A variational data assimilation method is applied to a simplified marine ecosystem model of NPZ (Nutrient Phytoplankton Zooplankton) type, which implies five parameters. The method allows us to optimise these parameters by an iterative process of minimisation of a cost function which quantifies the quadratic discrepancy between observations and simulation results. The first part of this note describes how to obtain the adjoint model of the NPZ model allowing us to compute the gradient of the cost function relative to the parameters. Two experiments of artificial data assimilation then show the efficiency of this method, but also its limitations because of non-linearities and sensitivity problems of the model relative to the parameters. The distribution coefficient (Kd) expresses the relationship between the concentration of an element, which is adsorbed in the solid surface and its remaining concentration in the solution. The Kd is a very important factor in reactive transport, representing the source/sink term, and explaining the difference between the velocity of transport of non-conservative elements (Kd>0) and water flow velocity. In this paper, the Kd value for Zn element in loess like sediments forming the Pampeano aquifer is determined and this value is used in the modeling of reactive transport from the landfill of the city of Mar del Plata (Argentina). The determination of Kd value was done by means of batch experiments. The results obtained showed good agreement with Freundlich isotherm, with a value of KF=300.95 ml g−1 and a super index value b of 0.3961. These values were applied to reactive transport modeling using Visual Modflow code. The Zn plume obtained showed the low mobility of the element in the oxidizing conditions of the environment.  相似文献

The Dolomite region is located in the Southern Alps, which were affected by Mesozoic extensional tectonics and by consequent thermal perturbations. In this work, vitrinite reflectance and apatite fission-track analysis are used to estimate the thermal evolution. These methodologies have been applied to the Permo-Mesozoic succession, which crops out along the TRANSALP seismic profile. The regional distribution of the organic matter maturity seems to be mainly controlled by different burials reached during the Norian-Liassic extensional phase, in connection with high heat flow values. The best solutions obtained from thermal modelling of both vitrinite and fission-track data suggest that peak of high heat flow occurred during Bajocian–Bathonian ages, when western Tethys was characterized by intrusions of gabbros and plagiogranites and extrusion of tholeiite basalts. This time coincides with the onset of the drifting phase and related thermal subsidence. The following thermal relaxation occurred during continuous sedimentation and the maximum burial does not coincide with peak temperatures. Cooling history has been carefully analysed through apatite fission-track data on samples collected close to the Valsugana overthrust, which document an important exhumation event at about 10 Ma. The related erosion has been analysed through the combined use of arenite petrography and fission-track analysis on detrital samples of the Veneto foredeep succession, which represents the storage of detritus during Tertiary. These data confirm that after Serravalian the Southalpine domain and related covers were affected by subaerial erosion.  相似文献

During the warm seasons of 1998-2004, the naturally-acidic (pH∼2.2) Lake Caviahue was sampled for conductivity, temperature, oxygen, light, nutrients, and phytoplankton (density, biomass and chlorophyll a) with a view to studying the summer phytoplankton population changes with relation to environmental factors, as well as the significance of nitrogen limitation on the phytoplankton yield. Lake Caviahue is characterized by its low transparency, CO2, and N concentration; significant P values; a distinctive vertical distribution of phytoplankton biomass with high values along the water column; and sometimes maximum meta-hypolimnion values. Biodiversity is very low as a result of extreme environmental conditions, Chlorophyceae being the prevailing algae group. Two types of bioassays were carried out to assess nitrogen limitation. For the first bioassay, a solution of ammonium-nitrogen chloride and/or wastewater (rich in ammonium and phosphorus) was used, while one of the lake's sediments was the source of nutrients for the second bioassay. Contrary to the case of acidic mining lakes, N-ammonium proved to be a significant supportive capacity limiting factor as to phytoplankton yield. The present paper provides for the first time information on phytoplankton nitrogen limitation in a naturally-acidic lake.  相似文献

We studied the effect of supercooled cloud droplets on the diffusional growth rate of isolated ice plates and ice columns by approximating the shape of a plate as an oblate spheroid and a column as a prolate spheroid. This work is an extension of the pioneering work of Marshall and Palmer [Marshall, J.S. and Langleben, M.P., A theory of snow-crystal habit and growth, J. Met., 11, 104–120, 1954] who studied the influence of cloud droplets on the growth rate of spherical ice crystals. The vapour density field for oblate and prolate spheroids was obtained by solving Helmholtz's equation with the assumption that the vapour at the ice surface had the equilibrium value. As result, it was possible to calculate separately the temporal evolution of the axis length and the mass of the snow crystals.The results indicate that the presence of cloud droplets around the snow crystal can increase by around 10% of the ice growth rate relative to an environment free of cloud droplets. The magnitude of the growth enhancement is proportional to the liquid water content. The results also corroborate the importance of the shape and aspect ratio on the crystal growth. A general mass growth rate equation for diffusional growth was found, which incorporates effects of cloud droplets and crystal shape through the size and aspect ratio of the snow crystal.  相似文献

Constraining arc magma sources at continental arc settings is a delicate task, because chemical signatures from crustal processes obscure the slab and mantle signatures. Here, we present major, trace, and volatile element compositions of olivine-hosted melt inclusions (Fo82–89) selected from the most primitive lavas (Mg# >?60) from two Ecuadorian volcanoes (Puñalica and Sangay) situated at the southern termination of the Andean Northern Volcanic Zone. Melt inclusions (MI) from Puñalica are nepheline normative and have basaltic-to-basaltic-andesite compositions (45–56 wt% SiO2) similar to peridotite-derived melts. Sangay MI is also nepheline normative, with high CaO (up to 16 wt% and CaO/Al2O3?<?1) and low silica contents (41.9–44.5 wt%) pointing out an amphibole-bearing clinopyroxenite source. Both volcanoes display volatile-rich compositions (up to 6100 ppm Cl, 2200 ppm F, and 6700 ppm S). These MI cannot be related to their host lavas by fractional crystallization, implying that they represent true primitive liquids. The source of Puñalica MI was metasomatized by slab-derived melts that imprints its low Ba/Th, Sr/Th, and high Th/La (average values of 66, 129, and 0.22, respectively). On the contrary, the slab component added to the source of Sangay MI has a higher Ba/Th, Sr/Th, and low Th/La (average values of 261, 517, and 0.11, respectively) which could suggest a relative contribution of aqueous fluids. This dichotomy is related to the presence of the Grijalva Fracture Zone that separates a younger and hotter oceanic crust to the north (below Puñalica) from a colder and older oceanic crust to the south (below Sangay).  相似文献

Realistic modelling of marine ecosystems is necessary for improving our understanding of the ocean’s biogeochemical state and for predicting their response to anthropic perturbations. An essential step in achieving this task is the use of mechanistic formulations to describe the biogeochemical processes involved in the dynamics of marine pelagic ecosystems. This study provides a review on some modelling strategies for some of the key processes involved in the dynamics of phytoplankton. It encompasses the most advanced work in terms of mechanistic understanding and, therefore, mainly deals with photosynthesis (including photoacclimation and photoinhibition), respiration, and nutrient uptake (including multi-limitation of algal growth by nutrients). We highlight, that in many ecosystem models, phytoplankton processes are still described more or less empirically, mainly due to a lack of biochemical knowledge, or if a mechanistic formulation exists, the parameters are often difficult to assess experimentally. As a result of this investigation, a preliminary structure for a generic phytoplankton model is delivered in the last section of this paper. This model includes a mechanistic representation of photosynthesis/photoinhibition based on photosystem II status, as well as new formulations for photoacclimation and dissolved organic matter exudation processes. The model sensitivity analysis with regard to its parameters and a comparison with chemostat experimental data are presented in a companion paper [Baklouti, M., Faure, V., Pawlowski, L., Sciandra, A., 2006. Investigation and sensitivity analysis of a mechanistic phytoplankton model implemented in a new modular numerical tool (Eco3M) dedicated to biogeochemical modelling. Progress in Oceanography].
