Evaluation of BTEX Remediation by Natural Attenuation at a Coastal Facility   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Natural attenuation has emerged as a potential alternative for remediating sites contaminated with fuel hydrocarbons. This paper examines the viability of using attenuation through natural processes to remediate ground water at an industrial facility. The research combined field assessments with data analysis and modeling to evaluate plume stability and predict remediation times. Field data on natural attenuation indicate that BTEX contamination at the site is being attenuated at rates that vary within the range of 0.0001 to 0.0073/day. Stability analyses confirm that the BTEX plume has reached steady state. An analysis on mass flux showed that between 1979 and 1996, 95,000 pounds of BTEX were lost via biodegradation, while 8000 pounds were lost through other mechanisms. A first-order biodegradation rate of 0.0002/day for BTEX was obtained from the change in the total mass of dissolved BTEX with time. Cleanup times in excess of 200 years for the site were estimated using analytical modeling of natural attenuation, which agreed well with the remediation times estimated using the attenuation rates calculated for the site.  相似文献

A wide range of natural raw materials is used in the manufacture of traditional ceramic products such as ceramic tiles, frits, glazes and pigments. The chemical composition of these raw materials needs to be strictly controlled to assure end-product quality and enable the identification of the origin of defects caused by impurities or contamination. Six types of ceramic raw materials (silica sand, clays and kaolin, feldspars and related minerals, calcium and magnesium carbonates, sodium and calcium borates, and zirconium silicates) have been analysed in this study. X-ray fluorescence (XRF), potentiometry, coulometry and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) were used in this chemical characterisation. A methodology has been established for characterising each studied raw material, by identifying the chemical elements to be determined, selecting the most appropriate technique and validating each measurement. The reference materials used for validation were BCS CRM 267, 313/1, 393 and 388 (BAS), GBW 03103, GBW 07404, NIST SRM 181, 201a and 1835, Euronorm CRM 782-1 and Syenite SY-2. The results showed that most of the elements present in the geological samples used as traditional ceramic raw materials could be determined by XRF. The determination of light elements, such as lithium, fluorine and boron, is more suitably conducted by ICP-AES/AAS, potentiometry or potentiometry/ICP-AES respectively. Organic and inorganic carbon could be determined by coulometry. Inorganic carbon (CO2) could also be determined by coulometry or by thermogravimetry, if samples did not contain clay minerals. Loss on ignition was always determined by gravimetry.  相似文献

 Using lattice dynamic modelling of pure MgSiO3 clinopyroxenes, we have be able to simulate the properties of both the low-clino (P21/c) and a high-density-clino (C2/c) phases and our results are comparable with the high pressure (HP) X-ray study of these phases (Angel et al. 1992). The transition between the two phases is predicted to occur at 6GPa. The volume variation with pressure for both phases is described by a third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state with the parameters V 0 low=31.122 cm3·mol−1, K T0 low= 107.42 GPa, K′ T0 low=5.96, V 0 high=30.142 cm3·mol–1, K T0 high102.54 GPa and K′ T0  high=8.21. The change in entropy between the two modelled phases at 6GPa is ΔS 6 Gpa=−1.335 J·mol−1·K−1 and the equivalent change in volume is ΔV 6 GPa=−0.92 cm3·mol−1, from which the gradient of the phase boundary δPT is 0.0014 GPa·K−1. The variation of the bulk modulus with pressure was also determined from the modelled elastic constants and compares very well with the EOS data. The reported Lehmann discontinuity, ∼220 km depth and pressure of 7.11Gpa, has an increase in the seismic compressional wave velocity, v p , of 7.14% using the data given for PREM (Anderson 1989). At a pressure of 7GPa any phase transition of MgSiO3 pyroxene would be between ortho (Pbca) and high-clino. We find the value of v p at 7GPa, for modelled orthoenstatite (Pbca), is 8.41 km·sec−1 and that for the modelled high-clino phase at 7GPa is 8.93 km·sec−1, giving a dv p /v p of 6.18%. Carbon and nitrogen abundance and isotopic compositions, from four EH4, one EH5, five EL6 chondrites and one aubrite, were determined by using stepped pyrolysis (N only) and combustion (N and C) extractions in attempts to distinguish the components present. Carbon contents range from 0.15 to 0.70 wt%, with no systematic relationship between carbon content and meteorite group or petrologic type. Whole-rock δ13C values range from −28.5 to −4.1 %., Most C occurs as graphite and when temperature steps above 700°C are considered, there is a difference between EH4,5 (δ13C = −9.1 to -5.8%.) and EL6 chondrites (δ13C = −6.7 to +4.2%.). Carbon in Bustee aubrite is isotopically lighter (δ13C = −24%.) than in any enstatite chondrite.

Nitrogen occurs as osbornite, sinoite and in isostructural substitution for oxygen in silicate lattice sites. Nitrogen abundances and isotopic compositions are more variable than C, due to the heterogenous distribution of N-bearing minerals. Three EL6's containing osbornite have higher N concentrations than other type 6 enstatite chondrites. Sinoite, where present, is depleted in 15N relative to osbornite. Nitrogen in the Bustee aubrite has a similar abundance and δ15N value to those of EL6's, again dominated by the presence of osbornite.

In addition to the refractory C-and N-bearing minerals there is also organic material (largely terrestrial contamination) and evidence for at least two “exotic” components. The first is a host for Xe (HL) and is characterized by δ13C <-−47%. and δ15N ≤−73%., whereas the second is less well-defined, but is marked by δ15N = +269%.  相似文献

Measurements of velocity and density profiles were used to describe the tidal and mean flow structure across and along a sill in Refugio Channel, a fjord-like inlet in Southern Chile (43.9°S). These are the first oceanographic measurements of any kind effected in Refugio Channel. Current profiles were obtained with a 307.2-kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler during two semidiurnal cycles along a repeated triangular circuit. Two along-channel transects formed the sides of the triangle that crossed the sill and were identified as the western and eastern transects. One cross-channel transect, the base of the triangle, was located on the seaward side of the sill. Density profiles were obtained at the corners of the triangle. The longitudinal mean flow in the western transect showed a two-layer exchange structure over the landward side of the sill. The structure of net seaward flow at the surface and landward flow at depth was disrupted by the sill in such a way that over the seaward side of the sill, only seaward flow was observed throughout the water column. This likely resulted from the blocking of landward net flow by the sill. In the eastern transect, two-layer exchange dominated over most of the transect and was consistent with the observed density profiles. Over the seaward side of the sill, a surface layer, ∼10m deep, flowed landward as a third layer. This feature should have been caused by river input further seaward (to the north) and produced a surface convergence region over the sill. In terms of tidal flows, the greatest tidal current amplitudes were 40cm s−1 over the sill as the flow accelerated through the reduced cross-sectional area of the channel. Observations of water surface elevation (WSE) and bathymetry of the lagoons and cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula (YP) in southeast Mexico are of hydrogeological interest. Observations of WSE (orthometric water height above mean sea level, amsl) are required to inform hydrological models, to estimate hydraulic gradients and groundwater flow directions. Measurements of bathymetry and water depth (elevation of the water surface above the bed of the water body) improve current knowledge on how lagoons and cenotes connect through the complicated submerged cave systems and the diffuse flow in the rock matrix. A novel approach is described that uses unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to monitor WSE and bathymetry of the inland water bodies on the YP. UAV-borne WSE observations were retrieved using a radar and a global navigation satellite system on-board a multi-copter platform. Water depth was measured using a tethered floating sonar controlled by the UAV. This sonar provides depth measurements also in deep and turbid water. Bathymetry (wet-bed elevation amsl) can be computed by subtracting water depth from WSE. Accuracy of the WSE measurements is better than 5–7 cm and accuracy of the water depth measurements is estimated to be ~3.8% of the actual water depth. The technology provided accurate measurements of WSE and bathymetry in both wetlands (lagoons) and cenotes. UAV-borne technology is shown to be a more flexible and lower cost alternative to manned aircrafts. UAVs allow monitoring of remote areas located in the jungle of the YP, which are difficult to access by human operators.  相似文献

The conventional approach in the design of laterally loaded piles with rectangular cross section involves the simplification of converting the rectangular cross section of the pile to an equivalent circular cross section. An analysis to determine the response of laterally loaded rectangular or circular piles in elastic soil is presented in which this simplification is not required. The analysis is based on the solution of differential equations governing the displacements of the pile–soil system derived using energy principles. The pile geometry and the elastic constants of the soil and pile are the input parameters to the analysis. Using this analysis, comparisons are made between the response of rectangular and circular piles in elastic soil. Based on the proposed solution scheme, a user-friendly spreadsheet program (LATPAXL) was developed that can be used to perform the analysis. In addition, simple equations obtained by regression analysis of the pile head deflection and bending moment profiles are proposed. Examples illustrate the use of the analysis.  相似文献

Recent neo-liberal policy frameworks in Australia advocate economic development opportunities for Aboriginal Australians as a viable strategy to redress the marginalisation and social disadvantage that appear to characterise many Aboriginal communities. In New South Wales (NSW), Aboriginal peoples are currently negotiating with industry for the chance to participate in coal seam gas (CSG) development opportunities. Based upon research focusing on CSG development in the Northern NSW region, this paper argues that certain constructions of Aboriginality inhibit successful Aboriginal engagement with the economic opportunities provided by CSG. This paper illuminates the role of the media in facilitating dominant discourse about Aboriginality and the implications of those constructions for Aboriginal engagement with the mainstream economy. Findings demonstrate that the media are complicit in constructing Aboriginal peoples in a way that could prejudice their attempts to engage in economic opportunities that do not align with the dominant constructions of Aboriginality.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Currently the increase in the variety and volume of data sources is demanding new data analytical workflows for exploring them concurrently, especially if the goal is to detect spatial outliers. In this paper, we propose a data analytical workflow for exploring Call Detail Records in conjunction with geotagged tweets. The aim was to investigate how massive data point observations can be analyzed to detect spatial outliers in collective mobility patterns that are coupled with social ties. This workflow consists of analytical tasks that are developed based on the a-priori assumption of two isometric spaces where Natural Language Processing techniques are used to find spatial clusters from geotagged tweets in a Social Space which are later used to aggregate the Call Detail Records generated by antennas located in the Mobility Space. The dynamic weighted centroids that are given by the mean location of the number of calls per hour of all antennas that belong to a particular cluster are used to compute Standard Deviation Ellipses. The longer the period of time a weighted centroid stays outside of the 99.7% probability region of an ellipse, the highest the likelihood that they are spatial outliers. The workflow was implemented for the city of Dakar in Senegal. The results indicate that the further the hourly weighted centroids are skewed from the normal mean of an ellipse, the stronger the influence of a cluster is in finding spatial outliers. Furthermore, the longer the period of time the outliers stays outside of the 99.7% probability region of an ellipse, the highest the likelihood that the outliers are genuine and can be associated to extraordinary events such as natural disasters and national holidays.  相似文献
