This geochemical study of the Mexican subduction zone elucidates how metamorphic and dehydration reactions affecting the subducted oceanic plate at different depths can influence magmatic diversity. In the western Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, there is a narrow potassic volcanic front running in parallel to the Middle American Trench that becomes replaced by intraplate-like high-Nb rocks to the north, and by more typical calc-alkaline products to the southeast. Potassic rocks have high MgO and are enriched in incompatible trace elements, but have lower heavy rare earth element contents than more evolved calc-alkaline and high-Nb magmas, and slightly more enriched Sr, Nd and Pb isotopes. Potassic magmas also have higher Rb/Cs and Ba/Cs ratios than the calc-alkaline and high-Nb suites, and extend to unusually high Nb/Ta ratios that correlate positively with Rb/Ta, Zr/Ta, La/Ta and Gd/Yb. These chemical variations are inconsistent with different extents of melting of a peridotitic source, but are also incompatible with melting of a phlogopite-rich mantle (vein-plus-wall-rock relationship), unless mica is totally consumed during melting, and a titaniferous phase such as rutile remains in the residue together with garnet. This assemblage is unlikely in the source region of primitive hydrous magmas, but it is what would be expected during dissolution of phengite and monazite/allanite in the subducted slab, with the concurrent formation of an anhydrous rutile-bearing eclogite. The magmatic diversity of western Mexico can thus be explained by invoking contributions of chemically different subduction agents as a function of slab depth and residual mineralogy: a low-pressure/temperature aqueous fluid would induce melting of the peridotitic mantle wedge and form typical calc-alkaline volcanoes, whereas a deeper and hotter slab-derived melt (or supercritical liquid) would contribute to the formation of potassic magmas due to phengite/monazite/allanite disintegration. In this context, intraplate-like magmas derive from decompression melting of the upper mantle as a natural consequence of subduction geodynamics.  相似文献

The reaction kinetics of metamorphic minerals can be subdivided into interface‐ and diffusion‐controlled kinetics. The discrimination of reaction kinetics is crucial for estimating reaction rates. Here, we propose a new and simple method for discriminating reaction kinetics. This method requires measuring only the initial and final grain sizes during growth. The reaction kinetics is inferred from different plotted arrays of initial vs. final grain sizes after the mineral growth. Using metamorphic zircon, we take detrital core sizes as the initial sizes and post‐metamorphic grain sizes as the final sizes. The application of the method to the subduction‐related high‐pressure Nagasaki metamorphic complex in Japan shows that this metamorphic zircon grew under interface‐controlled kinetics even at the relatively low temperature of 440°C. This method is potentially applicable to other minerals that have time‐markers, such as chemical zoning or internal structures that are captured at a given point in time during growth.  相似文献

Regional projection of future extreme wave heights around Korean Peninsula   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this study, future changes in regional extreme wave heights around the Korean Peninsula are projected by using the results of an atmosphere general circulation model and a third-generation wave model. The direct use of the model output at each grid point is not appropriate even though high resolution of 20 km is used for the models. Therefore, the model output is grouped into six regions around the Korean Peninsula. The grouping approach is reasonable in assessing climate change effects with alleviated model uncertainty. The extreme wave heights are simulated for two climate periods of 1979–2003 (present climate) and 2075–2099 (future climate). The model results are validated by comparing the simulated wave heights for the present climate with observed and hindcasted wave data. The extreme wave heights for the future climate are then projected for different seasons and in different regions. The 50-year return wave height in summer is projected to increase in most regions, especially in the high-latitude Yellow Sea and the East Sea, while the wave height in winter is projected to decrease in all the regions, especially in the East Sea.  相似文献

In this study, the sensitivities of surface air temperatures to anthropogenic heat (AH) were investigated in downtowns of the two Japanese major cities, Tokyo and Osaka. First, meteorological measurements were made with the simultaneous monitoring of electricity demand in a contrastive couple of a downtown commercial area (C-area) and a residential area (R-area) within each city in summer 2007. From the measurements, the areal-mean surface air temperatures were obtained as \( {\overline{T}}_{\mathrm{C}} \) and \( {\overline{T}}_{\mathrm{R}} \) for each of the C-area and R-area, respectively. Using the actual electricity demand and the estimated motor fuels consumption, their areal total was evaluated as the energy-consumption-basis AH. The estimated C-areas' AH indicated greater values up to 220 W/m2 on weekdays and remarkable decrease about by half on weekends, whereas that in the R-areas showed less values of 10–20 W/m2 stably. Then, \( {\overline{T}}_{\mathrm{C}}-{\overline{T}}_{\mathrm{R}} \) on calm and fine days were found to be systematically decreased from weekdays to weekends in both cities roughly indicating a proportional relationship with the reductions in the C-areas' AH on weekends. The result suggested a common afternoon sensitivity for both C-areas of around 1.0°C/100 W/m2, which indicated an intensity of the AH impact on surface air temperature there. Next, to simulate the observed AH impact, the authors' CM-BEM (a multilayer urban canopy model coupled with a building energy model) was newly implemented in the mesoscale Weather Research and Forecasting (WMF) model. This new system, WRF-CM-BEM, was applied to Tokyo and almost reasonably validated from the aspects of the reproducibility of urban surface air temperature and electricity demand in the observation areas. The simulations also suggested that WRF-CM-BEM underestimated the observed air temperature sensitivity to AH in the Tokyo C-area roughly by half but still in the same order of magnitude.  相似文献

Initial plant colonization is critical in determining subsequent ecosystem development. In a High-Arctic oasis showing atypical “directional primary succession”, we quantified the microhabitat characteristics associated with colonization by pioneer vascular plants of a bare moraine. The study moraine, formed during the Little Ice Age, is located within the proglacial area at the southern front of Arklio Glacier, Ellesmere Island, Canada. We established two line-transects on this moraine to quantify microhabitats for vascular species. Microsites favorable for plants were concave depressions, probably increasing the likelihood of colonization. At microsites distant from stable boulders, which probably protect seeds/seedlings from wind desiccation, plant colonization was less likely. Furthermore, favorable microhabitat properties differed depending on topographical location within the moraine, suggesting that, even within a single moraine, microhabitats favorable for plant colonization are heterogeneously-distributed. This moraine was characterized by two major pioneer species, Epilobium latifolium and Salix arctica. Their species-specific microhabitat requirements highlight the importance of biotic factors in colonization processes. Favorable sites for plants are generally distributed at random in harsh environments. However, we showed that initial plant colonization is a deterministic process rather than random, indicating the possibility of non-stochastic processes even during the early phase of ecosystem development in High-Arctic ecosystems.  相似文献

Abstract— Three augite-bearing ureilites from Antarctica, Y74130, MET78008 and ALH82106, have been studied by electron microprobe, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and analytical transmission electron microscope (TEM). The first two belong to the low-16O subgroup of Clayton and Mayeda (1988) and are closely related; ALH82106 belongs to the high-16O subgroup. MET78008 is an augite-olivine ureilite, similar to the augite-bearing part of the Y74130. Augites poikilitically include ellipsoidal pigeonites, and low-Ca pyroxene poikilitically encloses ellipsoidal olivine and augite. The temperature of last equilibration deduced from an orthopyroxene-pigeonite-augite assemblage is above 1200 °C. The ALH82106 pigeonite contains irregular augite inclusions produced by decomposition. Augites in Y74130, MET78008 and ALH82106 (decomposed one) all show similar spinodal decomposition textures on the TEM scale. Cooling rates estimated from an experimentally calibrated diagram for the wavelengths of spinodal decomposition versus cooling rates are about 20 °C/hr. The calcic trend for the low-16O subgroup including Y74130 and MET78008 shows large Ca variations in pyroxene with similar Mg/Fe ratio; differentiation involving reduction was not an important process. Augite in ALH82106 is a minor phase and contains lower Na2O contents than Y74130 and MET78008, confirming that ALH82106 is not directly related to them.  相似文献

Predictors of seismic structural demands (such as inter‐storey drift angles) that are less time‐consuming than nonlinear dynamic analysis have proven useful for structural performance assessment and for design. Luco and Cornell previously proposed a simple predictor that extends the idea of modal superposition (of the first two modes) with the square‐root‐of‐sum‐of‐squares (SRSS) rule by taking a first‐mode inelastic spectral displacement into account. This predictor achieved a significant improvement over simply using the response of an elastic oscillator; however, it cannot capture well large displacements caused by local yielding. A possible improvement of Luco's predictor is discussed in this paper, where it is proposed to consider three enhancements: (i) a post‐elastic first‐mode shape approximated by the deflected shape from a nonlinear static pushover analysis (NSPA) at the step corresponding to the maximum drift of an equivalent inelastic single‐degree‐of‐freedom (SDOF) system, (ii) a trilinear backbone curve for the SDOF system, and (iii) the elastic third‐mode response for long‐period buildings. Abstract   Reaction zones of 0.5–10.0 m thick are commonly observed between serpentinite and pelitic schist in the Nishisonogi metamorphic rocks, Kyushu, Japan. Each reaction zone consists of almost monomineralic or bimineralic layers of talc + carbonates, actinolite (or carbonates + quartz), chlorite, muscovite and albite from serpentinite to pelitic schist. Magnesite + quartz veins extend into the serpentinite from the talc + carbonates layer, while dolomite veins extend into the pelitic schist from the muscovite layer. These veins are filled by subhedral minerals with oriented growth features. Primary fluid inclusions yield the same homogenization temperatures (145–150°C) both in the reaction zone and in the veins, suggesting their simultaneous formation. Mass-balance calculations using the isocon method indicate that SiO2, MgO, H2O and K2O are depleted in the reaction zone relative to the protoliths. These components were probably extracted from the reaction zone as fluids during the formation of the reaction zone.  相似文献
