This study was designed to investigate the effect of light and temperature on Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios in the skeleton of the coral Acropora sp. for the purpose of evaluating temperature proxies for paleoceanographic applications. In the first experiment, corals were cultivated under three light levels (100, 200, 400 μmol photons m−2 s−1) and constant temperature (27 °C). In the second experiment, corals were cultivated at five temperatures (21, 23, 25, 27, 29 °C) and constant light (400 μmol photons m−2 s−1). Increasing the water temperature from 21 to 29 °C, induced a 5.7-fold increase in the rate of calcification, which induced a 30% increase in the Mg/Ca ratio. In contrast, by increasing the light level by a factor of 4, the rate of calcification was increased only by a factor of 1.7, with a corresponding 9% increase in the Mg/Ca ratio. Thus, the relative change in the calcification rate in the two experiments (5.7 vs. 1.7) scales with the corresponding relative change in Mg/Ca ratio (30% vs. 9%). We conclude that there is a strong biological control on the incorporation of Mg.For Sr/Ca, good correlations were also observed with water temperature and the calcification rate induced by temperature changes. However, in sharp contrast with the Mg/Ca ratio, a temperature-induced 5.7-fold increase in the calcification rate only induced a 4.5% change (decrease) in the Sr/Ca ratio. An important finding for paleoceanographic applications is that the Sr/Ca ratio did not appear to be sensitive to changes in the light level, or to changes in calcification rate induced by changes in the light level. Thus, in this study, water temperature was found to be the dominant parameter controlling the skeletal Sr/Ca ratio.  相似文献

On Thursday, 22 of May 2014, at 6 h 22 min 0.3.3 s (GMT?+?1) a moderate-sized earthquake struck the Mostaganem, Western Algeria, region. The main shock, recorded by many international and national seismological stations, was preceded by a foreshock, 3 hours before, on May 22, 2014 (Ml?=?4.1) at 3 h 57 min 41.4 s and followed by four well-felt aftershocks (M?>?3.0) that lasted about 1 year. The main shock did not cause loss of lives but serious panic among the population was reported. The main shock, however, caused cracks in walls and roofs, sometimes destroyed, the old non-engineered and precarious adobe dweller corresponding to I0?=?VI–VII (Msk scale). We used accelerograph records to (i) determine the epicenter location (longitude?=?0.3537 E, latitude?=?35.8598 N, (ii) perform waveforms inversion to calculate the earthquake parameters. The obtained results are, respectively, the seismic moment (M0)?=?2.71 E + 16, the Mw?=?4.9 and the focal depth?=?6 km. The obtained focal mechanism solution shows reverse faulting with small right lateral component with the following nodal plans: NP1, strike?=?193.5, dip?=?49.5, slip?=?57.6 and NP2, strike?=?57.8, dip?=?50, slip?=?122.1. On the other hand, the seismotectonic framework of the Dahra area exhibits a serie of NE-SW trending “en echelon” faulted folds that may be active as suggested by this study.  相似文献

NanoSIMS is a relatively new technology that is being applied to ancient carbonaceous structures to gain insight into their biogenicity and syngeneity. NanoSIMS studies of well preserved organic microfossils from the Neoproterozoic (0.8 Ga) Bitter Springs Formation have established elemental distributions in undisputedly biogenic structures. Results demonstrate that sub-micron scale maps of metabolically important elements (carbon [C], nitrogen [measured as CN ion], and sulfur [S]) can be correlated with kerogenous structures identified by optical microscopy. Spatial distributions of C, CN, and S in individual microfossils are nearly identical, and variations in concentrations of these elements parallel one another. In elemental maps, C, CN, and S appear as globules, aligned to form remnant walls or sheaths of fossiliferous structures. The aligned character and parallel variation of C and CN are the strongest indicators of biogenicity.Nitrogen/carbon atomic ratios (N/C) of spheroids, filaments, and remnants of a microbial mat suggest that N/C may reflect original biochemical differences, within samples of the same age and degree of alteration. Silicon (Si) and oxygen (O) maps illustrate that silica is intimately interspersed with organic carbon of the microfossils. This relationship is likely to reflect the process of silica permineralization of biological remains and thus may be an indicator of syngeneity of the fossilized material with the mineral matrix. The NanoSIMS characterization of Bitter Springs microfossils can be used as a baseline for interpreting less well preserved carbonaceous structures that might occur in older or even extraterrestrial materials. An example of such an application is provided by comparison of Bitter Springs results with NanoSIMS of Archaean carbonaceous structures from Western Australia, including a spheroid in the 3 Ga Farrel Quartzite and material in a secondary vein in the 3.43 Ga Strelley Pool Chert. Results reinforce a biogenic, syngenetic interpretation for the Archaean spheroid.NanoSIMS has several advantages in the study of ancient organic materials: the technique allows characterization of extremely small structures that are present in low concentrations; organic matter does not have to be isolated by acid treatment but can be analyzed in polished thin section; preparation is simple; samples are minimally altered during analysis; results provide sub-micron scale spatial distribution coupled with concentration information for at least five elements; the biologically important elements of carbon and nitrogen can be assessed; and the ability to study organic remains in situ permits petrographic assessment of spatial relationships between organic matter and mineral constituents. These advantages could be of significant benefit for interpretation of poorly preserved and fragmentary carbonaceous remains that might occur in some of Earth's oldest samples as well as in meteorites or extraterrestrial material brought to Earth in future planetary missions.  相似文献

We have undertaken a pilot survey for faint quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Survey (UKIDSS) Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) Field using the KX selection technique. These observations exploit the very deep near-infrared and optical imaging of this field from United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) and Subaru to select candidate QSOs based on their VJK colours and morphologies. We determined redshifts for 426 candidates using the AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope in service time. We identify 17 QSOs  ( M B ≲−23)  in this pilot survey at z = 1.57–3.29. We combine our sample with an X-ray-selected sample of QSOs in the same field (a large fraction of which also comply with our KX selection) to constrain the surface density of QSOs with K ≤ 20, deriving limits on the likely surface density of 85–150 deg−2. We use the good image quality available from our near-infrared imaging to detect a spatially extended component of the QSO light which probably represents the host galaxies. We also use our sample to investigate routes to improve the selection of KX QSOs at faint limits in the face of the significant contamination by compact, foreground galaxies. The brightest examples from our combined QSO sample will be used in conjunction with a large Very Large Telescope VIMOS spectroscopic survey of high-redshift galaxies in this region to study the structures inhabited by gas, galaxies and growing supermassive black holes at high redshifts in the UKIDSS UDS.  相似文献
