Trends in fog frequencies in the Los Angeles Basin 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Data from throughout the Los Angeles area were examined to determine the horizontal distribution of dense fog (visibility < 400 m) in the region and trends over time. The relationship between the occurrence of dense fog to the phase of two atmosphere–ocean cycles: the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) measured by the PDO Index and the Southern Oscillation measured by the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) was investigated. In addition, the influence of the urban heat island and the amount of suspended particulate matter were assessed. For the three stations that had 22 or more years of data, we examined trends and the relation to atmosphere–ocean cycles. Results show a decrease in the occurrence of very low visibilities (< 400 m) at the stations in close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Long Beach International Airport (LGB). Occurrence of the frequency of low visibilities at these two locations was also highly correlated with the phase of the PDO. Only a weak, non-statistically significant relationship was seen with the SOI. At Burbank, a reporting station about 30 km from the ocean, no trends were noted, and there was no evidence of a correlation with either the PDO Index or the SOI. In the Los Angeles Central Business District (CBD) when comparing dense fog occurrence in the early 1960s to a similar period in the early 2000s we saw a decrease in dense fog from a mean of 10 h per year to a mean of 3 h per year. Also contributing to the decrease was decreasing particulate pollution and increased urban warming. A downward trend in particulate concentrations coupled with an upward trend in urban temperatures were associated with a decrease in dense fog occurrence at both LAX and LGB. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is a powerful statistical technique for making inferences about experiments that are influenced by multiple factors. Whilst common in many other scientific fields, its use within the climate community has been limited to date. Here we review the basis for ANOVA and how, in particular, it can be applied to partition the variance in a multi-model ensemble of Atmospheric General Circulation Model simulations. We examine an ensemble of four AGCMs forced with observed twentieth century sea surface temperatures (SST). We show that the dominant contributions to the total variance of seasonal mean sea level pressure arise from between-model differences (the bias term) and internal noise (the noise term). However, which term is most important varies from region to region. Of particular interest is the interaction term, which describes differences between the models in their responses to common SST forcing. The interaction term is found to be largest over the Indian Ocean (in all seasons), and over the subtropical Northwest Pacific in boreal summer. The differences between the model responses in these regions suggest differences in their simulation of atmospheric teleconnections, with potentially important implications, e.g. for seasonal predictions of the South and East Asian Monsoons. Examination of these differences may lead to an understanding of the reasons why models respond differently to common forcing, and ultimately to improvements in the performance of climate models. 相似文献

We have cross-matched the 1.4-GHz NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) with the first 210 fields observed in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS), covering an effective area of 325 deg2 (about 20 per cent of the final 2dFGRS area). This yields a set of optical spectra of 912 candidate NVSS counterparts, of which we identify 757 as genuine radio identifications – the largest and most homogeneous set of radio source spectra ever obtained. The 2dFGRS radio sources span the redshift range to 0.438, and are a mixture of active galaxies (60 per cent) and star-forming galaxies (40 per cent). About 25 per cent of the 2dFGRS radio sources are spatially resolved by NVSS, and the sample includes three giant radio galaxies with projected linear size greater than 1 Mpc. The high quality of the 2dF spectra means we can usually distinguish unambiguously between AGN and star-forming galaxies. The effects of F-region neutral winds on the distribution of He+ in the equatorial ionosphere have been examined using a theoretical model and an observational data set. It is shown by the model that components of neutral wind in the magnetic meridian up to only 50 m s? can produce He+ gradients in the northern and southern sectors of a flux tube that differ by more than 80%. This is associated with interhemisphere transport velocities of He+ as large as 15 m s?1 at 800 km. A substantial latitude gradient in the He+ distribution across the dip equator also results from the redistribution of He+ The changes in the He+ concentration at the dip equator and the latitude distribution of He+ in response to different neutral wind components is determined from the model and used to construct longitude distributions of He+ to compare with observations made at equinox. Good agreement between the calculations and observations is obtained both at the geographic and geomagnetic equators using the relationship between neutral winds, interhemispheric transport velocity and He+ concentration derived from the model. If these relationships can be extrapolated to accommodate the different conditions expected during solstice, we can also discuss the He+ distributions expected during this season. 相似文献

Point-source synthetic seismic responses for a thin, fractured bed are generated, interpreted and processed. The synthesis is carried out for a compressional source and multicomponent surface receivers. The anisotropy considered has hexagonal symmetry, with a horizontal symmetry axis, and represents oil- and gas-filled, aligned vertical fractures for a broad range of fracture densities and aspect ratios. P-to-S reflected conversions recorded on the horizontal geophones show both kinematic and dynamic anomalies that increase with increasing fracture density and are only weakly dependent on aspect ratio. In contrast, the vertical component P-wave reflections provide a much poorer diagnostic of fracturing. Analytic expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a vertically fractured system are presented, that have the same simplicity as those for transverse isotropy. New linearized expressions for mode-converted amplitudes are developed for small angles of incidence and are used to interpret the synthetic response. 相似文献
