The International Maritime Satellite Organization (INMARSAT) has come into being as a result of conferences by the Inter-governmental Maritime Consultative Organisation (IMCO). Its administration has been set up in London, and the organization has called for tenders for the satellites and ground stations required, and as an interim measure is arranging to use a share of the facilities of existing satellite systems. Its aim is to improve telecommunications facilities for the world's shipping and thus to reduce risks to life and property at sea, increase the efficiency of ship management, and to provide a satellite service, owned by the participating governments, that has been long in demand.  相似文献

UNCLOS is only part of intergovernmental efforts to make sense of the new circumstances offshore. The secretariats of the various UN component organs and agencies have always cooperated on the potential of the marine dimension. Plans and policies are evolving, coastal states are getting encouragement to see the sea as an aspect of foreign policy deserving regional collaboration, and a modest rationalization of global interests is taking shape, albeit slowly.  相似文献

The first results concerning the potential of hydrogen pyrolysis (hypy) as a new tool for the quantification and isolation of Black Carbon (BC) for radiocarbon analysis are reported. BC is a highly stable form of carbon, produced during pyrolysis of biomass to materials such as charcoal. Isolation and quantification of this component is therefore of great interest in radiocarbon measurement, particularly for more ancient samples, where contamination issues become more critical. Hypy has been demonstrated to reliably separate labile and refractory carbonaceous sample components for engineering and geological applications, but its potential in 14C geochronological investigation has previously been unexplored. Here, we test the hypy technique using a selection of soil standard samples and ancient charcoals from deposits of geological and archaeological significance. The results show that hypy can effectively and reproducibly isolate different carbon fractions within a variety of sample types and thus has the potential to provide a rapid and robust pre-treatment technique for radiocarbon analysis. Hypy has the additional advantage that the non-BC fraction removed from a sample can be quantitatively collected for subsequent further analysis. The technique represents a promising new approach not only for ensuring reliable decontamination of pyrogenic carbon samples prior to radiocarbon dating, but also for BC quantification in a variety of environmental matrices.  相似文献

A survey of imposex was conducted between the Bay of San Vicente, Concepción, Chile (36° 50′) and the Bay of Renocavi, Puerto Montt, Chile (41° 35′), to determine if imposex is occurring in an area of collection and cultivation of the gastropod, Chorus giganteus. Imposex was recorded in three chilean muricids C. giganteus, Xanthochorus cassidiformis and Nucella crassilabrum complex. Percentage of imposex in females sampled ranged from 0% to 100%. The degree of expression of imposex was not so severe as to elicit sterility in the individuals surveyed. Incidence of imposex was as high as 47% in areas of harvest of C. giganteus for reproductive and cultivation studies for commercial production of this species. A six percent incidence of imposex was observed in Nucella proximal to the facility for cultivation of C. giganteus. Gastropods of the genus Nucella are used in other countries to monitor incidence of imposex and have demonstrated sensitivity toward tributyltin (TBT), the associated causal agent. Since sex of individuals in muriciculture is determined by the presence or absence of a penis, imposex may lead to erroneous classification of males and females. The incidence and severity of imposex in C. giganteus and related species may have a negative impact on sustainable cultivation and harvest of gastropods in Chile.  相似文献

Nutrient additions represent an important anthropogenic stress on coastal ecosystems. At moderate levels, increased nutrients may lead to increased primary production and, possibly, to increased biomass of consumers although complex trophic interactions may modify or mask these effects. We examined the influence of nutrient additions and interactive effects of trophic interactions (predation) on benthic infaunal composition and abundances through small-scale field experiments in 2 estuaries that differed in ambient nutrient conditions. A blocked experimental design was used that allowed an assessment of direct nutrient effects in the presence and absence of predation by epibenthic predators as well as an assessment of the independent effects of predation. Benthic microalgal, production increased with experimental nutrient additions and was greater when infaunal abundances were lower, but there were no significant interactions between these factors. Increased abundances of one infaunal taxa,Laeonereis culveri, as well as the grazer feeding guild were observed with nutrient additions and a number of taxa exhibited higher abundances with predator exclusion. In contrast to results from freshwater systems there were no significant interactive effects between nutrient additions and predator exclusion as was predicted. The infaunal responses observed here emphasize the importance of both bottom-up (nutrient addition and primary producer driven) and top-down (predation) controls in structuring benthic communities. These processes may work at different spatial and temporal scales, and affect different taxa, making observation of potential interactive effects difficult.  相似文献

On March 23rd 1999 a set of TRACE (Transition Region and Coronal Explorer) observations were taken in support of Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) / TRACE Joint Observing Program 83. The program is designed to look for coronal heating mechanisms operating at high cadence and to observe their dynamical effects on coronal loop density, temperature and magnetic structure. We present here a study of 27 small, dynamic brightening events seen in this data. These events are seen in the quiet-Sun areas surrounding the active region. The data itself consists of 157 171 Å 512×512 arc sec images at 1 arc sec resolution and 9 second cadence, a previously unavailable combination of cadence, resolution and image size. Three classes of events are introduced: complex, intermediate and simple. All three classes share the property of being dynamic on small time and length scales but differ in the complexity of their behavior. We find that the brightenings across all classes exhibit variations as part of a distribution of time scales (90–400 s) peaked around 228 s. The brightenings are no more than 5 arc sec in diameter. Motions between brightenings occur on time scales from 9 to 90 s and on length scales no greater than 10 arc sec. These motions have velocities estimated to be in the range 89–174 km s?1. The position of these events in the spectrum of previously observed coronal heating events is discussed.

The ratio of oxygen-18 to oxygen-16 (expressed as per mille deviations from Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water, δ18O) is reported for seawater samples collected from seven full-depth CTD casts in the northern North Atlantic between 20° and 41°W, 52° and 60°N. Water masses in the study region are distinguished by their δ18O composition, as are the processes involved in their formation. The isotopically heaviest surface waters occur in the eastern region where values of δ18O and salinity (S) lie on an evaporation–precipitation line with slope of 0.6 in δ18O–S space. Surface isotopic values become progressively lighter to the west of the region due to the addition of 18O-depleted precipitation. This appears to be mainly the meteoric water outflow from the Arctic rather than local precipitation. Surface samples near the southwest of the survey area (close to the Charlie Gibbs Fracture Zone) show a deviation in δ18O–S space from the precipitation mixing line due to the influence of sea ice meltwater. We speculate that this is the effect of the sea ice meltwater efflux from the Labrador Sea. Subpolar Mode Water (SPMW) is modified en route to the Labrador Sea where it forms Labrador Sea Water (LSW). LSW lies to the right (saline) side of the precipitation mixing line, indicating that there is a positive net sea ice formation from its source waters. We estimate that a sea ice deficit of ≈250 km3 is incorporated annually into LSW. This ice forms further north from the Labrador Sea, but its effect is transferred to the Labrador Sea via, e.g. the East Greenland Current. East Greenland Current waters are relatively fresh due to dilution with a large amount of meteoric water, but also contain waters that have had a significant amount of sea ice formed from them. The Northeast Atlantic Deep Water (NEADW, δ18O=0.22‰) and Northwest Atlantic Bottom Waters (NWABW, δ18O=0.13‰) are isotopically distinct reflecting different formation and mixing processes. NEADW lies on the North Atlantic precipitation mixing line in δ18O–salinity space, whereas NWABW lies between NEADW and LSW on δ18O–salinity plots. The offset of NWABW relative to the North Atlantic precipitation mixing line is partially due to entrainment of LSW by the Denmark Strait overflow water during its overflow of the Denmark Strait sill. In the eastern basin, lower deep water (LDW, modified Antarctic bottom water) is identified as far north as 55°N. This LDW has δ18O of 0.13‰, making it quite distinct from NEADW. It is also warmer than NWABW, despite having a similar isotopic composition to this latter water mass.  相似文献

The earliest comprehensive plankton sampling programme in the Southern Ocean was undertaken during the early part of last century by Discovery Investigations to gain a greater scientific understanding of whale stocks and their summer feeding grounds. An initial survey was carried out around South Georgia during December 1926 and January 1927 to describe the distribution of plankton during the summer, and to serve as a baseline against which to compare future surveys. We have reanalysed phytoplankton and zooplankton data from this survey and elucidated patterns of community distribution and compared them with our recent understanding of the ecosystem based on contemporary data. Analysis of Discovery data identified five groups of stations with characteristic phytoplankton communities which were almost entirely consistent with the original analysis conducted by [Hardy A.C., Gunther, E.R., 1935. The plankton of the South Georgia whaling grounds and adjacent waters 1926-1927. Discovery Report 11, 1-456]. Major groupings were located at the western end of the island and over the northern shelf where Corethron spp. were dominant, and to the south and east where a more diverse flora included high abundances of Nitzschia seriata. Major zooplankton-station groupings were located over the inner shelf which was characterised by a high abundance of Drepanopus forcipatus and in oceanic water >500 m deep that were dominated by Foraminifera, Oithona spp., Ctenocalanus vanus, and Calanoides acutus. Stations along the middle and outer shelf regions to the north and west, were characterised by low overall abundance. There was some evidence that groupings of stations to the north of the island originated in different water masses on either side of the Southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current Front, the major frontal system in the deep ocean close to South Georgia. However, transect lines during 1926/1927 did not extend far enough offshore to sample this frontal region adequately. Interannual variability of zooplankton abundance was assessed from stations which were sampled repeatedly during seven recent British Antarctic Survey cruises (1995-2005) to the region and following taxonomic harmonization and numerical standardization (ind. m−3), a subset of 45 taxonomic categories of zooplankton (species and higher taxa) from 1926/1927, were compared with similar data obtained during the BAS cruises using a linear model. Initially comparisons were restricted to BAS stations that lay within 40 km of Discovery stations although a comparison was also made using all available data. Despite low abundance values in 1926/1927, in neither comparison did Discovery data differ significantly from BAS data. Calculation of the percentage similarity index across cruises did not reveal any systematic differences in species composition between 1926 and 1927 and the present. In the light of ocean warming trends, the existence of more subtle changes in species composition is not ruled out, but an absence of finely resolved time-series data make this impossible to determine.  相似文献

The EDdy Dynamics, mixing, Export, and Species composition (EDDIES) project provided a unique opportunity to evaluate the response of the microbial community and further understand the biological and biogeochemical consequences of mesoscale perturbation events in an oligotrophic system. In order to characterize microbial dynamics, we performed measurements of bacterial biomass (BB) and production (BP) and phytoplankton pigment analyses in two upwelling eddies in the Sargasso Sea sampled in 2004 and 2005. We also observed a 3-fold increase in BP at the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) site during the passage of a cyclonic eddy in 2003. Although the integrated BB and BP over 140 m in 2004 and 2005 eddies remained within the climatological range measured at the BATS site, there was systematic variability in bacterioplankton dynamics across both eddies. Cyclonic eddy C1 demonstrated decreased BP at the feature's center relative to its periphery, and BP was not correlated with total chlorophyll a (TChl a) variability. However, BP correlated with prymnesiophyte pigments throughout the feature. In contrast, mode-water eddy A4 showed an enhancement in BP at the eddy center (EC) relative to its edges and was coincident with elevated TChl a, high primary production measurements, and a high concentration of diatoms. In eddy A4, the tight relationship between enhanced BP, TChl a and specific phytoplankton taxa implies that the phytoplankton community structure was an important factor influencing BP variability. While the heterotrophic bacterial response in C1 and A4 was not enhanced relative to BATS summer climatology, these data and the presence of similar nutrient fields across both eddies suggest that BP and BB were influenced by the eddy perturbations and responded to changes in the phytoplankton community.  相似文献
