A huge late-Quaternary landslide (about 2᎒6 m3) dammed the Colfiorito basin in central Italy. This landslide was responsible for the formation of the present saddle, which divides the basin from the Chienti river valley. Landslide damming caused persisting lacustrine conditions during the Late Pleistocene-Holocene. High-standing lacustrine episodes are evidenced by two terraces located close to the top of the landslide dam, one of which can be related to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). During this period, the landslide dam was probably overtopped by the imponded lake. Before and during the LGM, the area of the landslide dam was affected by alluvial deposition. The landslide-induced lacustrine environment has played a key role in the history of land use at Colfiorito. The presence of water close to a strategic area located at the divide between the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian regions favored its frequentation and settlement during the Upper Palaeolithic (in particular Aurignacian-Early Gravettian), as shown by the numerous archaeological remains contained in the alluvial deposits close to the landslide accumulation. During the Iron Age, the lake represented a unique source of sustenance, as indicated by the presence of peri-lacustrine settlements. In contrast, the land use drastically changed during antiquity with the Roman domination of the region. The necessity to cultivate new lands and particularly the problem of providing a food supply for Rome are the causes of the drainage of the Colfiorito lake by means of a tunnel excavated through the landslide dam. Based on radiocarbon dating, the operation of the Roman tunnel ended during the 5th-7th centuries A.D. (dates related to the deposits filling the tunnel), but the continuation of agricultural vocations in the area did not fade, and a new tunnel, which operated until 2000, was built during the 15th century. Because of the damaged conditions of the 15th century hydraulic works, a third tunnel was built (between 1998 and 2000), which permits the drainage of the Colfiorito area and the continuation of the agricultural activities.  相似文献

Introduced in Italy in the 1980s for aquaculture enterprises, the red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, has invaded many water bodies, giving rise to breeding populations that now threaten freshwater ecosystems. An understanding of the spatial behaviour of this crayfish could be the baseline for future research aimed at control and management. Following the same pattern as other freshwater decapods, P. clarkii, studied in an irrigation ditch system in Florence, Tuscany, displayed stationary phases (several marked individuals were recaptured in the area) interposed with nomadic bursts of movement (many marked crayfish disappeared). With a few exceptions, nocturnal activity prevailed in almost all the seasons in two different analysed habitats (irrigation ditches and the Massaciuccoli Lake, Lucca). However, in the laboratory, locomotion occurred mostly at daytime. Although still prevailing, P. clarkii's nocturnal activity appeared puzzling, because some of its major predators are nocturnal and this species is mostly herbivorous. The intercalation between stationary and wandering phases leaves open further promising studies on social structures in the field.  相似文献

The solubility of baddeleyite (ZrO2) and the speciation of zirconium have been investigated in HF-bearing aqueous solutions at temperatures up to 400 °C and pressures up to 700 bar. The data obtained suggest that in HF-bearing solutions zirconium is transported mainly in the form of the hydroxyfluoride species ZrF(OH)3° and ZrF2(OH)2°. Formation constants determined for these species (Zr4+ + nF + mOH = ZrFn(OH)m°) range from 43.7 at 100 °C to 46.41 at 400 °C for ZrF(OH)3°, and from 37.25 at 100 °C to 43.88 at 400 °C for ZrF2(OH)2°.Although the solubility of ZrO2 is retrograde with respect to temperature, the measured concentrations of Zr are orders of magnitude higher than those predicted from theoretical extrapolations based on simple fluoride species (ZrF3+-ZrF62−). Model calculations performed for zircon show that zirconium can be transported by aqueous fluids in concentrations sufficient to account for the concentration of this metal at conditions commonly encountered in fluoride-rich natural hydrothermal systems.  相似文献

— The study of surface deformation due to seismic activity is often made using dislocations with uniform slip and simple geometries. A better modeling of coseismic and postseismic surface displacements can be obtained by using dislocations with variable slip and nonregular shapes. This is consistent with the asperity model of fault surfaces, assuming a friction distribution on faults made of locked zones with much higher friction than surrounding zones. In this paper we consider the 1997–1998 Colfiorito seismic sequence. The coseismic surface displacements in the Colfiorito zone are used in order to infer the slip distribution on the fault surface at different stages of the sequence. The displacement field has been modeled varying the slip distribution on the fault, and comparing the deformation observed by SAR and GPS techniques with model results. The slip distribution is calculated by Monte Carlo simulations on a normal fault with the dip angle equal to 40°. A good approximation is obtained by using square asperity units of 1.5×1.5 km2. In the first stage, we employed a simplified model with uniform slip, in which each asperity unit is allowed to slip a constant amount or not to slip at all, and in the second stage, we evaluate the slip distribution in the dislocation area determined by the Monte Carlo inversion: in this case we allow unit cells to undergo different values of slip in order to refine the initial dislocation model. The results show that the 1997 seismic events of the sequence can be modeled by irregular dislocations, obtaining a good fit to the DInSAR and GPS observations. The model also confirms the results of previous studies by a different methodology, defining the distribution of asperities on the fault plane using the fault geometry, the geodetic data and the seismic moment of the 1997–1998 Colfiorito seismic sequence. Furthermore, the analysis of 1997 aftershocks in the seismogenic region shows a strong correlation between most events and the asperity distribution, which can be considered as an independent test of the validity of the model.  相似文献

This paper re-evaluates the origin of some peculiar patterns of ground deformation in the Central Apennines, observed by space geodetic techniques during the two earthquakes of the Colfiorito seismic sequence on September 26th, 1997. The surface displacement field due to the fault dislocation, as modelled with the classic Okada elastic formulations, shows some areas with high residuals which cannot be attributed to non-simulated model complexities. The residuals were investigated using geomorphological analysis, recognising the geologic evidence of deep-seated gravitational slope deformations (DSGSD) of the block-slide type. The shape and direction of the co-seismic ground displacement observed in these areas are correlated with the expected pattern of movement produced by the reactivation of the identified DSGSD. At least a few centimetres of negative “Line of Sight” ground displacement was determined for the Costa Picchio, Mt. Pennino, and Mt. Prefoglio areas. A considerable horizontal component of movement in the Costa Picchio DSGSD is evident from a qualitative analysis of ascending and descending interferograms. The timing of the geodetic data indicates that the ground movement occurred during the seismic shaking, and that it did not progress appreciably during the following months. This work has verified the seismic triggering of DSGSD previously hypothesized by many researchers. A further implication is that in the assessment of DSGSD hazard seismic input needs to be considered as an important cause of accelerated deformation.  相似文献

Two characteristics of peralkaline igneous rocks that are poorly understood are the extreme enrichment in HFSE, notably Zr, Nb, Y and REE, and the occurrence of fluid inclusions dominated by methane and higher hydrocarbons. Although much of the HFSE enrichment can be explained by magmatic processes, the common intense alteration of the parts of the peralkaline intrusions most enriched in these elements suggests that hydrothermal processes also play an important role in HFSE enrichment. Likewise, although the origin of the higher order hydrocarbons that occur as inclusions in these rocks is still debated, there is strong evidence that at least in some cases their formation involved hydrothermal processes. The issues of HFSE enrichment and hydrocarbon formation in peralkaline intrusions are examined using data from the Strange Lake pluton, a small, middle-Proterozoic intrusion of peralkaline granite in northeast Canada. This pluton contains some of the highest concentrations of Zr, REE and Y ever reported in an igneous body, and is characterised by abundant hydrocarbon-dominated fluid inclusions in rocks that have been hydrothermally altered, including those that form a potential HFSE ore zone. We show that HFSE at Strange Lake were partly concentrated to near exploitable levels as a result of their transport in a high salinity magmatic aqueous liquid, and that this fluid coexisted immiscibly with a carbonic phase which reacted with hydrogen and iron oxides generated during the associated hydrothermal alteration to produce hydrocarbons via a Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. As a result, hydrocarbons and HFSE mineralization are intimately associated. We then go on to show that hydrothermal alteration, HFSE mineralisation and hydrocarbons are also spatially associated in other peralkaline complexes, and present a model to explain this association, which we believe may be applicable to any peralkaline intrusion where HFSE enrichment was accompanied by calcium metasomatism, hematisation and hydrothermal fluorite. We also suggest that, even where these criteria are not satisfied, hydrothermally enriched HFSE and hydrocarbons will be intimately associated simply because they are products of the same initial magmatic fluid. Finally, we speculate that the association of HFSE and hydrocarbons may in some cases actually be genetic, if, as seems possible, unmixing or effervescence of a reduced carbonic fluid from the original magmatic fluid caused changes in temperature, pH, fO2 or the activity of volatile ligands sufficient to induce the deposition of HFSE minerals.  相似文献

The X-ray-bright Seyfert 1 galaxy III Zw 2 was observed with XMM–Newton in 2000 July. Its X-ray spectrum can be described by a power law of photon index Γ= 1.7 and an extremely broad (FWHM∼ 140 000 km  s−1  ) Fe Kα line at 6.44 keV. The iron line has an equivalent width of ∼800 eV. To study the long-term X-ray behaviour of the source we have analysed 25 yr of data, from 1975 to 2000. There is no evidence of significant intrinsic absorption within the source or of a soft X-ray excess in the XMM or archival data. We do not detect rapid X-ray variability (a few  × 103 s  ) during any of the individual observations; however, on longer time-scales (a few years) the X-ray light curve shows 10-fold flux variations. We infer a black hole mass of  ∼109 M  (from Hβ FWHM) for III Zw 2 which is much higher than some previous estimates.
A comparison of X-ray variability with light curves at other wavelengths over a 25-yr period reveals correlated flux variations from radio to X-ray wavelengths. We interpret the variable radio to optical emission as synchrotron radiation, self-absorbed in the radio/millimetre region, and the X-rays mainly as a result of Compton up-scattering of low-energy photons by the population of high-energy electrons that give rise to the synchrotron radiation.  相似文献
