The different factors (seasonal changes) and variables (physicochemical) controlling the groundwater hydrochemistry of Kapas Island were identified using multivariate techniques principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant analysis (DA) and hierarchy cluster analysis (HCA). In the present study, the hydrochemistry of 216 groundwater samples, consisting of information concerning the in situ parameters and major ions in six monitoring boreholes, was studied and compared in two different monsoon seasons. The dominant variables derived from four components by PCA in the pre-monsoon indicated the influence of the salinity process, while the dominant variables derived from three components in the post-monsoon mostly indicated on the mineralization process. The DA gave the final variables after discriminating the insignificant variables based on the pre- and post-monsoon classifications. This provided important data reduction in terms of the mineralization process, as it only discriminated physical variables (TDS, EC, salinity, DO and temperature). Based on the HCA result, samples belonging to stations KW 3 and KW 4 were under Ca-rich water, while the remaining boreholes were grouped in Na-rich water.  相似文献

The present study research investigation is aimed to assess the groundwater quality for the urban area in Khan Younis City, southern Gaza Strip, for multi-domestic purposes. The physicochemical analysis of the groundwater wells shows the major ions in the order of Na+ > Mg2+ > Ca2+ > B3+ > K+ and Cl? > HCO3 ? > SO4 2? > NO3 2? > F? > PO4 3?. Groundwater quality is classified as very hard-brackish water type. Ninety-five percent of the wells are classified as saline water type with high NO3 2? concentrations. Based on water quality index (WQI), the groundwater falls into one of three categories: fair water (10%), poor water (15%), very poor (45%), and worst (30%). The high WQI values are because of high Na+, Cl?, SO4 2?, and NO3 2? concentrations, while synthetic pollution index (SPI) values indicate that most about 80% of the wells are seriously polluted. Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) indicates that most of data are either slightly scale forming or corrosive water or slightly corrosive but non-scale forming, and 75% of the wells are suitable for construction purposes (have SO4 2? concentrations <300 mg/L). The groundwater reaches alarming situation, where almost chemically unsuitable for drinking purposes and the water to be used after proper treatment such as desalination.  相似文献

Predicting global climate change is a great challenge and must be based on a thorough understanding of how the climate system components behave. Precipitable water vapor (PWV) is one of the key components in determining and predicting the global climate system. It is well known that the local surface temperature and pressure have a direct influence on the production of PWV. However, the influence of solar activity on atmospheric dynamics and their physical mechanisms is still an open debate, where past studies are focused at mid-latitude regions. A new method of determining and quantifying the solar influence on PWV based on GPS observations to correlate the GPS PWV and total electron content (TEC) variations is proposed. Observed data from Scott Base (SBA) and McMurdo (MCM) stations from 2003 to 2005 have been used to study the response of PWV to solar activity. In the analysis, the effects of local conditions (wind speed and relative humidity) on the distribution of PWV are investigated. Results show significant correlation between PWV and solar activity for four geomagnetic storms, with correlation coefficients of 0.74, 0.77, 0.64 and 0.69, which are all significant at the 95% confidence level. There was no significant correlation between TEC and PWV changes during the absence of storms. On a monthly analysis, a strong relationship exists between PWV and TEC during storm-affected days, with correlation coefficients of 0.83 and 0.89 (99% confidence level) for SBA and MCM respectively. These indicate a statistically significant seasonal signal in the Antarctic region, which is very active (higher) during the summer and inactive (lower) for the winter periods.  相似文献

The conjugacy effects of the GPS scintillation activities during the geomagnetic storms of October 2003, November 2003 and July 2004 have been investigated at the approximately geomagnetically conjugate stations: Scott Base, Antarctica (SBA) and Resolute Cornwallis Island (RESO) in the high Arctic region. The measurements aim at investigation of the similarities and differences of the scintillation activities occurring at the conjugate points in the polar regions under storm conditions and examine the relationship between the Storm Enhanced Density (SED) and scintillation activity. The measurements of the scintillation activities obtained from total scintillation index during these storm periods at both hemispheres showed asymmetry in the ionospheric scintillation occurrence at the conjugate points. Pronounced scintillation activity was observed at the nightside hemisphere with the total scintillation index higher than at the dayside hemisphere. The results also show that the durations of severe scintillation activity were longer at the nightside hemisphere. The measurements showed that the intense scintillation periods were corresponding to the presence of the SED events where more pronounced SED events were observed over the nightside hemisphere.  相似文献

The occurrences of extreme pollution events have serious effects on human health, environmental ecosystems, and the national economy. To gain a better understanding of this issue, risk assessments on the behavior of these events must be effectively designed to anticipate the likelihood of their occurrence. In this study, we propose using the intensity–duration–frequency (IDF) technique to describe the relationship of pollution intensity (i) to its duration (d) and return period (T). As a case study, we used data from the city of Klang, Malaysia. The construction of IDF curves involves a process of determining a partial duration series of an extreme pollution event. Based on PDS data, a generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) is used to represent its probabilistic behaviors. The estimated return period and IDF curves for pollution intensities corresponding to various return periods are determined based on the fitted GPD model. The results reveal that pollution intensities in Klang tend to increase with increases in the length of time between return periods. Although the IDF curves show different magnitudes for different return periods, all the curves show similar increasing trends. In fact, longer return periods are associated with higher estimates of pollution intensity. Based on the study results, we can conclude that the IDF approach provides a good basis for decision-makers to evaluate the expected risk of future extreme pollution events.  相似文献

It is well-versed that transport occurrence is vital for in stream rehabilitation, river restoration and installment of sediment sampler on river beds. Current practice emulates the use of continuous pre-diction using reach-averaged approach. However, prediction of transport occurrence entails the use of binary model through the execution of logistic regression analysis. Bed load and turbulence data were physically measured at mountainous region with divergent surface bedform in its presence. The para-meterization and statistical approaches are treated in the similar fashion with multiple regression except for the test for model fit and model selection criterion. The parameters on near-bed turbulence char-acteristics at the entrainment threshold were assigned as independent variables containing 15 pre-dictors. Almost 80 models were generated by selecting the best possible combination in accordance with the statistical precaution of alleviating multicollinearity issue. It is postulated that the model containing shields stress in the form of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) at vertical direction and fractional time for second quadrant provides better estimation of potential location for greatest sediment-entrainment;hence a high possibility for transport occurrence.  相似文献

Lead isotope data of sulfides and host volcanic rocks from the Bukit Botol and Bukit Ketaya deposits, the two representative deposits of the Tasik Chini volcanic‐hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposit, Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia, are reported. Lead isotope compositions of the associated sulfide minerals and volcanic rocks from the Bukit Botol deposit exhibit homogeneous and less radiogenic values (206Pb/204Pb showing a range of composition from 18.14 to 18.20, 207Pb/204Pb between 15.52 and 15.59 and 208Pb/204Pb from 37.96 to 38.35). Similarly, the Pb isotopic compositions of the host volcanic rocks from the Bukit Ketaya deposit yielded a narrow range to those of the sulfide samples (206Pb/204Pb from 18.04 to 18.20, 207Pb/204Pb between 15.43 and 15.57 and 208Pb/204Pb of 37.96 to 38.30). The uniform Pb‐isotope compositions of the sulfides in the ore horizon and the host volcanic rocks from both deposits suggest a derivation from a similar source reservoir and mineralization processes. In the framework of the tectonic model for the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia, both deposits display a range of lead isotopic compositions originated from mixing of bulk crust/juvenile arc and minor mantle sources, which are typical for VHMS deposits in an island arc–back arc setting.  相似文献

To achieve an efficient method of coastal rehabilitation, a coastal structure was applied in combination with the mangrove restoration scheme in Sungai Haji Dorani where coastal forest over-cutting associated with erosion has resulted in severe coastline retreat. Such an attempt provides the opportunity to mitigate erosion as well as improve ecological and socio-economic aspects of coastal areas, both of which are of great importance to local communities and authorities. Beach morphological changes were monitored for an eight-month period of time. The results indicate that the attempt has been successful in retaining sediment on the beach and consequently raising the elevation of the site. While the monitoring schedule is required to continue for several years to evaluate long-term performance of the rehabilitation effort, approximately 30% of the transplanted mangrove saplings' survival after eight months shows that the project was moderately successful. Since the general conditions of the selected site represent the majority of the eroded shorelines on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the method applied in this study can be replicated as an appropriate cost-effective alternative for the same cases.  相似文献
