Details are given of gut‐content analyses for nine fish species from the Avon‐Heathcote Estuary, Christchurch, New Zealand: sand flounder, Rhombosolea plebeia (Richardson); yellow‐bellied flounder, R. leporina (Hutton); common sole, Peltorhamphus novaezeelandiae (Gunther); yellow‐eyed mullet, Aldrichetta forsteri (Cuvier & Valenciennes); kahawai, Arripis trutta (Bloch & Schneider); spotty, Pseudolabrus celidotus (Bloch and Schneider); cockabully, Tripterygion nigripenne (Cuvier & Valenciennes); common bully, Gobiomorphus basalis (Gray); and globefish, Spheroides richei (Freminville). The percent occurrences of each food type recorded over Ihe sampling period (April 1965‐April 1966) for each species are compared. Monthly food tables are given for those species of which suitably large samples were obtained (sand flounder, yellow‐bellied flounder, common sole, yellow‐eyed mullet, and globefish). The configurational heat capacity, shear modulus and shear viscosity of a series of Na2O–Fe2O3–Al2O3–SiO2 melts have been determined as a function of composition. A change in composition dependence of each of the physical properties
is observed as Na2O/(Na2O + Al2O3) is decreased, and the peralkaline melts become peraluminous and a new charge-balanced Al-structure appears in the melts.
Of special interest are the frequency dependent (1 mHz–1 Hz) measurements of the shear modulus. These forced oscillation measurements
determine the lifetimes of Si–O bonds and Na–O bonds in the melt. The lifetime of the Al–O bonds could not, however, be resolved
from the mechanical spectrum. Therefore, it appears that the lifetime of Al–O bonds in these melts is similar to that of Si–O
bonds with the Al–O relaxation peak being subsumed by the Si–O relaxation peak. The appearance of a new Al-structure in the
peraluminous melts also cannot be resolved from the mechanical spectra, although a change in elastic shear modulus is determined
as a function of composition. The structural shear-relaxation time of some of these melts is not that which is predicted by
the Maxwell equation, but up to 1.5 orders of magnitude faster. Although the configurational heat capacity, density and shear
modulus of the melts show a change in trend as a function of composition at the boundary between peralkaline and peraluminous,
the deviation in relaxation time from the Maxwell equation occurs in the peralkaline regime. The measured relaxation times
for both the very peralkaline melts and the peraluminous melts are identical with the calculated Maxwell relaxation time.
As the Maxwell equation was created to describe the timescale of flow of a mono-structure material, a deviation from the prediction
would indicate that the structure of the melt is too complex to be described by this simple flow equation. One possibility
is that Al-rich channels form and then disappear with decreasing Si/Al, and that the flow is dominated by the lifetime of
Si–O bonds in the Al-poor peralkaline melts, and by the lifetime of Al–O bonds in the relatively Si-poor peralkaline and peraluminous
melts with a complex flow mechanism occurring in the mid-compositions. This anomalous deviation from the calculated relaxation
time appears to be independent of the change in structure expected to occur at the peralkaline/peraluminous boundary due to
the lack of charge-balancing cations for the Al-tetrahedra. 相似文献

We present the results of body waveform modelling studies for 17 earthquakes of M w ≥5.7 occurring in the South Island, New Zealand region between 1918 and 1962, including the 1929 M s = 7.8 Buller earthquake, the largest earthquake to have occurred in the South Island this century. These studies confirm the concept of slip partitioning in the northern South Island between strike-slip faulting in southwestern Marlborough and reverse and strike-slip faulting in the Buller region, but indicate that the zone of reverse faulting is quite localized. In the central South Island, all historical earthquakes appear to be associated with strike-slip faulting, although recent (post-1991) reverse faulting events suggest that slip partitioning also occurs within this region. The difference between historical and recent seismicity in the central South Island may also reflect stress readjustment occurring in response to the 1717 ad rupture along the Alpine fault. Within the Fiordland region (southwestern South Island) none of the historical earthquakes appears to have occurred along the Australian/Pacific plate interface, but rather they are associated with complex deformation of the subducting plate as well as with deformation of the upper (Pacific) plate. Two earthquakes in the Puysegur Bank region south of the South Island suggest that strike-slip deformation east of the Puysegur Trench is playing a major role in the tectonics of the region. 相似文献

Results are presented from the seventy five laboratories participating in GeoPT4, round four of the international proficiency testing programme for analytical geochemistry laboratories. Laboratories were required to analyse the sample OU-2 (Belford dolerite) using routine methods of analysis. The sample was distributed during September 1998 with a deadline for the submission of results of 15th January 1999. In this report, contributed data are analysed and z-scores calculated. Z-score values provide participating laboratories with information concerning the quality of their results and indicate data that may be subject to unsuspected analytical bias. The quality of astronomical spectroscopic data now available is so high that interpretation and analysis are often limited by the uncertainties of the laboratory data base. In particular, the limit with which space–time variations in the fine structure constant α can be constrained using quasar spectra depends on the availability of more accurate laboratory rest wavelengths. We recently measured some transitions in magnesium by high-resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy for this purpose, and we now report measurements on some ultraviolet resonance lines of Zn ii (2062 and 2026 Å), Cr ii (2066, 2062 and 2056 Å) and Ni ii (1751, 1741, 1709 and 1703 Å). Apart from the last line, which is very weak, the uncertainty of these measurements is 0.002 cm−1 (0.08 må) for the lines around 2000 Å and 0.004 cm−1 (0.12 må) for the lines around 1700 Å. 相似文献

A calcitic stalagmite collected from a limestone cave in the Buchan area of eastern Victoria has been dated by three mass-spectrometric uranium series analyses. Two growth phases are represented: the older from 13.4 to 10.6 ka and the younger from 3.2 to 2.1 ka. Oxygen isotope analysis reveals that temperatures were below present-day values at all times, but particularly cool conditions are indicated between 12.3 and 11.4 ka, and Neoglacial conditions occurred at about 3 ka. The older cold climate event is clearly synchronous with the Younger Dryas in Europe and this is the first time that strong evidence for this event has been found in Australia. Carbon isotope variations are interpreted as indicating changes in plant productivity on the surface and are most likely controlled by variations in summer rainfall. They indicate particularly high levels of plant productivity from 11.5 to 11.0 ka. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献
