A mud volcano LUSI initiated its eruption on 29 May 2006, adjacent to a hydrocarbon exploration well in East Java. Ground subsidence in the vicinity of the LUSI eruptive vent was well recorded by a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) PALSAR onboard the Japanese ALOS satellite. We apply an Interferometric SAR (InSAR) technique on ten PALSAR data scenes, acquired between 19 May 2006 and 21 May 2007, in order to obtain continuous maps of ground displacements around LUSI. Although the displacements in the area closest to the eruptive vent (spatial extension of about 1.5 km) are not detectable because of the erupted mud, all the processed interferograms indicate subsidence in an ellipsoidal area of approximately 4 km (north–south) × 3 km (east–west), centered at the main eruptive vent. In particular, interferograms spanning the first four months until 4 Oct. 2006 and the subsequent 46 days between 4 Oct. 2006 and 19 Nov. 2006 show at least about 70 cm and 80 cm of displacements away from the satellite, respectively. Possible causes of the subsidence, i.e., 1) loading effect of the erupted mud, 2) creation of a cylindrical mud conduit, and 3) pressure decrease and depletion of materials at depth, are investigated. The effects of the first two causes are found to be insufficient to explain the total amount of subsidence observed in the first six months. The third possibility is quantitatively examined using a boundary element approach by modeling the source of deformation as a deflating oblate spheroid. The spheroid is estimated to lie at depths of a few hundred to a thousand meters. The estimated depths are significantly shallower than determined from analyses of erupted mud samples; the difference is explained by presence of significant amount of inelastic deformation including compaction and downward transfer of material.  相似文献

The paper deals with gray box identification of flexible structures and active vibration suppression from a robust control perspective. First, the linearized mathematical model of an N‐storey flexible structure is presented. Next, the generalized mathematical model is particularized for the investigated three‐storey flexible structure. The considered flexible structure is identified based on black box and gray box identification methods and the model's parametric uncertainties are deduced. Furthermore, control constraints are presented for the design problem, in case of velocity as well as acceleration feedback, from a robust control perspective. Finally, the effectiveness of the control system is tested through experiments, when the input disturbance is assumed to be a sinusoidal one as well as a historical earthquake record (1940 El Centro record). Abstract Self-potential variations were measured to estimate the magnitude of electrokinetic and hydrological parameters (zeta potential and permeability) of the Nojima Fault zone in Awaji, Japan. The study observed self-potential variations that seemed to be associated with water flow from the injection well to the fracture zone, which were induced by turning the injection on and off. Amplitudes of the variations were a few to 0.03 V across 320–450 m dipoles. These variations can be explained well with an electrokinetic model. The quantity k/ζ (permeability/zeta potential) is in the range 1.6 × 10−13− 5.4 × 10−13 m2/V. Permeability of the Nojima fault zone can be estimated as approximately 10−16–10−15 m2 on the assumption that the zeta potential is in the range –0.01 to –0.001 V.  相似文献

Abstract A resistivity survey method using artificial telluric noise was examined and applied to a field of a fault zone. The electric earth current was measured at 50 sites in the Nojima Fault zone, which is in the northwestern part of Awaji Island, southwestern Japan. The dominant component of the observed electric field is supposed to be leakage currents from DC electric railways running outside the island. Amplitude and polarization of the stray current were systematically investigated and were revealed to represent the subsurface electrical structure of the study area. Some features on the fault zone's electrical structure have been pointed out, including: (i) an electrical boundary that corresponds to a geological one between granite (resistive) and sediments (conductive); and (ii) a low resistivity spot on the surface rupture of the earthquake fault. The structure estimated in the present study is both qualitatively and quantitatively consistent with previous resistivity surveys done using other methods pursued in the same area. It shows the validity of the 'stray current method' as one that is easy and uses low-cost resistivity exploration tools in a region where the effect of artificial noise caused mainly by leakage currents from electrical railways cannot be ignored.  相似文献

Abstract Phase transformations in model mantle compositions and those in subducting slabs have been reviewed to a depth of 800 km on the basis of recent high-pressure experimental data. Seismic velocity and density profiles in these compositions have also been calculated using these and other mineral physics data. The nature of the seismic velocity and density profiles calculated for a pyrolite composition was found to generally agree with those determined by seismic observations (e.g. PREM). The locations of the seismic discontinuities at 400 and 670 km correspond almost exactly to the depths where the transformations of the olivine component to denser phases take place. Moreover, the steep gradients in the seismic velocity/density profiles observed between these depths are qualitatively consistent with those expected from the successive transformations in the complementary pyroxene-garnet component in the pyrolite composition. Further, the calculated seismic velocity and density values agree well with those observed in the upper mantle and mantle transition region within the uncertainties attached to these calculations and observations. Pyrolite or peridotite compositions are thus most likely to represent the composition of the mantle above 670 km depth, although some degrees of chemical heterogeneity may exist in the transition region. The observed sharp discontinuous increases of seismic velocities and density at this depth may be attributed either to the phase transformation to a perovskite-bearing assemblage in pyrolite or to chemical composition changes. Density profiles in subducted slabs have been calculated along adequate geotherms assuming that the slabs are composed of the former oceanic crust underlain by a thicker harzburgitic layer. It is shown that the former oceanic crust is substantially less dense than the surrounding pyrolite mantle at depths below 670 km, while it is denser than pyrolite in the upper mantle and the transition region. The subducted former oceanic crust may be trapped in this region, forming a geochemically enriched layer at the upper mantle-lower mantle boundary. Thick and cool slabs may penetrate into the lower mantle, but the chemically derived buoyancy may result in strong deformation and formation of megalith structures around the 670 km seismic discontinuity. These structures are consistent with those detected by recent seismic tomography studies for subduction zones.  相似文献

Recognition of the importance of chlorine complexing in enhancing the solubility of metal sulfides in aqueous solutions has led to the view that the chlorine content of intrusive rock could govern the ability of a magma to separate a metal-rich hydrothermal phase. This article presents the chlorine and fluorine contents of apatites in the granitic rocks of the Barren, Tungsten, and Molybdenum provinces of Southwest Japan. The abundance of Cl in apatites correlates negatively with rock D.I. (differentiation indices), and the abundance of F in apatites correlates positively with rock D.I. The abundance of Cl in apatites of the Molybdenum province is generally higher than that of the Tungsten and Barren provinces, and the abundance of F in apatites in the Molybdenum province is generally lower than that of F in apatites of the Tungsten and Barren provinces.Apatites in the granitic rocks associated with tungsten and fluorite mineralization and granite pegmatite formation, and from the Barren province are mostly F-OH apatites  相似文献

It has been inferred from the focal mechanism of earthquakes and their hypocenter distribution (Shiono, 1977) that the stress field in southwestern Japan indicates complicated features; a NW-SE compression at shallow depths along the Nankai trough, an E-W or ESE-WNW compression in the inland crust, an extension parallel to the leading edge of the Philippine Sea plate at subcrustal depths in the region from the southern Chubu to northwestern Shikoku, and a down-dip tension beneath the Kyushu island. In order to investigate possible sources of these complex features of the stress state, a three-dimensional finite element method is employed to model the configuration of the subducting Philippine Sea plate, taking into consideration the following three possible types of forces:
1. (1) A negative buoyancy due to the density contrast between the subducting plate and the surrounding mantle.
2. (2) A northwestward compressive force generated by the movement of the Philippine Sea plate.
3. (3) A westward compressive force due to the movement of the Pacific plate.
For various combinations of different magnitudes of these forces, and of different elastic moduli, the stresses at a number of selected sites are calculated, and their directions are compared with those inferred from the focal mechanism and other geophysical information. It is found that the observed extensional stresses parallel to the leading edge of the subducting Philippine Sea plate may be caused mainly by the negative buoyancy. The northwestward compressive force may not play an important role in generating the complex stress field in southwestern Japan. The observed E-W compressional stress field prevailing in the inland region appears to result mainly from the westward-moving Pacific plate. The present results suggest that if a thin low-velocity transitional layer exists just above the subducting Philippine Sea plate, it could give appreciable effects on the mechanism of low-angled thrust faulting off the Kii peninsula and the Shikoku island. The magnitude of the shear stress in the continental crust and in the subducting plate is estimated to be of the order of several hundred bars, although the calculated shear stresses are considerably affected by the configuration of the subducting plate and also by the applied forces. It is interesting that the stress distribution appears to have some relations to seismicity of subcrustal earthquakes, and to the rupture process of large thrust earthquakes along the plate boundary.  相似文献

Experiments on MgSiO3 enstatite were conducted in the pressure range from 13 to 18 GPa under hydrous conditions in order to clarify the effect of water on the melting phase relations of enstatite at pressures corresponding to the Earth’s mantle transition zone. In some previous experiments [Geol. Soc. Am. Bull. 79 (1968) 1685; Phys. Earth Planet. Inter. 85 (1994) 237], incongruent melting behavior to form Mg2SiO4 forsterite and SiO2 enriched liquid up to 5 GPa was observed, and congruent melting behavior at pressures up to 12 GPa was observed. Under hydrous conditions, we found that the melting reaction changes from congruent to incongruent at around 13.5 GPa. Liquid formed above 13.5 GPa is enriched in MgO component relative to MgSiO3 because it coexists with stishovite (SiO2). Moreover, the solidus temperature decreases drastically at around 13.5 GPa, in unison with the change in the melting reaction. The solidus temperature is about 1400 °C at 13 GPa, but approximately 900 °C at 15 GPa. Our results show that the liquidus phase changes from clinoenstatite to stishovite with increasing pressure and water content above 13.5 GPa. MgSiO3 enstatite is one of the major constituent minerals in the Earth’s mantle, and it is expected that MgO-enriched liquid will be generated in the transition zone if water is present.  相似文献

This study investigates the convective boundary layer (CBL) that develops over anon-homogeneous surface under different thermal and dynamic conditions. Analysesare based on data obtained from a Russian research aircraft equipped with turbulentsensors during the GAME-Siberia experiment over Yakutsk in Siberia, from April to June 2000.Mesoscale thermal internal boundary layers (MTIBLs) that radically modified CBLdevelopment were observed under unstable atmospheric conditions. It was found thatMTIBLs strongly influenced the vertical and horizontal structures of virtual potentialtemperature, specific humidity and, most notably, the vertical sensible and latent heatfluxes. MTIBLs in the vicinity of the Lena River lowlands were confirmed by clouddistributions in satellite pictures.MTIBLs spread through the entire CBL and radically modify its structure if the CBL isunstable, and strong thermal features on the underlying surface have horizontal scalesexceeding 10 km. MTIBL detection is facilitated through the use of special parameterslinking shear stress and convective motion. The turbulent structure of the CBL with and without MTIBLs was scaled usingthe mosaic or flux aggregate approach. A non-dimensional parameterLRau/Lhetero (where LRau is Raupach's length and Lhetero is the horizontal scale of the surface heterogeneity)estimates the application limit of similarity and local similarity scaling models forthe mosaic parts over the surface. Normalized vertical profiles of wind speed, airtemperature, turbulent sensible and latent heat fluxes for the mosaic parts withLRauLhetero < 1 could be estimated by typical scalingcurves for the homogeneous CBL. Traditional similarity scaling models for the CBLcould not be applied for the mosaic parts with LRau/Lhetero > 1.For some horizontally non-homogeneous CBLs, horizontal sensible heat fluxes werecomparable with the vertical fluxes. The largest horizontal sensible heat fluxes occurred at the top of the surface layer and below the top of the CBL.Formerly affiliated to the Frontier Observational Research System for Global ChangeFormerly affiliated to the Frontier Observational Research System for Global Change  相似文献

In situ X-ray diffraction measurements of KAlSi3O8-hollandite (K-hollandite) were performed at pressures of 15–27 GPa and temperatures of 300–1,800 K using a Kawai-type apparatus. Unit-cell volumes obtained at various pressure and temperature conditions in a series of measurements were fitted to the high-temperature Birch-Murnaghan equation of state and a complete set of thermoelastic parameters was obtained with an assumed K300,0=4. The determined parameters are V 300,0=237.6(2) Å3, K 300,0=183(3) GPa, (?K T,0/?T) P =?0.033(2) GPa K?1, a 0=3.32(5)×10?5 K?1, and b 0=1.09(1)×10?8 K?2, where a 0 and b 0 are coefficients describing the zero-pressure thermal expansion: α T,0 = a 0 + b 0 T. We observed broadening and splitting of diffraction peaks of K-hollandite at pressures of 20–23 GPa and temperatures of 300–1,000 K. We attribute this to the phase transitions from hollandite to hollandite II that is an unquenchable high-pressure phase recently found. We determined the phase boundary to be P (GPa)=16.6 + 0.007 T (K). Using the equation of state parameters of K-hollandite determined in the present study, we calculated a density profile of a hypothetical continental crust (HCC), which consists only of K-hollandite, majorite garnet, and stishovite with 1:1:1 ratio in volume. Density of HCC is higher than the surrounding mantle by about 0.2 g cm?3 in the mantle transition zone while this relation is reversed below 660-km depth and HCC becomes less dense than the surrounding mantle by about 0.15 g cm?3 in the uppermost lower mantle. Thus the 660-km seismic discontinuity can be a barrier to prevent the transportation of subducted continental crust materials to the lower mantle and the subducted continental crust may reside at the bottom of the mantle transition zone.  相似文献
