Within a framework of the two-fluids approximation, basic modes constituting hydromagnetic coupling oscillations in non-uniform, finite-β plasmas are examined. It is shown that the oscillations consist of a coupling between a localized mode and a propagating one, and a strong peak appears at a resonance point. In the case of isothermal plasma (Te = Ti), there are two localized modes, the Alfvén (or drift Alfvén) and the ion drift modes, and a propagating mode being known as the fast magnetosonic wave. Coupling oscillations associated with the Alfvén mode exhibit a nearly incompressible character, whereas those with the ion drift mode are compressional and diamagnetic. Furthermore, the slow magnetosonic wave also couples with the localized mode in the case of Te > Ti. Based on characteristics of these oscillations, the origin of geomagnetic pulsations is discussed in connection with the distribution of plasma parameters in the outer magnetosphere.  相似文献

In the solar wind, electrostatic ion cyclotron waves can be excited by electrons when the flow velocity becomes supersonic. The waves reduce the proton temperature anisotropy and heat the protons effectively. Temperature equations for T e ,T p and T p are solved numerically in the region from 1 AU to the Sun, with the non-thermal proton heating rate included as a parameter. Distributions of T e ,T p , T p and the proton heating rate are determined and found to be in good agreement with the proton heating rate expected from the linear growth rate of electrostatic ion cyclotron waves. The electron thermal conductivity is reduced approximately 2–3 times smaller than the usual collisional one due to the plasma wave instabilities. Effective energy exchange rates from proton-proton and electron-proton interactions are 1–10 and 10–100 times larger than the Coulomb collision rates v ppand v ep,respectively.  相似文献

Energetic particle response in electromagnetic fields of ULF HM-waves in the magnetosphere is reviewed. Pc4–5 geomagnetic pulsations observed at the synchronous altitude are classified into three types, in respect to their major magnetic field polarization in different directions, local time dependence, and different characteristics of accompanied flux modulations of energetic particles, i.e., two nearly transverse waves with the azimuthal and the radial polarization, and the compressional stormtime pulsations. Firstly, we formulate the drift kinetic theory of particle flux modulations under the constraint of the magnetic moment conservation. A generalized energy integral of the particle motion interacting with a ULF-wave with the three-dimensional structure propagating to the azimuthal direction is obtained in the L-shell coordinate of a mirror magnetic field. Its linearized form is reduced to the same form as the previously derived energy change, including the bounce-drift resonant interaction. It is shown that the perturbed guiding center distribution function of energetic particles consists of four contributions, the adiabatic mirror effect corresponding to pitch-angle change, the kinetic effects due to energy change and the accompanying L-shell displacement, and the bounceaveraged drift phase bunching. Secondly, the basic HM-wave modes constitutingcoupling ULF oscillations in non-uniform plasmas are discussed in different models of approach for different plasma states. The diamagnetic drift Alfvén wave and the compressional drift wave with a larger azimuthal mode number in a high-beta plasma are candidates for the stormtimes pulsations. The former is intrinsically a guided localized mode, while the latter is a non-localized mode. By making use of the above preparation, we apply the developed drift kinetic theory to interpret the phase relationships between the ion flux modulation and the geomagnetic pulsation in some selected examples of observations, demonstrating a fair agreement in theoretical results with the observations.  相似文献

Respiration (=oxygen consumption) rates of 28 zooplankton species belonging to 10 taxa from 500 to 5,000?m depth of the western subarctic Pacific Ocean were determined as 0.027–0.44?μLO2 mg dry mass?1 h?1 at in situ temperatures (1.5–3?°C), which are 80?% lower than the rates of the epipelagic Antarctic zooplankton with similar body mass and at a comparable temperature. In terms of adjusted metabolic rate to 1?mg body N (AMR; μLO2?mg?N?0.8?h?1) at 1?°C, the present results (mean 1.66) fall well within the range (0.84–3.32) reported for copepods, chaetognaths, and mixed crustaceans from 500 to 7,000?m in the subarctic Pacific Ocean and Antarctic waters. Judging from their body C:N elemental ratios and ash-free dry mass (=organic matter) data, the major component of organic matter is deduced to be protein (C:N?=?3.4–8.1, by mass) for 19 out of 28 species and lipids (C:N?=?8.6–13.0) for the remaining 9 species.  相似文献

Huge carbonate rock bodies ranging in age from the Visean (Middle Mississippian/Early Carboniferous) to the Changhsingian (Lopingian/Late Permian) overlie a basaltic basement in the Changning–Menglian Belt, West Yunnan, Southwest China. These carbonates lack intercalations of terrigenous siliciclastic material throughout. These lines of evidence indicate that they formed upon an isolated and continuously subsiding mid-oceanic island (or plateau), probably of hotspot origin. The carbonates are grouped into a shallow-water carbonate platform facies regime observed in the Yutangzhai section and a relatively deep-water carbonate slope facies regime typically represented in the Longdong section. These two facies regimes developed contemporaneously as parts of a carbonate depositional system on and around a mid-oceanic volcanic edifice. The carbonate platform is subdivided into four facies, including platform-margin, shoal, lagoon, and peritidal facies. Along the measured Yutangzhai section of the platform facies regime, the vertical facies succession from the platform-margin facies into inner-platform facies such as the shoal and lagoon facies is recognized. This facies succession is explained as resulting from the progradation of the carbonate platform. Worm tubes occur as a main reef builder in platform-margin facies of the Mississippian. Their occurrence as major constituents in a high-wave-energy reef is peculiar to Carboniferous reef distributions of the world. The occurrences of other reef- and/or mound-building organisms and peritidal dolo-mudstone are almost consistent in timing with those of Panthalassan counterparts such as the Akiyoshi and Omi limestones of Japan, and probably exhibit the worldwide trend.  相似文献

Using data from a survey carried out in six tobacco growing villages across Malawi in 2004–5, this paper summarizes some main differences found in subsistence production and income levels between male‐ and female‐headed households and the disparities among female‐headed households in the light of economic liberalization policies of the past two decades. The disadvantaged position of female‐headed households in terms of land and labour endowment, together with the high cost of inputs since the structural adjustment programmes and removal of subsidies since the 1980s has prevented poorer female‐headed households not only from attaining maize self‐sufficiency, but also from engaging in high‐return agriculture such as tobacco production. Although livelihood diversification is adopted by both male‐ and female‐headed households, many female‐headed households still depend on low‐entry‐barrier activities such as agricultural waged labour and are unable to break out of the poverty cycle. However, female‐headed households are a heterogeneous category and factors such as the availability of nonfarm income opportunities, social networks to access labour and capital, land acquisition through flexible applications of patrilineal inheritance rules, and the existence of formal channels for credit and informal tobacco trading have enabled some to improve agricultural productivity and achieve high incomes.  相似文献

Microstructures recently reported from an Archaean sedimentary succession (ca. 3.0 Ga) in the Mount Goldsworthy–Mount Grant area in the northeastern Pilbara Craton meet the criteria for compelling evidence of biogenicity [Sugitani, K., Grey, K., Allwood, A., Nagaoka, T., Mimura, K., Minami, M., Marshall, C.P., Van Kranendonk, M.J., Walter, M.R., 2007. Diverse microstructures from Archaean chert from the Mount Goldsworthy–Mount Grant area, Pilbara Craton, Western Australia: microfossils, dubiofossil, or pseudofossils. Precambrian Res. 158, 228–262]. The structures are morphologically diverse. Although they were tentatively classified into five major morphological types (thread-like, film-like, small (<15 μm) and large (>15 μm) spheroidal, and spindle-like), the possible taxonomic significance of these groups was not discussed. Building on our earlier analysis, we focus on the morphology of the larger spheroids, as well as presenting further evidence relating spindles and several bizarre forms, and attempt to group them taxonomically and adduce additional evidence for their biogenicity.Taphonomic features were identified in each of the various morphological groups, but the range of morphological diversity of the spheroids cannot be attributed solely to taphonomic alteration. Four subdivisions of spheroids are proposed: (1) simple single-walled spheroids, (2) thin-walled spheroids having a diffuse envelope, (3) thick-walled spheroids, and (4) spheroids having an extensively folded wall. Simple single-walled spheroids, 15–60 μm in diameter, with various wall textures but commonly lacking envelopes or appendages form the dominant subgroup. Other complex morphologies are present and include aligned or associated bodies of thin-walled spheroids with diffuse envelopes, and spindle-like structures containing inner spheroidal bodies. The degree of morphological complexity and associations between structures suggest the presence of reproductive phases. If correct, this implies that the early Earth (ca. 3.0 Ga) showed a higher level of biodiversity than is currently postulated.  相似文献

This study presents a 64-year(1951–2014) reconstruction of the surface mass balance of Glacier No. 31, located in the Suntar-Khayata Range of the eastern Siberia, where the ablation zone is characterized by the extensive dark ice surface. We use a temperature index-based glacier mass-balance model, which computes all major components of glacier mass budget and is forced by daily air temperature and precipitation from a nearby meteorological station. The glacier shows a mean annual mass balance of –0.35 m w.e.a~(–1) during the past 64 years, with an acceleration of –0.50 m w.e. a~(–1) during the recent years. A cumulative mass loss of the glacier is ~22.3 m w.e. over the study period, about 56% of which is observed during 1991–2014. In addition to the contribution of temperature rise and precipitation decrease to recent mass loss of the glacier, an experimental analysis, in which the cleanand dark ice surfaces are respectively assumed to cover the entire ablation zone, indicates that dark ice surface, caused by insoluble impurities consisting of mineral dusts, cryoconite granules, and ice algae, plays a crucial role in the changing mass balance through enhancing melt rates in the ablation zone of the glacier.  相似文献
