230Th/234U dates are presented for 26 speleothems from three areas in Britain: Assynt, N.W. Scotland; N.W. Yorkshire; Mendip Hills, Somerset. These dates suggest that speleothem growth was widespread but rare in the period from 40 to 26 Ka, absent from 26 to 15 Ka, and abundant from 15 Ka to the present. The absence of speleothems between 26 and 15 Ka is attributed to glaciation in Yorkshire and Assynt and, tentatively, to continuous permafrost development in the Mendip Hills. The occurrence of speleothems before 26 Ka places restrictions on the extent of any ice sheet which may have been present in Scotland, and indicates that N.W. Scotland was not subjected to continuous permafrost at that time.  相似文献

Detailed land cover maps provide important information for research and decision-making but are often expensive to develop and can become outdated quickly. Widespread availability of aerial photography provides increased accessibility of high-resolution imagery and the potential to produce high-accuracy land cover classifications. However, these classifications often require expert knowledge and are time consuming. Our goal was to develop an efficient, accurate technique for classifying impervious surface in urbanizing Wake County, North Carolina. Using an iterative training technique, we classified 111 nonmosaicked, very-high-resolution images using the Feature Analyst software developed by Visual Learning Systems. Feature Analyst provides object extraction classifications by analyzing spatial context in relation to spectral data to classify high-resolution imagery. Our image classification results were 95 percent accurate in impervious surface extraction, with an overall total accuracy of 92 percent. Using this method, users with relatively limited geographic information system (GIS) training and modest budgets can produce highly accurate object-extracted classifications of impervious and pervious surface that are easily manipulated in a GIS.  相似文献

In the assessment of volcanic risk, it is often assumed that magma ascending at a slow rate will erupt effusively, whereas magma ascending at fast rate will lead to an explosive eruption. Mechanistically viewed, this assessment is supported by the notion that the viscoelastic nature of magma (i.e., the ability of magma to relax at an applied strain rate), linked via the gradient of flow pressure (related to discharge rate), controls the eruption style. In such an analysis, the physical interactions between the magma and the conduit wall are commonly, to a first order, neglected. Yet, during ascent, magma must force its way through the volcanic edifice/structure, whose presence and form may greatly affect the stress field through which the magma is trying to ascend. Here, we demonstrate that fracturing of the conduit wall via flow pressure releases an elastic shock resulting in fracturing of the viscous magma itself. We find that magma fragmentation occurred at strain rates seven orders of magnitude slower than theoretically anticipated from the applied axial strain rate. Our conclusion, that the discharge rate cannot provide a reliable indication of ascending magma rheology without knowledge of conduit wall stability, has important ramifications for volcanic hazard assessment. New numerical simulations are now needed in order to integrate magma/conduit interaction into eruption models.  相似文献

Ilmenite has played an important role in the petrogenesis of lunar high-Ti picritic magmas, and armalcolite is another high-Ti oxide that was first discovered on the moon. In this study, we examined the thermodynamic stability of ilmenite and armalcolite in the context of lunar cumulate mantle overturn. Two starting compositions were explored, an ilmenite-bearing dunite (olivine + ilmenite) and an ilmenite-bearing harzburgite (olivine + orthopyroxene + ilmenite). Experiments were conducted using a 19.05 mm piston-cylinder apparatus at temperatures of 1235-1475 °C and pressures of 1-2 GPa. In runs with the ilmenite-bearing dunite mixture, ilmenite is stable in the subsolidus assemblage at least up to 1450 °C and 2 GPa. In runs with the ilmenite-bearing harzburgite starting mixture, ilmenite is stable at pressures greater than 1.4 GPa, and armalcolite is stable at lower pressures. Solidi for both starting compositions were determined, and the phase boundary between ilmenite- and armalcolite-bearing harzburgite was shown to have little dependence on temperature. During lunar cumulate overturn, sinking ilmenite formed near the end of lunar magma ocean solidification transforms into armalcolite when in contact with harzburgite cumulates at depths of less than 280 km in the lunar mantle. Inefficient overturn could leave isolated, inhomogeneously distributed pockets of armalcolite-bearing harzburgite in the upper lunar mantle, underlain by an ilmenite-bearing lower lunar mantle. These high-Ti oxide-bearing harzburgitic pockets can serve as potential sources for the generation of high-Ti magmas through partial melting or through assimilation of high-Ti minerals during transport of low-Ti picritic magmas in the lunar mantle.FeO-MgO exchange between olivine and either ilmenite or armalcolite was also examined in this study. We found the FeO-MgO distribution coefficient to be effectively independent of temperature for the pressures, temperatures, and compositions explored, with an average value of 0.179 ± 0.008 for olivine/ilmenite and 0.319 ± 0.021 for olivine/armalcolite. Given the bulk composition of an overturned lunar cumulate mantle, our measured FeO-MgO distribution coefficients can be used to estimate the Mg# of coexisting minerals in armalcolite- or ilmenite-bearing harzburgite and dunite in the overturned lunar mantle. Finally, the transformation from ilmenite-bearing harzburgite to armalcolite-bearing harzburgite results in a density increase of up to 2%. Large armalcolite-bearing cumulate bodies in the upper lunar mantle may be detectable in future lunar geophysical experiments.  相似文献

Calcium oxalate‐rich rock coatings are ubiquitous on limestone inside dry rock shelters and under bluff overhangs along canyon walls in southwestern Texas. Prehistoric pictographs occur in more than 250 such sites, and the ancient paints are encapsulated within the natural rock coating. Previous studies suggest lichens were the source of the oxalate; however, we report here that microbes cultured and isolated from samples of the coating produce oxalate in vitro. Twenty different bacteria species have been identified in samples from eight different sites, with Bacillus the most common genus, represented by five species. HPLC analyses of inoculated R2B medium after eight months of bacterial growth revealed the presence of oxalate ions in the solid phase of the growth medium. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The Ulysses flyby of Jupiter has permitted the detection of a variety of quasiperiodic magnetospheric phenomena. In this paper, Unified Radio and Plasma Wave Experiment (URAP) observations of quasiperiodic radio bursts are presented. There appear to be two preferred periods of short-term variability in the Jovian magnetosphere, as indicated by two classes of bursts, one with 40 min periodicity, the other with 15 min periodicity. The URAP radio direction determination capability provides clear evidence that the 40 min bursts originate near the southern Jovian magnetic pole, whereas the source location of the 15 min bursts remains uncertain. These bursts may be the signatures of quasiperiodic electron acceleration in the Jovian magnetosphere; however, only the 40 min bursts occur in association with observed electron bursts of similar periodicity. Both classes of bursts show some evidence of solar wind control. In particular, the onset of enhanced 40 min burst activity is well correlated with the arrival of high-velocity solar wind streams at Jupiter, thereby providing a remote monitor of solar wind conditions at Jupiter.  相似文献

Innovative micro-insurance schemes can be one tool to help African small-holder farmers cope with climate variability and change. A critical challenge for implementing such risk transfer programs, however, is helping participants understand how insurance operates, and there is evidence that farmers with a poor understanding of insurance are less likely to use it. One of the proposed tools to help farmers understand insurance is a simulation game, through which farmers can gain first-hand experience with a functioning insurance market. This paper reports on the results of experiments in Ethiopia and Malawi, investigating farmers’ understanding and the effectiveness of a role-playing game at improving that understanding. Our results suggest a generally poor understanding of basic insurance concepts, and are consistent with past results in suggesting that better understanding correlates with greater willingness to purchase it. Our results also suggest that role-playing games may be an important tool for improving understanding, but that they do not necessarily out-perform more conventional training practices.  相似文献

The case of distributed solar energy (e.g., rooftop photovoltaics) and the electricity system in the U.S. is used to develop the theory of long-term transitions in large sociotechnical systems. The study shows the advantages of analyzing sociotechnical transitions as taking place in technological fields in which advocates of different design approaches struggle for position. Over time, grassroots innovations that are connected with aspirations of local ownership tend to be displaced by better-funded models of financing supported by corporations in the financial and technology industries. The processes of blockage by the incumbents, countervailing industrial power, and incorporation and transformation (by incumbents) are developed in a field theory framework to advance the study of large technological systems in general and sustainability transitions in particular.  相似文献
