The temperature-X CO 2-equilibrium data for the reaction 1 tremolite + 11 dolomite 8 forsterite + 13 calcite + 9 CO2 +1H2O have been determined at total pressures (P CO 2 + P H2O) of 3,000 and 5,000 bars. The results are shown in Figure 2 along with the data for the total pressure of 1,000 bars (Metz, 1967).The MgCO3 contents of the magnesian-calcites formed during the experiments agree very well with the calcite-dolomite-solvus which can be recalculated from Equation (1) and the activity coefficients for MgCO3 in magnesiancalcite as given by Gordon and Greenwood (1970).If the T-X CO 2-equilibrium data are calculated from the equilibrium constant as given by Skippen (1974), assuming ideal mixing of CO2 and H2O, good agreement is achieved for the total pressure of 1,000 bars (see Figs. 4 and 5). At a total pressure of 3,000 bars, however, the calculated equilibrium temperatures are about 40 ° C below the experimentally determined values (see Fig. 6). This difference increases up to 70 ° C for a total pressure of 5,000 bars (see Fig. 7).From the experimentally determined equilibrium conditions of the assemblage: tremolite + dolomite + forsterite + magnesian calcite (see Fig. 8) the pressure of metamorphism can be estimated if the temperature is determined by the MgCO3-content of the magnesian-calcite from the calcite-dolomite solvus. However, when using the data of Figure 8, attention has to be drawn to the limiting condition of X CO 20.2.Simplified reaction equation not considering solid solution in the carbonates  相似文献

Stoichiometric mixtures of tremolite and dolomite were heated to 50° C above equilibrium temperatures to form forsterite and calcite. The pressure of the CO2-H2O fluid was 5 Kb and \(X_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} }\) varied from 0.1 to 0.6. The extent of the conversion was determined by the amount of CO2 produced. The resulting mixtures of unreacted tremolite and dolomite and of newly-formed forsterite and calcite were examined with a scanning electron microscope. All tremolite and dolomite grains showed obvious signs of dissolution. At fluid compositions with \(X_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} }\) less than about 0.4, the forsterite and calcite crystals are randomly distributed throughout the charges, indicating that surfaces of the reactants are not a controlling factor with respect to the sites of nucleation of the products. A change is observed when \(X_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} }\) is greater than about 0.4; the forsterite and calcite crystals now nucleate and grow at the surface of the dolomite grains, thus indicating a change in mechanism at medium CO2 concentrations. As the reaction progresses, the dolomite grains become more and more surrounded by forsterite and calcite, finally forming armoured relics of dolomite. Under experimental conditions this characteristic texture can only be formed if the CO2-concentration is greater than about 40 mole %. These findings make it possible to estimate the CO2-concentration from the texture of the dolomite+tremolite+forsterite+calcite assemblage. The results suggest a dissolution-precipitation mechanism for the reaction investigated. In a simplified form it consists of the following 4 steps:
  1. Dissolution of the reactants tremolite and dolomite.
  2. Diffusion of the dissolved constituents in the fluid.
  3. Heterogeneous nucleation of the product minerals.
  4. Growth of forsterite and calcite from the fluid.
Two possible explanations are discussed for the development of the amoured texture at \(X_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} }\) above 0.4. The first is based upon the assumption that dolomite has a lower rate of dissolution than tremolite at high \(X_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} }\) values resulting in preferential calcite and forsterite nucleation and growth on the dolomite surface. An alternative explanation is the formation of a raised CO2 concentration around the dolomite grains at high \(X_{{\text{CO}}_{\text{2}} }\) values, leading to product precipitation on the dolomite crystals.  相似文献

Basaltic lava flows and high-silica rhyolite domes form the Pleistocene part of the Coso volcanic field in southeastern California. The distribution of vents maps the areal zonation inferred for the upper parts of the Coso magmatic system. Subalkalic basalts (<50% SiO2) were erupted well away from the rhyolite field at any given time. Compositional variation among these basalts can be ascribed to crystal fractionation. Erupted volumes of these basalts decrease with increasing differentiation. Mafic lavas containing up to 58% SiO2, erupted adjacent to the rhyolite field, formed by mixing of basaltic and silicic magma. Basaltic magma interacted with crustal rocks to form other SiO2-rich mafic lavas erupted near the Sierra Nevada fault zone.Several rhyolite domes in the Coso volcanic field contain sparse andesitic inclusions (55–61% SiO2). Pillow-like forms, intricate commingling and local diffusive mixing of andesite and rhyolite at contacts, concentric vesicle distribution, and crystal morphologies indicative of undercooling show that inclusions were incorporated in their rhyolitic hosts as blobs of magma. Inclusions were probably dispersed throughout small volumes of rhyolitic magma by convective (mechanical) mixing. Inclusion magma was formed by mixing (hybridization) at the interface between basaltic and rhyolitic magmas that coexisted in vertically zoned igneous systems. Relict phenocrysts and the bulk compositions of inclusions suggest that silicic endmembers were less differentiated than erupted high-silica rhyolite. Changes in inferred endmembers of magma mixtures with time suggest that the steepness of chemical gradients near the silicic/mafic interface in the zoned reservoir may have decreased as the system matured, although a high-silica rhyolitic cap persisted. The Coso example is an extreme case of large thermal and compositional contrast between inclusion and host magmas; lesser differences between intermediate composition magmas and inclusions lead to undercooling phenomena that suggest smaller T. Vertical compositional zonation in magma chambers has been documented through study of products of voluminous pyroclastic eruptions. Magmatic inclusions in volcanic rocks provide evidence for compositional zonation and mixing processes in igneous systems when only lava is erupted.  相似文献

Hypotheses related to variability in seasonal hypoxic conditions, coastal nutrient enhancement, and off-shelf transport of carbon on the Louisiana continental shelf were tested by characterization of biogenic, lithogenic, and authigenic components from two shelf and one Mississippi Canyon sediment cores. The authigenic-phase glauconite occurs above detection limits only in the core from the hypoxic area. A major increase in glauconite concentration was coincident with the onset (≈1940) of the increased use of commercial fertilizers in the United States. In the same hypoxic-area core, benthic foraminifera species diversity decreases upcore from approximately the turn of the century to the present in a manner concurrent with glauconite and fertilizer increases. A subset of opportunistic benthic foraminifera species, known to become more prominent in stressed environments (i.e., hypoxic), increased upcore from ~52% of the total population at core bottom to ≈90% at core top. These benthic foraminifera population and diversity changes were not apparent in a “control” core outside the area of documented hypoxia. Seaward of the shelf, in the Mississippi Canyon, coincident increases in sediment accumulation rate, percentages of coarse fraction and of organic carbon at core top indicate increased offshelf transport of carbon and other components. Quartz percentages indicate that episodic down-canyon transport has been active to core bottom (prior to the mid 1800s).  相似文献

The spatial distributions of the most recently discovered ultra-faint dwarf satellites around the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy are compared to the previously reported discs-of-satellites (DoS) of their host galaxies. In our investigation, we pay special attention to the selection bias introduced due to the limited sky coverage of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We find that the new Milky Way satellite galaxies follow closely the DoS defined by the more luminous dwarfs, thereby further emphasizing the statistical significance of this feature in the Galactic halo. We also note a deficit of satellite galaxies with Galactocentric distances larger than  100 kpc  that are away from the DoS of the Milky Way. In the case of Andromeda, we obtain similar results, naturally complementing our previous finding and strengthening the notion that the DoS are optical manifestations of a phase-space correlation of satellite galaxies.  相似文献

Oosparite grainstones of the Pleistocene Ironshore Formation, Little Cayman, British West Indies, contain the trace fossils Conichnus conicus, Ophiomorpha nodosa, and Planolites beverleyensis. The dominance of vertically-oriented trace fossils, complexity of cross-stratifications, coarseness of the sediment channel fill, and presence of several rudstone layers suggest deposition close to the seaward portion of lagoonal channels where higher energy conditions prevailed.  相似文献

Stoichiometry of smectite dissolution reaction   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The dissolution stoichiometry of smectite-rich bentonites SAz-1, STx-1 and SWy-1 was studied at 50°C and pH 2 and 3 using flow-through reactors. In addition to smectite, these samples contain considerable amounts of silica phases (quartz, cristobalite and/or amorphous silica). As a result, the molar Al/Si ratios of the bulk samples are significantly lower than those of the pure smectite.Smectite dissolution was highly incongruent during the first few hundred to few thousand hours of the experiments. Release rates of Si, Mg, Ca and Na underwent a distinct transition from an initial period of rapid release to significantly lower release rate at steady state. A reversed trend was observed for release of Al, which gradually increased from very low starting release rate to higher release rate at steady state. At steady state the ratio of released Al to released Si was found to be constant and independent of the experimental conditions. We suggest that this ratio represents the Al/Si ratio of the smectite itself, and it is not influenced by the presence of accessory phases in the sample. The rapid release of calcium, sodium and magnesium from the interlayer sites is explained by ion-exchange reactions, whereas the fast release of silicon is explained by dissolution of amorphous silica. We interpret the initial slow release of Al as the result of inhibition of smectite dissolution due to coating or cementation of the smectite aggregates by amorphous silica. As the silica is dissolved, the aggregates fall apart and more smectite surfaces are exposed, resulting in an increase in the smectite dissolution rate. Thereafter, the system approaches steady state, in which the major tetrahedral and octahedral cations of smectite are released congruently.  相似文献

Glass Mountain, California, consists of >50 km3 of high-silica rhyolite lavas and associated pyroclastic deposits that erupted over a period of >1 my preceding explosive eruption of the Bishop Tuff and formation of the Long Valley caldera at 0.73 Ma. These “minimum-melt” rhyolites yield Fe-Ti-oxide temperatures of 695–718°C and contain sparse phenocrysts of plagioclase+quartz+magnetite+apatite±sanidine, biotite, ilmenite, allanite, and zircon. Incompatible trace elements show similar or larger ranges within the Glass Mountain suite than within the Bishop Tuff, despite a much smaller range of major-element concentrations, largely due to variability among the older lavas (erupted between 2.1 and 1.2 Ma). Ratios of the most incompatible elements have larger ranges in the older lavas than in the younger lavas (1.2–0.79 Ma), and concentrations of incompatible elements span wide ranges at nearly constant Ce/Yb, suggesting that the highest concentrations of these elements are not the result of extensive fractional crystallization alone; rather, they are inherited from parental magmas with a larger proportion of crustal partial melt. Evidence for the nature of this crustal component comes from the presence of scarce, tiny xenocrysts derived from granitic and greenschist-grade metamorphic rocks. The wider range of chemical and isotopic compositions in the older lavas, the larger range in phenocryst modes, the eruption of magmas with different compositions at nearly the same time in different parts of the field, and the smaller volume of individual lavas suggest either that more than one magma body was tapped during eruption of the older lavas or that a single chamber tapped by all lavas was small enough that the composition of its upper reaches easily affected by new additions of crustal melts. We interpret the relative chemical, mineralogical, and isotopic homogeneity of the younger Glass Mountain lavas as reflecting eruptions from a large, integrated magma chamber. The small number of cruptions between 1.4 and 1.2 ma may have allowed time for a large magma body to coalesce, and, as the chamber grew, its upper reaches became less affected by new inputs of crustal melts, so that trace-element trends in magmas erupted after 1.2 Ma are largely controlled by fractional crystallization. The extremely low Sr concentrations of Glass Mountain lavas imply extensive crystallization in chambers at least hundreds of cubic kilometers in volume. The close similarity in Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic ratios between the younger Glass Mountain lavas and unaltered Bishop Tuff indicates that they tapped the same body of magma, which had become isotopically homogenous by 1.2 Ma but continued to differentiate after that time. From 1.2 to 0.79 Ma, volumetric eruptive rates may have exceeded rates of differentiation, as younger Glass Mountain lavas become slightly less evolved with time. Early-erupted Bishop Tuff is more evolved than the youngest of the Glass Mountain lavas and is characterized by slightly different trace element ratios. This suggests that although magma had been present for 0.5 my, the composiional gradient exhibited by the Bishop Tuff had not been a long-term, steady-state condition in the Long Valley magma chamber, but developed at least in part during the 0.06-my hiatus between extrusion of the last Glass Mountain lava and the climactic eruption.  相似文献

The mechanism of the reaction 1 tremolite +3 calcite+2 quartz=5 diopside+3 CO2+1 H2O was investigated at 2 and 5 kb, , using powder experiments lasting from 14 to 170 days. Because experiments were at high ratios of fluid to solids, the study identified the mechanism under surface-control conditions and thus establishes which reactant surface determines the kinetics. To achieve a diopside nucleation rate high enough to gain detectable reaction in the time of experimentation, the equilibrium boundary had to be overstepped by 30°–60° C at 5 kb. Experiments in which diopside successfully nucleated show that the reaction proceeds by a dissolution-crystallization mechanism. Experimentally-produced textures are presented in a series of SEM images and demonstrate that diopside nucleates and grows topotactically exclusively on tremolite. The mechanism of the forward reaction is modeled by a simplified scheme consisting of three processes, each comprising formation, transport and incorporation of 1) the Ca-, 2) the Mg-, and 3) the Si-bearing species in the fluid in response to dissolution of the reactants and crystallization of diopside. Using the dependence of the overall-reaction rate on the surface area of the reactants, it was experimentally determined that process 2) (dissolution of tremolite, transport of the Mg-bearing species in the fluid and crystallization of diopside) will be rate-limiting in most cases where metamorphism occurs in an internally controlled system. Due to the experimental design chosen, the dissolution of tremolite at the beginning of process 2) is rate-limiting in the experiments. The magnitude of the probable temperature-overstep necessary to achieve a significant nucleation rate during metamorphism is discussed on the basis of the experimental evidence and a simple nucleation rate model.  相似文献
