In this study, we conducted electrophoretic mobility, potentiometric titration, and metal sorption experiments to investigate the surface charge characteristics of Bacillus subtilis and the electrostatic interactions between metal cations and the cell surface electric field. Electrophoretic mobility experiments performed as a function of pH and ionic strength show an isoelectric point of pH 2.4, with the magnitude of the electrokinetic potential increasing with increasing pH, and decreasing with increasing ionic strength. Potentiometric titration experiments conducted from pH 2.4 to 9 yield an average surface charge excess of 1.6 μmol/mg (dry mass). Corresponding cell wall charge density values were used to calculate the Donnan potential (ΨDON) as function of pH and ionic strength. Metal sorption experiments conducted with Ca(II), Sr(II), and Ba(II) exhibit strong ionic strength dependence, suggesting that the metal ions are bound to the bacterial cell wall via an outer-sphere complexation mechanism. Intrinsic metal sorption constants for the sorption reactions were determined by correcting the apparent sorption constant with the Boltzmann factor. A 1:2 metal-ligand stoichiometry provides the best fit to the experimental data with log K2int values of 5.9 ± 0.3, 6.0 ± 0.2, 6.2 ± 0.2 for Ca(II), Sr(II), and Ba(II) respectively. Electrophoretic mobility measurements of cells sorbed with Ca(II), Sr(II), and Ba(II) support the 1:2 sorption stoichiometry. These results indicate that electrical potential parameters derived from the Donnan model can be applied to predict metal binding onto bacterial surfaces over a wide range of pH and ionic strength conditions.  相似文献

The universal scale of apparent temperature (AT) and clo, a unit measuring the amount of clothing insulation required to maintain comfort, were used to examine the weather stress in Hong Kong. Hourly AT and clo values were computed using hourly air temperature, wind speed, vapour pressure and cloud cover data from 1980 to 1994. Results of both AT and clo reflected highly corresponding changes of thermal stress. It is found that the most stressful time in winter and summer occurred in the early morning and afternoon, and cool weather and tropical ensembles were required to surmount the extreme weather stress respectively. A greater percent of time with severe heat stress than those with extreme cold stress was discovered. These results also indicated that clo is a more informative weather stress index than AT since it provides both the thermal stress and clothing requirements to sustain comfort.  相似文献

The dynamical evolution of bodies under the gravitational influence of the accreting proto-Uranus and proto-Neptune is investigated. The main aim of this study is to analyze the interrelations between the accretion of Uranus and Neptune with other processes of cosmological importance as, for example, the formation of a cometary reservoir from bodies placed into near-parabolic orbits by planetary perturbations and the scattering of bodies to the region of the terrestrial planets. Starting with a mass ratio (initial mass/present mass) of 0.1, Uranus and Neptune acquire masses close to their present ones in a time scale of 108 years. Neptune is found to be the most important contributor of comets to the cometary reservoir. The time scale of bodies scattered by Neptune to reach near-parabolic orbits (semimajor axes a > 104 AU)is about 109 years. The contribution of Uranus was partially inhibited because a large part of the residual bodies of its accretion zone fell under the strong gravitational influence of Jupiter and Saturn. A significant fraction of the bodies dispersed by Uranus and Neptune reached the region of the terrestrial planets in a time scale of some 108 years.  相似文献

Geomaterials such as soils and rocks can exhibit inherent anisotropy due to the preferred orientation of mineral grains and/or cracks. They can also be partially saturated with multiple types of fluids occupying the pore space. The anisotropic and unsaturated behaviors of geomaterials can be highly interdependent. Experimental studies have shown that the elastic parameters of rocks evolve with saturation. The effect of saturation has also been shown to differ between directions in transversely isotropic clay rock. This gives rise to saturation-dependent stiffness anisotropy. Similarly, permeability anisotropy can also be saturation-dependent. In this study, constitutive equations accommodating saturation-dependent stiffness and hydraulic anisotropy are presented. A linear function is used to describe the relationship between the elastic parameters and saturation, while the relative permeability–saturation relationship is characterized with a log-linear function. These equations are implemented into a hydromechanical framework to investigate the effects of saturation-dependent properties on the shrinkage behavior of clay rocks. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the role of saturation-dependent stiffness and hydraulic anisotropy in shrinkage behavior. The results highlight that strain anisotropy and time evolution of pore pressures are substantially influenced by saturation-dependent stiffness and hydraulic anisotropy.

Surface ocean currents are often of interest in environmental monitoring. These vectorial data can be reasonably treated as a finite realization of a complex-valued random field, where the decomposition in modulus (current speed) and direction (current direction) of the current field is natural. Moreover, when observations are also available for different time points (other than at several locations), it is useful to evaluate the evolution of their complex correlation over time (rather than in space) and the corresponding modeling which is required for estimation purposes. This paper illustrates a first approach where the temporal profile of surface ocean currents is considered. After introducing the fundamental aspects of the complex formalism of a random field indexed in time, a new class of models suitable for including the temporal component is proposed and applied to describe the time-varying complex covariance function of current data. The analysis concerns ocean current observations, taken hourly on 30 April 2016 through high frequency radar systems at some stations located in the Northeastern Caribbean Sea. The selected complex covariance model indexed in time is used for estimation purposes and its reliability is confirmed by a numerical analysis.

We assessed the current status of tributyltin (TBT) contamination of Thais clavigera (Gastropoda) along the coastal area of Mirs Bay, China for the first time. The snail samples were collected from 10 different sites in the summer (June) and winter (December) of 2006, respectively. They were analyzed for imposex status, i.e. relative penis size index (RPSI) and vas deferens sequence index (VDSI), followed by quantification of butyltins in their tissues. Most of the collected females suffered from imposex, but the level of butyltin contamination varied with the distance from Yantian Port, which is currently the fourth busiest container port in the world. The tissue concentration of TBT varied with season. For a particular site, the winter samples in general contained much higher concentration of TBT than the summer samples. RPSI, VDSI and organotin concentrations were higher in T. clavigera collected from sites closer to the Port, such as the Seafood Street and Kat O. Both RPSI and VDSI were positively correlated with the tissue burden of tributyltin. VDSI exhibited little seasonal variability, whereas RPSI showed marked seasonal variability, with lower values in the summer samples. The current results will serve as an important reference for long-term monitoring of butyltin contamination in this area.  相似文献
