To further our understanding of the Great Attractor (GA), we have undertaken a redshift survey using the 2-degree Field (2dF) instrument on the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). Clusters and filaments in the GA region were targeted with 25 separate pointings resulting in approximately 2600 new redshifts. Targets included poorly studied X-ray clusters from the Clusters in the Zone of Avoidance (CIZA) Catalogue as well as the Cen–Crux and PKS 1343−601 clusters, both of which lie close to the classic GA centre. For nine clusters in the region, we report velocity distributions as well as virial and projected mass estimates. The virial mass of CIZA J1324.7−5736, now identified as a separate structure from the Cen–Crux cluster, is found to be  ∼3 × 1014 M  , in good agreement with the X-ray inferred mass. In the PKS 1343−601 field, five redshifts are measured of which four are new. An analysis of redshifts from this survey, in combination with those from the literature, reveals the dominant structure in the GA region to be a large filament, which appears to extend from Abell S0639  ( l = 281°, b =+11°)  to  ( l ∼ 5°, b ∼−50°)  , encompassing the Cen–Crux, CIZA J1324.7−5736, Norma and Pavo II clusters. Behind the Norma cluster at   cz ∼ 15 000 km s−1  , the masses of four rich clusters are calculated. These clusters (Triangulum Australis, Ara, CIZA J1514.6−4558 and CIZA J1410.4−4246) may contribute to a continued large-scale flow beyond the GA. The results of these observations will be incorporated into a subsequent analysis of the GA flow.  相似文献

The linearized analytic representation of observed flux changes due to nonradial pulsations is examined under conditions applicable to a variety of pulsating star types. Histograms are presented as a function ofl, documenting the relative importance of local temperature, geometry, pressure, and limb-darkening variations, which are all contributing factors to the predicted flux changes. The most favourable situation for light and colour data to assist in mode discrimination for lowl requires, amongst other things, that the geometry-related factor be significant. This is noted to occur only if theQ value of the pulsation is not grossly different from theQ value of a radial fundamental pulsation. Published light and colour data for Cephei, 53 Persei, Scuti, rapidly oscillating Ap, Cepheid, and ZZ Ceti variables are compared with model predictions on an amplitude ratio versus phase difference plane . With the notable exception of the rapidly oscillating Ap stars, these comparisons suggest consistency of the nonradial flux change model with other known constraints on the different variable star groups.  相似文献

Cation diffusion rates at 690 ± 30 °C have been calculated by inverse modelling of observed manganese (Mn) zonation profiles in 40 garnets from two kyanite-bearing metapelite samples from the High Himalayan Crystalline Series, Zanskar, northwest India. Knowledge of the initial growth profile of Mn in garnet is a pre-requisite for this technique. Following previous workers we model Mn partitioning into growing garnet in terms of a Rayleigh fractionation process, and demonstrate that the Mngarnet:whole rock partition coefficient is 60–100. Three-dimensional zonation profiles were obtained by successively grinding and polishing ∼1 cm slabs of each sample at 0.1–0.2 mm intervals and analysing the garnets at each stage, thus ensuring that core sections were measured. The diffusion model assumes that garnet has a spherical geometry and behaves as a closed system, and simulates diffusive modification of the hypothetical Mn Rayleigh growth profile for each garnet. The derived measure of the time-integrated diffusion history for each garnet is then combined with radiometric and field-relation constraints for the duration of the Himalayan metamorphic event to calculate cation diffusion rates. The average cation interdiffusion rate calculated for garnets in the two samples examined is (6 ± 3.2) × 10−23 m2s−1. This interdiffusion rate pertains to a temperature of 690 ± 30 °C, which is 0.97 × T PEAK, the peak temperature conditions experienced by the samples estimated using standard thermobarometric techniques. Garnet compositions are Py2–17Alm65–77Gro6–16Sp1–17. These new diffusion data are consistent with, and more precise than, existing high-temperature (>1000 °C) experimentally determined diffusion data, although some uncertainties remain difficult to constrain. Qualitative comparison between diffusively modified Mn growth profiles in garnets from the Scottish Dalradian and the Himalayan garnets suggests that the duration of metamorphism affecting the Dalradian garnets was 10–20 times longer than that endured by the Himalayan garnets. Continental differences in the variability of annual runoff were investigated using an expanded and improved database to that used in previous work. A statistical analysis of the data, divided by continent and Köppen climate type, revealed that continental differences exist in the variability of annual runoff. The variability of annual runoff for temperate Australia, arid southern Africa and possibly temperate southern Africa were noted to be generally higher than that of other continents with data in the same climate type. A statistical analysis of annual precipitation by continent and Köppen climate type revealed that differences in the variability of annual precipitation could account for some but not all the observed differences in the variability of annual runoff. A literature review of potential causes of continental differences in evapotranspiration resulted in the hypothesis that the significantly higher variability of annual runoff in temperate Australia and possibly temperate southern Africa may be due to the distribution of evergreen and deciduous vegetation. The process model Macaque was used to test this hypothesis. The model results indicate that the variability of annual runoff may be between 1 and 99% higher for catchments covered in evergreen vegetation as opposed to deciduous vegetation, depending on mean annual precipitation and the seasonality of precipitation. It is suggested that the observed continental differences in the variability of annual runoff are largely caused by continental differences in the variability of annual precipitation and in temperate regions the distribution of evergreen and deciduous vegetation in conjunction with the distribution of mean annual precipitation and precipitation seasonality.  相似文献

Consideration is given to some special features of normalized apparent-resistivity (NAR) curves, resulting from the deployment of Wenner electrode arrays on the surface above dipping earth structures. Limiting values of the potential are derived when a direct-current source is located at points on the surface above a simple two-region dipping-bed earth model and their influence on corresponding NAR curve characteristics is investigated. Particular attention is given to the exploitation of such features to provide a new and direct approach to model parameter estimation, either as an alternative to traditional curve-matching techniques or as a source of supporting information when other earth model characterization methods have been employed. Throughout, the emphasis is on the single-dipping-bed model, but application to more complex structures is discussed, including examples of two dipping beds, dipping dikes and more general tilted unconformities.  相似文献

A large and geographically diverse data set consisting of meandering, braiding, incising, and post-incision equilibrium streams was used in conjunction with logistic regression analysis to develop a probabilistic approach to predicting thresholds of channel pattern and instability. An energy-based index was developed for estimating the risk of channel instability associated with specific stream power relative to sedimentary characteristics. The strong significance of the 74 statistical models examined suggests that logistic regression analysis is an appropriate and effective technique for associating basic hydraulic data with various channel forms. The probabilistic diagrams resulting from these analyses depict a more realistic assessment of the uncertainty associated with previously identified thresholds of channel form and instability and provide a means of gauging channel sensitivity to changes in controlling variables.  相似文献

The rate of spinel (MgAl2O4) growth at the interface between MgO and Al2O3 was investigated systematically at temperatures of 1200° to ∼2000°C and pressures between 1.0 and 4.0 GPa with a solid-media, piston-cylinder apparatus. As reported in previous 1-atm studies, the thickness (ΔX) of the spinel layer increases linearly with the square root of time for experiments differing only in duration, irrespective of pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions. The reaction rate constant (k = ΔX2/2t) is log-linear in 1/T and also in pressure. The apparent activation energy of 410 kJ/mol is independent of pressure; the apparent activation volume increases systematically with increasing temperature. Electron microprobe traverses across the spinel layer reveal a significant Al excess and charge-compensating Mg deficit near the spinel/corundum interface. This nonstoichiometry is promoted by high temperatures (>1500°C), suppressed by high pressures and varies linearly across the spinel to a near-stoichiometric composition at the interface with periclase. The Al and Mg composition gradients can be used to extract interdiffusion coefficients for Al ↔ Mg exchange through the spinel, which are described by D?=2.5×10−6 exp(−28200/T) m2sThese diffusivities differ substantially from the reaction rate constant k, reflecting the fact that k is a combination of the diffusivity and the reaction potential as indicated by the difference in spinel composition across the spinel layer (i.e., coexisting with corundum vs. coexisting with periclase). A simple model can be used to separate the two effects and show that the reaction potential (i.e., the MgO-Al2O3 phase diagram) is sensitive to changes in both temperature and pressure, whereas the governing diffusivity depends only on temperature.  相似文献
