The straight-line relationship between depth and the square root of age predicted by recent variations of the thermal contraction model for ocean rise elevation is confirmed to an age of 80 m.y.We then examine this relationship in the immediate vicinity of the rise crest in an attempt to determine the sensitivity of the slopes thus obtained. Depth versus t1/2 profiles from a variety of rise types ranging from the topographically smooth, fast-spreading Pacific-Antarctic rise to the rough, slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic rise are discussed, ages having been assigned using a finite rotation pole. Because of the variety of superimposed anomalous features concentrated within a limited and well-surveyed region, the Galapagos Spreading Center has provided a suitable arena for determining the precision with which the method can decompose such an agglomeration into distinctly recognizable components. Although topographic “noise” precludes precise quantification of the slopes, it is concluded that, by removing the first-order effect of thermal contraction, the method can be quite revealing when topography is examined in relation to other data. Slopes for several profiles across the Pacific-Antarctic and Pacific-Nazca rises reveal the pattern expected in the case of asymmetric spreading, a conclusion which has independently been derived from the magnetic anomalies. In the Galapagos region “jumps” of the spreading center, a basic compositional difference, and uplift from below are exposed by their predictable effect on the slopes obtained from the depth versus t1/2 plots.  相似文献

At moderate temperature (T≈1/3 T Melt) recovery processes become very active in wet quartz and many subgrain boundaries (sgb's) are formed which still contain interesting information on the deformation mechanisms. In particular, the geometrical characteristics of a sgb (normal, rotation axis) depend upon the glide systems which have been activated. Possible sgb's in quartz are studied from a theoretical point of view with the help of the Frank formula. The predictions are compared with observations by optical microscopy and by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on naturally deformed quartz samples. Most of the predicted sgb's are effectively observed and there is an excellent agreement between theory and observation. This allows a rapid characterization of sgb's in tem to be performed by standard stereographic methods: only the directions of the dislocations and the plane of the sgb are determined; they are compared to a table deduced from geometrical considerations and the glide systems which have been activated during the deformation (at least the last stage of deformation) can be deduced. This method is very important for the case of quartz because the rapid irradiation of this material under the electron beam renders very difficult the characterization of the Burgers vectors of free dislocations. A similar method can be developed for observations in optical microscopy when the crystallographic orientation of the studied thin sections can be determined.  相似文献

The possibility of filling empty underground spaces, which exist owing to the extraction of mineral raw materials, with fly ash and cement fly ash mixes has been studied for the purpose of reducing the impact of deep mining on the surface. The method of physical modelling was used to study the behaviour of fly ash mixes deposited in extracted mine spaces. The models were constructed for two different geometries of underground extracted mine spaces: into cavities of the type of large slits created in the course of mining in steeply lode deposits without subsequently filling the empty space and in vertical shafts of rectangular or circular cross-section with horizontal side headings that have partly caved in due to mine shocks or other seismic events.  相似文献

Summary. As of today, seven X-ray sources have been tentatively identified as radio-quiet, isolated neutron stars. The family appears to be a rapidly growing one, although not all the objects have been identified with the same degree of certainty. The most convincing example of radio quiet pulsar is certainly Geminga, the neutron star nature of which, proposed in 1983 on the basis of its similarity with the Vela pulsar, has been firmly established with the discovery of its X and pulsation. Four more neutron star candidates, originally found in the Einstein data, have been confirmed by ROSAT, which has added to the list two more entries. All this is not the result of an unbiased search. The seven sources were not selected at random: four are inside supernova remnants, an obvious place to search for isolated neutron stars, while the remaining three were singled out because of some peculiarity. Intense -ray emission in the case of Geminga, very high X-ray counting rate for RXJ185635-3754, or being the brightest unidentified source in the Einstein medium sensitivity survey, MS 0317-6647. In spite of the limited number of objects and of the observational biases, these seven radio quiet neutron star candidates add valuable pieces of information to the observational panorama of known pulsars. Their properties, inferred from the X-ray emission, offer a coherent picture, pointing towards thermally emitting, cooling neutron stars. Received: April 1, 1996  相似文献

The POLAR 5 sounding rocket, launched from Andøya, Norway, on February 1, 1976, was of the “mother-daughter” configuration.A rocket-borne electron accelerator, mounted on the “daughter,” produced a pulsed electron beam with a maximum current of 130 mA and electron energies up to 10 kev.Using a photometer the luminescence at 391.4nm produced by electrons colliding with ambient nitrogen molecules was studied. The observed light at 391.4 nm consisted of low background, with occasional flashes due to the natural auroral excitations, and intense sparkles when the electron beam was emitted.Below 130 km the light observed during beam injection can be explained by excitations of ambient N2 due to high energy beam electrons.In the altitude range from 150 km to apogee at 220 km, the observed light level during beam emission is fairly constant and much larger than that produced by the high energy beam electrons. A possible source of this light is the excitation of ambient N2 by an enhanced population of low energy electrons, created by the presence of a beam plasma discharge in the vicinity of the “daughter” payload.  相似文献
