The hydrology of Quebec, Canada, boreal fens is poorly documented. Many peatlands are located in watersheds with impounded rivers. In such cases, their presence influences reservoir inflows. In recent years, some fens have been subjected to an increase of their wet area, a sign that they may be evolving towards an aquatic ecosystem. This dynamic process is called aqualysis. This article presents the seasonal and monthly hydrological budgets of a small watershed including a highly aqualysed fen (James Bay region). The monitoring of precipitation (P), runoff (Q) and groundwater levels (WL) was conducted during the ice‐free season. Three semiempirical equations (Thornthwaite, Priestley–Taylor and Penman–Monteith) were used and compared to calculate potential evapotranspiration. The first two equations, having fewer parameters, estimate higher potential evapotranspiration values than the third equation. The use of pressure‐level gauges installed in wells, for the calculation of peatland water storage, is inconclusive. Swelling of peat, peat decomposition and plant composition could be responsible for nonnegligible amounts of absorbed water, which are not entirely accounted for by well levels. The estimation of peat matrix water storage is potentially the largest source of error and the limiting factor to calculate water balances in this environment. The results show that the groundwater level and the water storage vary depending on the season and especially after a heavy rainfall. Finally, the results illustrate the complexity of water routing through the site and thus raise several questions to be resolved in the future. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Remobilization, bioavailability, and potential toxicity of chemical contaminants were evaluated at the 4H shell mounds – the site of abandoned offshore oil and gas production platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel region of the Southern California Bight. Evaluations used a weight-of-evidence approach based on results from bulk phase chemical analyses and laboratory toxicity testing of shell mound cores, in situ field bioassays using caged mussels, and surficial sediment chemistry. Shell mound cores contained elevated concentrations of metals associated with drilling wastes (e.g., Ba, Cr, Pb, and Zn), as well as monocyclic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The highest concentrations along with pockets of free oil were associated with the middle “cuttings” stratum. Sediments composited from all core strata caused significant acute toxicity and bioaccumulation of Ba and PAHs in test organisms during laboratory exposures. In contrast, caged mussels placed at each of the shell mounds for a period of 57–58 days had greater than 90% survival, and there were no significant differences in survival of mussels placed at the shell mounds and corresponding reference sites. While all mussel samples exhibited increases in shell length, whole animal weight, and tissue lipid content, in some cases growth metrics for the shell mound mussels were significantly higher than those for the reference sites. Concentrations of metals, PAHs, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in tissues of the shell mound mussels were not significantly different from those at reference sites. The presence of labile aromatic hydrocarbons in shell mound cores and absence of significant contaminant accumulation of tissues of caged mussels indicated that chemical contaminants are not being remobilized from the 4H shell mounds. Surficial bottom sediments near the shell mounds contained elevated Ba concentrations that probably were associated with drilling wastes. However, concentrations did not exhibit clear spatial gradients with distance from the shell mounds. Despite a number of storm events during the mussel exposures, maximum currents were 34 cm s−1 and unlikely to erode materials from the shell mounds. Thus, Ba distributions in bottom sediments probably were due to episodic disturbance such as platform removal or trawling rather than ongoing erosion and dispersion of shell mound solids by near-bottom currents. These results suggest that, in the absence of physical disturbances, contaminants are expected to remain sequestered in the shell mounds.  相似文献

In this study, we show that time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) can be used to detect organic biomarkers, such as hopanes and steranes, in non-fractionated crude oils, without extraction and chemical preparation. Hopanes and steranes may provide valuable information on the history of life on early Earth, particularly if they are present in fluid inclusions in ancient rocks. Due to the presence of different generations of inclusions in even very small rock samples, it would be advantageous to find a method capable of detecting biomarkers in single oil rich fluid inclusions. The capability of ToF-SIMS for detailed chemical analysis of very small sample amounts makes it a potential technique for such analysis, and in this work this possibility is explored. The presence of hopanes and steranes in four different crude oils of different ages and stages of biodegradation was investigated using ToF-SIMS and GC–MS. By combining analyses of biomarker standards, crude oils and chromatographic oil fractions, specific peaks for the different biomarkers were identified in the ToF-SIMS spectra. The presence of these peaks in the spectra from the crude oil samples could be attributed to the biomarkers based on exact mass determination and by comparison with the spectra from the biomarker containing and biomarker lacking fractions, respectively. In addition, the results show that a significant biomarker signal may be obtained from a 10 μm2 oil sample, demonstrating the potential of ToF-SIMS for analysis of single oil bearing fluid inclusions, which in turn may contribute to a better understanding of the early history of life on Earth.  相似文献

A reaction-transport model was used to infer the long-term evolution of anaerobic organic matter degradation in Cretaceous black shales from the distribution of authigenic barite in sediments drilled at Demerara Rise (ODP Leg 207, Site 1258). In these sediments, sulfate-reduction and methanogenesis are the major pathways of organic matter decomposition and the depth-distribution of authigenic barite serves as an indicator for the temporal evolution of the sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ), the strength of the biogenic methane flux and, ultimately, the organic matter reactivity in the black shales over geological timescales. Organic matter degradation is described according to the reactive continuum model approach and parameters values are determined by inverse modeling, based on present-day porewater and authigenic barite profiles. Fully transient simulations were performed over a period of 100 Myrs and indicate that important features of the biogeochemical dynamics are associated to changes in the boundary forcing. Hiatuses in sediment accumulation rate result in quasi-steady-state conditions and lead to distinct accumulations of authigenic barites in the SMTZ. The inversely determined parameters reveal that the reactivity of the organic matter was already low (apparent first order rate constant ) at the time of its deposition in the Cretaceous. The geochemical characteristics of sediments drilled at Demerara Rise, as well as the presence of specific biomarkers, suggest that this low reactivity is most likely due to the euxinic palaeo-conditions which favored the sulfurization of the organic matter. Simulation results predict average initial organic carbon contents between 8.1 and 9.5 wt%, implying a high preservation efficiency of the organic matter (between 79% and 89%). Calculated mass accumulation rates (between 0.43 and 0.5 ) compare well with estimations for the western basin of the Cretaceous southern North Atlantic. Simulation results thus indicate that the enhanced preservation of organic matter under euxinic conditions may have been the main cause for the formation of organic-rich Cretaceous black shales at Demerara Rise.  相似文献

Abstract— An approximately 0.4 km diameter elliptical structure formed in Devonian granite in southwestern Nova Scotia, herein named the Bloody Creek structure (BCS), is identified as a possible impact crater. Evidence for an impact origin is based on integrated geomorphic, geophysical, and petrographic data. A near‐continuous geomorphic rim and a 10 m deep crater that is infilled with lacustrine sediments and peat define the BCS. Ground penetrating radar shows that the crater has a depressed inner floor that is sharply ringed by a 1 m high buried scarp. Heterogeneous material under the floor, interpreted as deposits from collapse of the transient cavity walls, is overlain by stratified and faulted lacustrine and wetland sediments. Alteration features found only in rim rocks include common grain comminution, polymict lithic microbreccias, kink‐banded feldspar and biotite, single and multiple sets of closely spaced planar microstructures (PMs) in quartz and feldspar, and quartz mosaicism, rare reduced mineral birefringence, and chlorite showing plastic deformation and flow microtextures. Based on their form and crystallographic orientations, the quartz PMs consist of planar deformation features that document shock‐metamorphic pressures ≤25 GPa. The age of the BCS is not determined. The low depth to diameter ratio of the crater, coupled with anomalously high shock‐metamorphic pressures recorded at its exposed rim, may be a result of significant post‐impact erosion. Alternatively, impact onto glacier ice during the waning stages of Wisconsinian deglaciation (about 12 ka BP) may have resulted in dissipation of much impact energy into the ice, resulting in the present morphology of the BCS.  相似文献

The Jinchuan ultramafic intrusion in western China hosts the third-largest magmatic Ni–Cu deposit in the world. The crystallization age of the intrusion has long been debated. Here, we present a U–Pb ID-TIMS zircon age of 831.8 ± 0.6 Ma obtained on thermally annealed and chemically etched zircons from a lherzolite sample. The coexisting baddeleyite in the sample is indistinguishable from the age of zircon. Our new results confirm that the emplacement of the Jinchuan ultramafic intrusion was temporally related to the breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent.  相似文献

A main challenge associated to EU Water Framework Directive corresponds to groundwater monitoring, both quantitative and chemical. The need for monitoring was also stressed by the Azores Water Plan. Monitoring of the chemical status of groundwater in Azores started in 2003 and has been progressively enlarged to all islands, totalizing 72 springs and 32 wells. A large number of parameters are analysed biannually, as major, minor and trace elements, pesticides and total hydrocarbons, as well as microbial indicators. Spring waters are mainly from HCO3–Na type; instead water from wells is predominantly from the Cl–Na type, been differences attributed to their respective hydrogeologic framework. Springs discharge mainly from perched-water bodies, been influenced mainly from CO2 in soils, silicate weathering, and seawater spraying and aerosols. Wells are in basal bodies, therefore subject to seawater intrusion influence, and 9% of Cl analyses made in wells exceed the standard value. Heavy metals, metalloids, hydrocarbons and pesticides all comply with standard values. Agriculture pollution also influences groundwater quality, as revealed by both NO3 and PO4 content, been the guide value exceeded respectively in 8 and 9% of the analyses. Despite the discontinuous variation of coliforms over time microbial indicators present an impact on water quality.  相似文献

This work aims to estimate the potential effects of the global warming projected for the twenty-first century on the biodiversity of a remote and pristine region of the Neotropics called Pantepui. Habitat loss and fragmentation by upward migration of bioclimatic conditions is analyzed using Species-Area Relationships (SAR) and Altitudinal Range Displacement (ARD) analysis. The ARD is a tool that uses the present-day lapse rate to estimate the upward migration of the species based on the global warming predicted by the IPCC. The results show that around 80% of the vascular flora, ca. 1,700 species of which up to 400 would be Pantepui endemics, are threatened of extinction. These estimates should be considered preliminary, but the danger is real. Therefore, suitable conservation or mitigation strategies are needed.  相似文献

We studied the eutrophication history of a tropical shallow reservoir in the S?o Paulo metropolitan region, southeast Brazil. We analyzed grain size, geochemistry, diatom assemblages, and land-use records in a sediment core from the reservoir to infer its trophic state history during the last ~110?years (1894?C2005). Eighty diatom species were observed in the core and shifts in the relative abundances of planktonic and benthic taxa indicate major limnological changes associated with complex interactions between hydrologic factors and eutrophication. Discostella stelligera was associated with deforestation and water physical changes whereas Aulacoseira granulata, a species abundant throughout the core, was mostly associated with high flux conditions and erosion events, regardless of trophic state. Eutrophication was triggered by construction of the city zoo (1958) and installation of the S?o Paulo State Department of Agriculture (1975) within the Gar?as watershed, and increasing loads of untreated sewage from these institutions. The data suggest that deterioration in water quality began after ~1975 and markedly accelerated after ~1990. The reservoir has been hypereutrophic since 1999. Steady increases in geochemical proxies for trophic state, along with a decrease in C/N ratios, indicated higher nutrient concentrations and the prevalence of autochthonous production towards the core top. Appearance of Achnanthidium catenatum ~1993 highlighted the onset of a marked eutrophication phase. The subsequent dominance of Planothidium rostratum and Cyclotella meneghiniana suggested a sharp shift to a hypereutrophic state since 1999. Land-use history proved valuable for validating the chronology and interpreting anthropogenic impacts. Multi-proxy analysis of the sediment record provided an effective tool for tracking ecological shifts in the reservoir ecosystem. This study provides the first reconstruction of lake eutrophication history in Brazil and highlights the importance of hydrological/physical changes as drivers of diatom assemblage shifts in reservoirs, which may confound trophic state inferences based on shifts in the planktonic/benthic diatom ratio.  相似文献

Stratigraphic variations in diatom composition and phytolith abundance in a sediment core from a small, hydrologically isolated waterbody, Lake Nhauhache, Mozambique, provide evidence of water-level fluctuations over the past ~2,300?years. Ten AMS radiocarbon dates on bulk sediment samples show that the lake came into existence about 2,300?years ago and that it has dried out since then, but only for brief time periods. Changes in the diatom assemblage composition indicate that lake level fluctuated in response to shifting humidity conditions. The changes reflect wetter conditions ca. 300 BC?CAD 800, more variable conditions between AD 800 and 1150, a distinct dry phase within the time span AD 1150?C1700 and a return thereafter to more humid conditions until present. There is general agreement between the Lake Nhauhache record and other records from the Southern Hemisphere summer rainfall region. This suggests that sediments from small interdunal lakes, which are abundant along the coast of southern Africa, provide reliable, regional paleoenvironmental information about an area from which more such data are needed.  相似文献
