Summary The Córrego Bom Sucesso alluvial deposit near Serro, Minas Gerais, probably provided the specimens from which the element palladium was first discovered. Its Pt–Pd nuggets are characteristically botryoidal, arborescent and coralloidal, and exhibit an external halo with the composition of palladiferous platinum to virtually pure platinum. X-ray mapping of an arborescent Pt–Pd nugget from the historical occurrence documents selective palladium depletion, similar to the high-fineness gold haloes developed on detrital Au–Ag grains under supergene conditions. The Pd-depleted alteration zone truncates inclusions of crystals stoichiometrically close to PdPt within the Pt–Pd aggregate. Selective metal leaching in the weathering environment can account for the frequently observed Pt-enriched rims on alluvial platiniferous alloys which may lead to the formation of platinum nuggets at an advanced degree of weathering. The mineralogy of natural ferromanganese coatings on quartz grains and the crystal chemistry of associated trace elements Ni, Zn, Ba, and As were characterized by X-ray microfluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and EXAFS spectroscopy. Fe is speciated as ferrihydrite and Mn as vernadite. The two oxides form alternating Fe- and Mn-rich layers that are irregularly distributed and not always continuous. Unlike naturally abundant Fe-vernadite, in which Fe and Mn are mixed at the nanoscale, the ferrihydrite and vernadite are physically segregated and the trace elements clearly partitioned at the microscopic scale. Vernadite consists of two populations of interstratified one-water layer (7 Å phyllomanganate) and two-water layer (10 Å phyllomanganate) crystallites. In one population, 7 Å layers dominate, and in the other 10 Å layers dominate. The three trace metals Ni, Zn, and Ba are associated with vernadite and the metalloid As with ferrihydrite. In vernadite, nickel is both substituted isomorphically for Mn in the manganese layer and sorbed at vacant Mn layer sites in the interlayer. The partitioning of Ni is pH-dependent, with a strong preference for the first site at circumneutral pH and for the second at acidic pH. Thus, the site occupancy of Ni in vernadite may be an indicator of marine vs. continental origin, and in the latter, of the acidity of streams, lakes, or soil pore waters in which the vernadite formed. Zinc is sorbed only in the interlayer at vacant Mn layer sites. It is fully tetrahedral at a Zn/Mn molar ratio of 0.0138, and partly octahedral at a Zn/Mn ratio of 0.1036 consistent with experimental studies showing that the VIZn/IVZn ratio increases with Zn loading. Barium is sorbed in a slightly offset position above empty tetrahedral cavities in the interlayer. Arsenic tetrahedra are retained at the ferrihydrite surface by a bidentate-binuclear attachment to two adjacent iron octahedra, as commonly observed. Trace elements in ferromanganese precipitates are partitioned at a few, well-defined, crystallographic sites that have some elemental specificity, and thus selectivity. The relative diversity of sorption sites contrasts with the simplicity of the layer structure of vernadite, in which charge deficit arises only from Mn4+ vacancies (i.e., no Mn3+ for Mn4+ substitution). Therefore, sorption mechanisms primarily depend on physical and chemical properties of the sorbate and competition with other ions in solution, such as protons at low pH for Ni sorption.  相似文献

This paper investigates the equity implications of marketing ecosystem services in protected areas and rural communities. We use a three-tiered equity framework to analyse four distinct efforts to commercialise watershed recharge and carbon dioxide fixation by forests in Meso-America. We show that project development and participation are strongly mediated by organisational networks, as well as existing rights of access over land and forest resources. We demonstrate that procedural fairness diverges strongly when initiatives are implemented in protected areas or in rural communities. While in the former reserve managers and intermediaries concentrate all decision-making power, initiatives working with rural communities are able to integrate more significantly service providers in management decisions. Marketing ecosystem services in protected areas contributes to reduce expenditure rates for protected area management, but also results in less equitable outcomes, as rural communities and forest resource users become excluded from receiving sustained development benefits. When ecosystem services are commercialised by rural farmers, payments do not cover opportunity costs but act as a significant incentive for participation in most cases. Ecosystem service providers also benefit from complementary project activities, such as forest management training and agricultural extension support. We argue that limited economic impact and existing inequities in decision-making and outcomes can be explained by problems of institutional design, in particular the inability of markets and payments for ecosystem services to account for context-related factors, such as property rights.  相似文献

We incorporate a maximum entropy image reconstruction technique into the process of modelling the time-dependent geomagnetic field at the core–mantle boundary (CMB). In order to deal with unconstrained small lengthscales in the process of inverting the data, some core field models are regularized using a priori quadratic norms in both space and time. This artificial damping leads to the underestimation of power at large wavenumbers, and to a loss of contrast in the reconstructed picture of the field at the CMB. The entropy norm, recently introduced to regularize magnetic field maps, provides models with better contrast, and involves a minimum of a priori information about the field structure. However, this technique was developed to build only snapshots of the magnetic field. Previously described in the spatial domain, we show here how to implement this technique in the spherical harmonic domain, and we extend it to the time-dependent problem where both spatial and temporal regularizations are required. We apply our method to model the field over the interval 1840–1990 from a compilation of historical observations. Applying the maximum entropy method in space—for a fit to the data similar to that obtained with a quadratic regularization—effectively reorganizes the magnetic field lines in order to have a map with better contrast. This is associated with a less rapidly decaying spectrum at large wavenumbers. Applying the maximum entropy method in time permits us to model sharper temporal changes, associated with larger spatial gradients in the secular variation, without producing spurious fluctuations on short timescales. This method avoids the smearing back in time of field features that are not constrained by the data. Perspectives concerning future applications of the method are also discussed.  相似文献

Kerosene, a grade mineral oil, is commonly used to extract beetles from sediment. Here, the use of kerosene to extract chironomid head capsules was tested on 10 samples from sediment of different lakes, with different organic matter content as measured by loss on ignition, and estimated ages. Our results revealed that this flotation tool is very effective in extracting either full or half chironomid head capsules. The mean extraction efficiency was 89.3 ± 8.0% with an estimated relative abundance error ranging from −1% to 1% for 46 of the 57 identified taxa. Larger chironomids (400–500 μm width), which are often full of sediment particles, have the highest relative abundance error, with a maximum of 4.3% for Corynocera oliveri-type. A canonical correspondence analysis showed that, despite this small bias, samples retrieved with the kerosene flotation do not differ from the whole sample assemblages. These results give us confidence in the use of this flotation technique for chironomid sample preparation.  相似文献

The IGN digital camera project was established in the early 1990s. The first research surveys were carried out in 1996 and the digital camera was first used in production in 2000. In 2004 approximately 10 French departments (accounting for 10% of the territory) were covered with a four-head camera system and since summer 2005 all IGN imagery has been acquired digitally. Nevertheless the camera system is still evolving, with tests on new geometric configurations being continuously undertaken. The progressive integration of the system in IGN production workflows has allowed IGN to keep the system evolving in accordance with production needs. Remaining problems are due to specific camera characteristics such as CCD format, the optical quality of off-the-shelf lenses, and because some production tools are ill-adapted to digital images with a large dynamic range. However, when considering the pros and cons of integrating these images into production lines, the disadvantages are largely balanced by the numerous benefits this technology offers.  相似文献

There have been many studies devoted to trace metals and their value in assessing the paleoredox conditions of ancient marine deposition. Among them, molybdenum (Mo) is frequently cited as an effective proxy for sediments and sedimentary rocks. Recently, Helz et al. (Helz, G.R., Miller, C.V., Charnock, J.M., Mosselmans, J.L.W., Pattrick, R.A.D., Garner, C.D., Vaughan, D.J., 1996. Mechanisms of molybdenum removal from the sea and its concentration in black shales: EXAFS evidences. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta, 60, 3631-3642) and Adelson et al. (Adelson, J. M., Helz, G. R., Miller, C. V., 2001. Reconstructing the rise of recent coastal anoxia; molybdenum in Chesapeake Bay sediments. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta, 65, 237-252.) suggested that Mo does not behave conservatively in the water column when H2S reaches a threshold concentration. Above this concentration, a “switch” operates, and Mo is scavenged by forming bonds with metal-rich (notably iron) particles, sulfur-rich organic molecules and pyrite. In this paper, Mo-trapping by sulfur-rich organic matter (OM) in ancient marine deposits is emphasized. The following Mesozoic geological formations were selected for study because of their relatively high concentration of sulfurized OM: the Akkuyu Formation (Turkey), the Calcaires d'Orbagnoux (France) and Kimmeridge Clay (UK) and its timeequivalent in Boulonnais (France), the Kashpir oil shales (Russia), and the La Luna Formation (Venezuela). The sulfur-rich OM is identified by either measured organic-S abundance or kerogen microscope observation. Our results show that Mo is systematically more enriched relative to the other redox-sensitive/sulfide-forming elements studied (U, V, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cr), and Mo enrichment is positively correlated with the amount of sulfurized OM but not with pyrite abundance. These results illuminate the role played by sulfurized OM in geologic-scale Mo capture and retention, but they also underline the role played by reactive iron. Significant OM sulfurization is only possible when reactive iron is limited. Nevertheless, pyrite formation, though limited, could act as an initial Mo trap, prior to Mo uptake by OM that is sulfurized after the pyritization step. In future paleoenvironmental reconstructions, attention must be paid to this enhanced Mo enrichment in the presence of sulfurized organic matter. In such cases, the use of Mo could lead to overestimation of the reducing conditions of the depositional environment.  相似文献

A geophysical survey in the eastern Gulf of Aden, between the Alula–Fartak (52°E) and the Socotra (55°E) transform faults, was carried out during the Encens–Sheba cruise. The conjugate margins of the Gulf are steep, narrow and asymmetric. Asymmetry of the rifting process is highlighted by the conjugate margins (horst and graben in the north and deep basin in the south). Two transfer fault zones separate the margins into three segments, whereas the present‐day Sheba Ridge is divided into two segments by a transform discontinuity. Therefore segmentation of the Sheba Ridge and that of the conjugate margins did coincide during the early stages of oceanic spreading. Extensive magma production is evidenced in the central part of the western segment. Anomaly 5d was identified in the northern and southern parts of the oceanic basin, thus confirming that seafloor spreading in this part of Gulf of Aden started at least 17.6 Ma ago.  相似文献
