as indicated by slickensides on the horizontal contact. Talus deposits are similar to breccia, but show rough size sorting and clast orientation that dips steeply craterward, indicating that the talus formed as slides down the oversteepened crater wall immediately after crater formation. Shatter cones in some clasts indicate that allogenic material is incorporated in these deposits. Suevite, characterised by ropy flow textures, and by microclasts of quartz with planar deformation features, planar fractures, and of vesiculated silica glass, was found overlying deformed bedrock at a point where the surface of the bedrock forms a nearly horizontal bench midway up the crater wall. The crater was at least partially filled by later sediments, represented by bedded conglomerate close to the crater wall grading inward to sand, silt and mudstone recovered by drillholes on the crater floor. Some of the talus and conglomerate occupy re-entrants in the crater walls, suggesting an original scalloped outline to the crater. Two drillholes, one central and one halfway to the wall, both reached brecciated sandstone after penetrating 210 m of lake sediments. Goat Paddock has a flat floor with no indication of a central uplift and a depth/diameter ratio of ~0.073. This crater form, coupled with the modification of the crater walls by slumping and the scalloped outline of the crater rim suggests that Goat Paddock bridges the two traditional classes of impact crater: simple and complex.  相似文献

Marine sediment preserves a useful archive for contaminants and other properties that associate with particles. However, biomixing of sediments can smear the record on a scale of years to thousands of years, depending on sedimentation rate and on the depth and vigour of mixing within a particular sediment. Where such mixing occurs, dates can no longer be associated with discrete sediment depths. Nevertheless, much can still be learned from biomixed profiles, provided that mixing is accounted for. With no modelling at all, it is possible to calculate an inventory of a contaminant at a site and a maximum possible sedimentation rate, and to determine whether the contaminant has increased or decreased over time. Radiodating the core with (210)Pb permits the estimation of sedimentation and mixing rates, which can be combined with the surface contaminant concentration to estimate an approximate flux of the contaminant. Numerical models that incorporate sedimentation and mixing rates (determined using (210)Pb and other transient signals with known deposition histories) can provide the basis to propose plausible histories for contaminant fluxes.  相似文献

Field measurements of the rheology of Hawaiian and Etnean lavas have shown that, on eruption, they behave as Bingham liquids with yield strengths in the range 70–450 N/m2. Ultramafic nodules entrained in a Bingham liquid cannot settle unless the stress they impose on the liquid exceeds approximately 5–7 times its yield strength. Consequently magmas with yield strengths of 10–1000 N/m2 can transport xenoliths up to 30 cm diameter without settling occurring. The size of nodules commonly observed rarely exceeds 30 cm. A review of experimental data shows that, when conditions are appropriate for settling, the terminal velocities of nodules in magmas are substantially slower if a Bingham rather than Newtonian Model is assumed.The view that large nodules imply fast rates of magma ascent is rejected. A case is presented for slow rates of ascent being more suitable for nodule transport as there is more opportunity for cooling, crystallisation and hence development of a yield strength. The relative abundance of nodules in the alkaline suite may be a consequence of their slow rates of ascent, whereas their absence in tholeiitic melts may be a consequence of rapid ascent rates. This interpretation is compatible with deductions on their relative rates of ascent based on other geological evidence.  相似文献

The Denchai Basalt of northern Thailand is part of a large continental alkalic basaltic province extending through Thailand into Laos, Kampuchea, and Vietnam. It covers an area of about 70 km2 and consists of seven flows, all with reversed magnetic polarity. The uppermost flow has yielded an age of 5.64 ± 0.28 Ma by the K-Ar method. During the igneous activity, magmas were apparently erupted from only one vent area, but changed in chemical composition from “hawaiite” (transitional to continental tholeiite) to true hawaiite and then to basanite. The basanite is the probable source of gem-quality zircon and sapphire mined from placer deposits associated with the basalts.  相似文献

Eight new chemical analyses of rocks of Tutuila Island are given, and 20 new analyses of rocks of the Manu'a Islands will be reported elsewhere. Like the older analyses, all are of alkalic rocks. Tholeiitic rocks have not been found in Samoa, although they may be present in the submerged basal parts of the volcanoes. The differentiation trend of Samoan rocks for the most part closely parallels that of the Hawaiian alkalic suite. In both areas the probable parent magma is oceanitic. Quartz trachytes of Tutuila and rhyolitic obsidians of Easter Island are clearly members of the alkalic suite, although the rhyodacite of Hawaii still appears to be a tholeiitic derivative. Differentiation of alkalic olivine basalt magma to trachyte in some instances and to quartz trachyte or even sodic rhyolite in others may result from differences in the proportion of pyroxene to olivine in the separated material, which may in turn be a function of the depth at which crystallization takes place. In the Samoan Islands caldera formation took place after a considerable period of eruption of alkalic rocks, instead of before the appearance of alkalic rocks as is the case in Hawaii. Thus the details of the Hawaiian pattern cannot be extended to all other oceanic volcanoes.
Zusammenfassung In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird über acht neue chemische Analysen von Gesteinsproben der Insel Tutuila berichtet. In einer weiteren Veröffentlichung werden über 20 neue Gesteinsanalysen der Manu'a-Inseln publiziert. Es handelt sich wie bei früheren Analysen um alkalische Vulkanite. Tholeiitische Gesteine wurden in Samoa nicht gefunden; es ist aber möglich, daß solche in den untermeerischen Teilen der Vulkane vorhanden sind. Der Differentiations-Trend der Samoa-Gesteine verlief größtenteils parallel dem der hawaiianischen alkalischen Sippe. In beiden Gebieten ist das wahrscheinliche Ursprungsmagma ozeanitischer Art. Es ist sicher, daß die Quarztrachyte von Tutuila und die rhyolitischen Obsidiane der Osterinsel der alkalischen Sippe angehören, obwohl der Rhyodazit von Oahu, Hawaii, tholeiitischer Herkunft zu sein scheint. Die Differentiation des alkalischen olivinbasaltischen Magmas zu Trachyt einerseits und zu Quarztrachyt oder sogar zu Natrium-Rhyolith andererseits mag aus Unterschieden im Verhältnis von Pyroxen zu Olivin im getrennten Material herrühren. Dies mag wiederum eine Funktion der Tiefe sein in der die Kristallisation stattfindet. Im Gegensatz zu Hawaii fand auf den Samoainseln die Calderabildung nach einer starken Eruptions-Periode alkalischer Gesteine statt. Das bedeutet, daß die Einzelheiten des hawaiianischen Modells nicht auf alle anderen ozeanischen Vulkane anwendbar sind.

Résumé Huit analyses nouvelles chimiques de roches de l'Île Tutuila sont présentées, et 20 analyses nouvellées de roches des Îles Manu'a sont données ailleurs. Comme les analyses plus anciennes, toutes sont de roches alcalines. Des roches tholeiitiques ne sont pas découvrées à Samoa, quoiqu'il soit possible qu'elles existent dans la partie sous-marine des volcans. La direction de différenciation des roches de Samoa est en majeure partie conforme à celle de la suite alcalique hawaiienne. Dans toutes les régions le magma ancétral est probablement océanitique. Les trachytes à quartz de Tutuila et l'obsidien rhyolitique de l'Île Pâques évidemment sont membres de la suite alcalique, quoique le rhyodacite d'Hawaii semble être encore un dérivé tholeiitique. La différenciation de magma de la composition de basalte à olivine dans quelques circonstances à trachyte et dans d'autres circonstances à trachyte quartzifère ou même rhyolite sodique pourrait résulter des différences dans la proportion de pyroxéne à olivine dans la matière séparée qui à son tour pourrait être une fonction de la profondeur dans laquelle la cristallisation a lieu. Dans les îles Samoa la formation des caldères avait lieu après une période d'éruption des roches alcaliques, au lieu d'avant le début des roches alcaliques, comme dans Hawaii. Donc on ne peut pas appliquer les détails du modèle hawaiien à tous les autres volcans océaniques.
