 A high pressure neutron powder diffraction study of portlandite [Ca(OH)2] has been performed at ISIS facility (U.K.); nine spectra have been collected increasing the pressure by steps, up to 10.9 GPa, by means of a Paris-Edinburgh cell installed on the POLARIS diffractometer. The tensorial formalism of the lagrangian finite strain theory and the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state have been used to determine, independently, two values of the bulk modulus of portlandite, obtaining K 0=38.3(±1.1) GPa [linear incompressibilities: K 0a=188.4(±9.9), K 0c=64.5(±2.5) GPa] and K 0=34.2(±1.4) GPa, respectively. The present results comply with values from previous measurements by X-ray diffraction [K 0=37.8(±1.8) GPa] and Brillouin spectroscopy [K 0=31.7(±2.5) GPa]. Reasonably, Ca(OH)2 has revealed to be bulkly softer than Mg(OH)2 [K 0=41(±2), K 0a=313, K 0c=57 GPa]. The Ca(OH)2 linear incompressibility values reflect the nature of forces acting to stabilize the (001) layer structure and, further, prove that the replacement Ca/Mg mainly affects the elastic properties in the (001) plane, rather than along the [001] direction. Calcite and aragonite have been modeled using rigid-ion, two-body Born-type potentials, supplemented by O-C-O angular terms inside the CO3 groups. A shell model has also been developed for calcite. Atomic charges, repulsive parameters and force constants have been optimized to reproduce the equilibrium crystal structures, the elastic constants and the Raman and infrared vibrational frequencies. The rigid-ion potential RIM (atomic charges:z O= -0.995e,z C = 0.985e,z Ca = 2.0e) fitted to calcite properties is able to account for those of aragonite as well. Experimental unit-cell edges, elastic constants, internal and lattice frequencies are reproduced with average relative errors of 2.1, 5.5, 2.4, 15.1% for calcite and of 0.2, 19.4, 2.5, 11.8% for aragonite, respectively. The RIM potential is suitable for thermodynamic and phase diagram simulations in the CaCO3 system, and is discussed and compared to other potentials.  相似文献

Abstract. Polychaete community structure in Valle Magnavacca, the largest basin of the Valli di Comacchio (Northern Adriatic Sea) lagoonal ecosystem, was analyzed in a three‐year study. Three shallow‐water stations were sampled at about 3‐month intervals. Univariate and multivariate analyses were utilized to investigate community structure changes in relation to natural and man‐induced disturbance. The polychaete community at station 3, in the central area of the lagoon, was the most disturbed, while that of station 2 was the most well structured. We hypothesize that polychaete community structure results from regular seasonal disturbances which lead to almost predictable fluctuations in species abundance. Superimposed on these regular cycles are acute disturbance events that further reduce species abundance or exclude species from the habitat.  相似文献

Abstract. In the Sicilian lagoon Stagnone di Marsala, Tethya aurantium and T. citrina show different ecological distributions, although some overlapping occurs. The first species reaches its highest density where linear currents are maximal, and in this habitat it is particularly frequent on Posidonia oceanica rhizomes. The second species is more abundant in still water locations and is equally common on Posidonia rhizomes and on calcareous concretions. Such distributions can be related to water movement, Posidonia shoot density, and associated factors such as sedimentation and food availability. These observations are consistent with an adaptive interpretation of the morphofunctional features distinguishing the two species.  相似文献

Many morphological elements in Cuba's landscape (e.g. marine terraces, tidal notches) demonstrate that coastal uplift has taken place, but the rate at which this occurs is not known. Carbonate phreatic overgrowths on speleothems have been found in a cave in Central North Cuba, ~1 km from the present coastline at 16 m asl. They form exceptional and unique mushroom‐shaped speleothems and balconies decorating the walls of the rooms. These phreatic overgrowths on speleothems (POS) formed at the oscillating air–water interface in sea‐level controlled anchialine lakes. U/Th dating of these overgrowths suggests ages that are compatible with the Marine Isotope Stage 5e (i.e. 130–115 ka). These POS have fixed this sea‐level highstand and demonstrate that this part of Cuba has been subjected to a much lower uplift rate than previously reported, that is, less than 0.1 mm/year since the last interglacial.  相似文献

The Atlantic margin offshore Senegal has been explored by seismic reflection and GRAV‐MAG surveys. High‐amplitude, laterally transgressive seismic reflectors are found to coincide with gravimetric and magnetic highs. Once seismic data are integrated with potential fields modelling, these reflectors can be safely interpreted as saucer‐shaped igneous sills, up to some hundreds of metres thick, some km wide. The occurrence of hydrothermal vent complexes and forced folds in the stratigraphic sequence above the sills constrain the intrusion age to the Miocene. Field observations and in‐situ magnetic susceptibility measurements of Oligocene–Miocene and Quaternary igneous rocks emplaced in coastal Senegal support this interpretation.  相似文献
