Abstract. We discuss the critical problem of estimating daily egg production in the Daily Egg Production Method (DEPM), a widely used technique for the stock assessment of multiple spawning pelagic fishes. Data collected in 1999 for the stock of European anchovy ( Engraulis encrasicolus ) in the Southern Adriatic Sea are used to study the effects of different calibration techniques. We analyze the performances of the mortality model from which daily egg production is estimated. All these calibrations are based on the Bootstrap method. Nonlinear fitting (vs. linear regression on log-transformed data) is shown to guarantee more reliable parameter estimation. We show that specifying the function assigning age to staged eggs is crucial.  相似文献

The response of groundwater basins to natural and anthropogenic inputs depends on many interrelated factors such as the values of groundwater flow and mass transport parameters. This work presents a theoretical analysis of the impact of parameter uncertainty on groundwater management decisions. It is shown that under classical, Bayesian, and deterministic assumptions about the parameter structure, the resulting management decisions could be very different. This underscores the importance of adopting the proper parameter structure and the need for using consistent methods to solve the inverse problem.  相似文献

The measurement of metabolism using diel free-water oxygen techniques requires the estimation of atmospheric oxygen exchanges. We measured such exchange on nine different occasions in the freshwater, tidally-influenced Hudson River estuary using a floating dome technique. We also analyzed previously published data on the exchange of a variety of gases measured in lakes, estuaries, and open ocean waters using a wide variety of techniques. Data were expressed as a “transfer velocity” and normalized to an exchange of oxygen at 20°C. Considered together, these data indicate a significant predictive relationship when the natural log of transfer velocity is regressed with measured wind speed (r2 = 0.55; p = 0.0001). The influence of wind was particularly pronounced in estuaries and in lakes. Data from open-ocean waters showed much less influence of wind, probably because surface turbulence in these deeper waters can be temporally and spatially decoupled from wind. Our Hudson data agreed well with data collected in other systems. In general, data from estuaries—including the Hudson—indicated slightly higher transfer velocities at any given wind speed than do data from lakes (although this difference was less pronounced for our Hudson data than for other estuaries). The difference may result from some interaction of wind and tidal currents, or it may reflect a bias in the dome method of measurements; all of the estuarine data were collected using the dome approach, while the majority of the lake data were determined using an added tracer. If the dome method actually gives a biased, high estimate of oxygen flux, this is in contradiction to previous criticisms of this method that domes may underestimate fluxes by blocking wind at the water surface. We have used the regression of the natural log of transfer velocity versus wind speed developed here to estimate respiration in the Hudson estuary from diel changes in dissolved oxygen. To allow for possible biases in technique and for measurement error, we estimated 95% confidence limits around the regression. Estimates of respiration in the Hudson determined using the upper and lower 95% confidence limits are 30% higher and 12% lower than that determined when using the best-fit regression. An independently-constrained carbon budget for the tidally-influenced, freshwater Hudson River estuary indicates that respiration rates cannot be much higher than our mean estimate as calculated using the linear regression of the gas transfer and wind data to correct for air-water oxygen exchange. Gas transfer in natural systems is difficult to measure and is controlled by many interrelated physical factors. In the absence of extensive, system-specific field studies, the regression presented here should be useful in estimating atmospheric oxygen exchange in other estuarine or riverine ecosystems which are relatively deep and wide.  相似文献

A systematic geochemical investigation on the thermal manifestations of the volcanic area of Phlegrean Fields started in 1980, with the aim of obtaining useful information about the changes possibly occurring at the same time of vertical ground movements, termed as “bradyseismic”, which frequently interested this area.The attention was initially given to the fumaroles and the boiling pools of Solfatara and Pisciarelli, then subsequently extended to thermal springs, dug wells, and crater lakes.Analytical data pertaining to a period preceding the last crisis of 1982–1984 were then available, as well as other data collected during the previous crisis of 1970; a comprehensive picture of the variations observed before, during and after the acceleration of vertical movement has been drawn.According to the results obtained, the intrusion of a magmatic body as the trigger of the observed ground deformation is considered unrealistic. The whole area appears now in a quiet stage, and no further perturbation is expected without previous significant tectonic activity; chemical precursors appear suitable for an early detection of changes occurring at depth, to forecast possible consequences to be expected in the surface environment.  相似文献

Existing analytical procedures for nonsteady flow in a leaky confined aquifer assume that the aquifer system is areally infinite. A technique is presented that treats a leaky confined aquifer system of finite configuration. By means of a discrete space continuous time (DSCT) modeling approach, the partial differential equation governing the flow system is transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations that can be easily integrated numerically on a high speed digital computer using available scientific subroutines. The finite difference formulation is in effect an explicit scheme. A criterion is developed for which the scheme is computationally stable. A numerical example is presented.  相似文献

The geomorphology of the central Coastal Range, a north-south trending horst along the west coast of northern Calabria, is governed largely by major faults, fault scarps and the distribution of principal rock types, as well as by a variety of slope processes operative in a Mediterranean climate. Segments of the major rivers and streams have three principal orientations parallel to major faults in the study area: northwest right-oblique slip faults (oldest); E-W oblique slip faults; NE left-oblique slip faults; and north-south right oblique normal faults (youngest), all of which cut pre-Tertiary metamorphic rocks, Mesozoic limestone, Miocene molasse and calcarenite. Small, underfit alluvial fans, composed chiefly of locally derived debris flow detritus, are present at the mouths of large, west-flowing canyons, some of which reach eastward to the crest of the mountain range. Not only do the north-south normal faults displace rocks and structures of all orientations, but they also make steep scarps in the small alluvial fans and in sediments of the coastal plain. Locally, some of the scarps are buried by recent debris flow deposits. Incipient young rivers utilized the weaknesses along the major faults and cracks as avenues of erosion. Smaller streams and gullies generally flowed westward downflank of the north-trending horst and incised, thereby, deep, V-shaped canyons; some of them have captured older, SW-flowing canyons. Locally, they were guided in other directions where they encountered faults or tectonic fractures. The rocks present a varied resistance to erosion, depending upon the degree of cementation by groundwater salts, upon the orientation of the foliation, and upon the rocks themselves. Thus, mica schist with a relatively flat foliation forms nearly vertical sea cliffs, but the sea cliffs are more gentle where the foliation is steep or dips towards the sea. Therefore, downslope movements are facilitated by seaward slip on foliation, schistosity, bedding and fault surfaces, and are evinced especially by large and deep pre-Holocene landslides (Sackung) in phyllite having areal dimensions up to 2 Km2. Other downslope processes include surficial creep and soil slip, particularly of highly fractured phyllite and schist, block sliding and rock falls.  相似文献

The response of structures subjected to seismic actions is always influenced by P–Δ effects. The importance of this effect is generally modest for structures experiencing an elastic response but often relevant for structures responding well within the inelastic range of behaviour. Seismic codes indicate that P–Δ effects may be counterbalanced through an increase in the structural strength required by a first order analysis. This increase is calculated by means of a strength amplification factor. The expressions suggested in codes for this factor are simplistic and often criticized by researchers. In this paper, the effectiveness of some of the provisions reported in the literature or suggested in seismic codes is evaluated on single degree of freedom systems with different periods of vibration. As suggested by past studies, attention is focused on the influence of the interstorey drift sensitivity coefficient, significant duration of the ground motion, class of the site soil, displacement ductility and equivalent viscous damping ratio of the system. Deeply weathered plutonic rocks occur widely in the Sila Massif, Calabria, southern Italy. Three representative weathering profiles developed on the hilltops indicate that sand represents more than 50% by weight throughout most of the weathering profile, and silt- and clay-size fractions are also well represented, filling the interstices among corestones. Both sand, and finer fractions of grus, and soil horizons, are thought to be derived from a combination of granular disintegration and chemical decomposition, developed on relatively flat terrains of the Sila massif. These slopes are now experiencing transport-limited morphodynamics, under a montane-modified Mediterranean climate. The depth of the weathered layers, that have suffered little erosional truncation, typically exceed 15 m, and may reach 50–60 m or more. Major isolated or grouped exfoliation boulders are the most common minor landform feature developed on the Sila massif granite. Boulders have developed as a result of spheroidal weathering and by removal of the sandy-textured granite. The Schmidt hammer (SH) test on boulders and corestones, suggests three distinctive degree of weathering (from moderately to completely weathered rock), and that biotite content is the major controlling factor of the granite mechanical behaviour. Understanding of the dynamics of this weathering system is crucial to the interpretation of the complex suite of variables that control landscape evolution of granitoid terrains.  相似文献

Scientific research proposing any type of device/technique for seismic protection of buildings is generally based on numerical models that adopt simplifications to make possible extensive analyses. This means that important details of the inelastic response could be neglected. Following this consideration, regardless of the device/technique invented, before it could be put into practice, an experimental verification of the actual structural performance should be conducted by full-scale tests at building level. This issue is investigated in the paper considering seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete (RC) framed structures by buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) as technique to be validated, while hybrid test is selected as tool for experimental validation at building level. The analysed seismic upgrading technique consists in the insertion of BRBs into the RC frame. The upgrading intervention is designed by a method developed in previous studies. This technique responds to an important need of the society. Indeed, existing RC frames showed high vulnerability in occurrence of past earthquakes when they were not originally conceived to sustain horizontal forces. The hybrid test is selected among the available experimental techniques because it allows the experimentation on full-scale specimens with reasonable cost. In this study, a substructure hybrid test was conducted and the results are here presented to (a) evaluate the effectiveness of the design method of BRBs for seismic upgrading, (b) investigate the integration of BRBs in existing RC frame, and (c) show the potentiality of the substructure hybrid test for the experimental verification of innovative techniques for seismic protection of buildings.  相似文献

Estuaries exhibit a large range in their responses to nitrogen loadings determined in part by characteristics of the driver, such as magnitude and frequency, but also by such intrinsic characteristics as physical/chemical factors (e.g., depth, volume, hypsometry, salinity, turbidity) and biological factors (e.g., nature of ecological communities, trophic interactions). To address the richness of estuarine response to driver variables, the aim ultimately is to establish a simple estuarine classification scheme, beginning with a river-dominated subset of estuarine systems and focusing on the role of water residence time in the estuary. Residence time (or flushing time) is related to other drivers (streamflow, nutrient, and sediment loads) and drives much of the biological response of estuaries because of flushing effects on plankton, temperature, nutrients, and light. Toward this goal, nutrient–phytoplankton–zooplankton (NPZ) models have been used to examine a range of subjects including effects of nutrient limitation and zooplankton predation on phytoplankton dynamics and fish predation. This class of model can admit a wide range of behavior, including multiple steady-states and oscillatory behavior. The NPZ equations include terms for nutrient recycling, phytoplankton settling, benthic regeneration, and zooplankton mortality. Analysis of the equations suggests that both the nature of nitrogen loading (i.e., whether it is correlated with discharge or independent of it) and residence time are critical in determining the steady-state response of the system.  相似文献
