Microbial availability and degradation rates of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) were estimated at two coastal stations (Horsens Fjord and Darss Sill) in Denmark, by measuring the decrease in DOC and DON concentrations during long-term laboratory incubations (150 days). The experiments used two different treatments: one only receiving a microbial inoculum and another additionally to the inoculum, carbon and phosphate to ensure nitrogen limitation. The additions of carbon and phosphate led to increased DON bioavailability in all experiments. The incubations showed that bioavailable DOC (BDOC) accounted for 22 ± 13% of total DOC in Horsens Fjord and 14 ± 5% at Darss Sill. Bioavailable DON (BDON) accounted for 43 ± 10% (Horsens Fjord) and 28 ± 12% of DON (Darss Sill). The linear relations between BDOM and DOM suggested that the DOC variations in Horsens Fjord were controlled by the available fraction, while this was only partly the case for DOC at Darss Sill and DON (both stations), showing that the refractory pool to some degree controlled the seasonal variations in DOM at these coastal stations. Additionally we found that DOC and DON were cycled at approximately the same speed, probably due to a high carbon demand of the microbial community. Calculating the amounts of DON degraded within the two areas using the obtained decay rates showed that compared with the ambient inorganic nitrogen levels BDON contained a large proportion (52 ± 37%, Horsens Fjord and 74 ± 19%, Darss Sill) of the bioavailable nitrogen (BDON + DIN). These calculations further suggested that bioavailable DOM was washed out of the respective areas and could contribute to heterotrophic growth in adjacent waters.  相似文献

Work reported in this paper suggests that there are cases of contamination of soil and water samples by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) from paper and plastic packaging. Soil samples, which have been stored in paper bags for more than 20 years, share a similar congener distribution as the bags. Analyses showed a predominance of light congeners. PCB-analyses of water also indicate that water samples could be contaminated by plastic packaging. All analytical results of solid material packaging, as well as soil stored in the packaging, show a high relative amount of light weight PCB congeners. The paper bags that were analysed are made of strong paper and very popular among geochemists because of their watertight quality. These paper bags were manufactured more than 20 years ago. The plastic packaging that was analysed was produced in 1997 and 2008. The analyses of plastic and paper show that the raw material that has been used in the production at different times contains a wide concentration range of PCB. Re-sealable plastic bags, which contained the highest levels of PCB of the plastic material, are used by researchers world-wide as sampling bags for soils and sediments. This paper raises an important issue that packaging may potentially contaminate the samples that they hold.  相似文献

Direct dating of fossil coral reefs using the U-series chronometer provides an important independent test of the Milankovitch orbital forcing theory of climate change. However, well-dated fossil corals pre-dating the last interglacial period (>130 thousand years ago; ka) are scarce due to, (1) a lack of sampling localities, (2) insufficient analytical precision in U-series dating methods, and (3) diagenesis which acts to violate the assumption of closed-system U-series isotopic decay in fossil corals. Here we present 50 new high-precision U-series age determinations for fossil corals from Henderson Island, an emergent coral atoll in the central South Pacific. U-series age determinations associated with the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 9 interglacial and MIS 7.5 interstadial periods are reported. The fossil corals show relatively little open-system U-series behaviour in comparison to other localities with fossil coral reefs formed prior to the last glacial cycle, however, open-system U-series behaviour is still evident in most of the dated corals. In particular, percent-level shifts in the [230Th/238U]act composition are observed, leading to conventional U-series ages that are significantly younger or older than the true sample age. This open-system U-series behaviour is not accounted for by any of the open-system U-series models, indicating that new models should be derived. The new U-series ages reported here support and extend earlier findings reported in Stirling et al. (2001), providing evidence of prolific coral reef development on Henderson Island at ∼320 ka, most likely correlated with MIS 9.3, and subsequent reef development at ∼307 ka during MIS 9.1, while relative sea-level was potentially ∼20 m lower than during MIS 9.3. The U-series ages for additional well-preserved fossil corals are suggestive of minor reef development on Henderson Island during MIS 7.5 (245-230 ka) at 240.3 ± 0.8 and 234.7 ± 1.3 ka. All U-series observations are consistent with the Milankovitch theory of climate change, in terms of the timing of onset and termination of the dated interglacial and interstadial periods. The best preserved samples also suggest that the oceanic 234U/238U during MIS 9 and MIS 7.5 was within five permil of the modern open ocean composition.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a method for the characterization of naturally fractured reservoirs by quantitative integration of seismic and production data. The method is based on a consistent theoretical frame work to model both effective hydraulic and elastic properties of fractured porous media and a (non‐linear) Bayesian method of inversion that provides information about uncertainties as well as mean (or maximum likelihood) values. We model a fractured reservoir as a porous medium containing a single set of vertical fractures characterized by an unknown fracture density, azimuthal orientation and aperture. We then look at the problem of fracture parameter estimation as a non‐linear inverse problem and try to estimate the unknown fracture parameters by joint inversion of seismic amplitude versus angle and azimuth data and dynamic production data. Once the fracture parameters have been estimated the corresponding effective stiffness and permeability tensors can be estimated using consistent models. A synthetic example is provided to clearly explain and test the workflow. It shows that seismic and production data complement each other, in the sense that the seismic data resolve a non‐uniqueness in the fracture orientation and the production data help to recover the true fracture aperture and permeability, because production data are more sensitive to the fracture aperture than the seismic data.  相似文献

Abstract

The Mesozoic igneous rocks from the External Zones of the Betic Cordilleras extend for some 300 km along the Subbetic Zone. They are poorly differentiated basic rocks which, altogether, correspond to a transitional series containing tholeiitic and sodium-alkaline terms. They crop out as small ophite stocks and dykes intruded into middle- and upper-Triassic rocks, or as submarine flows and sills interlayered with Jurassic materials.

Geological and radiometric evidence points to an upper-Triassic-Liassic age for the ophite-generating magmatism, while the fissure volcanism began locally in the early-Liassic and extended throughout the Dogger. It reached its climax in the Tithonian and ceased abruptly in the lowermost Cretaceous.

The magmas that generated the two groups of rocks originated within the mantle. During the ascent through a continental crust they were contaminated by deep-crust granitoid rocks and by the assimilation of pelites from the basement. The chemical composition and fractional-crystallization differentiation trends of the ophites belong to the tholeiitic series, while those of the middle-uppermost Jurassic magmas to the sodic-alkaline series. This magmatic evolution may be attributed to a geodynamic change from distensive in the Triassic to transtensive from the middle-Jurassic onwards.  相似文献

Particles of silt and clay may form large, low density floes when suspended in salt water. The sediment floes have settling velocities much higher than the single small particles constituting them and therefore, the flocculation process may strongly influence the transport of cohesive sediment in estuarine environments. will be described in this paper, the field settling velocities of suspended sediment were investigated in a large tidal channel with tidal current velocities up to 1.3 m/s and depths of about 10 m. The analyses of suspended sediment were made on both bottom and surface samples. For the bottom samples, equivalent median fall diameters in the range 26–98 μm were measured. For surface samples, the range was 15–40 μm. During most of the tidal period, the occurrence of much larger settling diameters near the bottom was due to the suspension of individual sand and silt particles. For the investigated periods, high-tide was the only possible time to observe flocculation influencing the vertical distribution of finegrained sediment in the water column.  相似文献

Shifting cultivation is often blamed for deforestation in tropical upland areas. Based on a case study of three villages in northern Lao PDR, this paper combines household surveys with a remote sensing based analysis of forest cover, covering the period 1989–1999, in order to analyse changes in shifting cultivation practices and livelihood strategies and the impact of these on deforestation. Due to population pressure and relocation of villages, easily accessed land is increasingly scarce and fallow periods have been shortened during the 1990s. A net annual deforestation of about 1% was found in the area during the study period. This deforestation rate reflects shorter fallow periods in secondary forests rather than encroachment on mature forests, which are not used for cultivation by the farmers in the three villages. Farmers rate scarce labour as a major constraint on shifting cultivation; nonetheless, a tendency towards lower labour input with shorter fallow periods is observed, contradicting conventional intensification theory. Livelihoods are diversifying through the establishment of plantations, cultivation of wet rice and adoption of animal husbandry, but given the socio-economic conditions in the area, shifting cultivation is likely to remain the most suitable farming system in the near future.  相似文献

In this work, we assess the use of explicit methods for estimating the effective conductivity of anisotropic fractured media. Explicit methods are faster and simpler to use than implicit methods but may have a more limited range of validity. Five explicit methods are considered: the Maxwell approximation, the T‐matrix method, the symmetric and asymmetric weakly self‐consistent methods, and the weakly differential method, where the two latter methods are novelly constructed in this paper. For each method, we develop simplified expressions applicable to flat spheroidal “penny‐shaped” inclusions. The simplified expressions are accurate to the first order in the ratio of fracture thickness to fracture diameter. Our analysis shows that the conductivity predictions of the methods fall within known upper and lower bounds, except for the T‐matrix method at high fracture densities and the symmetric weakly self‐consistent method when applied to very thin fractures. Comparisons with numerical results show that all the methods give reliable estimates for small fracture densities. For high fracture densities, the weakly differential method is the most accurate if the fracture geometry is non‐percolating or the fracture/matrix conductivity contrast is small. For percolating conductive fracture networks, we have developed a scaling relation that can be applied to the weakly self‐consistent methods to give conductivity estimates that are close to the results from numerical simulations.  相似文献

Attempts have previously been made to predict anisotropic permeability in fractured reservoirs from seismic Amplitude Versus Angle and Azimuth data on the basis of a consistent permeability‐stiffness model and the anisotropic Gassmann relations of Brown and Korringa. However, these attempts were not very successful, mainly because the effective stiffness tensor of a fractured porous medium under saturated (drained) conditions is much less sensitive to the aperture of the fractures than the corresponding permeability tensor. We here show that one can obtain information about the fracture aperture as well as the fracture density and orientation (which determines the effective permeability) from frequency‐dependent seismic Amplitude Versus Angle and Azimuth data. Our workflow is based on a unified stiffness‐permeability model, which takes into account seismic attenuation by wave‐induced fluid flow. Synthetic seismic Amplitude Versus Angle and Azimuth data are generated by using a combination of a dynamic effective medium theory with Rüger's approximations for PP reflection coefficients in Horizontally Transversely Isotropic media. A Monte Carlo method is used to perform a Bayesian inversion of these synthetic seismic Amplitude Versus Angle and Azimuth data with respect to the parameters of the fractures. An effective permeability model is then used to construct the corresponding probability density functions for the different components of the effective permeability constants. The results suggest that an improved characterization of fractured reservoirs can indeed be obtained from frequency‐dependent seismic Amplitude Versus Angle and Azimuth data, provided that a dynamic effective medium model is used in the inversion process and a priori information about the fracture length is available.  相似文献

The subject of this paper is the treatment of rocks - and, especially, fluid-saturated and partially saturated reservoir rocks, as composite visco-elastic media. By this we mean to study and partially answer the question of how the effective material (frequency-dependent and complex-valued stiffness/density) parameters can be estimated from a knowledge of the constituents of the rocks, their volume fractions, the statistical distribution of sizes, shapes, orientations and positions of the individual particles (minerals of quartz, clay, etc.) and cavities (pores, cracks, etc.); in addition to parameters related to the fluid and its ability to flow, at the scale of the microstructure as well as that of the wavelength (assumed to be long compared to the scale-size of the microstructure).Our approach is to develop and combine a theory of stochastic waves with established results for the micromechanics of defects in solids, as well as state-of-the-art models of wave-induced fluid flow. Specifically, we first derive an exact formal expression for the effective material parameters in terms of a dynamic T-matrix for the material, which satisfies a single integral equation of the Lippmann-Schwinger type (known from quantum scattering theory), but formulated in an abstract vector space, associated with the combination of the strain and velocity fields into a more general state vector . Inclusions-based models are developed on the basis of standard many-body techniques, known from the static T-matrix approach as well as nuclear collision theory. The t-matrix of a low-aspect-ratio spheroidal crack is expressed in terms of the familiar displacement discontinuity parameters of Hudson, via the so-called K-tensor, which is of interest in itself, for example, when connecting cracks to pores (in the presence of multiple solid constituents) on the basis of an expression for the t-matrix of a communicating cavity.The present theory can in principle be used beyond the Rayleigh limit, but explicit estimates of the effective material parameters have so far been derived only under the assumption that (scattering attenuation can be ignored) the wavelength is large compared to the scale-size of a representative volume element. Starting with the dynamic equations of motion, we show that the behaviour of the mean wave in the Rayleigh limit is indeed determined by the effective stiffness tensor associated with a static theory of composites, in conjunction with the spatially averaged density for the heterogeneous material as a whole. Thus, we have provided justification to the procedure we used in a series of related papers, where we started out with the static equilibrium condition and employed the elastic/visco-elastic correspondence principle. Numerical examples (dealing with the effects of randomly oriented cracks on the isotropic velocity and attenuation spectra of a dual porosity model of clay-sand mixtures, and the effects of spatial distribution on the anisotropic attenuation spectra of fully aligned cracks that are partially saturated with two different fluids) will be provided in order to complement those in our earlier papers.  相似文献
