Vaterite, a rare hexagonal CaCO3 polymorph, was identified in precipitates forming at a supraglacial sulfur spring, in Borup Fiord Pass, northern Ellesmere Island, Canadian High Arctic. Vaterite occurs in a precipitate mound along with calcite, gypsum, and native sulfur. The unusual conditions of the site, including an extremely cold climate, supersaturated alkaline waters, and the presence of gypsum, mimics conditions used to grow vaterite in laboratory experiments. Stable isotope data suggest that vaterite may preferentially form during colder periods of the year. Vaterite found at the site is characterized by 2- to 10-μm rounded to spherical shaped particles (comprising smaller 0.5- to 2-μm spheres) as both individuals and in chainlike structures. The spherical habit of vaterite resembles carbonate structures that have been interpreted to be organic; however, δ13C values are indicative of an inorganic origin. The thick permafrost, and the extreme cold and dry environment make this site a good terrestrial analog for carbonate precipitates that might be expected at potential deposits associated with water discharge on other planetary bodies.  相似文献

An integrated assessment is presented of the potential impacts of the cattle tick (Boophilus microplus Canestrini) on the Australian beefindustry under climate change. The project was carried out as a case study to test an impact assessment approach that was designed to integrate biological, production and socio-economic impacts on managed and natural systems. A climate-driven, tick population model was run for European, zebu and crossbred cattle breeds having different levels of resistance to cattle ticks. A geographical information system (GIS) was used to organise spatial data on climate scenarios and industry statistics and to undertake regional analyses.A comparison was made of the two available approaches to conducting impact assessments, namely a bottom-up approach using sensitivity analysis and a top-down approach using climate change scenarios from a global circulation model (GCM) (CSIRO, 1996). The output, in terms of the abundance of tick populations and reductions in cattle productivity for each breed showed significant expansions in potential geographical impacts. In the absence of any adaptation measures, the results indicated changes in the losses in live weight gain of cattle tick ranging from 7780 tonnes per year by 2030 to 21637 tonnes per year by 2100, in comparison with estimates for current losses of 6594 tonnes per year.The principal adaptation options available to the beef industry are to switch to breeds that are more resistant to cattle ticks, or to increase the frequency of treatments with various tick control products. In this paper we focus on switching breeds as an adaptive measure when appropriate damage thresholds are triggered under the climate change scenarios. When adaptation measures were put in place, the losses ranged from 4962 tonnes in 2030 to 5619 tonnes in 2100 compared with 2636 tonnes at present if all producers adopted the optimal breed structure. Optimal breed structure was defined as one that would prevent tick numbers per animal exceeding 100 ticks per animal for European and 700 ticks per animal for crossbred breeds of cattle in any week of the year under a tick control strategy that was suitable for present climatic conditions. The lower threshold for European breeds reflects their vulnerability to explosive increases in numbers because of their low resistance to ticks. The results of the analyses using the GCM scenarios were used in an economic model to calculate costs of lost live-weight gain for 2030, 2070 and 2100. The greatest increases in costs were incurred in the southern parts of the current distribution in Queensland and potentially in northern New South Wales if the present quarantine barrier failed.Given the great uncertainty of the nature of possible regional changes in climate, analyses of the sensitivity of losses in live weight gain to changes in climatic variables were also undertaken. The analyses included a measure of likely impacts of cattle tick on the beef cattle industry, in the absence of adaptation measures, as a baseline measure of sensitivity. The likely impacts on crossbred cattle were insensitive to the climatic variables.When adaptive breed changes were allowed, the economic impacts on the industry were insensitive to the GCM scenarios. This suggests that, at least in this instance, reducing the uncertainties in climate change scenarios is not a priority if the adaptation strategies can be implemented in a cost-effective manner. Finally we made a qualitative assessment of the sustainability and robustness of alternative approaches to adaptation and assessed regional vulnerability to cattle tick under climate change. The conclusions were so strongly dependent on assumptions about the future of other global changes, in particular the ability to maintain quarantine barriers and to retain effective acaricides at comparable costs to the present, that we strongly recommend that risk assessments of climate change extend to all relevant variables in involved in global change where possible.  相似文献

Fossiliferous silts within the Late Pleistocene Kempton Park Gravel, of the River Thames Valley, were exposed in 1980 during foundation works for the Ismaili Centre in South Kensington, London. The results of a multidisciplinary study of the geomorphology, sediments, fossil plants, vertebrates, molluscs, ostracods and insects are reported. The silts were deposited under two distinct climatic regimes; a lower unit accumulated when the climate was arctic and an upper when the temperatures were at least as warm as those of the present day. Both these units occupy the same channel system and are separated from one another by less than a metre of sediment, implying that the climatic change was probably sudden and intense. The strongest evidence for this climatic difference comes from a study of the Coleoptera, which show an almost complete replacement of the arctic element in the fauna by a suite of temperate species. Palaeotemperature reconstructions using the Mutual Climatic Range method, based on the coleopteran assemblages from the lower unit, suggest that the mean temperature of the warmest month was 9±2 °C and that of the coldest month −22±10 °C. For the upper unit the mean temperature of the warmest month had risen to about 17 °C and that of the coldest month to about −4 °C. The episode represented by the lower unit, with its arctic climate, had not previously been recognized in the Thames Valley. The fauna from the upper, temperate, unit is very similar to that from other sites in the Kempton Park Gravel, such as that from Isleworth, 10 km upriver, which, like the upper unit at the Ismaili Centre, was characterized by the virtual absence of trees. It would appear that in such cases this treelessness does not indicate cold conditions, equivalent to those of the modern tundra, but may instead result from a combination of ecological and temporal factors. The value of multidisciplinary studies in reaching such conclusions is emphasized.The temperate episode described here is correlated with the thermal maximum at the early part of the Upton Warren Interstadial Complex. An earlier suggestion, based on amino acid epimerization ratios, that the Upton Warren Interstadial correlates with Oxygen Isotope Sub-stage 5a is not supported by the data, which show no evidence of the forested environments that characterized this period in both Britain and the adjacent Continent. It is thought that the temperate deposits at the Ismaili Centre belong to the Middle (Pleniglacial), rather than the Early, Devensian (Weichselian) and are equivalent to Oxygen Isotope Stage 3.  相似文献

A new technique for the in situ analysis of Re, Au, Pd, Pt and Rh in natural basalt glass by laser ablation (LA)-ICP-MS is described. The method involves external calibration against NIST SRM 612/613 or 614/615 glass certified reference materials, internal standardisation using Ca, and ablation with a 200 μm wide beam spot and a pulsed laser repetition rate of 50 Hz. Under these conditions, sensitivities for Re, Au, Pd, Pt and Rh analyte ions are ˜ 5000 to 100,000 cps/μg g-1. This is sufficient to make measurements precise to ˜ 10% at the 2-10 μg g-1 level, which is well within the range of concentrations expected in many basalts. For LA-ICP-MS calibration and a demonstration of the accuracy of the technique, concentrations of Re, Au, Pd, Pt and Rh in the NIST SRM 610/611 (˜ 1 to 50 μg g-1), 612/613 (˜ 1 to 7 μg g-1), 614/615 (˜ 0.2 to 2 μg g-1) and 616/617 (˜ 0.004 to 2 μg g-1) glasses were determined by solution-nebulisation (SN)-ICP-MS. Using the 612/613 or 614/615 glasses as calibration standards, LA-ICP-MS measurements of these elements in the other NIST glasses fell within ˜ 15% of those determined by SN-ICP-MS. Replicate LA-ICP-MS analyses of the 612/613 and 614/615 glasses indicate that, apart from certain anomalous domains, the glasses are homogeneous for Re, Au, Pd, Pt and Rh to better than 3.5%. Two LA-ICP-MS analyses of natural, island-arc basalt glasses exhibit large fractionations of Re, Au and Pd relative to Pt and Rh, compared to the relative abundances in the primitive mantle.  相似文献

Basaltic lavas from the AMAR Valley and the Narrowgate region of the FAMOUS Valley on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (36° to 37°?N) range in texture from aphyric to highly plagioclase phyric (>25% large plagioclase phenocrysts). Based on 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd ratios, most of these lavas can be subdivided into two distinct, isotopically homogeneous, groups: Group I has lower 87Sr/86Sr (0.70288±1) and higher 143Nd/144Nd (0.51312±1) ratios; Group II has higher 87Sr/86Sr (0.70296±1) and lower 143Nd/144Nd (0.51309±2) ratios. Most Group II lavas are aphyric, whereas Group I lavas are primarily plagioclase phyric. Lavas from both groups show a wide range in incompatible element abundance ratios (e.g., Zr/Nb =6–29; (La/Sm)n=0.6–1.7). Aphyric lavas have relatively constant Sc (40±1.5?ppm) abundances and CaO/Al2O3 ratios (0.80±0.02). Group I lavas are confined primarily to the AMAR rift valley floor whereas Group II lavas are found along the east and west marginal highs. We interpret the isotopic differences between the two groups as reflecting a temporal change in the upwelling mantle beneath this region of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge which is south of the Azore Islands. For each group, a petrogenetic model consistent with the geochemical data is multi-stage decompression melting of an initially enriched, homogeneous, mantle source region. If the early derived, incompatible-element enriched, melt increments are not always pooled with subsequent increments, the erupted magma batches may have the major element characteristics of melts derived by 10 to 20% melting, but with incompatible element abundance ratios reflecting the change from an enriched to depleted source during the incremental melting process. In this process an initially homogeneous source can generate primary magmas with the required range in incompatible element abundance ratios shown by each group. The nearly constant CaO/Al2O3 ratios and Sc contents of the aphyric lavas with decreasing Mg?? reflects subsequent polybaric fractionation of clinopyroxene, plagioclase and olivine over the pressure interval 8–6?kbar (24–18?km), followed by rapid transport to the surface and eruption. There is no geochemical evidence for a crustal magma chamber beneath this section of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.  相似文献

Summary The granites of the Sistema Central Espanol are richer in ammonium than those of most other regions, and have a mean NH4 + content of 84 ppm (range = 1–243 ppm). Among the possible causes for the high level of ammonium, a high proportion of organic-rich pelitic protolith and reducing conditions during anatexis are considered to be the most significant. The behaviour of the ammonium ion during magmatic differentiation is discussed by reference to its distribution in the Pedrobernardo layered intrusion: ammonium is depleted in the final liquid fraction, but there is no relative fractionation of NH4 + and K+. The depletion of the melt in NH4 + during crystallization is attributed to its removal by biotite and to a lesser extent by K-feldspar. The behaviour of the ammonium ion during anatexis is discussed with reference to the Peña Negra migmatite complex. It is shown that large amounts of NH4 + are present in these high grade metamorphic rocks, and that NH4 + is preferentially partitioned into the restite fraction during partial melting. These relationships are attributed to the preferential incorporation of NH4 + into potassic host minerals in the order: biotite > muscovite > K-feldspar.

Zusammenfassung Die Granite des Sistema Central Espanol sind reicher an Ammonium als die der meisten anderen Regionen, und haben einen durchschnittlichen NH4 + Gehalt von 84 ppm (von 1-243 ppm). Der hohe Ammoniumgehalt könme auf einen hohen Anteil peiitischer Ausgangsgesteine, die reich an organischen Material sind, and auf reduzierende Bedingungen während der Anatexis zurückgehen. Das Verhalten des Ammonium-Ions während magmatischer Differentiation wind in Hinblick seiner Verteilung in der geschichteten Intrusion von Pedrobernardo diskutiert: Ammonium ist in der finalen Schmelzfraktion angereichert, aber es gibt keine relative Fraktionierung von NH4 + and K+. Die Verarmung der Schmelze an NH4 + wahrend der Kristallisation geht darauf zurück, daß NH4 + von Biotit and in einem geringen Ausmaß von K-Feldspat aufgenommen wird. Das Verhalten des Ammonium-Ions während der Anatexis wird am Peña Negra Migmatit-Komplex diskutiert. The δ13C of organic matter bound within the crystal lattice of foraminiferal calcite tests may provide a potential tracer of the isotopic composition of the surface water primary photosynthate. Using δ13C of the organic matter extracted from the crystal lattice and the calcite test, it is theoretically possible to estimate the paleo-surface water pCO2. We have tailored this technique initially for the subpolar planktonic foraminifera species Globigerina bulloides. Initial surface water pCO2 estimates from deep-sea core BOFS 5K (50°41.3′N, 21°51.9′W, water depth 3547 m) indicate that the northeast Atlantic Ocean may have been a greater sink for CO2 during the last glacial than during the Holocene. Greatly reduced benthic foraminifera abundances, especially phytodetritus feeders, in BOFS 5K during the last glacial indicates low surface productivity. This rules out a productivity-driven CO2 sink. The enhanced glacial CO2 sink must, therefore, have results from a southwards shift of the centre of deep water formation.  相似文献

The normal grain growth behaviour of four different, but all nominally pure, calcite powders (99%+ analytic grade calcite, 99.7% chalk, 99.97% crushed Iceland Spar, 99.95%+ chelometric grade calcite) has been investigated as a function of temperature (550, 600, 650, 700 °C) and confining pressure (100, 190 MPa) under both “dry” and hydrostatic (P fluid = P total) conditions. The initial particle size of both the analytic grade and chelometric grade calcite was about 5 μm, and that of the chalk was about 3 μm, while the experiments on the Iceland Spar were conducted on powders of three different initial particle sizes (3.4, 7.5, 38.5 μm). On each material, at each pressure/temperature condition 6 to 15 experiments, equally spaced in log time from 15 minutes to 50 days, were conducted. Under dry conditions all four materials recrystallized to aggregates which contained less than 2% porosity and which had a grain size of between 4 and 20 μm (depending on the initial particle size). Subsequently the aggregates coarsened by normal grain growth, with the kinetics of the growth process being controlled by the rate at which the grain boundaries could drag the residual pores with them as they migrated. Under nominally identical conditions both the mechanism and rates of pore drag differed greatly for the different materials, implying that this process is highly sensitive to trace solute impurity concentrations. This sensitivity renders the task of providing a systematic account of dry calcite grain growth kinetics highly problematic. Under hydrostatic conditions all the powders followed the same normal grain growth kinetics in which the growth process was rate-controlled by diffusion through the pore fluid on the grain boundaries. An activation enthalpy of 162.6 kJ mol−1 and an activation volume of 34.35 cm3 mol−1 was obtained for this process. Received: 23 May 1996 / Accepted: 8 July 1997  相似文献

The Mount Raymond transverse zone (MRTZ) forms the east-west-trending boundary between the Wyoming salient of the Sevier fold-thrust belt and the Uinta/Cottonwood arch in north-central Utah. Major faults in the zone dip 40° to 45° north. Our structural analysis indicates that the MRTZ contains both contractional and extensional structures. The contractional structures (thrusts and related folds) initially formed as part of a southeast-verging, northeast-trending thrust system. This system gradually curved and merged to the north with the east-verging Absaroka thrust system in the apex of the Wyoming salient. The contrast in trend between structures in the MRTZ and those in the apex of the Wyoming salient reflects the initial curvature of the salient. This curve formed because the stratigraphic sequence involved in thrusting thinned gradually southward, toward the axis of a proto-Uinta arch. The present east-west trend of the MRTZ developed during Laramide uplift of the Unita/Cottonwood arch, an event which tilted the faults into their present position. Cenozoic crustal extension subsequently reactivated segments of the MRTZ. In sum, the evolution of the MRTZ illustrates how post-thrusting processes can affect the map-view geometry of thrust belts to create transverse zones.  相似文献
