Concentrations of cobalt (Co) in surface waters from the Sagami River to northern Sagami Bay and from the Yura River to southwestern Wakasa Bay in Japan were determined in order to investigate the factors governing the distribution of this metal during estuarine mixing. Dissolved (<0.2 μm) and particulate (>0.2 μm) Co showed non-conservative mixing behavior with low or mid-salinity maxima within those two estuarine regions, indicating benthic remobilization and/or sewage input apart from riverine input during the estuarine mixing. These results are supported by a suite of complementary measurements of other parameters, such as manganese, phosphate, and suspended particulate matter concentrations. In addition, the concentration ratio of dissolved Co to total Co (dissolved plus particulate) increased along the salinity gradient, implying the potential for desorption of this metal from suspended particulate matter on estuarine mixing.  相似文献

Fluorescence and UV‐VIS techniques were employed for the investigation of natural organic matter (NOM) of a tropical lake. The relationships of absorbance/dissolved organic carbon (A/DOC), fluorescence intensity/dissolved organic carbon (FI/DOC), fluorescence ratio (FR), and peak wavelength with the highest intensity (PW) were used to distinguish the pedogenic or aquagenic origin of NOM. The values of FR, PW and A285/DOC of high waters (HW) or flooded period samples and of low waters (LW) period samples of the dry season, except for September 2002, confirm the predominance of pedogenic material. The spectra of water were similar to the standard fulvic acid (FA), and the spectra of FA from the lake were similar to the nearby soils, indicative of pedogenic predominance. The results confirm that the dissolved NOM of Patos Lagoon – MS (Brazil), in all sampling periods, predominantly consisted of humic substances (FA) of pedogenic origin.  相似文献

To carry out comparative geochemical investigation of refractory and reactive metals in different oceanic settings covering different θ-S characteristics, productivity, dissolved oxygen profiles, water and sediment discharge, etc., we have determined the vertical profiles of dissolved (<0.04 μm) Al, In and Ce, as well as 210Pb and 210Po in the eastern Indian Ocean (from 40°S in the Southern Ocean to 8°N in the Bay of Bengal) and the Southeast Asian Seas. In the Antarctic Circumpolar Region, the concentrations of these refractory metals are very low, presumably due to very low the atmospheric input and intensified scavenging. Resemblance in the vertical profiles of these metals is often seen in some other stations. However, there are also significant differences among their distributions, for example, in the magnitude of surface enrichment caused by the external input from eolian and fluvial-coastal sources. Comparison of Al distributions in surface waters with those of atmospherically derived 210Pb suggests the relative importance of eolian input over fluvial-coastal sources. Fluvial and coastal input appears to be insignificant for dissolved In, but may be important for Ce. The mean residence time of Al in the surface mixed layer was estimated to be ∼2 years which is similar to that of 210Pb.In the intermediate and deep waters, the concentrations of each element vary with depth and location. The range of variation is in the order of Al>Ce>In, depending upon particle reactivity. Although dissolved Al decreases along the water trajectory by particle scavenging, variations of dissolved In and Ce are relatively small which may be due to less scavenging for both elements. Compared with significantly high (>4 pM) dissolved Ce throughout the water column in the Bay of Bengal, dissolved Al concentration remains low, suggesting that it has higher affinity to particles and hence is scavenged by sinking particulate matter. This is consistent with the observation that the dissolved Al in the Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) decreases from 4 to 6 nM in the 30°S Perth Basin to <0.7 nM in the 10°S West Australia Basin along its trajectory. Using the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) ventilation age of AAIW (Fine, 1993), the mean residence time of Al in the intermediate and deep waters in the eastern Indian Ocean is estimated to be <17 yr, approximately the same as that of 210Pb (10-15 yr). In the semiclosed basins of Southeast Asia, the distributions of Al, In and Ce are also very unique. In the South China Sea, there is a strong sediment source for dissolved In and Ce during the deepwater passage through the Luzon Strait.  相似文献

A modal analysis procedure based on an FE–BE method in the time domain is first formulated and then applied to a dam–foundation system. In the application, horizontal and vertical impulsive responses are calculated for the system having six different impedance ratios. Modal characteristics such as natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes are evaluated from the Fourier spectra of the responses. The proposed procedure allows analysis of not only the underdamped but also the overdamped modes. According to the analysis, the radiation damping pertinent to the vertical vibration is half of that pertinent to the horizontal vibration and the interaction effect on the modes is not negligibly small when the impedance ratio exceeds 0·3.  相似文献

210Pb in the surface water of the North Pacific was extensively determined. The results showed that the highest concentrations of210Pb of 19 ± 3dpm/100kg were found in the northern mid-latitudes around 30°N, but longitudinal variation across the North Pacific was not observed. The mean residence time of210Pb in the surface water up to 100 m in depth is calculated to be 230 days. In the mid-latitudes of the northern hemisphere,210Pb may be transported by the prevailing westerly wind of a higher speed than 15 m/sec, likely the jet stream.  相似文献

Two methods have been developed to measure indium (In) in natural waters by flow injection inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). One is the isotope dilution technique using an113In enriched spike and the other utilizes natural yttrium present in the sample as an internal standard. In the former, optimization of the113In spike to minimize error is often difficult for samples in which In concentrations are variable, whereas in the latter method, a separate determination of Y in the sample is necessary and hence more sample is required. Using about 1 liter of a water sample, 200 fold preconcentration of In was performed by solvent extraction and back extraction technique and then introduced into the ICPMS to measure the113In/115In or115In/89Y ratios. The detection limits were 0.01–0.02 pmol kg−1 for both methods. Application of the methods to seawater samples yielded the concentrations of 0.06–0.15 pmol kg−1 for the Pacific and 0.6–1.5 pmol kg−1 for the Atlantic. The large inter-oceanic variation of In best resembles that of Al amongst the 3B group of elements in the periodic table. River and estuarine samples gave a more variable range of concentrations of 0.01–15 pmol kg−1. Most of the In supplied by rivers is removed by scavenging in the estuarine mixing zone, suggesting that the fluvial input of In to the ocean is small.  相似文献

We present Culgoora spectrograph and radioheliograph observations as well as a model of type IIIb bursts; the latter are defined as chains of striae of slow or no frequency drift, the chain as a whole drifting like a normal type III burst.The 80 MHz source positions are studied for a group of IIIb bursts, a IIIb precursor and harmonic pairs of 1:2 frequency ratio. It is found that the IIIb position may vary in a IIIb group. No significant difference was found between the source positions of a IIIb precursor and the following III burst. For one event we found that the fundamental IIIb burst showed a high degree of circular polarization (46%), while its second harmonic, a normal type III burst, was unpolarized.We suggest that the main cause for the striae in type IIIb bursts is the existence of filamentary, density irregularities along the path of the electron stream. The denser filaments initially reduce the value of the density gradient along the electrons' path and thereby enhance their emissions over a small range of plasma frequencies. If the radio emission from the filaments dominates the emission from the ambient rarified plasma, striae appear in the spectrum and a type IIIb burst results. Observations of deep ocean temperature and salinity in the Labrador and Greenland Seas indicate that there is negative correlation between the activities of deep convection in these two sites. A previous study suggests that this negative correlation is controlled by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). In this study, we discuss this deep convection seesaw by using a coupled atmosphere and ocean general circulation model. In this simulation, the deep convection is realistically simulated in both the Labrador and Greenland Seas and their negative correlation is also recognized. Regression of sea level pressure to wintertime mixed layer depth in the Labrador Sea reveals strong correlation between the convection and the NAO as previous studies suggest, but a significant portion of their variability is not correlated. On the other hand, the convection in the Greenland Sea is not directly related to the NAO, and its variability is in phase with changes in the freshwater budget in the GIN Seas. The deep convection seesaw found in the model is controlled by freshwater transport through the Denmark Strait. When this transport is larger, more freshwater flows to the Labrador Sea and less to the Greenland Sea. This leads to lower upper-ocean surface salinity in the Labrador Sea and higher salinity in the Greenland Sea, which produces negative correlation between these two deep convective activities. The deep convection seesaw observed in the recent decades could be interpreted as induced by the changes in the freshwater transport through the Denmark Strait, whose role has not been discussed so far.  相似文献

This is the first detailed study on the distribution of lead-210 in the Japan Sea water. The content of lead-210 ranged from 9.3±2.1 dph/l in the surface water to 3.4+-0.8 dph/l in the deep water—a quite low content as compared to that in the deep water of the North Pacific. Vertical profiles show that the content of lead-210 abruptly decreases below the seasonal thermocline (10–20 m in depth) and nearly uniform in the deep water. It is suggested that a significant amount of air-borne lead-210 deposited over the Japan Sea is transported along with the Tsushima Current to the open ocean. The budget of lead-210 is calculated by using a simple box-model and the mean residence time of lead-210 in the Japan Sea is estimated to be 15 yr.  相似文献
