A chemical product tanker, The Ievoli Sun, was abandoned and later sank approximately 11 miles NW of Alderney in the English Channel in October 2000. The vessel carried a mixed cargo comprising 4000 tonnes of styrene, and 1000 tonnes each of methyl ethyl ketone and isopropyl alcohol. These chemicals are of low to moderate toxicity to aquatic life, are not persistent and have a low potential for bio-accumulation. Both of the solvents are miscible in water, whilst styrene is practically insoluble and, following release, it will rise to the sea surface and rapidly evaporate. More than 1000 tonnes of styrene are believed to have been lost to sea during the incident, resulting in an aerial plume of vapour which crossed Alderney and episodic contamination of air and water in the immediate vicinity of the wreck site. Analysis of edible tissues using coupled gas chromatography/mass spectrometry demonstrated low-level styrene contamination of crabs recovered from pots laid very close to the wreck site prior to the incident. These concentrations posed no risks to human consumers, and no fishery controls were implemented. The remainder of the styrene and the ship's main bunker fuel were recovered from the wreck on the seabed, whilst the two chemical solvents were released to the water column in a slow, controlled manner.  相似文献

The role of population change in widening the mortality gap in Scotland   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The social gradient in health and mortality has been acknowledged for some time and, more recently, there is some evidence that the gap between the richer and poorer is widening in Britain. Other studies have also shown that health and mortality outcomes are worse in places that are experiencing population decline and better in places that are growing. This analysis examines, first, whether there is a mortality gap between the least and most deprived people in Scotland, second, whether this gap has widened since the 1980s and, third, whether the gap can be explained by patterns of population change. Our results demonstrate that the widening mortality gap in Scotland cannot be explained simply as an artefact of population change, even though it is widening most in those places that are experiencing population decline. This type of research is made possible by the reliable denominator population information provided in the 1981 and 2001 censuses.  相似文献

Abstract:  A distinctive feature of many of New Zealand's coastal landscapes has been the rudimentarily constructed holiday home known as a 'bach'. In recent years, however, rapidly escalating beachfront property prices, and the associated development of elite residential landscapes, have threatened the status of the bach. This commentary examines the diminishing number of 'classic' kiwi baches, and specifically considers the case of Rangitoto, a volcanic island close to central Auckland. Here, the location of baches on publicly owned land has been controversial and the small number that remains symbolize curiosities from another time and place.  相似文献

 Four Late Holocene pyroclastic units composed of block and ash flows, surges, ashfalls of silicic andesite and dacite composition, and associated lahar deposits represent the recent products emitted by domes on the upper part of Nevado Cayambe, a large ice-capped volcano 60 km northeast of Quito. These units are correlated stratigraphically with fallout deposits (ash and lapilli) exposed in a peat bog. Based on 14C dating of the peat and charcoal, the following ages were obtained: ∼910 years BP for the oldest unit, 680–650 years BP for the second, and 400–360 years BP for the two youngest units. Moreover, the detailed tephrochronology observed in the peat bog and in other sections implies at least 21 volcanic events during the last 4000 years, comprising three principal eruptive phases of activity that are ∼300, 800, and 900 years in duration and separated by repose intervals of 600–1000 years. The last phase, to which the four pyroclastic units belong, has probably not ended, as suggested by an eruption in 1785–1786. Thus, Cayambe, previously thought to have been dormant for a long time, should be considered active and potentially dangerous to the nearby population of the Interandean Valley. An estimation of the volume of light nonaqueous phase liquids (LNAPL) is often required during site assessment, remedial design, or litigation. LNAPL volume can be estimated by a strictly empirical approach whereby core samples, distributed throughout the vertical and lateral extent of LNAPL, are analyzed for LNAPL content, and these data are then integrated to compute a volume. Alternatively, if the LNAPL has obtained vertical equilibrium, the thickness of LNAPL in monitoring wells can be used to calculate of LNAPL in monitoring wells can be used to calculate LNAPL volume at the well locations if appropriate soil and LNAPL properties can be estimated.
A method is described for estimating key soil and LNAPL properties by nonlinear regression of vertical profiles of LNAPL saturation. The methods is relatively fast, cost effective, and amenable to quantitative analysis of uncertainty. Optionally, the method allows statistical determination of best-fit values for the Van Genuchten capillary parameters (n, αoil-water and αoil-air), residual water saturation and ANAPL density. The sensitivity of the method was investigated by fitting field LNAPL saturation profiles and then determining the variation in misfit (mean square residual) as a function of parameter value for each parameter. Using field data from a sandy aquifer, the fitting statistics were found to be highly sensitive to LNAPL density, αoil-water and αoil-air moderately sensitive to the Van Genuchten n value, and weakly sensitive to residual water saturation. The regression analysis also provides information that can be used to estimate uncertainty in the estimated parameters, which can then be used to estimate uncertainty in calculated values of specific volume.  相似文献

Encapsulated nuclear waste materials, dumped by Russia, are present at two deepwater seafloor locations in the offshore north-west Pacific Ocean, south-east of the Kamchatka Peninsula. This paper assesses potential pathways by which these wastes might, if released from their containers, disperse away from the dumpsites and through the surrounding ocean. A review of large-scale ocean circulation theory and of field and model results suggests that mean abyssal currents are north-eastward to eastward from the dumpsite locations and would advect leaking materials toward the north-eastern Pacific. Results of advective and diffusive horizontal plume transport models are consistent with this sense of flow. Trajectory speeds are, however, subject to considerable uncertainty. Our results suggest that as little as 5 years or as long as 100 years might be required for material to be transported from the dump sites to the north-east Pacific. Dilution by 4 or 5 orders of magnitude is predicted during this transit. Vertical mixing or upwelling are necessary in order to transport contaminants upward from north-east Pacific abyssal waters to the near-surface layers before they can potentially impact productive coastal regions, such as those off Alaska. Information concerning such upwelling mechanisms is inadequate for estimation of rates or to identify geographical areas that might be at risk.  相似文献

Three central Arctic Ocean sediment cores were sampled for percentage carbonate, number of foraminifera, and texture. These three parameters were used in spectral analyses to test the idea that the ice-covered Arctic Ocean may respond to orbital forcing in a different manner than has been indicated for lower latitude ice-free oceans. The record for two of the cores represents approximately 1 my, and the record for the third, approximately 400,000 yr. The 100,000-yr frequency is well represented in all of the cores. A 40,000-yr frequency may be present, as well. An unexpected 70,000-yr frequency occurs in most of the spectra and may reflect nonlinear sedimentation rates or the combined effect of obliquity and eccentricity. The strong 100,000-yr signal confirms that, in spite of ice feedback, the Arctic Ocean has responded to orbital forcing in much the same manner as have ice-free oceans.  相似文献

A select group of endocrine disrupters, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products was studied to determine the degree of biological attenuation in water reuse applications. Laboratory investigations involved both batch reactors using biologically active sand and continuous flow simulated aquifer storage and recovery experiments. All laboratory experiments were conducted using Colorado River water spiked with various target compounds at concentrations between 10 and 100 ng/L. Field studies were also conducted to determine the occurrence and attenuation of target compounds in water reuse applications. Two golf courses irrigated with reuse water were studied to determine if turf applications led to contamination of nearby ground water. A waste water treatment facility that uses rapid infiltration basins seasonally was also tested to determine the degree of attenuation of detectable target compounds along a subsurface flowpath. A qualitative structural activity relationship model was applied to the target compounds to predict the general rate of aerobic biological degradation. Significant attenuation of many target compounds was observed in both laboratory and field experiments. Conversely, several compounds displayed limited removal during these studies. Field experiments were limited to detectable compounds and various nonbiological removal or concentration effects that may impact data interpretations, which are discussed in this paper. The predictive model was found to be moderately accurate within the confines of the project scope.  相似文献
