The period study of the eclipsing binary DF Hya, based on up-to-date minima has been presented. The least-squares method has been applied to obtain a new period, which comes out to be 0 . d 3306017. Period changes are found around the years 1949, 1974, and 1982. Appreciable period changes are apparent around 1949 and 1974, the strongest being around 1974. The period changes (P) range from 0.46×10–6 d to 0.46×10–5 d, the average being 1.89×10–6 d. Such period changes are usual for a contact system, like DF Hya. Our results do not show increase in the time interval 1959–1985 as suggested by Zhanget al. (1989).  相似文献

The thermal convection instability of a two component fluid layer subjected to a temperature gradient has been studied in the presence of an applied magnetic field. The associated thermal diffusion separation has a predominant effect even when the separations are small. Solutions for the non-oscillatory marginal states have been obtained. It is shown that the concentration gradient has a stabiliting or destabilizing effect according as T<or>0. Approximate solutions for the oscillatory solutions have been obtained by the method of variational principle and the dispersion relation has been solved numerically.  相似文献

Non-linear effects on the stability of the Screw Pinch in cylindrical system surrounded by a uniform pitch magnetic field in an incompressible pressureless plasma have been studied. A linear dispersion relation governing the stability of interface has been obtained with the help of normal mode analysis. Perturbation technique has been used to obtain the non-linear Schrödinger equation for the time variation of amplitudeA(t) which evolves according to . This can lead to non-linear stabilization, explosive instability or eventual decay, depending on the sign of . The whole calculations have been made form=1, kink modes in a sharp boundary plasma pinch. Non-linear analysis for -pinch (0) andz-pinch () have also been discussed in detail. The amplitude and phase values of the diurnal variations of the total magnetic field on the east coast of Canada were obtained from short time recordings over a four year period. The results show a decrease in amplitude and increase in phase of the variations at a station located near the continental margin relative to those at a coastal station, contrary to the expected ocean edge effect.  相似文献

Analysis of stability of earthen dams in kachchh region, Gujarat, India   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The Kachchh region of Gujarat, India bore the brunt of a disastrous earthquake of magnitude Mw = 7.6 that occurred on January 26, 2001. The major cause of failure of various structures including earthen dams was noted to be the presence of liquefiable alluvium in the foundation soil. Results of back-analysis of failures of Chang, Tappar, Kaswati and Rudramata earth dams using pseudo-static limit equilibrium approach presented in this paper confirm that the presence of liquefiable layer contributed to lesser factors of safety leading to a base type of failure that was also observed in the field. Following the earthquake, earth dams have been rehabilitated by the concerned authority and it is imperative that the reconstructed sections of earth dams be reanalyzed. It is also increasingly realized that risk assessment of dams in view of the large-scale investment made and probabilistic analysis is necessary. In this study, it is demonstrated that the probabilistic approach when used in conjunction with deterministic approach helps in providing a rational solution for quantification of safety of the dam and in the estimation of risk associated with the dam construction.  相似文献

Increasing concentrations of CO2 and other greenhouse gases (GHG) in the Earth's atmosphere have the potential to enhance the natural greenhouse effect, which may result in climatic changes. The main anthropogenic contributors to this increase are fossil fuel combustion, land use conversion, and soil cultivation. It is clear that overcoming the challenge of global climate change will require a combination of approaches, including increased energy efficiency, energy conservation, alternative energy sources, and carbon (C) capture and sequestration. The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is sponsoring the development of new technologies that can provide energy and promote economic prosperity while reducing GHG emissions. One option that can contribute to achieving this goal is the capture and sequestration of CO2 in geologic formations. An alternative approach is C sequestration in terrestrial ecosystsems through natural processes. Enhancing such natural pools (known as natural sequestration) can make a significant contribution to CO2 management strategies with the potential to sequester about 290 Tg C/y in U.S. soils. In addition to soils, there is also a large potential for C sequestration in above and belowground biomass in forest ecosystems.A major area of interest to DOE's fossil energy program is reclaimed mined lands, of which there may be 0.63 ×106 ha in the U.S. These areas are essentially devoid of soil C; therefore, they provide an excellent opportunity to sequester C in both soils and vegetation. Measurement of C in these ecosystems requires the development of new technology and protocols that are accurate and economically viable. Field demonstrations are needed to accurately determine C sequestration potential and to demonstrate the ecological and aesthetic benefits in improved soil and water quality, increased biodiversity, and restored ecosystems.The DOE's research program in natural sequestration highlights fundamental and applied studies, such as the development of measurement, monitoring, and verification technologies and protocols and field tests aimed at developing techniques for maximizing the productivity of hitherto infertile soils and degraded ecosystems.  相似文献

Numerous studies have been carried out during last 20-25 years by different agencies to trace the courses of palaeo river Sarasvati. Varying number of courses of river Sarasvati have been suggested by the different workers in the north-western region. Taking advantage of the developments in satellite/ sensor and digital image processing technologies an attempt has been made to rediscover the course of river Sarasvati and solve the controversy regarding its exact course, in the sand covered Thar desert region. Data available from a variety of ground investigations carried out by different agencies working in this area have been analyzed in support of confirmation of palaeo channels, along the courses mapped under the present study. The results indicate that the river Sarasvati had its course through river Ghaggar and did not drain along the Aravalli hills. Also it did not shift its course drastically and continuously from east to west, as suggested by earlier workers. The image anomalies indicate that river Sarasvati flowed parallel to the river Indus as an independent river system (closer to the north-western Indian border) and did not flow through present course of river Nara. The findings raise the doubt that ‘Rise along Delhi-Hardwar ridge’ as suggested by earlier workers was the main cause for west-ward shift of Sarasvati river and ultimate drainage desiccation in the northwestern region. The analysis indicates towards rise in Himalayas/ Siwaliks and consequent displacements in the Siwaliks and its foot hills region (in the form of Yamuna and Satlej tear faults) as the main cause for drainage desiccation and disappearance of river Sarasvati.  相似文献

A new technique to determine flattening strain from initially concentric folds is described in this paper. The proposed method is simple and involves direct measurements on fold profiles. It requires measurement of the distance between the center of the fold to the middle of the layer, and this is plotted as a function of line orientation. The method needs few measurements at fixed angular spacing resulting in quick estimation of strain.  相似文献

The thermal structure of a sedimentary basin is controlled by its thermal conductivity, its boundary conditions, water flow, rate of sedimentation and erosion and radiogenic heat sources. The radiogenic heat production in the sediments is known to vary over several orders of magnitude, with the lowest values in evaporites and carbonates and the highest values in black shales. Due to a paucity of information available on the existing heat sources, this parameter can be represented with a known mean value and a Gaussian correlation structure rather than a deterministic function. In this paper, the 1-D steady-state thermal structure in a sedimentary basin has been modelled in a stochastic framework with a random radiogenic heat source, and analytical expressions for the first two moments of the temperature field have been obtained. A synthetic example has been examined to quantify the error bounds on the temperature field due to uncertainties in the radiogenic heat sources.  相似文献

Intense geomagnetic storms with DST index -100 nT were recorded on 9 March and 11 March 1993 associated with solar activity on 6 March and 9-10 March, respectively. In this paper, we discuss the characteristic features of the solar origins of the two events that gave rise to coronal and interplanetary disturbances and as a consequence produced strong geomagnetic activity at the Earth. The source of the activity in one case is attributed to a major 3M7.0 flare that occurred on 6 March 1993 and in the other case, to two large filament disruptions on the disk during 9-10 March, 1993. Both these sources were found to be located near changing or varying low-latitude coronal holes. They were also located close to the heliospheric currents sheets. Distinct X-ray activity was observed for both the events as observed by the Yohkoh SXT telescope. The detailed evolution and a comparison of these events on the basis of Yohkoh soft X-ray observations are presented here.  相似文献
