We analysed interannual and decadal changes in the atmospheric CO2 concentration gradient (ΔCO2) between Europe and the Atlantic Ocean over the period 1995–2007. Fourteen measurement stations are used, with Mace-Head being used to define background conditions. The variability of ΔCO2 reflects fossil fuel emissions and natural sinks activity over Europe, as well as atmospheric transport variability. The mean ΔCO2 increased by 1–2 ppm at Eastern European stations (∼30% growth), between 1990–1995 and 2000–2005. This built up of CO2 over the continent is predominantly a winter signal. If the observed increase of ΔCO2 is explained by changes in ecosystem fluxes, a loss of about 0.46 Pg C per year would be required during 2000–2005. Even if severe droughts have impacted Western Europe in 2003 and 2005, a sustained CO2 loss of that magnitude is unlikely to be true. We sought alternative explanations for the observed CO2 build-up into transport changes and into regional redistribution of fossil fuel CO2 emissions. Boundary layer heights becoming shallower can only explain 32% of the variance of the signal. Regional changes of emissions may explain up to 27% of the build-up. Ion exchange chromatography is extremely well suited for the complete or partial separation of trace and ultra-trace elements from rooks and minerals. Selective methods are described for the separation of traces of lithium, beryllium, vanadium, uranium, strontium, barium, sodium, potassium and rare earth elements, and their determination in rook samples. The methods are especially useful for accurate standardization work. Some typical elution curves and results for the concentration of these trace elements in the six South African NIM-rock standards and some international standard rocks are presented.  相似文献

Zinc and lead in the six S.A. NIMROC Standards and in DTS-1 and PCC-1 have been determined accurately by means of atomic absorption spectrometry. A selective ion exchange separation procedure, using AG5OW-X8 cation exchange resin and 0.5 M HCl - 60% acetone as eluent, has been employed to separate zinc and lead from the matrix elements. To increase the sensitivity of lead, a slotted stainless steel tube, which is positioned on top of the air-acetylene burner head, has been used during atomic absorption measurements. The accuracy and precision of the described method is demonstrated by the analysis of synthetic mixtures containing various amounts of zinc and lead as well as major rock-forming elements.  相似文献

Devonian, spessartite dykes, known as the Weekend dykes, onthe Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia contain panidiomorphic texturesand mineral (amphibole, clinopyroxene, and biotite) compositionstypical of shoshonitic lamprophyres. The major element and traceelement geochemistry of the Weekend dykes is also representativeof shoshonitic lamprophyres with high large ion lithophile elementconcentrations (LILE, e.g., Rb, K, and Ba) relative to the lightrare earth elements (LREE, e.g., La) and very low Nb and Ti.Only Ta concentrations are uncharacteristically high relativeto Nb and Ti. The dykes are variably evolved but many samplesshow primitive compositions with high mgnumber [>0.70, wheremg-number=Mg/(Mg+09total Fe) atomic] high MgO and Ni concentrations(>10 wt.% and 150 ppm, respectively), and low heavy REE concentrations.All noble metal concentrations (Au, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, and Ir)tend to be lower in evolved samples than in primitive rocks,suggesting that evolved magmas were efficiently scavenged byimmiscible sulphide globules and that shoshonitic lamprophyreplutons may hold economic promise for the platinum-group elements(PGE). Noble metal abundances in even the most primitive rocksare low compared with many basaltic rocks excepting mid-oceanridge basalt (MORB). This makes doubtful the idea that Megumagroup mesothermal gold deposits, which are spatially and temporallyassociated with the dykes, derived their gold from the lamprophyres.Models that explain PGE concentrations and Pd/Ir ratios in awide variety of mafic rocks suggest that the low noble metalabundances probably reflect metal retention in mantle sulphides,olivine, and PGE alloys at low percentages of melting. However,noble metal abundances are higher than expected if the oceanicslab was involved in the melting process or if the source regionresembled that for most MORB, which appears to have low PGE.Mantle metasomatism represents an unlikely explanation for thePGE abundances, which are equivalent to those expected in alkalinehot-spot magmas. The high PGE abundances of hot-spot magmas(compared with MORB) may be related to the incorporation ofcore materials in deep mantle plumes. Presumably the hot-spotlikemantle became part of the subcontinental lithospheric mantlebefore the subduction and transpressional event that producedthe shoshonitic magmas.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The early Pleistocene Laguna and Turlock Lake Formations and China Hat and Arroyo Seco Gravels along the east side of the San Joaquin Valley, California, were deposited in alluvial fans and marginal lakes. Upward-coarsening sequences of silt-sand-gravel record westward progradation of glacial outwash fans from the Sierra Nevada into proglacial lakes in the San Joaquin Valley. Distinctive sedimentary features delineate lacustrine, prodelta, and delta-front facies within fan-margin deposits and lower, middle, and upper-fan facies within alluvial-fan deposits. The lacustrine facies consists of a few metres of thinly and evenly bedded, rhythmically laminated claystone and clayey siltstone in varved couplets. Draped lamination, sinusoidal lamination, and load and pillar structures occur in some beds. Siltstone and claystone grade upward to slightly thicker wavy beds of siltstone and very fine-grained unconsolidated sand deposited in a prodelta setting. Convolute laminae within deformed steeply dipping foreset beds suggest slumping on the prodelta slope. The prodelta facies grades up to the delta-front facies, which consists of burrowed and bioturbated cross-bedded fine sand. Deltaic deposits are 5–6 m thick. The lower-fan facies forms the base of the fan sequence and consists of several metres of irregularly bedded, laminated, oxidized siltstone and fine sand. The middle-fan facies consists of cross-bedded, medium-grained to gravelly sand-filled channels cut into the lower-fan facies. Interbedded lens-shaped siltstone beds 2 m thick and several metres across were deposited in abandoned channels. The upper-fan facies consists of moderately to strongly weathered clayey gravel and sand containing pebble imbrication and crude stratification. Argillization during post-depositional soil formation has blurred the distinction between mud-supported debris-flow deposits and clast-supported channel deposits, but both are present in this facies. The deposits described here demonstrate the need for additional fan models in order to incorporate the variety of deposits developed in alluvial fan sequences deposited in humid climates. In previous models based on arctic fans, debris flows, abandoned channels, or widespread siltstone beds are not present in fan sequences, nor are marginal lacustrine and deltaic deposits well represented.  相似文献

Copper in S.A. primary (NIMROCS) and in six secondary reference samples has accurately been determined by means of atomic absorption spectrometry. A selective ion exchange separation procedure, using a 20 g column of AG50W-X8 cation exchange resin and 0.2 M hydrochloric acid and 0.5 M hydrobromic acid, both containing 85% acetone, is employed for the separation of copper from all other elements, except vanadium. Vanadium which can partially accompany copper, however, is separated at the start of the sorption step with 0.01 M nitric acid-0.15% hydrogen peroxide. Accuracy and precision of the described method are demonstrated by the analysis of synthetic rock solutions containing various amounts of copper. Amounts of 10 and 100 μg of copper can be determined with a coefficient of variation of 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract— We report Sr-Nd isotope parameters, rare earth element (REE), and major element data for isolated findings of tektite-like objects from western Siberia (urengoites, South-Ural glass), as well as for two indochinites. The latter were recovered in Vietnam and their overall geochemical characteristics equal those of other tektites from the indochinite subgroup of the Australasian strewn field. The three urengoites (~24 Ma) are extremely silica-rich (89 to 96 wt% SiC2), and their REE abundances vary between 45 and 76 ppm. With LaN/YbN ranging from 7.6 to 10.4 and EuN/EU* between 0.69 and 0.75, their REE distribution patterns match that of average upper crust. The urengoites have present-day ?Sr of +155 to +174 and ?Nd ranging from ?18 to ?23. Their model ages in million years are: TSruR = 1200 up to 4060 and TNdcHUR = 1570 up to 2070. Data points for the urengoites plot colinearly in the Rb-Sr evolution diagram. The age corresponding to the slope is 183 ± 30 Ma (2s?), which is indistinguishable from the intercept age of 211 Ma in the TSrUR vs. l/fRb diagram. Rubidium-strontium and Sm-Nd systematics of the urengoites indicate a heterogeneous precursor material, derived from Paleoproterozoic continental crust, which underwent Rb/Sr fractionation and partial Sr isotope homogenization in Jurassic times. Any relation between the urengoites and the Haughton impact crater, having within 2s? errors an identical age, can be excluded on the basis of isotope relationships and geochemical data. The only known South-Ural glass (~6.2 Ma) is characterized by intermediate SiO2 (65 wt%), high Al2O3 (14 wt%) and CaO (12 wt%), and low FeOTOT (0.4 wt%) contents. This unique tektite-like object contains 110 ppm REE displaying a steeply negative C1 normalized distribution with LaN/YbN of 17, and EuN/Eu1 of 0.71. The Rb abundance (10 ppm) and Rb/Sr ratio are low, and combined with a “crustal” 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.722, yielding an unrealistic TSruR age of 2.5 Ga. The Rb-Sr systematics imply a rather recent parent/daughter element decoupling. The TNdCHUR age of the South-Ural glass is ~1690 Ma. Geochemical data suggest that urengoites and the South-Ural glass belong to two discrete groups of tektites, whose source craters remain to be discovered.  相似文献

Summary The kinetics of phytoplankton frustule dissolution has generally been studied as the appearance of silicic acid in a batch reactor. Unfortunately, this approach, though often illuminating, has not so far been successful because of the difficulty of parameterising the full reaction curve. This current study shows how the initial rate approach to chemical kinetics offers a way around this bottleneck, thereby allowing much chemical kinetics information about frustule dissolution to be collected. The technique is shown to be flexible and suited to short reaction times which facilitate detailed quantitative kinetics investigation, indeed, as would be expected in a solution phase, kinetics study. The technique is exemplified by a dissolution study of uncleaned frustules of Cyclotella crypticaat 40 °C and above. The frustules were found to yield the same dissolution rate after 5 weeks dark storage, at 4 °C. Meanwhile, log dissolution rate was found to vary linearly with pH, with gradient 0.38 ± 0.01 (r 2=0.990). Linearity was upheld even at pHs as high as 14. Finally, a robust Arrhenius plot was established between 40 and 90 °C yielding an activation energy for dissolution of 84 ± 3 kJ mol −1. Follow through with the Eyring equation yielded an activation enthalpy, ΔH , and an activation entropy, ΔS , of 81 and 85 J mol −1K −1, respectively. The discussion brings salient aspects of existing knowledge about diatom frustule dissolution kinetics into the wider context of silicate mineral dissolution.  相似文献

The wide Lacepede Shelf and narrow Bonney Shelf are contiguous parts of the south-eastern passive continental margin of Australia. The shelves are open, generally deeper than 40 m, covered by waters cooler than 18°C and swept by oceanic swells that move sediments to depths of 140 m. The Lacepede Shelf is proximal to the ‘delta’of the River Murray and the Coorong Lagoon. Shelf and upper slope sediments are a variable mixture of Holocene and late Pleistocene quartzose terrigenous clastic and bryozoa-dominated carbonate particles. Bryozoa grow in abundance to depths of 250 m and are conspicuous to depths of 350 m. They can be grouped into four depth-related assemblages. Coralline algae, the only calcareous phototrophs, are important sediment producers to depths of 70 m. Active benthic carbonate sediment production occurs to depths of 350 m, but carbonate sediment accumulation is reduced on the open shelf by continuous high energy conditions. The shelf is separated into five zones. The strandline is typified by accretionary sequences of steep shoreface, beach and dune carbonate/siliciclastic sediments. Similar shoreline facies of relict bivalve/limestone cobble ridges are stranded on the open shelf. The shallow shelf, c.40–70 m deep, is a wide, extremely flat plain with only subtle local relief. It is a mosaic of grainy, quartzose, palimpsest facies which reflect the complex interaction of modern bioclastic sediment production (dominated by bryozoa and molluscs), numerous highstands of sea level over the last 80 000 years, modern mixing of sediments from relatively recent highstands and local introduction of quartz-rich sediments during lowstands. The middle shelf, c.70–140 m deep, is a gentle incline with subtle relief where Holocene carbonates veneer seaward-dipping bedrock clinoforms and local lowstand beach complexes. Carbonates are mostly modern, uniform, clean, coarse grained sands dominated by a diverse suite of robust to delicate bryozoa particles produced primarily in situ but swept into subaqueous dunes. The deep shelf edge, c. 140–250 m deep, is a site of diverse and active bryozoa growth. Resulting accumulations are characteristically muddy and distinguished by large numbers of delicate, branching bryozoa. The upper slope, between 250 and 350 m depth, contains the deepest platform-related sediments, which are very muddy and contain a low diversity suite of delicate, branching cyclostome bryozoa. This study provides fundamental environmental information critical for the interpretation of Cenozoic cool water carbonates and the region is a good model for older mixed carbonate-terrigenous clastic successions which were deposited on unrimmed shelves.  相似文献
