Smallholder farmers continuously confront multiple social and environmental stressors that necessitate changes in livelihood strategies to prevent damages and take advantage of new opportunities, or adaptation. Vulnerability, meaning susceptibility to harm, is attributable to social determinants that limit access to assets, leading to greater exposure and sensitivity to stressors and a limited capacity to adapt. Stressors and adaptation are intertwined because stressors deplete resources available for adaptation, while adaptation may erode resources available to respond to future stressors. We present empirical evidence demonstrating the interactions of multiple stressors and adaptations over time through a case study of indigenous farmers in highland Bolivia. We examine how farmers perceive the stress on their livelihoods, their strategies for adapting to these threats, and the influence of past adaptation and exposure on vulnerability under increasing climatic change. We find that vulnerability changes over time as multiple stressors, such as land scarcity and delayed seasonal rainfall, compound, simultaneously reducing access and demanding the expenditure of household assets for adaptation, including natural capital (water and land), human capital (including labor), and financial, physical, and social capital. To reduce vulnerability over time, constraints on access to key resources must be addressed, allowing households the flexibility to reduce their exposure and improve their adaptive capacity to the multiple stressors they confront. 相似文献

A Comparative Study of Coronal Mass Ejections with and Without Magnetic Cloud Structure near the Earth: Are All Interplanetary CMEs Flux Ropes? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An outstanding question concerning interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) is whether all ICMEs have a magnetic flux rope structure. We test this question by studying two different ICMEs, one having a magnetic cloud (MC) showing smooth rotation of magnetic field lines and the other not. The two ICMEs are chosen in such a way that their progenitor CMEs are very similar in remote sensing observations. Both CMEs originated from close to the central meridian directly facing the Earth. Both CMEs were associated with a long-lasting post-eruption loop arcade and appeared as an elliptical halo in coronagraph images, indicating a flux rope origin. We conclude that the difference in the in-situ observation is caused by the geometric selection effect, contributed by the deflection of flux ropes in the inner corona and interplanetary space. The first event had its nose pass through the observing spacecraft; thus, the intrinsic flux rope structure of the CME appeared as a magnetic cloud. On the other hand, the second event had the flank of the flux rope intercept the spacecraft, and it thus did not appear as a magnetic cloud. We further argue that a conspicuous long period of weak magnetic field, low plasma temperature, and density in the second event should correspond to the extended leg portion of the embedded magnetic flux rope, thus validating the scenario of the flank-passing. Shallow landslides are a prevalent concern in mountainous or hilly regions that can result in severe societal, economic, and environmental impacts. The challenge is further compounded as the size and location of a potential slide is often unknown. This study presents a generalized approach for the evaluation of regional shallow landslide susceptibility using an existing shallow landslide inventory, remote sensing data, and various geotechnical scenarios. The three-dimensional limit equilibrium model derived in this study uses a raster-based approach that uniquely integrates tree root reinforcement, earth pressure boundary forces, and pseudo-static seismic accelerations. Contributions of this methodology include the back-calculation of soil strength from a landslide inventory, sensitivity analyses regarding landslide size-pixel size relationships, and the determination of shallow landslide susceptibility for a landscape or infrastructure considering various root, water, and seismic conditions using lidar bare-earth DEMs as a topographic input. Using a distribution of inventoried landslide points and random points in non-landslide locales, the proposed methodology demonstrated reasonable correlation between regions of high landslide susceptibility and observed shallow landslides within a 150-km2 region of the Oregon Coast Range when the water-height ratio was 0.5. Results led to the development of a conceptual model, which describes that the presence of deep larger diameter roots in shrub areas form large open channels at deeper soil depths, facilitating deep-water percolation, while presence of thin shallow roots in grass areas form small open channels at shallow depths, causing water to remain within shallow depths. Over time these roots systems will alter their environment and facilitate storage and uptake of water and nutrient availability. The relationship between the redox ratio Fe+2/(Fe+2+Fe+3) and the K2O/(K2O + Al2O3) ratio (K2O*) were experimentally investigated in silicate melts with 78 mol% SiO2 in the system SiO2-Al2O3-K2O-FeO-Fe2O3, in air at 1,400° C. Quenched glass compositions were analyzed by electron microprobe and wet chemical microtitration techniques. Minimum values of the redox ratio were obtained at K2O*0.5. The redox ratio in peralkaline melts (K2O*>0.5) increases slightly with K2O* whereas this ratio increases dramatically in peraluminous melts (K2O*<0.5) as K2O is replaced by Al2O3. These data indicate that all Fe+3 (and Al+3) occur as tetrahedral species charge balanced with K+ in peralkaline melts. In peraluminous melts, Fe+3 (and Al+3) probably occur as both tetrahedral species using Fe+2 as a charge-balancing cation and as network-modifying cations associated with non-bridging oxygen. 相似文献

A petrogenetic grid is constructed for mineral assemblages occurring in metapelitic rocks, particularly those involved in the paragenesis of cordierite. The most useful assemblages for estimating pressures and temperatures are staurolite-cordierite, cordierite-biotite-Al2SiO5 and cordierite-hypersthene. Cordierite is stable with kyanite, sillimanite or andalusite. At high pressures cordierite is Mg-rich so that pelitic rocks typically do not contain the phase. Cordierite is stable at temperatures less than 500° C but does not commonly appear in metapelitic rocks until the garnet-chlorite, chlorite-staurolite or chlorite-Al2SiO5 tie-lines are broken. At high metamorphic grades, the assemblage garnet-hypersthene-cordierite indicates relatively low pressures, and the assemblage hypersthene-cordierite-sillimanite relatively high pressures. It is clear however, that the absence of cordierite is of little use in characterizing a metamorphic facies unless an alternate mineral assemblage can be shown to be more stable. 相似文献

Data for the cross-isobaric angle 0, the geostrophic drag coefficient Cg, and the functions A and B of Rossby number similarity theory, obtained from meteorological field experiments, are used to evaluate a range of models of the neutral, barotropic planetary boundary layer. The data give well-defined relationships for 0, Cg, and the integrated dissipation rate over the boundary layer, as a function of the surface Rossby number. Lettau's first-order closure mixing-length model gives an excellent fit to the data; other simple models give reasonable agreement. However more sophisticated models, e.g., higher-order closure, large-eddy simulation, direct numerical simulation and laboratory models, give poor fits to the data. The simplemodels have (at least) one free parameter in their turbulence closure that is matched toatmospheric observations; the more sophisticated models either base their closure onmore general flows or have no free closure parameters. It is suggested that all of theatmospheric experiments that we could locate violate the strict simplifying assumptionsof steady, homogeneous, neutral, barotropic flow required by the sophisticated models.The angle 0 is more sensitive to violations of the assumptions than is Cg.The behaviour of the data varies in three latitude regimes. In middle and high latitudes the observed values of A and B exhibit little latitudinal dependence; the best estimates are A = 1.3 and B = 4.4. In lower latitudes the neutral, barotropic Rossby number theory breaks down. The value of B increases towards the Equator; the determination of A is ambiguous – the trend can increase or decrease towards the Equator. Between approximately 5° and 30° latitude, the scatter in the data is thought to be primarily due to the inherent presence of baroclinicity. The presence of the trade-wind inversion, thermal instability and the horizontal component of the Earth's rotation H also contribute.Marked changes in the values of A and B occur in the region between the Equator andapproximately 5° latitude, as the Coriolis parameter |f| approaches zero. Although the variation of A and B with latitude suggests some similarity to the results obtained from the direct numerical simulations, the presence of additional complexities in the real atmosphere that are not included in the numerical model, precludes a meaningful direct comparison. 相似文献

Physical properties of cryptodome and remelted samples of the Mount St. Helens grey dacite have been measured in the laboratory.
The viscosity of cryptodome dacite measured by parallel–plate viscometry ranges from 10.82 to 9.94 log10
η (Pa s) (T=900–982 °C), and shrinkage effects were dilatometrically observed at T>900 °C. The viscosity of remelted dacite samples measured by the micropenetration method is 10.60–9.25 log10
η (Pa s) (T=736–802 °C) and viscosities measured by rotational viscometry are 3.22–1.66 log10
η (Pa s) (T=1298–1594 °C). Comparison of the measured viscosity of cryptodome dacitic samples with the calculated viscosity of corresponding
water-bearing melt demonstrates significant deviations between measured and calculated values. This difference reflects a
combination of the effect of crystals and vesicles on the viscosity of dacite as well as the insufficient experimental basis
for the calculation of crystal-bearing vesicular melt viscosities at low temperature. Assuming that the cryptodome magma of
the 18 May 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption was residing at 900 °C with a phenocryst content of 30 vol.%, a vesicularity of
36 vol.% and a bulk water content of 0.6 wt.%, we estimate the magma viscosity to be 1010.8 Pa s.
